This is going to be a weird review. Just saying.

I watched 9 eps when it was first released. I then lost track of it when I got swamped by other dramas. I only realised I never finished this series when I read that it has won the 2026 Blue Dragon award for Best Drama! Eh? What?!

Ummm, why am I lying on the floor?

Let's take a step back. This show looks like a workplace sitcom set in a small Korean army border outpost. An unique location and a quirky fish out of water plot is a match Made in Korea.

The ML felt directionless and joins the army after the passing of his father. There are some hazing and an undercurrent of corruption/embezzlement. Our indomitable ML must complete "quests" so that he can "level up" in his journey to become an army master chef(!).

Yes, you read that right. This show is gamified with a virtual AI assistant, power ups, interactive VR like display that only the ML can see and hear. He is rewarded with new recipes, abilities and level up his skills just like a computer game.

There is no explanation why he is the Chosen One nor what is his purpose. He wears no VR glasses, doesn't have implants nor sign of divine intervention. So how does it work? You really have to suspend your disbelief.

This drama is uplifting, funny, heartwarming and sentimental in roughly equal measures. It is a solid production with a decent ensemble cast. Our ML is an idol, but he is not a top star, yet. I don't think they had a big budget, but it was well used. I can't recall any OST.

There is also barely any romance. The ML is supposed to have a girlfriend, or should I say a girl claims to be his girlfriend while he looks on in shock during one early episode. She is doing all the chasing and heavy lifting. Yes, we did get confirmation in the dying minutes of the series, but that is so low key it barely registered. That's fine, it never claims to be a rom-com. Filler subplot, tick.

Just to reinforce that sitcom feel, the show has an episodic structure. The ML will be confronted with a problem/quest per ep, he must overcome it thus earning EXP which allows him to level up. It works and this is how games hook a player. The feedback loop gives you little dopamine hits. The desire to get good and level up smooths out gameplay bumps and make mindless grinds bearable.

Here lies my conundrum. After finishing this drama, I can see its good points. The show has a strong Band of Brothers vibe. Enemies becomes friends, friends become buddies. The underdog facing off with the antagonist. Hwaiting! These are all good stuff, if somewhat cliché. There are just enough angst to add some spice. Nothing too dramatic or dangerous. The show aimed to please.

On the flip side, it is hard to ignore the cliché characters and the simplistic world building. All the stereotypes are there. Mildly incompetent commander, earnest platoon leader, cynical career soldier and the practice of jamming square blocks into round holes, army style.

Most of those characters are from central casting. If they have a backstory, it is one sentence long. Of course, most of them have hearts of gold and they are just misunderstood. You get the picture.

OBTW, there are some nice food porn. They feel like magazine shoots. Beautiful and staged. The AI assistant literally tells the ML when the oil temperature is perfect and what ingredients to use and their quality/quantity. I want that assistant in my brain, now!

We do see the ML comes full circle in the end. It is a nice touch and is quite sentimental. I appreciated that until the ML’s father shows up and gives him a thumbs up. It is so cheesy.

I can see why the local audiences will give this series bonus points because they can relate to the characters and its many subplots.

In the end, the series is entertaining. It can be a hoot at times and who doesn't want to cheer on an underdog. It also has its flaws. Is it the best k-drama I have watched in the last 12 months? No.

Congratulations to all involved for winning the Blue Dragon. I shall reserve my judgement. Peace.

P.S. There is a strong hint of a second season. I can see it happening.

Comfort Food, Comfort People, Comfort Drama

This wasn't even on my watchlist.

A rainy weekend ruined all my outdoor plans, so I found myself browsing HBO Max looking for something short to binge. I clicked on The Legend of the Kitchen Soldier because I genuinely thought the thumbnail featured a cute female lead. It wasn't until a few minutes into the first episode that I suddenly realised, "Wait... that's Park Ji-hoon from Weak Hero!" I honestly didn't recognise him at first, and now I can't imagine anyone else playing Kang Seong-jae.

If someone had told me I'd become emotionally invested in a military fantasy where the protagonist levels up his cooking through a mysterious RPG-style "System," I would've laughed. Yet here I am, completely attached to this wonderfully bizarre little drama.

What initially feels like a silly cooking comedy slowly reveals itself to be a story about grief, trauma, healing and learning how to live again after losing everything. The "System" isn't simply a fun fantasy gimmick. It's almost symbolic of Seong-jae's desperate attempt to keep moving forward after his father's death. Watching him rely less and less on it as he gains confidence in himself becomes one of the most satisfying parts of the series.

I was rooting for Seong-jae from the very beginning. Every cooking challenge felt like a personal victory, and every new dish became another step towards healing. The biggest payoff comes in the finale when he no longer needs the System to tell him what to do. Instead of depending on magical quests, he cooks because he genuinely wants to make people happy. That moment perfectly completes his character arc. The System may have guided him, but it never truly made him the cook he became.

As someone who loves cooking and trying different dishes, this drama was incredibly satisfying to watch. Every meal looked amazing, but it wasn't just food for the sake of making viewers hungry. Each dish carried emotional weight. The final episodes especially drove that home. The explanation of what a home-cooked meal represents genuinely got to me. Food isn't just nourishment. It's family. It's comfort. It's the people waiting for you at home.

The friendships completely stole the show.

Watching Seong-jae slowly earn the trust of Dong-hyeon, Ha-kyung and the rest of the soldiers was far more rewarding than solving the mystery itself. I loved how the drama gradually peeled back everyone's layers. The soldiers who initially came across as rude, cold or difficult all had understandable reasons for behaving the way they did. Their backstories completely changed my first impressions, making the enemies-to-friends progression feel earned instead of forced. By the end, I felt like I was stationed at Gangrim Post alongside them.

I also couldn't get enough of Seong-jae and Jung Min-a. They barely get any romantic development compared to other K-dramas, but every single scene between them radiated warmth and comfort. Sometimes less really is more. Their chemistry quietly worked without needing dramatic love confessions or unnecessary relationship angst.

One thing I didn't expect was just how hilarious this series would be. The soldiers reacting to Seong-jae's cooking as though they'd ascended into another dimension never stopped being funny. Every tasting scene became more ridiculous than the last, and I found myself constantly asking, "What am I even watching?" The drama fully commits to its absurd humour, and that's exactly why it works.

I also have to applaud the production team for going above and beyond. Creating an original K-pop idol group, producing an actual song and having it performed on Mnet wasn't something they needed to do, but it made the world feel even richer.

The final mystery surrounding Seong-jae's father isn't particularly groundbreaking, and the last two episodes are mostly about connecting the remaining pieces together. Honestly, though, I didn't mind. By that point I wasn't watching for the conspiracy anymore. I was watching for these characters. I wanted to see Seong-jae succeed, I wanted to see everyone share another meal together, and I wanted this little military family to get their happy ending.

Every single character became lovable. Every goodbye felt bittersweet. By the time the credits rolled, I realised I'd become just as attached to Gangrim Post as Seong-jae had.

This isn't a drama that demands intense analysis or endless theory crafting. It's simple, heartfelt and incredibly sincere. It knows exactly what kind of story it wants to tell, and it tells it with warmth, humour and honesty.

I started this series because I was bored.

I finished it feeling comforted, unexpectedly emotional, and craving a home-cooked meal.

Sometimes the simplest stories leave the biggest impression.

One of my favourite comfort dramas of the year.

What a surprise!

I'm having a difficult time putting into words how I felt about this show. First, my life as I know it was put on hold so I could binge this in two days.

So much to love:
-the cast. If you have been watching K-dramas for a while, you will recognize many, many of the people in this. I enjoy seeing actors that I've seen in other works. The ML was wonderful, very understated. You could feel how lost he was, and how he didn't believe in himself. Watching him step up, open up, and change his priorities was lovely.
-the story. It was pretty original. For anyone that plays games online, you'll love this.
-the comedy. Sometimes it was just silly, but it worked.
-the music. The music served perfectly to draw emotions from you.
-the emotions. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried on multiple occasions.
-the friendships. This, to me, was all about the friendships. Pay attention at the beginning and notice how disjointed all the soldiers are. Misfits, miserable, not caring about each other. By the end of the show, there were numerous beautiful friendships formed.

My only slight complaint is, and this is true of most shows, that it's very obvious who the villain/s is/are in this. It's very rare to watch something where the villain is a surprise.

I started watching this because I haven't been able to find a decent romance. This was to fill my time, and ended up being so much more!

My 1st non rom com drama. Surprisingly loved it

The drama was an absolute stress buster with nothing that'd stress you out. It's something you can watch to relax during a stressful day. The story was pretty good, kinda like a game where you're waiting for the next level to see what new elements have been added. From what I see I am guessing this will have a sequel in future.

I really liked Kang Song Jae.. but Yun Dong Hyeon just stole my heart since ep 1. Eventhough he looked big and scary. He's always been the protector both in case of Song Jae and Gwan Cheol (the bratty one). I loved his character a lot. The blend of softness with roughness was done really good. I am really curious how his life wa s after the military? Was his gf cheating on him? (Cz i sus that)? Will he meet this gang again? What his job would be? Etc.

Coming to the reason I dropped the rating was cz I felt some pieces were missing. Like the office mess chef's star. We never got to see that. Also the reason behind this whole game thing. Why did it start in the 1st place. Sometimes their reactions to the food was not something I was much interested in although it was fun the 1st few times later i skipped that part😂😂. The summary said this was about the secret behind the father's death..but there was nothing in the series that showed this so it's an 8.5 for me. It's a good watch

Food analogy: Buffet.

I always start my reviews with some kind of food analogy but this series has so much food in it that i had to buffet it.

It is not just the food but Comedy gold. The story is incredibly heartwarming, filled with friendship and character growth. "Status window" Webtoon have long been famous in korea, it was high that it would enter the kdrama market as well. What i can tell you is that you would need tissues because you will cry while laughing so damn hard in every episode. The plot is pretty straight forward but the beauty is in thr form in which the story is told. To some it may seem like white washing the military like but i choose to believe that friendly military camps might exist, atleast in my imagination it does.

Watch for the cute characters that will make you root for them as well as the light undertone of predictable mystery will give this show an umami flavour.

Good watch for heavy days.

Almost legendary

Seongjae, after the death of his father, gets enlisted in the military and he sees a strange video game-like quest that helps him improve his cooking.

What I Love
The magical interface that helps him cook is peak and it’s so much more with the dislike/like meter that people have towards him, adds some drama. The side characters are also so good and full of life, they have depth and I empathize with all of them. Kdramas are really good at having multiple plots and mystery and this is no exception. The cliffhangers are so good. I also like the wacky visions and the crazy reactions to his food, even if it’s a little much at times. My favourite episodes were where Seongjae was a fish out of water.

What I Don’t Love
The outdoor training episodes are really mediocre and it feels like a bad military cosplay. Certain scenes are not shown to the audience, did he give him the body wash? This show has awful North Korean representation and the intro uses AI which sucks.

Nitpick
At the beginning I really felt like Seongjae should’ve gay. While this story never really focuses on romance, it would’ve added depth to his character.

Nom Nom Nom: From We Eat to Live, To We Live to Eat

Food for me is something I'm very passionate about, passively as of now. (I just watch people cooking on YouTube) But, growing up I was very into cooking. So after school, I'd always be whipping something in the kitchen. After cooking up that, I'd wait in anticipation for approval from my mom. These days it's just with tea, my whole soul is content in knowing she liked what I made. That's why, watching this was so fun and fulfilling.

Kang Seong-jae joins the military and is sent to Ganglim Outpost, he gets assigned to the Mess Hall where he is made incharge of prepping meals for all the soldiers alongside Sergeant Yoon Dong-hyun who is known for being the worst cook. As Seong-jae worries in peril, a video game interface like window pops up turning over the gloom in his life and giving him a purpose of becoming chef. It's the first chapters in 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier.'

Jumping in to squeal on how adorable Park Ji-hoon was. Kang Seong-jae was an aloof character who at the beginning of the journey is disinterested in life, grieving the loss of his father. We see his glum countenance change as he begins to enjoy cooking that started as an obligation. Ji-hoon's performance was heartwarming. Seong-jae deserves headpats! His character was rewarding to watch.

Yoon Dong-hyun was stressing at start as he was disastrous at cooking but we learn he is good-hearted, he becomes a good assistant and a reliable support for seong-jae. One of my favorite characters, he is amusing. So many chummy and endearing characters that will grow on you as you watch the show. It's like finding dumplings and you get to stuff them. Or plushies!

The show gives us cooking, comedy and camaraderie. The love for food we all have and how it can melt hearts and bring people together. Seong-jae does this very magic, he makes the soldiers happy and solves the problems that threaten the peace of their military base with food and sincerity, he also discovers his path for life and dedicates himself for cooking.

Cooking was such an engaging part, I wished to see the process longer haha. Made me want to work on my knife skills too. (made me drool too) Learned a few things I won't get to use unless I give cooking and the dishes they made a try but still nice to have that knowledge. Cooking is a creative process, but it also requires a lot of strength and focus, we see our protagonist challenged by new quests and how they help him learn and improve. In a grim and tough space of military away from home, a place where everyone can rejuvenate and relax a bit is the mess hall. Seong-jae brings warmth and comfort to the tables of his comrades, blessing their tastebuds with delight, making them feel at home a little.

There are over the top reactions to the food they eat ofc, I need to make a comparison with Bon Appetit, Your Majesty here the thematics weren't as good as that and were a bit of a stretch but, the whole kpop MV haha that was fun.
Seong-jae and Dong-hyun's companionship was truly heartwarming, I adored their friendship. The acting was really good, I'd like to talk more about the other characters but man that's gonna be long. They do have distinct personalities and are comical at times but entertaining overall.

Now talking about things that I didn't like, minor spoilers, Cho ye-rin was a nice supporting character and her past adds quite some mystery that I thought would be properly unveiled in the last few eps but it gets scantily presented rushing to the finale of the show. The romance felt unnecessary it wasn't much but agh, the actress was pretty though. Watching Dong-hyun waste so much of food gave me a headache, it goes to the pigs but still. ACK! MY HEART! Annoying AI in the INTRO, WAS I TRIPPING OR IS IT AI BEING SHOVED DOWN MY THROAT AGAIN?? ahem...that threw me off I meant I really used to love watching intros, but man do we need to do this to me? Jebal no use AI AGHH! Also pacing at times was slow, the expressions exaggerated were too much to handle sometimes. I wished to see more interactions from and with side characters as well.

The OST is just alright, the intro song was good but seeing the AI generated intro turned my mood weird, come on why AI...Maybe Too Far Away is good, listening to it now. Not bad.

Good show; there is food, Park Ji-hoon, bromance and more food YAY! That's all from me, enjoy your meal ;)

The kitchen sequences are especially vivid and appetizing, making it a strong recommendation for webtoon adaptations.

One of my Favorite Stories in 2026!!

From a bewildering soldier to masterchef!!

Obviously, the first reason to watch this show is Park Ji Hoon. After watching his recent hit movie “The King’s Warden”, I was expecting great things from this show, and it didn’t disappoint. The storyline turns a simple cooking challenge into a herculean show of character development. The story is largely based on an underrated Ganglim Base, where the army food is of abysmal quality. While the soldiers are suffering, Private Kang Seong Jae arrives as their messiah. He arrives in a twilight zone, recovering from the shock of losing his father. His superiors label him as a lost cause, until he is pulled into a simulation game- “The Chef’s Path”. The game is exclusive only to the Ganglim base and only visible to Kang Seong Jae. As he completes one challenge after another, his abilities are further enhanced. From being a rookie chef who has never entered the kitchen before, he slowly turns into a magnificent cook.

A grieving young recruit finds his escape through a game-like cooking system that transforms him into an ace military chef.

⏤ ▪︎ Character Weather Report ::
Private First Class Kang Sung Jae carries the weight of his grief the entirety of this drama. He pushes through in a way that allows him to feel his emotions but also to tackle the task in front of him, in the format of a video game. Kanglim Outpost hosts a variety of characters that each ease the sorrow in one way or another and provide a lot of comedic relief. I found myself laughing at most of the over-the-top funny moments.

⏤ ▪︎ Chemistry Check ::
🍚 A comforting bowl of rice.
Plain and simple. It felt like 'let's make something yummy despite the hard day you've had' drama.

⏤ ▪︎ Plot Behavior ::
The plot moved steadily, like it was going through its own mandatory military service. There was space to breath and space to laugh. But when it came to the actual cooking, it didn't reach me fully. It felt like they didn't lean too far in either direction, in terms of the genres. It wasn't too military and it wasn't too foodie either. For that reason, it turns out a bit lukewarm.

⏤ ▪︎ What Worked ::
The gaming style of the drama takes some getting use to, but once you do it really is an enjoyable watch. It was comforting, but also quietly engaging. A drama that has you guessing what they're going to make next and what silliness they are going to get themselves into.

⏤ ▪︎ What Needed More Time ::
I wish the recipes were better, perhaps a bit more appetizing. I know its a military setting, but it is still a drama. I also wish that they didn't treat the only female officer with such disregard, boardering disrespect. It was a bit unbelieveable in the end, when he won the cooking competition.

⏤ ▪︎ Emotional Damage Report ::
Mostly funny, slightly healing, occasionally “oh, that looks good.” This drama didn't generate waterfalls from me, but it was an enjoyable journey in a unique format.

⏤ ▪︎ Final Verdict ::
'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' is a quirky and comforting watch. The RPG-style gaming quests have the feel of an anime rather than a drama, which would be great, but the execution often fell flat. The military comedy and dramatic food cinematography makes this drama very engaging, but the corruption subplot felt a little forced and distracted from the hero's cooking journey in the end. The original premise was definitely intriguing, but they played it a bit safe and overall did not leave a lasting impact.
