Moonlit Reunion was one of my most awaited dramas of the year.. But guess what, it didn’t live up to my expectations.. Maybe it’s just me.. Maybe I was in the wrong mood, or maybe my expectations were set too high.. I wanted more.. In the end, I could just barely bring myself to give it 8 stars.. The story felt a bit too stop and start for my liking.. Almost every time it seemed to be building momentum, it slowed down again.. With the kind of material they had, the drama really should have kept ramping things up consistently until the end, but it doesn’t..

The visuals were top notch and I really loved the cinematography.. The VFX though, were a mixed bag.. When they were good, they were really good.. But when they were bad, they were just plain bad.. Some scenes felt outright poorly done.. And the action scenes looked well coordinated.. It’s always fun to watch action mixed with magic, spells and demons and they did a good job with that..

I stopped counting the number of guys in her life halfway through the drama.. They really could have eased up on it after the incident with her cousin.. But no they had to bring in yet another guy in the very next episode.. The ML and FL already know they love each other, so what more do they need to prove?? Honestly they could have used that time to explore more important story arcs.. Twenty episodes in and we have only caught glimpses of how good the drama could have been.. If they had just cut out this unnecessary nonsense, the drama wouldn’t have felt so dragged out and would have been far more interesting.. Instead halfway through, we still don’t have an established story to follow, we are just stuck watching him get jealous over the nth guy..

They both have their secrets.. So how is this relationship supposed to work?? I can understand her reason for keeping it hidden, obviously.. But him?? He could have told her about himself, at least before marriage.. I guess his silence comes down to that promise he made to never speak of it again and the fear of losing the person he loves most if he broke it.. Still I think he could have handled it better.. Anyway, their breakup was inevitable.. When it finally happened, it was long, hard and painful.. But it had to be done for them to start over I guess..

Xu Kai was impressive.. He had very limited action scenes.. His fights, even though short and scarce it created expectations.. If he had a full blown fight, it would have been awesome.. That whole speech to the Miasma Demon after, ‘ Do you know what kind of person she is?? ’ was damn good.. And then the use of his sword with the line, ‘ Since it’s a secret, you should take it to the grave along with your life.. ’ Absolute 10/10 scene.. His face off with the FL was also really good.. Tian Xi Wei was equally impressive.. Their romance and chemistry were good.. Their romance was another thing we just didn’t get enough of..

I definitely need to talk about Wu Zi Shu, the FL’s sidekick.. Honestly, his track record is as evil as it gets.. He killed countless demons to harvest their cores to make her a full demon, without her knowledge obviously.. He kidnapped her while she was with the ML and unleashed the demonic fire, which could have killed countless innocents and the ML as well if he was an ordinary person.. He killed her evil cousin and his girls, revived her archnemesis Elder Hui and even released the dream demon to wreak havoc during her wedding.. He also had a hand in the demonic fire incident 18 years ago, manipulated Hu Zhu into a reckless chase that got her hurt and used that rat Elder Hui again to hurt Liu Tai Zhen and ended up killing Xuan Hui.. He said some nasty things to the ML that made the FL sound like an adulteress with immoral relationships.. On top of all this, he was the mastermind behind the demon uprising which he staged to lure the Changxi Palace to Chang’an and spark a war between humans and demons.. So, someone who did all of this and how did he pay for his sins?? With an easy death.. His last moments were the best he could get considering everything he did, that was kindness overflowing from the writers.. The more I think of it, the more it annoys me..

The last arc had its moments but again, it was underwhelming.. The amnesia storyline dragged on for too long.. The villains were defeated too easily and we still didn’t get a full blown action sequence..

I would say the script was good.. It’s just my personal feeling that’s swaying me toward so many negative remarks.. I am tired of good scripts being butchered for the writers kink for angst and jealousy.. This drama is a prime example of what could have been.. Such a powerful script with talented actors, not just the main leads but the supporting cast too.. If only they had refined the story and fine tuned it, it could have been so much better.. The ending comes a little too fast for my liking.. The last task felt very short and rushed.. And why did it have to be a rushed ending?? I mean you had 38 episodes to play with, yet we get another rushed conclusion.. Even though there is a post credits scene, it doesn’t feel like enough..

P.S. It seems the CDrama industry is blessing Cheng Lei with all its satisfactorily ending dramas…

A feast for the senses with an underwhelming ending.

Chang'an is a city of splendor, temptations, and secrets — a truth no one understands better than Wu Zhen. By day, she endures mockery and admiration as the rebellious and unwed daughter of a duke and the only sister of the queen. By night, she is the revered Cat Lord, the fierce protector of the Demon City that lies beneath Chang'an, a position that keeps the mortal and demon realms in a delicate balance. She has long been content with this arrangement, using society's scorn of her unconventional lifestyle as a means to keep her secrets safe. However, her carefully constructed double life is jeopardized by the arrival of Mei Zhuyu, the reserved and calculating newcomer at the Bureau of Mystic Investigations, whose agenda is as hidden as her own. With the looming return of an ancient and devastating enemy, and the worlds they swore to protect under threat, these two opposing heroes are forced to become unlikely and unassuming allies. As their destinies intertwine, their relationship blooms into one that is as complex as the secrets they keep.

From the very beginning, Moonlit Reunion lures us in with its breathtaking aesthetic, a world brought to life by the stunning visuals and enchanting osts. The vivid contrast between the mortal world and demon underworld is one of my favorite features in this drama. For instance, when the camera cleverly glides through the Ruyi Pavilion in episode one, it reveals the extravagant fashion of the elite, roaring laughter of the patrons, rich melodies of the musicians, and mesmerizing dances of the performers. I remember thinking that nothing could rival this visual excellence, and then something did. We are introduced to the Demon Market — an unparalleled explosion of vibrancy, chaos, and richness in a world usually enveloped by night — and my jaw hit the floor. This duality extends to the very atmosphere, as the drama excels at using green and blue lighting to signal the mystical encroachment upon the mortal realm. The seamless combination of dazzling cgi, skillful cinematography, and beautiful soundtracks is an absolute feast for the senses.

The diverse cast of characters are a delight to watch. Wu Zhen and Mei Zhuyu are compelling leads and true equals in their cleverness, competence, and power. It is the kind of relationship I can appreciate for the main couple of any story, as it makes for a well-balanced partnership. However, Moonlit Reunion is significantly elevated by its ensemble of supporting characters (such as Liu Tai Zhen, Mei Si, Hu Zhu, Shuang Jiang, Xuan Hui, Huang Yi, and Mei Wen Hua), who make this world feel complete. I am particularly fond of Liu Tai Zhen and Mei Si because of their nostalgic charms that are reminiscent of classic Hong Kong cinema; and their evolving relationship is captivating, making me tune in daily to watch their romance unfold. The exploration of the varied dynamics in this drama, even between characters with seemingly little reason to interact, also adds layers of unexpected depth to the narrative. For example, Mei Si and Xuan Hui make the most surprising and endearing duo of friends — they are my absolute favorite.

Among all the dramas airing at the same time, Moonlit Reunion was the one I had the highest hopes for — that is, until the story got close to the end. With less than half the episodes left, the story takes a sharp turn for the worse following the fallout between Wu Zhen and Mei Zhuyu. It is a transition made all the more infuriating by Mei Zhuyu's sudden change in personality. The shift might be brief, as he does revert back to his old self, but the damage done leaves a lingering foul taste in my mouth. As the narrative progresses, the high-stakes plot that has been so meticulously crafted falters. Instead of the epic showdown that was initially promised, the villains are disappointingly taken down in a series of anticlimactic defeats. The death of an important character makes me question my emotional investment in the story. It lacks the intended impact the writers aimed for and is overshadowed by the far more heartbreaking demise of an earlier supporting character. The rushed finale feels lackluster, leaving the story with some unanswered questions that I cannot delve into without entering major spoilers territory.

Although its underwhelming ending marred by wasted potential sets the story back, Moonlit Reunion is still a worthwhile watch. The drama's gorgeous cinematography, captivating world, and compelling characters make it a memorable, even if flawed, experience for fans of rich visual storytelling. It has been a few days since I completed this drama, and despite not being fully satisfied with the execution of the events leading up to the conclusion, I still can't help but miss the story and its characters. Perhaps in the end, the real reward lies in the journey itself, no matter how imperfect the destination.

Rushed Ending but worth watching for Xu Kai & Tian Xi Wei

There were other costume dramas released at around the same time when “Moonlit Reunion” aired. This drama felt like it didn’t get a lot of buzz compared to a few others. I waited and hesitated to watch due to its lukewarm reception. But, it’s Xu Kai and I have always been his fan. With low expectations, I embarked on this mystical journey and had a great time!

What I Like:

1. Wu Zhen (played by Tian Xi Wei) - I was pleasantly surprised to have a ‘playgirl’ female lead in a costume drama. I was worried that Wu Zhen is another cute and innocent FL who needs to be saved by her man. Luckily, she’s not and she’s actually the cat lord! Wu Zhen is powerful, independent, smart and forward-thinking. She matches evenly with her man, her supporting man and the villains. I love a strong woman who can dress up prettily, beat up some guys, crave attention from her man yet not be afraid to initiate affection.

2. Main Acting - Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei are both excellent in this drama. Both of them have very expressive, big eyes. Their eyes can convey so much emotion without words being spoken. Their chemistry is pretty good, though I wouldn’t say excellent. Their romance doesn’t give us a lot of sweetness and fluffiness, but the angst was quite good. Hey, both actors can kiss and I appreciate effort, especially a couple passionate ones.

3. Costumes - Set in the Tang Dynasty, I love the elaborate hair designs and accessories, and the colorful hanfu the women wear. To distinguish the mortal world from the demon world, the characters have a different style in their looks. I love both looks and we don’t have crazy, ugly demon wigs for the cast (maybe just some ugly, alien masks for the unimportant demons). Oh, FL has the sexiest ‘pajamas’ I’ve seen in a costume drama. LOL She always sleeps with bare shoulders and arms.

4. Cinematography - Chang’an is always vibrant and lively, no matter which Chinese drama you are watching. “Moonlit Reunion” did a great job in showing the colorful side of Chang’an with beautiful cinematography. Is it as beautiful as “The Longest Day in Chang’An” or “Luoyang”? Definitely not. But I don’t think this is an S-level drama either.

5. Interesting Plot - I like the plot and all the side stories of the drama. I might have liked a little more time in certain areas, but as a whole, the drama keeps me interested throughout the 38 episodes. For the most part, I like the pacing as well except for the last few episodes.

6. Bromance - I love the fun bromance between ‘Grandfather’ snake and Mei Si. An unlikely friendship developed between them, and I actually would like to see more scenes of them, and also with Liu Tai Zhen (Snake lord).

What I have Mixed Feelings or Don’t Like:

1. Wu Jun Ting - I love him in all his other roles as the young high schooler or college student who is usually the greenest of flags. I am happy to see him branch out to a very different role here in “Moonlit Reunion”. Having said that, I think there’s room for improvement in his acting when trying to act ‘unkind’. His eyes are too kind and sweet. He wasn’t horrible, but when he’s acting alongside Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei, he’s not quite up to their level. I hope he continues to try out different roles and improves.

2. Last few episodes - the editing and storytelling are choppy in the last few episodes. I felt like a lot was cut out especially when ML met the former cat lord. Though they try to show us some flashbacks, it doesn’t feel right. The ending was rushed and not properly developed. The great villains are easily defeated. I thought there would be one or two big fights or battles but was sorely disappointed. And hey, where’s the big baby? Never really made an appearance and I was looking forward to meet him.

3. Supporting Cast acting - I love the main acting, but the supporting cast is a mixed bag for me. Yi Da Qian is pretty good as Mei Si, but Wang Jia Yi’s Liu Tai Zhen is a hit-or-misss to me. When she tries to be cold, she appears wooden. The rest of them are good enough but not excellent.

4. Special Effects - The quality is quite inconsistent as there is some really cool CGI, e.g. the tornado of pages for Wu Zi Shu, and a few of the fight scenes and magic. But then, some other scenes do not have the same quality of special effects.

5. Makeup - Tian Xi Wei has beautiful makeup. But I can’t say the same for the male actors. When closeup, you can see the uneven thick white foundation (no smoothing filter on) and whether the guys shave properly. It bugs me everything there's a close up of Xu Kai's handsome face.

Although “Moonlit Reunion” is not a perfect drama, from an entertainment perspective, I had a great time. I like the main leads’ acting, the beautiful costumes and hairstyles, the interesting plot with decent pacing and nice cinematography & music. Despite a rushed ending and other minor criticisms, I am giving this a solid 8.5. I think watching this with low expectations and waiting for the right mood helps with my enjoyment. I’m also glad we have a costume drama that is not a transmigration or a traditional xianxia about the 3 realms. Oh, don't forget there's a small epilogue after the ending credit in the last episode.

Other Random Observations:
1. This drama has the most amicable and sweet royal family.
2. Xu Kai looks tired in a few scenes with big eye bags. 🙁
3. I’ve never seen the flower pinning ceremony at a wedding before.
4. There’s a lot of wind, therefore, a lot of flowy fabric, flowy hair.
5. The kid actors that play the younger versions of the leads are the two of the best. You’ve seen them in many other dramas before, and they are just lovable.

✨ Moonlit Reunion: A Lush Tang Dynasty Fantasy of Love, Secrets, and Supernatural Intrigue ✨

A 38-episode drama adapted from Fu Hua’s web novel :Mei Fu Ren Chong Fu Ri Chang".
Moonlit Reunion—a fantasy-historical drama set in ancient Chang’an that blends romance, mystery, and supernatural intrigue.
A richly woven supernatural romance set in the vibrant, alluring capital of Chang’an. By day, elegant courtiers walk brightly lit streets; by night, hidden realms of demons and secret identities emerge.
- Mei Zhuyu (Xu Kai): A calm, duty-driven official with a hidden identity as a celestial master or demon hunter.
- Wu Zhen (Tian Xiwei): A bold noblewoman—disguised in men’s attire and leading nocturnal escapades—who secretly reigns as the powerful Cat Lord protecting the Demon Market.

[The VFX and cinematography are outstanding, creating a visually stunning experience. The performances from both the actors and actresses were excellent, with each delivering their roles beautifully --- everyone fit their roles perfectly. Overall, the production team did a remarkable job, especially in bringing the fantasy elements to life through top-notch VFX and cinematography. The whole team nailed it.]
[There were a few parts that left me a bit disappointed. Maybe it’s just because I had really high expectations for this drama, but I felt like it could’ve given a little more in some areas. Like firstly, I didn’t really like how they wasted so much screentime on those flashbacks. It felt a bit dragged out and could’ve been tighter. They also gave way too much screentime to the second leads, Mei Si and Liu Tai Zhen. And after all that, their story didn’t even wrap up properly — we were just left with an open ending for them, which was kinda frustrating. Then there was Wu Zi Shu… like, what was even the point of his character? It felt like he was just there to mess with the ML and FL and stir up chaos in the Demon Realm. His death/suicide in episode 37 honestly felt like such a waste. Why kill him off like that? He could’ve had a redemption arc and actually helped everyone fight the Demonic Infant instead. Xuan Hui’s death honestly felt so unnecessary. I really don’t get why they had to kill him off — it just didn’t add much to the story. And then in the last episode, they still didn’t give us enough lovey-dovey moments between Mei Zhu Yu and Wu Zhen. I’d been waiting from ep 29 to 37 for their sweet scenes, and I was really hoping to see their child too but........ ] Aside from these complaints, I really did enjoy this drama a lot! The story was beautiful, the visuals were stunning, and the cast delivered amazing performances.
Strengths:
-Stunning VFX and cinematography – the visuals were top-notch, beautifully capturing both Chang’an’s grandeur and the supernatural Demon Realm.
-Strong performances – most of the cast, especially Tian Xiwei, delivered heartfelt and convincing acting.
-Great chemistry between leads – Mei Zhu Yu and Wu Zhen’s dynamic (even if underused at the end) kept viewers hooked.
-High production quality – from costumes and sets to fight choreography, the show had a polished, immersive feel.
-Engaging supporting cast – despite some pacing issues, side characters brought humor, emotion, and layers to the story.
Weaknesses:
-Dragged pacing – some parts, especially the flashbacks and side plots, felt unnecessarily long.
-Too much focus on side characters – Mei Si and Liu Tai Zhen got a lot of screentime, yet their storyline was left unfinished with an open ending.
-Lack of romance payoff – Mei Zhu Yu and Wu Zhen’s romance was underdeveloped towards the end, with very few sweet moments and no closure about their child.
-Unnecessary character deaths – like Xuan Hui’s, which felt abrupt and didn’t add much to the plot.

Despite its flaws, Moonlit Reunion is still a drama I really enjoyed overall. The visuals, performances, and unique fantasy setting made it worth watching, even if the story stumbled here and there. If you're into mythic romances, lush historical settings, and slow-burning tension with a sprinkle of humor, Moonlit Reunion is worth your time. Just be prepared for occasional pacing bumps.

Stunning visuals in the demon world

What I liked about Moonlit Reunion at first was the world and the setting.
Demon City felt unique and the opening episodes had a nice balance of mystery and fantasy.
I especially enjoyed the demon market scene, it looked magical and full of life almost like stepping into a fairytale.
Those moments made me excited to see where the story would go.
Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei also did a good job portraying their characters and visually they are very charming on screen which made it even more enjoyable to watch.
As the drama went on, though, I felt the main plot started to lose focus. Wu Zhen’s journey and her relationship with Zhu Yu were supposed to be at the heart of the story but instead too much time was spent on side plots about supporting characters that didn’t add much.
Some of these side stories were quirky and fun at first but they dragged on and ended up taking the spotlight away from the leads.
Rather than deepening the mystery of Demon City or giving more depth to Wu Zhen and Zhu Yu’s bond, a lot of screen time went into side relationships and conflicts that felt unimportant.
This made the pacing uneven with too much filler in between.
I really wanted to see Wu Zhen and Zhu Yu’s romance develop naturally but because the drama spent so much time on the extra characters, their connection felt weak and underdeveloped.
The mystery of Demon City also had great potential but it often got pushed aside instead of being explored further.
Still, I can’t deny that the atmosphere, creative sets and lighter tone made the show easy and pleasant to watch.
For me, Moonlit Reunion is beautiful to look at and fun in parts, but the main story gets buried under too many unnecessary side plots.

Charming leads and stunning fantasy visuals.

I started watching Moonlit Reunion mainly because of the leads, Xu Kai and Tian Xi Wei. It’s one of Tencent’s most anticipated dramas and with such a handsome actor and a beautiful actress, I was really excited to watch.
The drama didn’t disappoint at first. The drama-setting , costume are great, the leads have good chemistry and their scenes together are a joy to watch.
However, I was a bit disappointed with the storyline and the ending, Some parts felt slow, while others felt rushed which made the ending feel unsatisfying.
Despite this, the visuals are beautiful, the fantasy world is engaging and the leads did a great job bringing their characters to life and definitely worth watching.

A Beautifully Crafted Story

One of my favourite Dramas of 2025. While not perfect, it has everything you would want in a Romance/Fantasy/Wuxia drama. Was putting it off, but once i got started, couldn't stop watching. haha.

A Colourful Story of 2 world's co-existing, exciting action scenes, a banger OST, a band of interesting support characters and 2 leads that absolutely steal the show with their precence, chemistry, romance and action scenes.

Mei Zhu Yu & Wu Zhen - Characters that compliment each other so much, and the actors that brought them to life so well.

Xu Kai & Tian Xi Wei, when they smiled, i smiled, when they cried, i cried. Especially Tina Xi Wei her screen precence, her charm is so endearing, her smile so infectious. :D

This is one of the dramas i felt could of used more episodes. It seemed a little rushed toward the end, when they were wrapping up each antagonists arc. At times it seemed like they ran out of budget. Can't be sure.

Aside from that, this was an entertaining and charming drama.

Make sure to watch till the end, pass the credits!

My main issue is with the storyline

I think the overall plot was not entirely satisfying. It felt like the writers introduced several complex plot twists, especially in the final few episodes, without giving them the proper resolution they deserved. It didn't feel like a conclusion it felt like the setup for a second season that we might never get. The actors did a wonderful job bringing their characters to life. But a great beginning and a strong middle can't fully compensate for an ending that feels incomplete and hastily assembled.

What is a Moonlit Reunion?

I started watching this because I’m a huge Tian Xi Wei fan since watching her in New Life Begins. Not only that, the title had the Moonlit word and I’m a sucker for titles that have Moon in them. The FL was introduced as the half human and half Demon Cat, who’s the ruler of the Demon world that is built right under the city of Chang’an. Wu Zhen is the daughter of the Duke and the sister of the Chang’an empress. It’s very unique. I enjoyed the whole story. I went right into it without huge expectations. The ML, Mei Zhu Yu is a taoist from Changxi palace that was destroyed long time ago. He ventured down from the mountain to secretly investigate what happened to his parents 18 years ago where a heavenly fire broke out and killed a lot of people. The ML respects the FL’s boundaries and doesn’t mind her going to the Ruyi Pavilion to have some drinks. The costumes and set’s gorgeous. The characters were great. I love the FL with her kitty ears when she’s in the demon world. Tian Xi Wei was truly perfect for the role. Xu Kai’s character was mostly quiet in this one, sadly. I admit, their kisses were great though. As for the ML’s cousin, Mei Si, he was very funny. The actor was great with his role. I saw his comedic and emotional side, especially when Xuan Hui, the black snake died. Xuan Hui was locked up for a while under the demon world as a punishment. He was supposed to ascend as the rain dragon but was unable to because his heart was mixed with human affairs. I cried when he passed away. My heart was crumbling when I saw him in that box and Mei Si was holding him. I also understood why the snake demon lord acted the way she did. Can you imagine falling for a human and you get hate just because they saw your snake form? Truly heartbreaking. Mei Si was a good guy. He accepted demons, and even though he found out that the real lady liu died, he rescued lady liu after finding out that snake poison was being scattered around. I also love the twist where ML’s father was the original Cat master. That was a good one. The second ML actor was great as a villain here. Too bad, he harbored ill intentions. I admit, there were some parts that I got bored so I had to fast forward. Overall, it was a good drama. I just hoped the ending was a little better. Don’t get me wrong, it was an okay ending for me. I hate how little time they have in the end, that’s all. It didn’t felt very satisfying, to be honest.

Underrated Gem!!

Casting: I can't emphasized how spot on the casting is for not only the main leads but also the supporting characters. XK did not disappointed as our aloof and quiet MZY, some people may find his character boring but thats just exactly how his character is supposed to be. XK played wonderfully when emotions were not needed but when it came to the emotional scenes, boy did his eyes delivered. I am officially a fan of TXW, the way she portrayed the flirty, fearless, sassy but innocent cat lord was magnificent, I usually hate cutesy characters cause I find actresses often over do them and end up cringey but TXW managed to carry that out in such a charming and lovable way, I literally cannot get enough of her character.

CP: these two are sooo visually stunning and just screams compatibility. The short promos I see of them makes me think that they would be a hot duo in a modern drama. The kiss scenes are so well done ❤️❤️, I've never seen kisses so sensually done, it screams sexual tension in a classy way. TXW is one of the few C-drama actresses i feel knows how to kiss. XK as a good kisser is a given lol.

Cinematography: this is one of the new dramas that I actually don't mind the CGI, and its hard to come by! The backdrop, setting, costumes (I still can't get over how gorgeous all of TXW's costumes are) are so beautifully filmed, it makes you feel like you're immersed in the world. The soundtrack is also fire.

Plot: while the story is rather unique, it does contain tons of Cdrama tropes: crazy 2ML, amnesia, misunderstanding etc. The story is enjoyable to follow, was it perfect? No, I do think they should've focused more on the ML instead of the crazy dalulu 2ML, and instead give more screen time to our CP especially after the misunderstanding and the divorce, it would've been more satisfying to see how they made up post conflict. While I agree the ending is a bit rushed, I am just happy its a happy ending. The way the final battle ended, it could've went either way but I'm glad director/screenwriter decided for a happy route.

All in all I really enjoyed this drama and it deserves a much higher rating as I've seen dramas that are 10x worse than this ends up with higher scores. Over I Highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟

Let the kittens follow

Of course I'm biased. I only watch Xu Kai dramas. But I quite enjoy each of them. This one is no exception. I do like the strong woman leader he has to play along with. In this case, cat lord is a very noisy, spoiled, funny and witty lady that catches the serious and very introverted celestial master's eye. The whole story was well developed until episode 34. It may have been useful to have 40 in total, so that the ending could be displayed less rushed. One could cherish a 2nd season, but it took so long to get the permits for this one alone that we might have to be just happy with what we got.
All suportive characters were right on point, you end up hating the bad guys and cherishing the goofy ones. The soundtrack! these dramas have at least 2 or 4 songs that are mesmerizing and match the story so well. I will keep them in my play list.

I had so much fun watching this one!

For me personally, beautiful visuals, cinematography, color grading, styling, CGI, makeup, and decorations, are really important in a drama, and this one completely delivered. Everything in that regard was on point, making it such a pleasure to watch. The overall atmosphere was amazing; you could sense the supernatural elements just from the way colors were used. I especially loved the contrast between Demon City and Chang’an. The costume styling was also fantastic, particularly for the demons, where you could almost guess what kind of demon they were just by their look. The set decorations paired so well with the clothing, and the camera angles added a lot to the experience.

Even if the story hadn’t been good, I would have given this an average rating just for the visuals alone, but luckily, the story was pretty solid too! I actually started this drama for the “demon female lead” tag, and it delivered exactly what I wanted. Tian Xi Wei was amazing, her cat mannerisms were so well done, and her role as Wuzhen, the Cat Lord, is probably my favorite from her now. The cat itself was adorable, and the CGI for the animals overall was impressive.

This was my first time seeing Wang Jia Yi, and she was fantastic. She really captured the on-screen charisma a Snake Lord should have, balancing strength and emotion perfectly. Her sharp, striking eyes made her performance even more memorable. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for her upcoming projects.

The male lead, Mei Zhu, was also good, but I honestly felt the female characters were the true stars of the show. Mei Si was unexpectedly one of my favorites, his goofy character was so much fun. I also liked the other side characters, and each demon’s story was interesting. My personal favorite was the Camellia Tree Demon and the Princess story, it was so beautiful and touching.

The romance is definitely not the strongest aspect of this show, could've been better, but I wouldn't call it bad. Both couples still had adorable and hot scenes together.

Overall, despite the rushed ending, this was absolutely a worthy watch.
