Wow, Interesting

A woman's journey this is what this drama really was - her life of privelage and no worries only about her marriage and what's he going to look like etc., Then tragedy hits and oh, boy it hits hard. Her new life, can she overcome the hardship and she does with flying colors. The only thing she wants and could ask for is her freedom. Women aren't allowed to be free and live without a man or have any type of freedom not until another 200 yrs. So we could all kind of guess what happens. Keep watching because it is all worth it ( When you see that slap) She grew to love and respect the situation she was in. She helps many women along the way. Thank you for this journey. Sometimes we forget that many women have paved the way for modernization.

Women could not freely choose their spouse

A woman’s personal feelings were not the deciding factor. Who care's how they feel.

47 episodes. One red thread. A lifetime of fate, loss, love and survival. ❤️

I don't even know how to begin writing this review because, for once, I genuinely feel like words aren't enough.
I just finished Against the Current, and I'm sitting here crying.
It has been a very long time since a Chinese drama made me feel this much. I've been away from C-dramas for quite some time because I simply couldn't find anything that held my interest. And then this came along.
And my God.
From the first episode to the last, this drama made me cry, laugh, ache, rage, feel satisfied, feel devastated and then somehow make me believe in love again.
But what makes it extraordinary is that this is not simply a love story between a man and a woman.
It is a story about survival, fate, family, hierarchy, womanhood, sacrifice, loss and resilience.
What stayed with me most was the way the story portrayed a woman's existence in that society. Our female protagonist isn't loud, reckless or unrealistically rebellious. She doesn't magically overcome centuries of social rules by simply being “strong.” She observes. She thinks. She adapts. She survives.
And she loses.
Again and again.
Watching her lose almost everyone around her was genuinely heartbreaking. There were moments when I had to stop watching because the weight of everything she had endured became too much.
And yet, she kept going.
That, to me, is what made her strength so powerful.
And the writing.
The writing deserves enormous appreciation.
The screenwriters understood that you don't need to force romance into every scene to make two people fall in love.
The relationship is allowed to breathe.
The glances.
The silences.
The small moments of understanding.
The gradual change in the way they see each other.
The respect that develops before the romance.
It felt earned.
And the direction by deserves just as much praise.
The entire drama feels deliberate. There is so much patience in the storytelling. Details introduced early quietly return later. Things that seem insignificant at first eventually carry enormous emotional weight.
And then there's the red thread.
That red thread.
From the very beginning to the very end.
And when, after 47 episodes, they finally tie it together—and he finally calls her by her real name...
I was finished. 😭
Because suddenly you realize what the entire journey has meant.
It wasn't just a romance.
It was two people finally reaching each other after everything fate had thrown between them.
And the fact that he takes her real name only then... I don't think I will ever forget that scene.
And the actors. ❤️
Every single actor involved deserves appreciation.
Tan Songyun was phenomenal. The emotional restraint, the vulnerability, the intelligence of her character—you could feel everything without her having to overplay it.
Liu Xueyi was equally wonderful, especially in the gradual evolution of his feelings and the way his relationship with her changed.
And the supporting cast was fantastic. This drama genuinely feels like an ensemble where even the secondary characters matter.
But honestly, after finishing it, I keep coming back to the writers and directors.
Because this is what happens when the women behind a story are given the space to tell a complicated story about women, survival, power, love and fate with patience and intelligence.
My God.
They didn't just write a romance.
They built a world and made me live in it for 47 episodes.
I haven't felt this emotionally attached to a Chinese drama in a very long time.
And now that it's over, I already miss it.
I know I'll watch other dramas. I'll probably find other stories I love.
But some dramas become a memory.
This one is going to remain with me.
10/10. Not because it was perfect, but because it made me FEEL everything.
❤️ Against the Current — you broke my heart, and I wouldn't change a thing.

Great start until it wasn't

The first half of this drama was captivating and kept me coming back. However, the FL is not one of my favorite actresses. I find her boring, stiff, with little emotion, not to mention not the most attractive. I thought I'd give her a second chance, but she continued with same style of acting boring. I also noticed she never engages in romantic scenes I think she is too uptight. The storyline could have been a little clearer, I was uncertain at time as to where the plot was going. During the last episodes I ffwded to get to a more engaging part, I was glad when it was over.

A Story About Living, Choosing, and Becoming

Against the Current is one of those dramas that I did not simply watch — I became emotionally attached to its characters and their lives.

What drew me in first was Lanxiang. She is intelligent, observant, practical and incredibly courageous, but never written as someone who survives simply because the script wants her to. She thinks before she acts, understands the limits of her position and usually finds solutions by using her mind rather than making reckless displays of bravery. Watching her solve problems was one of my favorite parts of the drama.

More than anything, though, I loved what her life eventually represented. Her mother left her with one final word: "Live." And Lanxiang truly did. She survived unimaginable loss, created a new family with the Xu couple, earned freedom not only for herself but for the people she loved, built a meaningful life and never forgot the women around her who were trapped by circumstances they did not choose. Her ideas about women, marriage, work, dignity and independence often felt far ahead of her time, yet they never felt strangely modern or out of place in the story.

The Xu family was another part of the drama that I loved deeply. Their relationship with Lanxiang gradually stopped feeling like people pretending to be a family for survival and simply became family. Some of the warmest moments in the drama came from the three of them together.

I also became very fond of Lin Jinqi. His love for Lanxiang was sincere, patient and very easy to believe. He admired her intelligence and courage long before their relationship became romantic, and I loved watching that admiration slowly turn into love. He was not always right — some of his decisions frustrated me very much — but I could understand where they came from.

My one major disappointment in their romance is that Lanxiang remained emotionally restrained for too long. I never doubted that she loved Jinqi, because her actions eventually proved it, but he often seemed to give love by the bucket while she returned it by the drop. Even in their final scene together, her response of “One lifetime is enough” to a dying Jinqi wishing to find her again in another life did not sit well with me. I wanted, just once, to hear her love him as openly as he had loved her for years.

The drama is also filled with memorable female characters. Some made terrible choices, some changed beautifully, some fought against the limitations placed on them, and some never managed to escape them. I especially appreciated that women who might have been treated as disposable side characters in another drama were often given their own desires, regrets and paths forward here.

Up until around episode 39, I was completely absorbed. After that, the story began moving through time extremely quickly. There were so many time skips that sometimes I had to stop and work out how many years had passed or how old everyone was supposed to be. I wish the later years had been given more room to breathe, because there were still many events and relationships I wanted to spend more time with.

Despite that, I never skipped a single scene. Not once.

There were characters I loved, characters I wanted to shake, scenes that made me laugh out loud and others that genuinely made me cry. I waited from the first episode for justice for the Shen family, and although that justice came far too late to undo what happened to them, I loved the idea that their story would continue to live through Lanxiang’s writing and would not simply disappear from history.

I also really enjoyed the OST. The music complemented the story beautifully, especially during the emotional and reflective scenes, without ever feeling intrusive. Several tracks stayed with me even after the episodes ended, and they are definitely songs I can see myself listening to again outside the drama.

Against the Current was not perfect for me, particularly in its later pacing and some choices in the romance, but strangely that does not make me love it much less. There are already scenes I know I will return to.

It gave me a heroine I admired, a male lead I became very attached to, a family I loved watching grow, and a story about a woman who was once told simply to "live" — and did exactly that.

A Rare, Grounded Triumph of Female Resilience and Feudal Survival

Against the Current (兰香如故) sets itself apart from the crowded landscape of historical romance by stripping away glossy genre tropes and confronting the brutal socioeconomic realities of its era. At its core, the series is an unvarnished examination of autonomy, survival, and the quiet dignity of women navigating an oppressive feudal machine. What makes the storytelling so potent is its meticulous attention to the economics of servitude, where freedom is never treated as an abstract romantic ideal, but as something with a literal price tag. The series never lets the audience forget that servants—regardless of skill, loyalty, or domestic standing—are legally property bound to a single household contract that dictates their bodily safety, marriage prospects, and very existence.
The inner courtyard dynamics carry genuine weight because the show completely avoids petty melodrama and manufactured catfights. When characters hoard a few copper coins, guard a gold ingot, or weigh costly bribes against decades of forced labor, it is not greed; it is the desperate, exhausting calculation of buying back one’s own freedom. Whether dissecting the schemes of highborn wives trapped in their own gilded cages, the tragic betrayals born of desperation, or the plight of impoverished girls sold off from the countryside, the narrative makes it painfully clear that these women are forced to fight for survival scraps within a system designed to consume them all. Even in their darkest moments, their fractured solidarity and covert acts of mutual protection highlight an extraordinary resilience under impossible confines.
Xu Lanxiang stands out as one of the most compelling female leads in recent costume dramas precisely because she is not written as an infallible mastermind. Her intelligence is grounded in patience, domestic observation, and calculated survival. She does not chase reckless revenge; she reads the subtle power shifts within the manor, endures humiliating indignities, and quietly gathers the leverage needed to protect herself and the people she cares about. Her resistance is subtle yet unshakable—a quiet, stubborn refusal to let the cruelty around her strip away her humanity.
The central relationship between Lanxiang and Lin Jinqi succeeds because it earns every ounce of trust across a deliberate, slow-burn arc. Jinqi never acts as a patronizing savior swooping in to rescue a damsel in distress; he respects her guarded boundaries and proves his loyalty through silent, high-stakes protection. Watching their dynamic evolve from sharp suspicion to shared survival and eventual deep domestic devotion feels grounded and authentic. Concluding their story not at a neat, fairy-tale wedding, but decades later as they face the cumulative physical toll of a lifetime of duty, gives their bond the lingering emotional gravity of an entire life truly lived together.

The Quiet Defiance of Women Who Refused to Be Defined

Against the Current has, without a doubt, one of the best storylines I've come across in a C-drama.

What truly sets this drama apart is its characters, especially the women. Every female character is written with such depth, complexity, and nuance. Even the villains are not simply evil for the sake of being evil; they are products of their circumstances, shaped by a society that gave them so few choices. Lady Zhao, in particular, fascinated me. She is a woman who became hardened because, in many ways, the world never allowed her to be anything else. Not even herself.

Although the drama is on the slower-paced side, I never once found myself bored. Every conversation, every decision, and every character arc felt intentional. The storytelling is patient, layered, and, most importantly, it respects the intelligence of its audience. It doesn't feel the need to explain everything or tell you exactly how to feel.

For me, Against the Current is not a romance. It is, first and foremost, the story of a woman determined to make the best of the circumstances she was given, refusing to let those circumstances define the limits of her life.

In fact, I wasn't even particularly invested in whether the main leads would end up together. The romance was almost secondary to everything else. I was far more captivated by the women in this story, their ambitions, their sacrifices, their resilience, and the different ways they navigated a world that was rarely kind to them.

Regardless of their social standing, whether privileged or powerless, none of these women were truly free from society's expectations. Some resisted, some adapted, and others became the very things that had once oppressed them. Yet each, in her own way, was simply trying to survive in a world that demanded so much from women while allowing them so little.

Ultimately, Against the Current is a beautiful exploration of the art of becoming. It is a story about resilience, agency, and the courage to become something more than what the world has decided you should be.

A truly remarkable drama, and one that will stay with me for a long time.

A beautiful story of love, fate, sacrifice and finding your way back to each other❤️

Against the Current is honestly one of the most memorable Chinese dramas I’ve watched this year. ❤️ From the beginning to the end, the story pulled me in with its emotional depth, beautiful character development, and the way every relationship slowly unfolded.

Liu Xueyi and Tan Songyun were absolutely incredible as Lin Jinqi and Xu Lanxiang. Their chemistry felt so natural and heartfelt that I became completely invested in their journey. 🥹❤️ Watching their relationship grow through all the misunderstandings, hardships, sacrifices, and moments of happiness was such an emotional experience.

Liu Xueyi especially gave Lin Jinqi so much depth. His character went through so much, yet every little expression and every quiet moment carried emotion. Tan Songyun was equally wonderful as Xu Lanxiang, and together they made their story feel incredibly real.

The supporting cast, cinematography, costumes, atmosphere, and music all added so much to the drama. There were moments that made me smile, moments that broke my heart, and moments where I just had to sit there and take everything in.

This is one of those dramas that doesn’t simply end when the final episode finishes. You carry the characters and their story with you afterward. I know I’m going to miss Lin Jinqi and Xu Lanxiang terribly. 🥹💔

Definitely one of my favorite dramas of 2026 and one I would happily rewatch. 10/10 from me. ❤️✨

"A lifetime is Enough"

This is my first time writing a review although I'm watching dramas since 2019, Against the Current impacted me that much. From the first episode to the last, it kept me hooked. It's not your typical romance drama, but a story of a lifetime carefully carved with many lessons, hardships and glory, will make you cry and make you smile. The emotions are so genuine and realistic, the character traits are raw and human. One thing I absolutely loved is aside from the outstanding female lead, every female character got their own story, so thoughtfully detailed. Beautifully portrayed, amazingly written. Rather than believing in illusions of forever, cherishing the life we already got stands out the most in this drama. live , live like a wild grass . live the life you want, live for yourself. Even if it requires fighting against the current, live on to make life worth it. To me, the best watch of 2026! the fulfillment i felt after finishing this masterpiece, I will remember it for a very, very long time.

This ones soo goooood that it does something to you. Extraordinary story telling, amazing piecing of chapters. This drama is so rich and so poignant that it left be happy for a moment and then suddenly heartbroken. Like WOW.
What elevated this drama further, is that every charcter dead or alive, has something to say and you'll never forget them throughtout the drama. They all leave an impression on you and somehow you get connect to them.

"To live" is such a powerful message ?

Here comes the end of a tearful drama that I hadn't skipped a single episode! Always patiently watching haha.

By the way, they skipped one emperor reign, no? The emperor who annihilated the Shen family was Yongle, and then the infamous fat emperor... I think they skipped Xuande, straight into the kidnapped's emperor era.

If you've ever watched The Ming Dynasty (2020) or Xu Kai's Palace Feast, you'd have the idea.

It's breath of fresh air to see another POV about Yongle (since most stories brought him out as a nice emperor. But he led a treason so that's the truth).

Anyway, this drama stated clearly that it's not based on any empire/dynasty, but still, as a history enthusiast I couldn't help it 😆

10/10

Faltered here and there but stayed true to its core message throughout! This is the drama for me!

I love this drama so much and I have been keeping track with it from the beginning which is extremely rare for me. Normally, I binge watch the dramas. I love the themes of this dram which was very women focused as well as about being able to "live well". Even if the storyline falters one or twice it was nothing too egregious for me to harp on. I know a lot of people are talking about the ML and the romance but to me this romance was simple and realistic and sweet. Lanxiang did love him he just wasn't her entire would which I think is fair and true to her character. This girl's entire family was executed this is not trauma that you will ever get over it's something you can only live with and hope the pain lessens over time. The character development was beautiful and I loved each female character even the villains. People think the Du Cuique second half storyline may be overdone but I thought it was nice because it wraps up her exile and the fact that delusional women like her have always existed.

All in all this my perfect drama. Even its flaws felt so realistic and human to me. The ending scene with all the women then them disappearing one by one as time passed had my heart wrenching and I was in tears. Lanxiang being the last one and being a great-grandma... my heart can only take so much! The passage of time really got to me.

Against the Current you are the one for me and I love this drama so much that it might make me a bit sick.

Great political drama

This is a great political drama. I like dramas that I can bing watch. That means that it is very well done.
After episode 40 it becomes more of a family drama. Multi-generation drama and yes every episode until episode 40 was wonderful to watch. I do find that the last 8 episodes were stretching it.
