i found the legend of kitchen soldier completely by accident. i didn't even know this drama existed until i saw people on a forum saying it was hilariously funny. after watching a few clips, i immediately understood the hype. the story follows kang seong jae, a young man who enlists in the military and ends up working in the kitchen, where he slowly learns to cook through a mysterious virtual quest system. the premise is simple, but the way the drama executes it is absolutely brilliant. the funniest part is how it visualizes people's reactions to seong jae's food—one bad dish makes you feel like you're drowning, another throws you into the middle of a battlefield, and one meal is so good they literally give us a three-minute music video. every dish comes with its own ridiculous and creative reaction sequence, and somehow it never stops being funny.

what surprised me most is how comforting this drama feels. i never felt pressured to know what would happen next because every episode was simply enjoyable on its own. this is comedy done right. the character development is genuinely good, and the cinematography is wildly imaginative. one moment you're watching soldiers eat lunch, and the next you're transported into a completely unexpected visual adventure. i even got emotionally invested in the puppy treat arc—something i never thought i would say about a military cooking drama. and yes, this show will absolutely make you crave food while watching.

by the end, i found myself hoping for a second season, not because the story feels unfinished, but because i enjoyed spending time with these characters so much. i still laugh thinking about seong jae winning first place against actual five-star military chefs. maybe his food reminded everyone of childhood, home, and their mothers while they were stuck in military service—but professionally speaking, losing to a guy whose greatest weapon is homemade comfort food must have hurt a little. then again, drama is still drama

Military Soup with XP Points

Becoming a Cooking Soldier Legend tries to mix military comedy, cooking drama, gamer fantasy, romance and supernatural mystery all at once… and never fully commits to any of them.

The biggest problem is not the absurdity of the premise.
Absurd comedies can work perfectly.

The problem is that the series relies too much on gimmicks instead of personality.

Floating HUD screens, experience points, unlocked skills, mysterious crows, dramatic soup reactions… everything feels engineered to look quirky rather than naturally funny.

The main character could have worked much better as:
a rebellious but brilliant cook,
constantly breaking military rules while being tolerated because his food keeps morale alive inside the barracks.

That alone already had enough comedic potential.

Instead, the series turns him into a passive “chosen one” with videogame mechanics attached to his personality.

And yes, from episode 1 you can already predict the romantic setup:
the misunderstood outsider and the competent female commander who will slowly become the only person capable of understanding him.

Maybe some viewers will enjoy this type of light fantasy comfort show.
But personally, after two episodes, I could not find a strong enough reason to continue watching ten more.

A Strong Start for The Legend of Kitchen Soldier

I just watched the first episode of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, and it already feels like a very promising series. The first episode does a great job of showing what the story will be about while still keeping things exciting and interesting. It has a strong beginning that immediately pulls you into the world of the drama.
The cast looks amazing and the characters already feel fun and entertaining. One of the biggest surprises for me was Park Ji Hoon. He really shows a different side of himself in this drama compared to the more depressive or school-themed K-dramas he usually does. This feels like a real comeback series for him, and he fits the role perfectly so far.
The mix of action, emotion, and comedy worked really well in the first episode, and the cinematography also looked great. Even after only one episode, I’m already attached to the characters and curious about what will happen next.
I seriously can’t wait for the other episodes!

O luto não trabalhado e a evolução do protagonista

Uma das grandes surpresas do ano para mim no mundinho da dramaland. Sendo honesto, o primeiro episódio quase me fez dropar esse dorama, porém fico feliz por ter continuado assistindo a essa obra extremamente surpreendente.

Desde o início eu entendi (ao meu ver) a mensagem que o drama queria transmitir: falar sobre luto, amadurecimento, depressão silenciosa e fazer críticas ao exército coreano de forma bastante explícita. Mas o que mais me surpreendeu foi como a comédia foi inserida na história sem jamais perder a essência principal da obra, que é, na minha opinião, a evolução do protagonista e sua jornada de cura interior e exterior após a perda de alguém muito próximo.

Durante a história, o protagonista recebe a difícil missão de provar seu valor não apenas para todo o batalhão, que desde o começo duvidava de sua capacidade, mas também de encarar de frente um luto que nunca havia sido devidamente trabalhado. Em meio ao caos psicológico em que se encontra, ele precisa encontrar um novo caminho para seguir, e isso acontece através da culinária, que desempenha um papel fundamental em toda a narrativa.

É por meio da comida que ele consegue se reconectar consigo mesmo e, conforme os desafios surgem ao longo dos episódios, passa a elaborar sua dor. Ele se apoia nas lembranças e nos ensinamentos deixados por seu pai, recordações que talvez nunca tivesse valorizado antes justamente por nunca ter enfrentado uma perda tão significativa. Aos poucos, ele trilha um caminho que jamais imaginou seguir em sua vida.

A culinária representa justamente essa ligação com o pai. É ela que mantém viva essa conexão e permite que o protagonista finalmente vivencie seu processo de luto. Ele passa a se permitir sentir, mesmo estando inserido em um ambiente que, teoricamente, não oferece espaço para tristeza, fragilidade ou dor. Essa é uma das grandes ironias da série: um ambiente criado para disciplina, obrigação e serviço acaba sendo justamente o lugar onde o protagonista consegue reencontrar a si mesmo e criar laços com as pessoas ao seu redor, que se tornam pilares fundamentais para seu amadurecimento.

Outro detalhe que considero muito interessante é o pássaro que acompanha o protagonista durante praticamente toda a história. Na minha interpretação, ele simboliza o espírito de seu pai, permanecendo ao lado do filho de forma silenciosa e indireta, guiando-o pelos desafios que enfrentará dentro do exército.

Também vale destacar como a crítica ao sistema de poder dentro do ambiente militar é muito bem construída. A série questiona um sistema que obriga os homens a se alistarem enquanto romantiza um espaço que, na prática, é marcado por disputas de poder, abuso de autoridade, falta de empatia e descaso com aqueles que literalmente estão servindo ao país. Existe uma falsa promessa de honra, acolhimento e reconhecimento, quando, na realidade, muitos soldados acabam tendo sua saúde mental deteriorada em nome dessa estrutura hierárquica que insiste em vender a imagem de um exército moderno e acolhedor.

Outro aspecto interessante é a forma como a comida também é utilizada como instrumento de crítica social. Enquanto os oficiais de alta patente desfrutam de refeições de excelente qualidade, os soldados das camadas mais baixas enfrentam uma negligência alimentar tão grande que, antes da chegada do protagonista, consumiam alimentos que sequer eram considerados dignos para pessoas, sendo comparados à comida destinada aos porcos no fim do dia. Essa representação da alimentação possui um forte simbolismo, evidenciando como o abuso de poder e a desigualdade permanecem presentes, permitindo que aqueles em posições superiores negligenciem os mais vulneráveis em benefício próprio.

Enfim, eu amei essa história. Foi uma excelente surpresa e um dos doramas que mais me marcaram neste ano. Durante toda a série eu me lembrava de "Silver Spoon", do BTS, pois acredito que a música representa muito bem a principal crítica social presente na obra, ao abordar temas como desigualdade, hierarquia, privilégios e abuso de poder, elementos que estão constantemente presentes dentro da estrutura militar retratada pelo dorama. Já "Dog Days Are Over", da Florence + the Machine, me remetia à jornada do protagonista, simbolizando sua evolução emocional e o processo de superação do luto. Assim como na música, o personagem passa por um longo período de sofrimento até finalmente encontrar forças para seguir em frente e enxergar um novo significado para sua vida.

Por fim, também vale ressaltar a incrível atuação de todo o elenco, a excelente direção das cenas de comédia, que conseguem equilibrar leveza e emoção sem comprometer o tom da obra e, principalmente, a atuação de Park Ji-hoon, que mais uma vez entrega uma performance excepcional.

To begin, I’ll borrow inspiration from my old review of Mr. Queen. To create a truly tasty dish, here is the recipe:
“Take a young, popular and likeable actor. Make him play a hero built around the universally comforting theme of cooking. Add an unexpectedly peaceful military setting, a generous dose of humor, passion, and human values. Sprinkle in absurd comedic situations and strong bromance. Finally, season it with RPG-like video game sequences where you gain EXP to level up, and a light touch of romance.” Based on the webcomic of the same name, kitchen utensils replace weapons, because the real danger is… on the plate. Here, there isn’t a trace of physical violence: no bullying, only a few squabbles, and above all challenges that are more digestible than dangerous. Why did this drama work so well in Korea? Probably because it brings together almost all the ingredients the local audience loves. But the real question is elsewhere: will this perfectly calibrated mix manage to appeal to our own taste as well?

Two months after losing his father, a highly respected chef, young conscript Kang Seong-Jae (Park Ji-Hoon) is assigned to the Ganglim forward base, near the North Korean border. This small garrison of 29 men is commanded by Captain Hwang Seok-Ho (Lee Sang-Yi), assisted by Lieutenant Cho Ye-Rin (Han Dong-Hee) and Staff Sergeant Park Jae-Young (Yoon Kyung-Ho). They are all very humane officers. Because of his parents’ profession, Seong-Jae is assigned to the mess hall to assist Sergeant Yoon Dong-Hyun (Lee Hong-Nae) in the kitchen. Not only is he loud-mouthed, but he is also utterly useless at cooking. The verdict is clear: every meal is a disaster, and the entire base is at breaking point. That’s when Seong-Jae is suddenly presented with a hologram that, like in a video game, assigns him missions to earn EXP, level up his skills, and ultimately reach the final goal: becoming the “ultimate chef.” Thus begins the epic journey of the Kitchen Soldier, whose mission is to rebuild cohesion through good food.

What immediately stands out is how quickly the series pulls you in—even if you consider cooking an abstract art. Indeed, food culture is something that unites everyone, across all generations. The concept is also introduced very quickly: we are not simply following a soldier in a remote outpost, but a character evolving like in a video game. EXP, levels, skill unlocks, quests, “resets”… everything is there. This RPG system is treated as a mental reality experienced by the hero—a way for him to cope and reassure himself. The presence of his father figure is also essential in the evolution of his “character sheet.” The outpost is not really an army base; it feels more like a friendly village where everyone depends on one another. Cohesion comes first. The drama deliberately highlights the positive side of military conscription—we are not in D.P. here. The war is not on the battlefield; it takes place in the kitchen. Cohesion around food strengthens camaraderie, and the show fully delivers on its feel-good promise. And to reinforce this concept, food becomes the catalyst for absurd moments: once the palate sends taste information to the brain, an explosion of flavors triggers hallucinations. A rice ball, for example, can spark a full boyband fantasy sequence featuring the Migak Boys’ entire music video.

Why do all these ingredients work so well and feel so appetizing? It mainly comes down to perfect synergy. This is a simple but enjoyable story, with a strong cast, sharp dialogue, and immediately lovable characters you can relate to. Above all, it highlights universally appealing themes: teamwork, camaraderie, motivation, selflessness, naïve optimism, and over-the-top absurd humor. Of course, this is not realism—we are dealing with a live-action adaptation of a webtoon. But does enjoying tasty dishes and sincere characters make us fools? I sincerely hope not. Cooking is a universal language, just like laughter, and both are appreciated in their own way. To spice things up, a subplot involving corruption in the supply chain adds a slightly darker note, showing the zealous behavior of certain higher-ranking officers. But overall, everyone remains well-meaning, with a paternal figure watching over the younger soldiers. Seong-Jae even gets his own awkward romantic moment with Jung Min-A (Jeon So-Young), a girl who has been in love with him since high school—without any manual on how to handle teasing from his comrades.

Of course, everything isn’t perfect: there is a slight dip in energy in one or two episodes. Some moments may feel repetitive, but the spirit remains intact and the simple lifestyle is respected. The pacing is generally solid, even if it slows slightly before the culinary competition finale. Everything is fairly predictable, but that is intentional within this “feel-good utopia”: this is not a harsh world, but one where taste and skill resolve problems instead of fists. This drama is aimed at a family audience, but not only them—everyone can enjoy it, feel emotions, and recharge their dopamine levels. Director Jo Nam-Hyung also shows growth here, serving up a satisfying dish after the excellent The Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938, which I also recommend. The adaptation of the webcomic—spanning nearly 200 chapters—is quite successful in tone and atmosphere. To be honest, without the “spicy” contributions of Yoon Kyung-Ho, Lee Sang-Yi, and Lee Hong-Nae (who is genuinely excellent), surrounding the very solid Park Ji-Hoon, the drama wouldn’t have had the same flavor. Without their punchlines, the recipe might have left a bitter aftertaste. Thanks to them, the emotional cooking ladle digs out the very best from the bottom of the pot.

Let’s move on to the bill—and rest assured, it won’t be too salty. If you accept the “set menu” formula and don’t try to over-analyze it, you’re in for a treat. Like a good ice cream, The Legend of Kitchen Soldier is a tasty, crunchy dessert—Cyril Lignac would approve. No need for Philippe Etchebest to restore order in the kitchen: Seong-Jae handles the mess hall like a true chef. The series whets your appetite from the very start, even throwing in a small twist in the penultimate episode to whip everything up right before the finale. It’s intense, joyful, and should be taken for what it is: excellent entertainment to enjoy with others. This accumulation of unlikely concepts works surprisingly well, mostly perfectly cooked with a touch of controlled madness. However, I did miss a bit more craziness, and the arc introduced around Captain Im Seung-Bin strangely fizzled out. But as someone not exactly skilled in cooking myself, I still enjoyed this gargantuan meal. (Private joke—this is for you Aude.)
The holographic interface still works, the ending is open… so, “Ready Player One”? And as they say: bon appétit, of course! (Joël Robuchon).

Uma história leveee

A Lenda do Soldado Cozinheiro é um dorama que mistura vida militar, culinária e comédia de uma forma bem diferente. O começo foi o que mais me prendeu, porque a proposta é criativa e os primeiros episódios conseguem despertar bastante curiosidade sobre a jornada do protagonista.
Conforme passa os episódios senti que a história ficou um pouco repetitiva dando preguiça de assistir. Não é um dorama com grandes acontecimentos, reviravoltas impactantes ou momentos extremamente emocionantes. Em alguns episódios, a sensação é de que a história anda em círculos. Apesar disso, os dois últimos episódios conseguiram recuperar meu interesse e trouxeram um desfecho legal.
Um ponto que preciso destacar é a parte das comidas. Sério, as cenas culinárias são um espetáculo à parte! Cada prato é apresentado de forma tão bonita e apetitosa que deu água na boca várias vezes. 🍜🥟🍖 Foi impossível assistir sem ficar com vontade de experimentar as receitas que apareciam.

Je n'aurais jamais lancé ce drama sans son casting... et pourtant...

Franchement, si je m'étais fiée uniquement au synopsis MDL de "The legend of kitchen soldier", je ne l'aurais probablement jamais lancé... 😭 genre, "Un jeune homme issu d'une famille pauvre effectue son service militaire et devient un cuisinier légendaire..." Sérieusement, ça ne vendait absolument pas du rêve 🤣. Mais le casting m'a titillé... Et quelle bonne surprise !!! 👀🍳

Ici, on va suivre les aventures de Kang Seong Jae, un jeune soldat qui pense simplement effectuer son service militaire jusqu'au jour où il est envoyé aux cuisines de sa base... Pour lui, c'est clairement une "punition"… sauf qu'un mystérieux système de "quêtes" digne d'un jeu vidéo apparaît devant lui 🎮... Et à partir de là, chaque "réussite" lui permet de gagner de nouvelles compétences culinaires, et son quotidien militaire prend une tournure complètement improbable 🤣.

Honnêtement, comme déjà dit je ne m'attendais pas du tout à ça. Je pensais regarder un drama sur un gars qui prépare des repas militaires… et je me suis retrouvée devant un espèce de "RPG" version cuisine 😭. Franchement, j'ai été happée par le concept dès les premiers épisodes. Les quêtes, les récompenses, la progression du personnage… tout ce délire çame parle et ça fonctionne bien.

J'ai aussi aimé que le drama assume totalement son côté barré 🤡. Il ne cherche jamais à devenir un drama militaire ultra réaliste. Au contraire, il joue à fond la carte de l'humour absurde et des situations improbables. Plus d'une fois, je me suis surprise à rigoler devant des scènes qui, sur le papier, n'auraient jamais dû fonctionner 🤣 (aka l'épisode avec le chien).

Après pour être 100% transparente, ce qui m'a le plus accrochée, ce n'est même pas le système de jeu vidéo… c'est cette petite bande de soldats ❤️. J'ai adoré les voir évoluer ensemble. Les petites piques, la camaraderie, l'esprit d'équipe… petit à petit, ils deviennent une famille, et c'est clairement ce qui m'a donné envie d'enchaîner les épisodes. Je vais meme assumer être restée davantage pour eux que pour l'intrigue principale 🤭🤗.

Ensuite, un autre énorme point fort : la cuisine 🍜... Décidément, ses derniers temps, les dramas coréens savent vraiment comment nous donner faim 🤣 (coucou "Bon appétit, your majesty"). Les plats sont magnifiques, et ici, cuisiner devient une façon de réconforter les autres, de créer des liens et parfois même de réparer certaines blessures... J'ai trouvé cette symbolique vraiment touchante 🫶🏻.

Un petit mot aussi sur Park Ji Hoon 👏🏻. J'ai beaucoup aimé le voir dans un registre différent. Franchement, je l'ai trouvé vraiment convaincant dans ce rôle.

J'ai aussi beaucoup aimé la conclusion. Jai trouvé que le concours final apporte une très belle symbolique. Le fait que Seong Jae réussisse grâce à son propre talent, sans dépendre d'un quelconque "cheat" du système, montre qu'au final il est devenu un excellent cuisinier par lui-même… tout en rendant un bel hommage à son père 🥹. J'ai trouvé cette fin chaleureuse, satisfaisante et totalement cohérente avec tout ce que le drama raconte depuis le début.

Bref, "The legend of kitchen soldier" ne sera probablement pas le drama de l'année pour moi… mais il a au moins le mérite d'oser quelque chose de différent 👍🏻. Genre, mélanger le service militaire, la cuisine et des mécaniques de RPG, il fallait quand même y penser 🤣. Mais "GG", le résultat est drôle, original, porté par une super bande de personnages qui ramène une ambiance pleine de bonne humeur. Franchement, je ne pensais pas autant accrocher… et c'est exactement le genre de surprise que j'adore découvrir ✌🏻
