Cooking drama with military setting and strong comedy

For me it started really strong, the comedy is really good and food scenes are superb. Military is very good setting for this as i could believe most shenanigans which happens there and characters are very relatable. Lead actor Park Ji Hoon is strong as ever and Lee Hong Nae is superb at supporting them. I feel like all the other characters were bit on the background noise levels and i couldn't say much about them, other than maybe Lee Sang Yi who does seem to excel in comedies.

I'd have to admit that throughout the serious plot line was super underwhelming and i think it failed to connect me at any level, i get what it tried to do but every time i almost started to care about it comedy overwhelmed it and it just lost its flow with me. Thus latter part where it tried to do turn more serious, it fell kinda flat and i just didn't care for the latter half as much as the start.

Ending was another underwhelming part, it seems like they've already sold the 2nd season and didn't really care to do too much of a big bang for the season 1 ending, if someone told me this would've continued next week i could believe you. Villain so bad, i don't really have anything say about him, kinda non-character. Secondary villain was better by a wide margin but he got dealt earlier already.

Conclusion
Top tier comedy but falls flat at its serious message, strong lead and second lead while side characters kinda fell flat. Villain was bad and didn't really offer any ''scares'' during the drama, so i didn't have any delusions that main character wouldn't win.
I'd give it 8/10, it was 9/10 but the obvious season 2 launch soft ending brought it down.

Food, friendship and faith in oneself.

Even in a show that was ridiculously funny, they still managed to make me sentimental. The expectation that Ji Hoon would shine more than anyone else with his exceptional acting, here I would admit Hong-nae brought the feels more than anyone else. I couldn't help but feel drawn to his performances throughout.

Using cooking as an avenue to bring comraderie and belief in oneself was a nice premise. Light enought to be funny and heavy enough to include criminals with the right amount of gravity. I liked Ye-rin's determined level headed approach when she stood up as the lone female officer. Giving support to all.

I will miss this series. I half expected slap stick humour but they all did great with the script and physical delivery. I am happy that Ji-hoon took a chance on this but at any moment I was expecting him to cry. His very expressive eyes. All the prominent actors did well delivering a very believable rivalry. Coming off of the Bloodhounds series, Sang Yi continued his success onscreen. A worthy addition and I was grateful that his cameo was extended to a full main role.

A refleshingly appetizing surprise!

If I'm being completely honest, halfway through the series, I was sure my thoughts towards it would be complete indifference. Like so many other dramas that start out amazing and then just end up dropping in quality and general interest with each episode. I don't think I've ever been so glad to have been proven wrong.

The Legend of Kitchen Soldier is completely absurd, and it shines in taking that absurdity and pairing it with relatable emotions and feelings. And food. Because a good meal can mean different things for everybody, but it can resonate with anybody. And when it mashed the absurdity with emotions, that's when it worked.

We start out watching Kang Sung Jae, a newly enlisted private, get assigned to the kitchen unit in his outpost at Kanglim. He's just lost his father, people are immediately wary of him (thanks to a smiley face pin nonetheless), and he's got no real cooking skills. Doesn't help that he's staring off into the distance, all distracted because he's the newly chosen individual to complete "The Chef's Path" - a simulation game to improve his cooking skills, and the morale of all his troopmates at Kanglim through his cooking.

Each episode, he has to complete quests, through which he earns experience, and gains skills and special prizes. It's a literal simulation game. And it's beautiful in the weirdest and best of ways. Sung Jae is the protagonist of the game and you not only want to root for him, you just very much do. He's got all the incredible qualities you'd want in a protagonist and he develops as a character (because of the XP lol sure, but also more on that later). Whenever we see him get a win, we cheer. His setbacks frustrate all of us, it's just protaganist things.

This was good, it definitely was, but bit by bit, it felt like the drama was losing its charm. Sung Jae was still protagonist, so why? Why did it feel like the story had strayed away from its original plot? I've figured it out now that I've watched it all, but as I watched, I genuinely did not get it. Now I know - it was because Sung Jae was off the chef's path. For three or four episodes, the characters and the ingredients that made the show what it is, were sidelined to showcase parts of the plot that were integral in hindsight, but just not properly executed to flow well with the rest of the episodes.

Dare I say, once the focus was on the quests and Kanglim again, the show got even better? Seriously, it has been so long since I watched a show that has picked up in the second half rather than fall! So long!
Because it was in the second half that we got the best of this series - more appearances from the supporting characters, actual character growth that turned two (and maybe more) unlikeable characters into people you root for along with Sung Jae, a proper plot, and just some incredible comedy with a ton of heart. It's everything I wanted out of the story, and I got it!!

I could genuinely go on and on about how much I like each of the characters in this series. Every one of them was given the screentime and chance to become an integral part of Sung Jae's life and journey and I love it when a script can do that, give your protagonist all the allies he can imagine.

What more can I even say? It was funny and weird and so heartfelt. Yes, it had a down but the way it came back up was commendable. All the characters are amazing, the story is so good, the actors did a brilliant job. So why not give it a try?! It is definitely worth a watch :)

As someone who absolutely loves food and would read/watch anything which contains food, this drama was an absolute feast!! Every single episode had different kinds of food and regardless of how the cooking happens in most of the episodes, you get the main message about cooking in the end :))
Music and re recording was great!! While the acting and story do make it funny, the re recording is what exactly had me laughing even more xD
The comedy aspect was absolutely amazing. There wasn't a single episode where I didn't laugh. It was just too funny and the fact that they had grown adults doing all the stuff that they do in the drama 🤣 To be honest, it felt like reading a series of kids novels. Every single episode there's a new adventure for the mc to take on.
This drama also got me out of my slump. I was actually excited for every episode and was eager for them to be released.
When I saw park ji hoon, i thought this was just another drama where he's just a sad little guy but bro, he's not a sad little guy in this one.
Absolutely loved the rest of the cast too :D Ji hoon's family, his found family at the military (literally EVERYONE), the higher officials.
I don't know but this drama just seemed PERFECT to me. I would definitely rewatch it! Every single time I would feel like things are falling apart, i would watch it. Every single time I would feel like I miss home and food at home, I would watch it. Every single time I would feel like I'm losing interest in cooking/food or need to gain interest, I would watch it..

Hilarious, hearwarming and addictive

What a pleasant surprise—I did not expect this drama to be this good!

The drama strikes a perfect balance between comedy and seriousness. I found myself laughing out loud frequently, yet there were also emotional moments that genuinely moved me. It's a great mix that kept me fully engaged from start to finish. I was hooked from the very first episode and ended up binge-watching the entire series in just a few days.

I really loved the Solo Leveling element—it was nicely incorporated and added an extra layer of excitement to the story. The plot was solid throughout, and not a single episode felt like filler. It was a rewarding journey watching the soldiers grow and become a family.

The acting is top-notch, and Ji Hoon was amazing as always. His performance truly elevated the drama.

To sum it up: it's hilarious without being silly, and it has plenty of heartwarming moments to balance the comedy.

A Drama That Turned Food Reactions Into Pure Comedy

I've been waiting for this drama for a month, and I finally finished it last week. I absolutely loved it and gave it a 10/10.

This drama is incredibly funny. The way everyone reacted to Kang Seong-jae's food was so over the top and ridiculous, and that's exactly what made me laugh. While watching, I kept thinking, "What kind of drama am I watching? Why is it so hilarious?" 😂 Their exaggerated reactions made the comedy even better.

I also loved the friendship between Kang Seong-jae, Dong Hyeon, Ha Kyung, and his teammates in the military. Their chemistry was one of my favorite parts of the drama.

Can you believe this drama even went as far as creating a song for a K-pop idol group and having them perform on Mnet? Wow, big clap 👏. I was really impressed.

Another reason I enjoyed this drama so much is because the male lead never gave up. No matter how many obstacles he faced, he always kept trying. I still remember the final episode even without the system, he was determined to do his best and serve the best dishes possible.

Overall, this drama made me laugh so much and left me with a warm feeling. Definitely one of my favorites. ❤️

Food, friends, and fun

This show was so funny! I'm not usually one to watch comedy's but I loved this! I watched it for Park Jihoon originally, but I really enjoyed it. The comedy was so good, and I loved all the nonsense they were doing in this! They had Park Jihoon as a grandma, in a seaweed dress, in different wigs, and not to mention what everyone else was doing like the musical number! I love it! I can't believe they even performed the song on mcountdown, so funny!! I've never seen something like that done before! The food all looked so delicious too! Sometimes I'd be eating while watching the show and it still made me hungry. The cast was incredible too! So many familiar faces in this which is always nice to see. The story was pretty good too. I loved that we got to see so many characters and relationships grow. I think this was great and I can understand why it got so popular. I loved getting to sit down for some lighthearted and fun comedy twice a week!

More Than a Military Drama, More Than a Cooking Drama

The Legend of Kitchen Soldier surprised me in the best possible way.

My first time watching Park Ji Hoon in such a captivating drama.

At first glance, it appears to be a military drama mixed with cooking competitions and mystery. However, beneath those elements lies a deeply meaningful story about growth, resilience, friendship, family, and self-discovery.
Kang Seong Jae's journey is one of the most satisfying character developments I have seen in a recent drama. His transformation from a troubled soldier into someone who understands the true meaning of cooking was inspiring and emotionally rewarding.

The final episode perfectly captured the drama's message. While his opponent prepared an elegant and sophisticated dish, Seong Jae chose a simple homemade meal. Through that choice, he demonstrated that food is not only about technical skill or presentation. Food is also about memories, comfort, love, and the people we cherish.

Seong Jae's homemade dish may not have the most expensive ingredients or the fanciest name, but it carries something that cannot be measured by culinary techniques alone.
It carried his sincere heart in preparing it.
That is why his choice touched the judges and viewers.
In many ways, his dish represented his father.
It represented the soldiers he had cooked for.
It represented Ganglim Base.
It represented ordinary people.

The one scene in Episode 12 that deeply moved me was when Seong Jae remembered his father's words: "You become a real Chef only after cuts, burns, and hard work are engraved into your body." This lesson extends beyond cooking. It reminds us that mastery in any field comes through perseverance, sacrifice, and experience.

Park Ji Hoon delivered an excellent performance, supported by a cast that brought warmth, humor, and sincerity to every episode.

This drama deserves recognition not because it is flashy or extravagant, but because it understands something fundamental about life: "true value often lies in simple things done with genuine care."
As such, food and simple cooking can unite people; it has become a language of care, respect, and service.

For me, this was a perfect 10/10.

Laughter, Comedy, and Variety of Expressions

This drama is all-in-one consisting comedy, drama, and a lots of expression. Every single episode contains good comic relief to a bit of melancholy. Each and every actor has done a great job. The cooking scenes add much more flavour to the episodes.

As usual, Park Jihoon has done a fantastic acting, understanding the character well. His character, Kang Seong-jae, is such a sweet and fun character. Starting as a depressed rookie to a confident cook, shows the great portrayal of a good character development.

For me, it was such an entertaining series, I enjoyed every bit of it. Hoping that they make another season of it.
