Basic acting, poor music, mediocre story and awful fight scenes with terrible camera work

This series only redeeming side is a mediocre story but it's plagued with problems that don't captivate audiences like me. It's not even dated series so there's no excuse for such poor camera work and the lack of choreographed fight scenes makes this feel like I am watching amateurs in the entire staff.

If in 5 episodes this doesn't captivate you and the fight scenes/camera work turn you off I'll tell you that it doesn't get better.

very entertaining!

I have to say that i enjoyed the series immensely and hope that a second season will manifest. It was light-hearted and fun to be entertained by this group of young actors. Being American, I actually prefer watching Chinese movies and streaming series like this. The sets are always magnificent and the stories similar, they tend to be heroic and good messages abound. However, it would be nice to see the romantic couple live happily in the end. More often than not the protagonist loses his love interest at the end of story. Wu and Tang San had great chemestry and it was sad to see them have to separate at the end of season 1. LoL. I recommend it. Good Formula Film. As an American, I find the Chinese movie industry very refreshing.

Shrek seven devils-simple yet amazing!!!

Tang San and his Seven devils together with their masters bring to us a very simple, light hearted yet amazing and entertaining Douluo continent.
The plot revilves around spirit masters and various mysteries arou d them in the Douluo continent.
The main focus however is on the seven students of Shrek academy and their stories.
I liked the emotional development between these seven students, also with their masters and how they stay lotal to Shrek academy, despite overcoming many hurdles and difficulties. They deal with powerfhl spirit masters, titled duoluos and even various academies with their tacit understanding and excellent team work.
I particularly liked the action scenes in this drama. The special effects were also good.
All the cast were excellent in their performances. As usual, Xiao Zhan never fails to give excellent performance and Tang San is another example.
Wu Xuanyi and the rest were also very good in their roles.
There may be some times, when the drama pace may seem slow, or sometimes you may get bored, but the plot is very good and as the story proceeds, it becomes much more interesting.
So, this is a highly recommended drama!! You will not be disappointed.

Bad script and whiny acting

This story is completely different from the actual novel, maybe catered to subset of audience. ML looked so old and omg his acting was all about being whiny, ML gets into trouble and FL lead just jumps into the pit to rescue without using an ounce of brain power, and same goes when FL is in trouble and ML jumps. Dude is a prodigy with so much talent, his mom and dad left him so many powers and he still keeps whining about not being strong and they abandoned him. Fights were subpar too.

Waiting for season two please..

If you have watched the anime version which is still ongoing, then do lower your standard for drama version. Drama version is more compact and skipped quite a lot of nitty gritty and straight to the main story. I have not watched the anime but my hubz is watching it so I kind of peeped at his screen at times. Lol..

LIKE

Everything as this is Wu Xia mixed with fantasy and I love the story about soul masters, soul beasts and soul rings. Everything soul interests me.

DISLIKE

40 episodes are too little for this amazing drama while some crappy ones get 70 episodes?!

I remembered cursing at the last episode as it ended too soon.

MUSIC

Rated standard five stars as not even one song is to my liking though there are Lala Hsu and Liu Yu Ning. *rolled eyes*

REWATCH VALUE

Quite like the story, shall re-watch again

Very shounen

Duoluo Continent reminds me of an RPG, or maybe shounen anime. Courageous young man embarks on life-changing adventures with his friends to get stronger, uncover the past, and save the world. It’s a classic shounen formula. (They don’t quite get to saving the world here, but you can tell it’s coming, in some sequel we’ll probably never see- afaik the listed sequel is not actually a sequel to this drama.)

What I like most about this show is the world-building, which is particularly RPG-esque. There is a set framework to the Soul Master system, but everyone has their own spin. It’s always fun to see what a character’s martial soul is or what new skill they’ve acquired.

They do try a little too hard to be cool sometimes- like strike a pose and show off your rings, which as far as I can tell, is the equivalent of flexing. It looks cool until you consider its nonexistent functional purpose. But that’s a minor quibble. I still think the system is well-structured, letting everyone have their own unique identity within a set framework.

The world itself is also beautiful and imaginative- lovely forests, sweeping CGI cityscapes, an exotic-feeling desert town, etc. And it is enhanced by some great music. I really like the instrumental BGMs, and the uplifting, pop-y songs (like that boyband-sounding opening). Altogether it invokes strong vibes of grand adventures, epic journeys, and lifelong memories.

What I like less… I wonder if it’s because I’m neither young nor male, so the shounen formula doesn’t quite do it for me anymore. The show just somehow feels a lot more simplistic than what I’m used to. The relationships and emotions all seem pretty straightforward.

The main character is Tang San. He seems to be your typical shounen lead: strong for his age but still needs to level up, a good guy trying to do the right thing, mysterious and special family lineage, etc.

Except, he is also really weirdly overprotective of Xiao Wu, to the point that it’s a little frustrating. It makes no sense and he behaves really stupidly sometimes. It was starting to make me like Xiao Wu less, even though she didn’t do anything wrong.

Xiao Wu, to her credit, just responds back: I can protect you too! She somehow manages to be cute without being annoying, which I consider a rare feat. I think it’s because she comes off as genuine; credit should go to the actress. However, as a character, she’s still not that deep. She has her secrets, but the show didn’t quite build up around it the right way to make me feel emotionally affected.

The rest of the band is nicely gender balanced (which I appreciate!) and they’re mostly paired off. Each person has maybe one or two characteristic personality features. Team spirit / loyalty / teamwork is a huge theme, but you know they all love each other and will stick together through anything. It’s got the same vibe as teenagers together on a sports team.

There are also some pretty great adults. The headmaster, for instance, is kind of hilarious. But in the end, the show isn’t that much about them.

The plot itself is fairly linear, one quest after another. Lots of stuff like, fighting to prove themselves, or overcoming obstacles through determination. I occasionally felt frustrated watching what I thought was stupid behavior, but framed as praiseworthy (eg returning a baby alpaca to its mom- I don’t understand the fuss, just give it back. Or, charging into another school and attacking people for no reason- how is this not recognized by all as a punishable offense?)

Aside from that, though, the plot is interesting enough. I was captivated for a while, but eventually my interest began to wane. I think I just wanted something deeper from the characters and relationships. I believe they were all children in the original (which I didn’t watch/read), so that might have made it all make more sense.

Acting-wise, I like Xiao Zhan as much as anyone, but I felt he overacted a few times (eg sobbing at his dad rather than trying to reason with him). It’s not just him, though- some other actors also felt kind of unnatural at times. It might be more about the script, or the fact that I didn’t emotionally connect to the story. Then it’s just weird to watch actors saying flat or cheesy lines so earnestly.

I think the actress playing Xiao Wu must have some dance training but not martial arts. Her movements have dance-like flourishes- suitable to her name, and pretty to watch- but some of her kicks were not real kicks, which made me want to facepalm.

The fighting overall is not bad though, very CGI-based. It’s more fun when they still are showing Martial Souls. Towards the end I think they got a little lazier and resort to things like blasts of energy.

Overall it’s not a bad show, I just think shounen is not my thing anymore. Maybe when I was a teenager I would have liked it, but now I want more depth and connection to the characters, which I found missing.

ENDING – READ AHEAD ONLY IF YOU WANT TO KNOW, CONTAINS SPOILERS

The ending feels more like a beginning. There is a whole donghua/manhua series behind this show, and I don’t know how much it’s true to them, but you can imagine that the story goes on and turns into an epic saga. This is clearly just the first chapter. The characters resolve the major conflict of the season, and all major secrets previously hinted at are revealed, but there is obviously more.

I would say it’s satisfying enough. I always find it frustrating to have to drop a story partway, but at least you know that the saga continues, which is better than an actual bad drama ending. Personally, I didn’t like the story enough to pine after it or even look up all the material behind it.

Heart-Warming story

I enjoyed this drama. First of all, I have been looking for Xiao Zhan’s drama and was very happy to find one. I like the character development and the growth of the main as well as supporting characters throughout the story. I also like the idea of the openness of Shrek Academy that teaches students thinking outside the box and giving them more experiential learning opportunities although those opportunities involve many dangers and adventures. One of my biggest take-away from Shrek Academy is “do not judge a book by its cover.” They were many relationships, friendships, love, sacrifice, and redemption evolving around the characters, which was kind of old school but it was enough to warm my heart during this pandemic period. Although the storyline could have been more solid, especially with Xiao Zhan’s father, story development of other supporting characters, and the ending, this give me something to look forward to in season 2. To me, Ou Si Ke seems like the most funny and hilarious character that spies up the show. He stood out as the most fun actor to watch (Pretty surprised to see this side of him after seeing him in arsenal academy). Also like Xiao Zhan’s character, which matches well with him and his previous role of WWX in Untamed. Because I was watching with an app, I didn’t really get a chance to listen to any music but I didn’t have any problem with much. Chinese fantasy drama always fascinates me because they have so many different topics, themes, study object, creative aspects embedded in the story. It was nice to see another beautiful fantasy, adventure, and action drama.

In short, if you like light-hearted fantasy and adventure drama, I would recommend watching it.

New thought of Chinese drama

Douluo Continent is the first Chinese Special effect TV series I watched. At the beginning, I didn't expect too much on it. When I started to watch, it is totally changed the impression of Chinese Drama.
Douluo Continent with high world class visual effect and the story is compact and I cannot stop to watch .
Meanwhile, Xiao Zhan played the essence of the role and made the series more attractive.
If you stay at home during the Chinese New Year Holiday because of the epidemic, I recommend you to watch Doulou Continent. After watching, you will feel satisfied and happy throughout the Chinese New Year.

Highly recommended for action movie lovers

I haven’t seen neither the novel or the anime. To me, the storyline is well written and very attractive and I couldn’t help looking forward to watching the next episode every day.
The visual effect of this drama is amazingly incredible and I can say it’s one of the best that I’ve seen in Chinese drama. Nevertheless, Xiao Zhan acting is the highlight of the series, he is charming and fascinating which engages the audience's attention. Besides, all other supporting actors are doing a great job and I can feel their passion and devotion in making a real good production.

Sorry for anyone who liked my original review, but I’ve changed my mind too many times and there’s a word limit.

I love how we are introduced to the characters, and how Ma HongJun has a more fleshed out story in this. The actors casted as each character really showcase the personality of their characters in the best ways. The overall story is great, fair warning for everyone though, episode 16 is a little cringey as though xiao Zhan is a great actor, the entire spider legs scene is just not it. The show is awesome so far and is making its own take on the story. If it were it’s own original show, it’d be awesome, but there are bound to be some people who read the source material who don’t like the changes. One last little thing that I’d like to know, does tang San learn poison from du gu bo or does he never learn about poisons and never encounters dugu? And one last thing completely, the actor for grandmaster (Calvin Chen) has done awesome at portraying him and I think he really captured the essence of xiao gang. (But kind of more like the dumbledore goblet of fire thing where in the books he’s composed but in the movie he’s more straightforward and assertive, ya know?) The directors really hit snake eyes on the dice roll for episode 1 because it is a great introduction, but it probably pushed away a lot of the audience who had read the manhua/book or seen the anime.

One of the best drama ,,no boring moment ,,every chapter has diferent highlights ,,the script writer done a great job to compressed all action and exciting moment in each chapter.. all cast are impressive ,,acting skills of main role xiao zhan is superb ,,the best actor and most handsone ,,the crying scene is flooding ,,oh God ! He is the most handsome in this planet eyes only to him is enough ,,the rabbit girl is annoying and not pretty ,,her face is so ordinary and disgusting ,,while the other 3 ladies are more sexy and beautiful . The rest of the cast are impressive except for the rabbit girl ..😥 overall ,, this adaptation series is the best ,, xiao zhan , the best actor and most handsome ,,the producer has a good taste to choose the best actor ...i dont like the anime with too many episodes and so boring to watch that more than 100
