Moonlit reunion that dimmed halfway
I don’t have much expectations coming into this show. But it was engaging enough for me to keep watching. My mistake, however, was starting the show way too early. When I had caught up with the latest episodes that was aired, I had to pause midway and somehow lost my desire to continue the show. I think if I watched the show when all episodes were released, I could power through all (by skipping a majority of it).
Let’s focus on the positives and perhaps I will come back to this someday.
1) Tian Si Wei is well casted as lord demon cat, Wu Zhen. There’s something magnetic and cat-like about her that makes this role a natural fit for her.
2) Wu Zhen’s character where she’s strong and heck care about others’ impression of her is admirable
3) The story of second male and female leads. The second male lead might be naive, but he is sincere, open minded and warm. His dynamic with the black snake is also adorable to watch

Novel Reader Alert! Worth Watching!!
The first few episodes might feel a little slow, but once it picks up, it’s worth it! I like how the drama takes a different direction from the novel while still keeping some of the original lines and moments. The cast is really well chosen too— everyone fits their roles perfectly. And honestly, the empress is my absolute favorite character… she totally cracks me up, LOL.

The best watch of 2025
Absolutely the best watch of this year and worth waiting for. From production and direction to unmatched performances by both the leads this slow burn historical romance with its fantasy elements, a kickass strong FL and a torn hurting ML subduing his emotions to find his father’s killer and unwillingly but surely compelled to fall for his life mate is an endearing watch that deserves multiple binge rewatches - just to see the two drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Burning and irresistible. The comments regarding the deadpan face acting from KAI are baseless. Read the book. The character is SUPPOSED to be withdrawn, expressionless and restrained. Both Kai and XiWei are well matched in talent and chemistry. The way he falls for her first while she unknowingly is bewitched is so beautiful. She has a strong storyline of an uber strong powerful demon lead while he has humble beginnings and rare unmatched talent and bravery. It’s an enduring story - the kind that fairytales are made of. And the 2 actors have loved the story to its full potential. The way Kai’s expression goes from stone face composed to full panic and fearful when she is in danger is like a page turner from great story to great romance. The best thing about the series is that the story is strong and meaningful and not just and excuse to throw a couple together for a few kiss scenes and irrational romantic moments. Despite being a tv production, the AI, CGI and all manner of special effects are expertly executed. Its a high quality timeless legend that will go on to become an all time classic. Was this review helpful to you?
You will love the FL
The FL is very good. She plays so well that it's captivating and engaging. Xu Kai is very invested in his role. The drama deserves so much and I hope there will be a lot to explore in the remaining episodes.Plus the visuals are beautiful. I don't know about you, but this drama has become one of my best that I've seen this year because of the FL. It's on my list. It has her own unique universe.
But to tell the truth also at some point the story is very slow and it's deserves better than that.

A great production, Interesting plot, Great acting
Both main leads are so good at acting & story wise this is so interesting, especially FL is so cool & her character is so strong, mature, not a childish one. I love her character, ML is so calm & no one can guess he’s a demon hunter. My only concern is both of them are in opposite sides. One is a half-demon who cares for the world peace & the other is a demon hunter who also cares for the world peace. I hope they would end up together no matter how they are differ from each other & yet they share the same goal. Costumes are so gorgeous in this drama & I love how FL’s loved ones spoiled her . A cinematic masterpiece. Was this review helpful to you?
The best dramas break your heart first, then make every happy ending feel earned.
I have to admit, after finishing The Long Ballad, I intentionally lowered my expectations before starting Moonlit Reunion. I didn't want to expect another masterpiece. I simply wanted to enjoy the journey. What I didn't expect was finding a drama that completely reminded me why I fell in love with fantasy C-dramas in the first place.
Moonlit Reunion is not perfect. Like most xianxia dramas, it has familiar tropes—hidden identities, ancient grudges, reincarnation, sacrifices, misunderstandings, and a destiny that seems determined to separate the leads. But what made it work for me was how emotionally invested I became in the characters. Instead of feeling repetitive, every revelation added another layer to the story and made me want to keep watching.
One of the biggest strengths of this drama is that it never relied solely on romance. The mystery surrounding the Cat Master, the Sinister Infant, the events from eighteen years ago, and the true identities of several characters kept me constantly curious. Every time I thought I had figured everything out, another piece of the puzzle appeared.
That balance between romance, mystery, fantasy, and suspense was exactly what kept me engaged from beginning to end.
Xu Kai once again proved why he's one of my favorite actors.
I've watched several of his dramas, and what impresses me most is his ability to portray different versions of the same character without making them feel identical.
As Mei Zhuyu, he wasn't the loud, overprotective male lead who constantly declared his love. Instead, he portrayed someone intelligent, composed, patient, and quietly devoted. He expressed love through actions rather than dramatic speeches.
The more the story unfolded, the more I appreciated his performance.
Whether he was investigating the truth, protecting Wu Zhen from the shadows, or carrying burdens he chose not to reveal, Xu Kai delivered every emotional scene with restraint. He never overacted, yet every expression carried weight.
By the time the final arc arrived, I realized that many of the drama's most heartbreaking moments worked because of how naturally he portrayed sacrifice.
Tian Xiwei completely surprised me.
I've always found her charming in romantic comedies, but Moonlit Reunion allowed her to show a much wider emotional range.
Wu Zhen could be playful, stubborn, mischievous, vulnerable, and incredibly courageous—all within the same episode.
She wasn't a perfect heroine, and that's exactly why I liked her.
She made mistakes.
She doubted herself.
She struggled with her identity as someone caught between the mortal and demon worlds.
Watching her gradually accept who she truly was made her character feel believable and relatable.
Most importantly, the chemistry between Tian Xiwei and Xu Kai never felt forced.
Their relationship grew naturally through trust, shared experiences, and countless sacrifices instead of instant romance.
The chemistry was one of the drama's greatest strengths.
Rather than relying on excessive romantic scenes, Moonlit Reunion focused on emotional intimacy.
Sometimes a simple glance, silent protection, or choosing each other despite impossible circumstances carried far more impact than grand romantic confessions.
Their relationship was built on mutual respect.
Neither character constantly needed saving by the other.
Instead, they repeatedly chose to protect one another, making their partnership feel balanced.
By the final episodes, I genuinely believed they belonged together.
Visually, this is one of the most beautiful fantasy dramas I've watched.
The cinematography deserves enormous praise.
Every location felt magical without looking overly artificial.
The moonlit forests, ancient temples, demon realm, and mountain landscapes all created an immersive fantasy world.
Several scenes genuinely looked like paintings.
The color palette shifted beautifully depending on the emotional tone of each arc.
Soft moonlight during romantic moments.
Cold blue tones during tragedy.
Warm golden lighting during reunion scenes.
Every frame felt carefully composed rather than simply filmed.
The soundtrack elevated every emotional moment.
One thing I always appreciate in a drama is when I can remember its music after finishing it.
Moonlit Reunion accomplished exactly that.
The background score never overpowered the scenes.
Instead, it quietly enhanced every confession, every sacrifice, every farewell, and every reunion.
Several emotional moments became unforgettable because the music knew exactly when to stay subtle and when to soar.
What I appreciated most was the pacing.
Unlike some fantasy dramas that become repetitive in the middle, I rarely felt the urge to skip scenes here.
Every major revelation answered one mystery while introducing another.
The story maintained enough momentum that I always wanted to know what happened next.
Even the numerous twists surrounding identities and the events from eighteen years ago eventually connected in satisfying ways.
The emotional payoff made the journey worthwhile.
I often say that my favorite xianxia dramas are the ones that emotionally destroy me first before rewarding me with a satisfying ending.
Moonlit Reunion delivered exactly that.
It gave me heartbreak.
It gave me sacrifices.
It gave me moments where I genuinely thought happiness was impossible for the characters.
But unlike tragedies that leave you emotionally exhausted, this drama remembered to reward both its characters and its audience.
By the time the final episode ended, I wasn't thinking about how much they suffered.
I was thinking about how much they deserved their happiness.
And that made all the pain worth it.
Final Thoughts
After watching many fantasy C-dramas over the past few months, I've realized that what keeps me invested isn't simply powerful cultivators or beautiful CGI.
It's the emotional journey.
The sacrifices.
The trust.
The quiet acts of love.
The feeling that every happy moment has been earned after everything the characters endured.
Moonlit Reunion reminded me why I enjoy this genre so much.
It isn't just another fantasy romance.
It's a story about destiny, identity, forgiveness, sacrifice, and choosing love despite impossible circumstances.
Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei delivered wonderful performances, supported by stunning cinematography, memorable music, and a world that felt both magical and emotionally grounded.
For me, this became another xianxia that successfully balanced fantasy with heartfelt storytelling.
It made me smile.
It made me anxious.
It made me cry.
And most importantly...
It gave me the emotional recovery I always look for after the heartbreak.

Don't listen to others, just watch it.
This is one my most favorite Cdramas out there. One of the few that made me think, "Wow, so China can do it as well if they tried". I watched this on a whim and just got hooked instantly on episode 1! It's been a while since I've watched this but I'm only giving a review now because I didnt have an account back then. Still, this cdrama left a very positive impression on me that I won't forget.Let me start with the female lead, Tian Xiwei, normally I wouldn't care to remember anyone's real name in a drama but she just perfectly executed her character and left me in a jaw drop. I then looked on the internet and found out that she's literally called the Sweetheart of china. She just nails the playful WuZhen at day and the cold cat lord Wu Zhen at night. Super impressed by her and this is the first time I've watched her in a drama.
The production of this drama and execution is so good too. I love every part of it as well as the writing and the osts. Literally I have nothing but praises for this drama, so if you're wondering if you wanna try it, just go for it. Overall, 9.5/10.

Why Is Nobody Talking About This Gem?
Moonlit Reunion actually surprised me in the best way possible. This is a top notch production with stunning acting. The Premise
The strory is set in a supernatural version of Chang'an, where the fragile balance between humans and the hidden underworld of demons is constantly under threat.
Our main female lead, Wu Zhen, is a free-spirited noblewoman — sister of the Empress, publicly known for her unruly and eccentric behavior — who secretly holds a grand power inherited from a previous Cat Lord. She is as the half-human, half-demon guardian of the Demon Underworld. Mei Zhuyu is a calm, upright young man who has just arrived to Chang'an as an official for the Bureau of Mystic Investigations, but is secretly an elite Celestial Master prodigy and skilled demon slayer investigating a tragic fire from eighteen years ago that killed his parents.
The fact that the two main leads are already natural enemies tells you a lot about how much of an emotional fallout we will have in the future. Star-crossed doesn't even begin to cover it.
Now I genuinely have no idea why no one really talks about this show, because the premise is really great. And my first impression is that this is one of the best fantasy C-dramas I've seen this year — and I need people to stop sleeping on it.
Production That Actually Ate
First and foremost, the CGI work in this drama is elite. This is probably the best I've seen from any C-drama released in the past couple of years — it's absolutely nuanced, feels natural, and half the time I genuinely could not tell what was a real set and what was digitally constructed. The Demon Underworld looks incredible and never once feels fake. There are only a couple of slightly uneven moments toward the end where the background gives itself away, but for the vast majority of the show, the visual work is seamless. The cinematography is top-notch — every important scene is beautifully executed, the lighting is stunning, and it all adds to the ambience in a way that makes you want to screenshot every other frame.
I have way too many favorite scenes from this drama starting from Mei Zhuyu’s jump in episode 10 where he saves Wu Zhen and so on and so forth.
The music is also phenomenal. It makes a massive difference in building on top of the visuals for maximum emotional impact — both the original soundtracks and the background score elevate every scene they touch. And the cast? Fantastic. I know most of these actors can totally deliver. The acting is great, including the child actors, and everything happening on screen feels absolutely believable.
That's how you do a proper fantasy drama. Take notes.
The Script Is Smarter Than You Think
The biggest reason I loved this drama is because the writing is genuinely intelligent. Now — the first few episodes are admittedly a little slow as we meet all the important characters and players who will be with us for the majority of the drama. For some people, it might even feel boring because there's a lot of talking and walking and chatting with seemingly nothing high-stakes happening. But trust me, take note of everything because those are all important scenes.
And just stick with it.
It's paced this way for a reason. The script doesn't do that annoying thing where it drops a random character in the middle of the show for five episodes just to kill them off as a plot device. It also doesn't introduce crucial characters halfway through when you've already settled into the existing cast. Everything is set up intentionally from the start, the pacing picks up little by little, and every emotional scene builds on what came before. It all culminates in a final twist that I absolutely did not see coming — and it lands because the groundwork was already there.
The Plot — Familiar Tropes Done Right
The plot is a combination of familiar, beloved tropes that somehow work beautifully here because of how they're woven into the story. The biggest one is the hidden identity for both leads. Wu Zhen is the Cat Lord of the Demon Underworld. Mei Zhuyu is a Celestial Master and demon hunter. They are naturally star-crossed lovers who have no idea about each other's true identities as they start falling for each other.
I know — this is not a new concept. It's an overused plot device. But it absolutely works in Moonlit Reunion because the writers know how to utilize it effectively. They don't let either character find out about the other’s identity too early. These two actually go through hurdles together, fall for each other, and enter a marriage without knowing who the other one truly is, and that's what keeps you watching — because the longer they're together, the deeper they fall, and the worse you know the fallout will be. When the reveal finally happens, it hits hard. All the emotional groundwork the drama has been laying pays off completely. It's a high-stakes romance that makes sense, and the payoff is chef's kiss.
The Romance — Slowburning in the Best Way
The romance is established right away, but it does take time to build. You might get frustrated watching Mei Zhuyu constantly shut down Wu Zhen's advances — but do not stop watching. First, he does it for a valid reason. And I like that writers didn’t rush his character into falling for her and just forgetting everything that he is right away.
It takes them about twenty episodes to get together, but getting there is genuinely addicting. The writers let them help each other through different situations, building trust and connection organically. And when they finally acknowledge their feelings? It's hot. Very hot. We get several really good kissing scenes, and despite a lukewarm beginning that might make you worry about lack of skinship, the chemistry is absolutely chemistrying when it matters. I think we already know that both Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei and very good at romantic roles and building that on screen connection. I know these days everyone is crazy over her role in Pursuit of Jade and her chemistry with ZLH, but she is equally amazing in Moonlit Reunion paired with Xu Kai. Also, the last drama I saw him was in 2021 when Ancient Love Poetry came out. It was much younger there so in Moonlit Reunion his look is a little bit more mature and sharper and I quite enjoyed it. He acting was super good and very subtle.
I’m sure you’ll want to know if there is a separation. Yes there is, but it’s written in a way where it all makes sense and it doesn’t last long and you absolutely do not get mad at them being separated because they have other more important things to worry and they don’t actually spend a lot of time apart if any.
Overall, this slow burn earns its payoff — no notes.
Supporting Characters That Actually Serve a Purpose
This is one of the very few dramas where I did not skip a single scene. Every supporting character is written into the drama evenly, utilized at full potential when necessary, and given a meaningful backstory that serves the overall plot. No filler characters. No wasted screen time.
Mei Si initially seems like he's just there for comic relief, but his romance with Liu Taizhen had me completely hooked. You think you know where it's going, and then there's a twist toward the end that adds real depth to both characters. In hindsight, I should have seen it coming — I was already asking myself the question if she was born a demon — but when it's finally explained, it recontextualizes everything. Their ending gives them a fresh start by shedding their old skin, so to speak, and it's genuinely satisfying. Even though writers do not show it to us on screen, we know what will happen.
I also absolutely adored Mei Si's friendship with Xuan Hui. I was gutted by how Xuan Hui died, but it made sense narratively and probably gave him the closure of finally doing something worthwhile with his existence.
There's another hint of romance between Hu Zhu and Shuang Jiang, though the writers leave it open-ended — more like they've become friends with the potential for something more. It ties into the overall theme of the drama — that there can be good demons and evil humans — and watching these two characters grow to like and accept each other is genuinely meaningful. This is the best way to utilize show don’t tell technique.
Wu Zi Shu added an extra layer of complexity to the storyline. He actually had me trying to figure out whether he'd end up being the big villain does, everything was pointing at that, but I really didn't expect him to make the choice he did — and it was completely consistent with his character.
The addition of the Changxi Palace brothers also truly beefed up the plot. Loved them all.
Overall, every character in this show acts exactly how they should according to their established personality. Nobody acts out of character for the sake of drama or plot convenience, and I think that consistency is one of the biggest reasons this show worked so well for me.
Final Thoughts
Moonlit Reunion is not a typical wuxia or xianxia — it doesn't come with all the flare and bells and whistles of a high fantasy drama. It’s a different kind a fantasy drama; presented in a way than most fantasy C-dramas don’t use, and I think that's exactly why I didn’t wanted to end. The pacing is solid, the writing is sharp, the post-production team did a stellar job, and the cast delivers.
If you enjoy Chinese fantasy, this show will surprise you. I'd recommend going in the way I did — without expectations based on what you've seen before from a costume C-drama. While this drama utilizes plenty of common plot devices, it uses them in a way where they don't feel tired but actually serve to move the plot forward. Some scenes are absolutely stunningly done.
Just watch it. Give it a few episodes to settle in before you judge it. You might enjoy it way more than you think — and honestly, this show deserves so much more attention than it's getting. The girlies need to know.
Don’t forget to watch the bonus scene after the final credits roll up. You’re welcome.

nothing important
This drama is one of the upcoming drama that i wait. At first, i didn't hype much cause i don't want to feel disappointed later. For me, the costumes, lighting, and CGI (for the Demon Market and spirit powers) are beautiful. Night scenes, especially, give off a romantic yet slightly eerie vibe, perfectly matching the title.
But then, some episodes are fast-paced, full of mystery and action. Maybe the production didn't edit well. or mislook.
The casts here looks handsome and beautiful. I really like meisi and liutanzhen, even the yeye. They look like a family together , where yeye is their future son who try to make his dad n mom to be together. And of course i didn't like wuzishu, like death wasn't suitable for him. He's sooo annoying character, i thought peijiya would be , but then he died.

Beautiful Production
This drama was a honestly a visual VFX feast; the CGI and the special effects were top notch and clearly high budget.Plot-wise and as with most dramas, I liked the first half of the story much more than the second. The second half felt more like an afterthought, and the pace was much slower during the last 7 or so episodes. While I didn't mind the side characters since the drama spent a lot of time fleshing out all of their characters, the second half really gave an inordinate amount of screentime to the side characters ... so if you're not a fan of them, just a warning.
Acting-wise, this is one of the rare times where I think absolutely everyone in the cast were great actors that really made their individual characters come alive. Tian Xi Wei in particular completely knocked it out of the park - she played a coquettish Cat Lord so well and probably entered into my list of top 3 female characters of all time for her assertive and carefree personality. Never once have I thought she needed saving and all her fight scenes convinced me that she was incredibly capable and powerful.
Overall, a nice solid production that's worth the watch just for the visuals and the stellar music.
