Hilarious Food Dreams and Half‑Baked Corruption Plot
🍳 The Cooking & Comedy Hit the SpotThis drama was fun and funny from start to finish. One thing I really enjoyed was how every episode included a Seong Jae cooking moment, keeping the food theme consistent throughout. Every dish he made looked delicious enough to make me want to try cooking it myself.
I also loved the food‑dream scenes the characters had after tasting his dishes—they were hilarious, even the nightmare ones from the terrible food early on. The story around Seong Jae’s cooking journey was written well too. It shows him learning from the system but also slowly relying on his own skills and experiences. There are great moments where he has to trust himself, and those really stood out.
Romance is basically 1%. It pops up for about a week’s worth of episodes and again in the final episode with the reporter girl who always liked him.
🪖 The Military Corruption Plot Needed More Clarity
The other half of the story—the corruption case involving the military and the former Deputy Battalion Commander—felt like I was in the dark the entire time. The drama barely gave any gradual reveals, so the final explanation came out of nowhere. There were small hints here and there, but not enough to understand what actually happened until the very end. A little more buildup would've helped a lot.
🎭 The Cast: Mostly Great, With a Few Frustrations
Besides the villains, I liked almost every character. Lee Hong Nae was a standout with his comedic timing and cheerful expressions. Kang Ha Kyung also shined in the second half, going from a bully to a great companion for Seong Jae.
As much as I like Lee Sang Yi, his character was rough to watch for most of the drama. He finally redeemed himself in the last episode when he stopped being a suck‑up and actually stood firm to protect his soldiers and search for the truth.
And then there are the actors from “The Flavor Boys.” I honestly didn’t pay much attention to them until Episode 6, when Seok Ho’s food dream turned into a full music video. After that, I couldn’t unsee them.
🍲 Final Thoughts
Overall, this drama nails Seong Jae’s cooking journey but drops the ball on the corruption storyline. Even so, it’s still worth watching for the food creations and the comedy.

To me, this lighthearted comedy K-drama is a perfect 10 from the beginning quite literally through the last episode’s end credits. It was so clever and so much fun to watch that, even if I tried, I couldn’t come up with a single criticism. I honestly believe there are very few people who wouldn’t enjoy The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, regardless of their preferred genres or favorite tropes.Park Ji Hoon, as Private First Class Kang Seong Jae (shouting here with a salute), was absolutely perfect for this role. He nailed every scene. I haven’t read the webtoon, but judging from the images I’ve seen, Park Ji Hoon looks remarkably similar to Seong Jae’s original character design. For those in America who remember—or still enjoy watching—The Andy Griffith Show from the 1960s, the scripting of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier feels surprisingly similar in its construction. The humor is warm, character-driven, and genuinely hysterical, often reaching that same timeless level of comedy.

I especially enjoyed watching Seong Jae’s character arc evolve. He shows up at Kanglim Outpost as a lost, depressed, fearful young man, an outcast of sorts. But he gradually blossoms into someone far more confident, eager to serve his platoon, eager to learn, and determined to accomplish more. His sensitivity toward his peers, his immediate obedience to his leaders, his earnest desire to please Sgt. Yun in the kitchen, and his uncompromising loyalty to his responsibilities as a soldier first and kitchen assistant second all make him deeply endearing. Unlike many others in his platoon, he doesn’t have it in himself to complain about his circumstances. He has no choice but to accept where he is and make the most of it.
His sudden introduction to the Army Cook Quest voice—and later its screen interface—was an absolute delight to watch. Park Ji Hoon was completely convincing as he pantomimed his interactions while navigating the system. And whenever Seong Jae achieved a goal, earned points, or added another comrade to his cache, his smile practically lit up my screen. I couldn’t help but smile right along with him every single time.
Seeing him deflate, nearly reverting back to his old self at the cooking competition was heartbreaking. But then watching him realize he had not lost his skills and he could still do his best even if he didn’t win the one-on-one round was actually inspiring. I think it was one of the central themes of TLOKS; your mentors and teachers can take you only so far. If you have prepared well, trust yourself - your knowledge and your skills even if the circumstances seem to be against you. Do your best with no regrets.
I think we were all rooting for Seong Jae when military reporter intern and hometown ?girl?friend Jun Min (Jeon So Young) came running into his arms in front of both his peers and his superiors. Even though he was mortified by the attention, he needed that moment, not only for himself, but for everyone else to see that he was more than what they had assumed him to be: not a loser, but worthy of some level of respect. What a pleasant and fitting surprise to see them together in the end.
The rest of the cast was equally perfect in their roles, making this a truly unforgettable first watch. Lee Hong Nae’s lazy, incompetent, intimidating, yet ultimately loyal Sgt. Yun Dong Hyeon; Han Dong Hee’s deadpan, serious, but generously warm Platoon Leader Cho Ye Rin; Lee Sang Yi’s serious-but-maybe-not-quite trustworthy Company Commander Hwang Seok Ho who had his very funny moments; and Yoon Kyung Ho’s brash yet loving Major Sgt. Park Jae Yeong all delivered outstanding performances. Along with a stellar supporting cast, they created an ensemble that was impossible not to love. It was especially hilarious to watch these talented actors fully commit to the over-the-top music video sequences.
I enjoyed a fully satisfying ending including all the suspenseful buildup from episode 11 into 12. Everybody got their just reward, if you know what I mean, including the Outpost itself. I’m excited they left TLOKS open for a second season to find out what’s in store for Kang Seong Jae next.
I liked the Quest’s voice and felt the voice actress was perfectly cast. OST was just right for this drama and complemented every scene beautifully. This drama has already earned a permanent spot on my rewatch list.

The Legend of the Kitchen Soldier was such a fun and entertaining watch from start to finish.The biggest strength of this drama is how naturally it mixes comedy with enjoyable storytelling.
Every episode kept me interested and never felt boring.
The funny moments landed really well and made the characters feel more lovable.
The main cast had great chemistry and made even simple scenes enjoyable.
I liked how the show stayed light while still keeping the audience invested.
The pacing was smooth and easy to binge.
I enjoyed was when the main character’s cooking skills ended up becoming a turning point and surprised everyone in a really satisfying way.
The humor felt fresh and gave me a lot of genuine laughs.
Overall, it’s one of those dramas you watch to relax and have a good time — highly recommended.

smoothly delicious drama
A funny, emotional, delicious, inspiring drama. I liked so much, no boring moments. I love the connections, the friendship, the inspiring and support moments and also the courage to speak about corruption, and wrongly using the power . Cant wait for the second season. The food is the love language, is the family emotional connection.Just finished the last episode and want to go to celebrate with a good ribs Korean dish.
I think that military is so hard, and has a bad mental and emotional influence for most of men, and the food, the camaraderie, the integrity, the true friendships and support is the luxury for most of them.
Love it, I can easily watch 100 episode. Maybe also I will learn to cook. :D

A a great foodie and as someone who has cooked all their life, the precision in this drama was quite surprising. Like not only the food itself, but also the values, the timing and even feeling of cooking, everything was spot on! Like, has this been written by a cook or someone like me? Cuz this was hella good. I enjoyed watching this series. it's like I'm watching a live action of Camping in the wilderness, food wars with military theme. It has everything you are looking for. Friendship, family, etc.It's very funny and heartwarming series.
Congratulations to the cast and crew . Lee sangyi is now part on my list of good actors.
Looking forward to season 2.

When I first started this drama, I didn't think I would love it this much.In the first few minutes of the episode, the whole game concept made me feel like I would lose interest very quickly, but boy, I was wrong.
The drama was so engaging, and the characters so wholesome, from Yun Dong Hyeon, Park Jae Yeong, Hwang Seok Ho to Kang Seong Jae. You might think this drama is all about game-based cooking, but it's so much more; it does include important topics like loss, finding one's dream, standing up for the right things, and high-ranking military bribery. I mean, it's a lot. A mixture of comedy, drama and emotional scenes,
Of course, the main star of this drama is the amazing recipes. 10/10 I want to try them all! Not even kidding! They looked so delicious, and seeing the process of creation was so incredibly interesting. I won't be surprised if people start recreating these recipes. Honestly, I think they should open a restaurant that includes all the dishes because I am still dreaming about those rice balls they made.

The synopsis looked a bit meh to me as other kdramas have tried a similar path but all ended up being bad. This one was fun to watch, not a lot to take in, very funny and the actors played their roles very well. The music was nice although that mv in one of the episodes was cringe lol. Not Ready to Say Goodbye: My Review of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier and Why I Need Season 2
Just finished watching The Legend of Kitchen Soldier and all I can say is, wow! The drama was so amazing and entertaining from start to finish. I honestly didn't expect a military and cooking-themed K-drama to be this funny, exciting, and emotional at the same time.What I loved the most was the perfect balance of comedy and heartfelt moments. There were so many scenes that made me laugh, but there were also moments that inspired me and made me appreciate the importance of hard work and perseverance. Watching Kang Seong-jae's journey reminded me that our background or circumstances do not define our future. With determination, passion, and the willingness to keep improving, we can achieve things we never thought possible.
Another lesson I learned from this drama is the value of teamwork, supporting one another, and finding purpose even in unexpected situations. Sometimes, the place we least expect becomes where we discover our talents and grow as individuals.
The Legend of Kitchen Soldier was truly a fun and meaningful watch, and I became so attached to the characters and their journey. I really hope this drama gets a Season 2 because I'm definitely not ready to say goodbye yet! 💚🍳✨

The Drama You Don't Want It to End
This is the kind of drama I wish could go on forever. Seriously, how are you telling me it's only 12 episodes and not even 16? We don't need another boring, predictable romance or those repetitive thrillers that become exhausting after just a few episodes. This drama was such a refreshing experience, it genuinely lowered my stress levels because everything about it was top-notch. I haven't read the web novel, but the adaptation was an absolute chef's kiss for me. Literally cried watching the last episode. I want season 2 with 70 episodes now!!!!Was this review helpful to you?
Light, Emotional, and Absolutely Delicious
This is a light and cheerful drama about the daily life of a small military base. The plot is engaging, and the cast is simply outstanding—everyone acts straight from the heart, making the atmosphere feel incredibly alive and human. Park Ji Hoon once again did an amazing job and handled his role brilliantly.I eagerly awaited every episode. It was so nerve when Kang Seong Jae lost his skills. The drama beautifully portrays strength of character, dedication to one's work, and the difficult path to recognition. It is truly inspiring, evokes genuine emotions, and leaves you with a wonderful aftertaste. I would absolutely love to see a Season 2!!!
P.S. Those "food-tasting" scenes were truly something special. They reminded me of another drama "Bon Appetit, Your Majesty".
