Drama with potential but execution is all

It started good and really interesting . I liked the leads relationship who fell in love slowly buy deeply, the plot with demons and demons slayers had potential and I was excited about the angst between the two of them considering their true identities. The outfit and cinematography were really striking.
The leads performance were good, they played the role the best way it could've been. Considering I had my bias against the male actor, this drama kinda changed my mind about him.

So considering all those elements I thought I watching a gem. But alas, it went downhill towards the middle, I thought it would get better after the leads get married but I was already disconnected from the drama.

My main issue was the fact that supporting characters took too much place in the plot, I'm not even talking about the SML he wasn't that infuriating actually. However Mei Si for example, I wondered in the middle of the story if I saw him more than the actual ML. Those little side stories weren't that boring, it just felt I was watching a drama within a drama and this disconnection from the main plot was annoying for me.

The disproportionate time screen between Wu Zhen and Mei Zhu Yu was an issue too : in the beginning it was normal to concentrate more on the FL to extend the lore and thicken the plot but at some point I wanted to see more about the ML and the lore of the demon slayer. They tried to do it but this attempt was not well executed imo.

Last issue was the pacing and it cost me to say it because I praised the pace at first but at some point it became too slow, they kept pushing the supporting characters in the screen instead of developing first the leads relationship. I won't lie, I kept moving forward and skipped scenes at some point toward the end.

The idea of this drama was a good one and I truly believe it but the execution is lacking in my humble opinion. The rushed end is the striking exemple that proves my opinion : good ideas, poor execution.

A Fantastic Story plot with great execution but not perfect

The long episodes makes this really fitting when building the world story, every important character introducted properly, with a slow pacing and each and every couple hhavve their own lore wthat sometime gettin undermined in a lot of dramas but not this. Every one get an interesting lore and interaction and often with a good connection with the main plot.

The visual is giving, and we got treated with a ton of it here, satisfying.
The Music generaly is good and fitting for the scene especially the romancing scene.
For me Female Main is casted perfectly for this character, she was born to be a cat to be honest haha especially the visual.

This could be one of the best really but there is some things that let me down bad. Its just feels like a waste of an amazing story and plot overall.
1. The lack of good fighting scene, often the fight just end in second
2. Dissapointed with some villain get put down too easly and too fast.
3. An anticlimax ending.

Like Why you do the ending like that? the build up from the start of episode to 38 and i was hopin an epic battle with the demon or at least a nice fighting scene but we got this. Its just really a waste of a great plot and story like this.

Well thats my personal opinion and overall is good and enjoyable, its really good for binge watching

Storyline had potential, but...

I love stories with romance, hidden identities, and a supernatural/fantasy background. So when I read the synopsis for Moonlit Reunion, I genuinely thought I had found the perfect drama to cure my Love in the Clouds withdrawal.

Unfortunately… I was wrong. So wrong.

First, a confession: I am a vain watcher. I like my leads visually pleasing. And here, I was ecstatic — Tian Xi Wei and Xu Kai are both ridiculously beautiful. But not even their combined beauty could save this drama for me. I tried. I crawled all the way to episode 33 out of 38, hoping it would get better, but eventually I had to accept defeat — I could not waste another minute on something I wasn’t enjoying.

The initial premise had great potential, but here’s where everything fell apart for me:

1. Xu Kai’s acting (in this drama) was… painful.

He had the exact same facial expression 99.9% of the time. I genuinely could not tell whether he was falling in love or experiencing severe discomfort — like cucumber-up-the-butt discomfort. His face was frozen: lifeless, stiff, emotionally unreadable.

At first, I tried to be understanding. We can blame the “stoic and aloof male lead” trope for a few episodes. But later on? When he’s supposedly deeply in love and ready to risk his life for the female lead? Nah, my dude. That’s when we need nuance, softness, longing — something.

Because there was none, the romance — the heart of the entire story — fell flat.

The script set up great romantic opportunities, and I could see the direction trying its absolute hardest to make scenes feel emotional and steamy… but they never landed. Without believable expression or emotional nuance from the male lead, everything felt forced and awkward.

2. The hidden-identity reveal was completely underwhelming.

With hidden-identity stories, the emotional payoff is everything.

Here? When the truth came out, it was so meh it barely registered. It felt rushed, and the male lead once again had the emotional range of a spoon. Not only that — he had already suspected her for a few episodes. And when the moment finally came, his reaction was something I simply could not forgive.

He had supposedly severed ties with his faction.
We are talking about a man who abandoned his life’s mission so he could pursue and love his wife — the same woman who had become his reason for living and his hope for the future. She turns out to be part of the very group he once swore to destroy, believing them to be evil and beyond redemption.

Wouldn’t this moment break you? Confuse you?
But you love this woman. You know she is not vicious. Would you not have talked to her? Trusted her? Asked for her reasons?

Seriously… Mei Si (from the second couple) had more of a proper male-lead emotional reaction when he found out his love interest was a demon than the actual male lead did.

There was almost no emotional weight on his side.
No heartbreak.
No catharsis.
Just another cardboard-expression moment.

At one point, I realized I was actively rooting for the couple to break up just so I could stop suffering through their scenes. That’s when I knew:

it was time to drop the show.

I truly wish I had loved Moonlit Reunion. It had every ingredient I normally adore — but great visuals and a promising premise can only carry a drama so far. Without chemistry, emotion, or believable acting, there’s nothing left to hold onto.

Dropped. With no regrets.

2025 Cdrama you shouldn't miss!

For Xu Kai & Tian Xi Wei fans this drama is surely a treat! 💯 I might be biased giving positive review because these two are my ultimate favorite C artists but you might be agreeing with me once you watch it also. The best way to describe this drama for me is superb in the following aspects:

1. Story - written & executed properly that each episode came out interesting

2. Cast - no doubt Xu Kai & Tian Xi Wei has an eye-catching visual screen partnership; the two other supporting couples have their own charm showing the purest of love on the part of the two secondary male leads - they are foolishly adorable; I was impressed by their choice of the male main villain having a soft & gentle face, a delusional aura that covers a dark soul on the side and has taken the characterization to another level; one drama I could literally remember every character even the smallest roles because none of them is insignificant to the story; I definitely praise Tian Xi Wei's performance here - her sweet youthful look & petite physique was not even an inch of a disadvantage to how she perfectly portrayed the authoritative mighty head of the demon underworld; Xu Kai's portrayal was undisputed also, their scenes together were the absolute highlights of the drama.

3. Camera works - phenomenal; breathtaking; watch and see for yourself the kind of visual textures this drama has

I could tell by now since it's nearing it's final episode (last 9 episodes left - huh that fast!) that it shall be on my list of all time Cdrama favorites and one I'm certain to rewatch even if the last two episodes took the edge off the drama's hallmark.

*** This is an updated review after completing the series.

A very good Xianxia series, creative (a bit too much for my taste?)

Xianxia & Fantasy Series with Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei \(^▽^)/

PLOT: The FL, a royal princess by day and a Demon Cat Lord by night, meets the ML, an incognito Taoist master who is searching for the cause of his parents' death. She is frivolous and cheerful, while he is austere. These two worlds collide. As events unfold, they fall in love and marry, despite their romantic rivals and their secrets.

+++ Super cute CL [Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei] with beautiful chemistry.
+++ Dynamic direction and superb cinematography (sets, costumes, fight scenes, landscapes, framing and lighting, etc.).
+++ The actors are all talented and bring complex, well-developed characters to life.
+++ OSTs that accompany/support the emotions: epic, creepy, moving...
+++ I really like the ending, especially the scenes after the credits.

### A twisty story where you get a bit lost in the twists and turns, with unexpected/inconsistent character changes [Villain friend].

=> A very good Xianxia series, creative (a bit too much for my taste?)
***************************************************

A bit too long

So i just finished this drama and i dont really know how to feel about it. It's not bad, the first épisodes was very good but to me its a story for a 30 episodes, not 38. There are too many slow parts and the chemistry between Tian Xi Wei and Xu Kai is not really big. It's enjoyable, CGI is great, sides characters are nice too and its worth watching, just i wanted something more deep for the story.

Xu Kai’s handsomeness is on another level here!

Personal Rating: ⭐️ 8.5/10

ML: Mei Zhu Yu (Demon Hunter / Exorcist) – Xu Kai
FL: Wu Zhen (Cat Lord of Demon City) – Tian Xi Wei

As a fan of Tian Xiwei, I was really excited for this drama. Like always, she delivered—her performance was charming, lively, and full of personality. But honestly, even with great actors and strong characters, the story itself felt a bit lacking at times.

Initially, I was very hooked on this drama, but I don’t know why it felt like something was missing—or maybe my expectations were just too high. The characters are great! A badass girl who is the Cat Lord of the Demon City, and a handsome demon exorcist who never thought about getting married or falling in love.

The story revolves around a demon exorcist who works in the Investigation Bureau (he keeps his exorcist identity hidden). He wants to uncover the truth about the heavenly fire that destroyed the city and killed his father. While investigating what really happened and discovering that demons were involved, he meets Wu Zhen, the princess of Chang’an, who secretly has another identity—a half-demon Cat Lord who rules the Demon City. This city is the mortal enemy of Chanxi Palace, where Mei Zhu Yu grew up and was trained.
While working on different cases and investigating demons roaming around the city, they fall in love. However, since they are supposed to be enemies and both have duties to protect their respective sides, it becomes difficult for them to accept their feelings and figure out how to handle them.

What fell short for me:
There are some episodes that feel dragging. The plot didn’t fully deliver on its potential. The ending was a bit confusing and felt rushed… How did he survive? Did he become a cat because his father is a cat? 😅 I honestly expected more clarity and impact.

The fight scenes are okay! There’s one scene where Wu Zhen fights Mei Zhu Yu when he tries to break the barrier and enter the Demon City—that fight was very satisfying. 😁 The CGI is great, and the chemistry between them is overwhelming! I really hope they get another drama together with a better story. 😍

Xu Kai’s handsomeness is on another level here—this might be the most handsome character he has played for me. And Tian Xiwei is so cute 😍 I think this is one of her best characters—the Cat Lord. 🐱

Overall, Moonlit Reunion is an 8.5/10 for me. It’s a decent watch with amazing chemistry and strong characters with a happy ending.. I would LOVE to see Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei reunite in another drama with a stronger storyline. Their pairing deserves something even better! 🥹✨

Bonus: I got a new crush on Wu Jun Ting—he’s so cute!! 😍😍😍

If you want to see Tian Xiwei and Xu Kai on a variety/game show, you can watch Hello Saturday. They were promoting their drama there, and they were so sweet and cute! 🥰

A nice fantasy xanxia with a gorgeous couple!

One of my all time favourite actor and actress and I loved the fantasy world they are in.

Costumes were great, Demon World was fantastic and loved the way they were styled differently when they were demons - edgy and cooler than when they are mortals. Final big twist related to the Cat Lord was a nice surprise.

Story is a bit weak with the typical posessive second ML though it tries to give some unique moments along the way. But all is forgiven as I love the main couple and second couple. Wish there was a clearer happy ending.

Of the fantasy 'Moonlights'-this one is better

I immediately started to compare this to Moonlight Mystique, and decided this was more intriguing, the costumes, sets and backgrounds worked far better to create the mood of the story, and FL's acting was fun-she conveyed feline so well!
That said, there were FAR too many 'wild eyed' stares from the ML 'villain' (such a cutie actor -so it was a bit refreshing he played the obsessed guy but see him in excellent cute-ness in Return of the Queen--this drama takes far better advantage of his gaze), Xu Kai seemed to be a bit asleep, and the ending had a clever wrapup but really felt like it was a "gosh we need to end this now" rush.
The second couple story also added length to the drama but not necessarily meaningful depth to the main leads story.
So added this review to have you consider which drama you prefer of the recent "Moon-x" dramas.
That said, in memory of Yu Meng Long, consider watching his "The Moon Brightens For You".

Came for Winwin stayed for Wu Zhen

This took me a little while to get through but overall, I really liked it! There were definitely some parts that felt a little slow or dragged out but not too much where it made the show unwatchable. I loved the characters, especially Wu Zhen! The costuming in these series is always so amazing! All the characters had great chemistry together as well! The CGI wasn't too bad either!

Not going to lie I watched this for WinWin for him to be in it for all of maybe 10 minutes lol

A Fantasy Ride

At the heart of the story is Wu Zhen, daughter of Duke Wu, sister to the Empress, and one of the most sought-after beauties of Changan’s aristocracy. Admirers line up for a chance at her hand, but she delights in making fun of and embarrassing them. Beneath her noble grace lies a shadow. As a child, she disappeared in a great fire that engulfed the capital; when she resurfaced, she was no longer quite the same. Bolder. Wilder. And harboring a secret that would shock the empire: she is half human, half demon—marked by what she encountered that night. Even more startling, she is the elusive leader of the Demon City.

Enter Mei Zhu Yu, the drama’s handsome and principled investigator from the Mystical Investigation Bureau. He, too, bears hidden truths. Trained as a celestial master, demon-slaying is not just his duty but his destiny. Driven by the belief that demons from the Demon City murdered his father through the great fire, he obsessively hunts for the city’s location, determined to wipe it out.

Their paths collide, sparks fly, and attraction simmers. But can love bloom between hunter and hunted? Are they doomed as star-crossed enemies, or will fate grant them a different ending than the bloodshed they both expect?

As light entertainment, the drama succeeds. It’s the kind of story that fills a lazy weekend with fantasy and whispered romance. Literary depth? Not much. Emotional nuance? Often shallow. Originality? Mostly cliche. Demon makeup? Think more Saturday morning cartoon than shadowy mythology.

Yet the production redeems itself in surprising ways. The costumes are gorgeous, the CGI delightful, and the soundtrack—gentle, wistful, and sentimental—wraps the narrative in the right mood, and good-looking key leads that keeps the drama afloat. And despite some flaws, the story does toss in a few intriguing twists that keep you watching.

I have a bone to pick with the English title of the drama. “Moonlit Reunion”? I must have blinked, because I didn’t see any touching reunion beneath the moon. Maybe it’s happening in a deleted scene somewhere! “Return of Midnight” may be the better literal echo of the Chinese title 子夜归, but “Return of the Phantom” arguably captures the soul of this drama far better—mysterious, otherworldly, and just a little tragic.

As is sometimes the case, the synopsis on kisskh does the drama no favors. It reads like a hand-me-down blurb lifted straight from the original novel, while the adaptation walks a different, more whimsical path.

So is it worth your time? As a drama, it’s charming enough and carries its own modest merits. Whether that’s sufficient for you is a choice only you can make.

A shamble of good and the not so good

The only reason to watch this is for the lore and light entertainment. The actors do a decent job and there are plenty of likeable characters but the plot is all over the place. The pacing is incredibly slow at times and I most sped through it all. The story itself is high-level interesting but has too many huge plot holes, unnecessary deaths, and love obsessions. It also has a tendency to build up a moment for that moment's sake and then it just dissipates with pretty much no impact to the overarching main story. Some of the actions scenes were pretty good but there's not much of it across a 40-episode series. The lore itself is pretty entertaining but they don't explain it much either other than to just indicate that its just part of the demon world. So with this, even the "rules" of the demon world contradicts with different events.

Nevertheless, it's a good time-consumer if you are in the mood for this type of setting. It's also one where you can walk away from the screen and do some chores while listening, and still get the gist of what's happening. And at least it does have its sweet moments and funny moments to make up for its many flaw.
