Started for the Culture, Stayed for the Chaos — Japan ATE!

Japan took something already amazing and turned it all the way up! 🔥 I started this for the culture (y’all know I love Marry My Husband—check the receipts on my YouTube channel 😌), but I stayed for the content because they are absolutely delivering! I legit cannot wait for the final 4 episodes. What. A. Ride. 😭👏🏾

A Remake that Revinvents and Outperforms the Original

Often remakes immediately suffer from lack of surprise but not so here. The premise is the same as the original and it starts off similarly but quickly it veers off—it is not the same story. Somehow, the changes to the story actually adds more tension, surpise and character development despite the shorter 10 episode format. The FL in particular shines brilliantly capturing the complexity and emotionaly transformation of her character, outperforming Park Min Young in the original. Additionally, her chemistry with the ML is more convincing and satisfying.

Perhaps, the one character from the original that can never be replaced in my heart is the FL’s best friend. Song Ha-Yoon performance of Soo-min was so compelling and delightfully sinister that no one can touch it. That being said, Sei Shiraishi does deserve praise for making the role her own. Her spot-on acting and the additional character development this new version affords her and the other main characters adds to the totally engrossing aura of this drama.

I loved both KR and JP Versions in different ways

Let me start by saying - I _LOVED_ the KR Marry My Husband drama. Loved it. I wasn't even like a huge Park Min Young fan when I started it, but I understood her charm by the end of it. By the end of this drama, I was also COMPLETELY charmed by Fuka Koshiba. I already liked Takeru Sato from other projects he did - I first remember noticing him in Mei-chan's Butler (LOL A THROWBACK IF THERE EVER WAS ONE).

Anyway - I refuse to take part in the discussions about which version is better because it's all a matter of preference. I love them both. And for me, I look at both of them and I just see them as completely different forms of the same story.

The pacing of this drama was wonderful. It was very well-balanced and it's definitely the story from the source but told with very distinct cultural characteristics. I loved the choice of the candy as an indicator (IYKYK), I also liked the parts that they chose to keep in this adaptation of the story. I really like the way Fuka Koshiba played Misa, it made me want to check out her other work. And also THAT FACE. As for Takeru Sato - RAWR thank you Sir.

The second leads were extremely effective - which means that they were EXTREMELY ANNOYING - but I also recognize that that was the point. Sei Shirashi in particular has some scenes where she played her crazy slipping in and out so well that I would actually check out her next projects if I liked the premise enough. And our lovely friends for our leads are just as endearing and lovely as I hoped.

I slightly preferred this rendition over the Korean version

Review:

9.5/10 is my rating.

This rendition was masterfully done. The evil characters, the villains, were truly vile and the hero and heroine were perfect characters to root for. If you like revenge plots, romance, and time travel this is an outstanding addition to the genres. I am not a huge fan of time travel, but I felt like this was time travel done right. I highly recommend it to fans of live versions of Webtoons, fans of romance and anyone that enjoys a good drama. I think it is more than worth the watch even if you have watched the Korean version and/or read the Webtoon. This is different enough to be interesting.

Spoilers

The chemistry between the leads in this version is more intense and it spends a little more time on their relationship which I liked. Conversely it spent a little less time on what it was like leading up to and being married to her ex in the previous timeline. In this Japanese version there are understated glances and quiet intimacy, making every shared moment—whether a tense office encounter or a late-night confession—feel electric yet authentic. It’s less flashy than the Korean version’s idol-driven gloss, but the emotional depth hits harder, especially in Ji-won’s shift from broken to badass. The “evil girl” (the backstabbing friend, likely Jung Soo-min’s counterpart) is next-level vicious here—her schemes are colder, more calculated, with a personal edge tied to Ji-won’s recent romantic history that makes her betrayal sting more. This focus on the friend’s current rivalry, rather than past grudges, keeps the stakes immediate and raw.

The Japanese version also dials back the childhood bullying flashbacks that weighed down the Korean drama, opting for tighter pacing (10-12 episodes vs. Korea’s 16). Instead, it emphasizes Ji-won’s present-day relationships—her messy ex, her workplace allies, and that slow-burn with Ji-hyuk—which gives it a more mature, grounded vibe. The time-loop mechanic feels less gimmicky here, used sparingly to highlight Ji-won’s growth rather than convoluted twists. Negatives? Some side characters (like the quirky coworker squad) get less shine, and the supernatural rules aren’t as fleshed out as in the webtoon

Fav adaptation!

Overall 11/10
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟✨

[Watched in 2025!]
My notes:

LOVED IT!!
This felt much more whole/complete by the end as opposed to the other versions. Which is interesting considering it had the least amount of episodes, but the storytelling was just THAT good! I prefer how nothing was overly dramatic; in some cases that works well, but I prefer the way they portrayed the story in this version. What I loved even more is how the webtoon, Kdrama, and Jdrama all felt completely different but the same! Verdict: Japanese adaptation is my favourite out of all three! I loved how they concluded the fate situation and the possible deaths that kind of hung in the air.

TW// TERMINAL ILLNESS; PHYSICAL VIOLENCE; EMOTIONAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE; SUICIDE ; MURDER; EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIR

More than just your typical revenge drama

I thought this was just your typical revenge drama, but they this was so much more better and special. The acting and chemistry was so much more intense and the relationship between 4 of them had more depth. The antagonists didn't just serve as stepping stones for the main leads to shine, it was more than that. By the end, I could feel the pain and loneliness of the villain too. This was a masterpiece.

A beautiful webtoon adaptation

I watched this for Takeru Satoh. Actually I had tried watching the Korean version but it didn't hold my interest and I dropped it so I wasn't expo much from this. But boy I was wrong. If I could rewatch it for the first time again I'll definitely choose that.

What I liked - where do i start? The acting was phenomenal, the chemistry was electrifying, the villains were so evil you couldn't help hating them. I'm sorry but Reina's past didn't make me sympathetic towards her present actions. She chose to be evil and you can't always blame your past.

What I disliked - I don't know i think the music wasn't very memorable for me.

Overall review - as I said if I could forget everything and rewatch it again I would love to. Also Takeru Satoh as Suzuki Wataru was very hot.

first time to review a drama because I like this more..... hehe!

When I saw there is a Japanese version, I went to check who were the cast and its my fav Japanese actor/actress, I immediately added to my watchlist and didn't regret watching every episode.

FL: I love her in Yuokai Sharehouse. I see different side of her acting in taking up Misa, she embodied her, she "became her". Every emotions, she portrayed it very well. I can see her sadness, her frustrations and her happiness.

ML: I like him in Ruruoni Kenshin. I asked myself how will he portray his character in this genre, and it didn't disappoint me. He acted out his character very well. You can sense his coldness and warmth. His gestures are undeniably authentic.

I hope to see them act out together in other genres, action or comedy maybe.

SFL: Sei portrayed her villainous character perfectly. You can see her jealousy and hate. I love to see her more in movies or drama in another character.

SML: His character is complex and frustrating. Yokoyama, channeled his role in him. Sometimes I question, is his character that stupid?

Overall, I like this version more than the Korean because it centers on the 4 characters, there is no third party especially between Wataru and Misa that cause their relationship to fall off. The side characters also breathed life to their characters, I like the sister Miku, she is like Yoo Huiyeon, very supportive and lovable.

I only wished that they added more part where we can see the main leads' happy relationship and getting married. hehe!

Takeru Satoh is awesome, and so is Sei Shiraishi. The script can go f itself

Bear with me, the last J-drama I watched was Hatsukoi (First Love), and even though it also suffers the same fate as most Japanese dramas of overly very happy ending, and albeit having a very cliche plot (amnesia), the script and characters were more realistic and relatable.

I dont get why other dramas cant get on the same level and suffer with overly genki characters with little concern for realism. Are these the usual conversations Japanese dads tell their daughters (epi1)? Really? Is everyone this genki at work? I know there’s a concept of tatemae but this is over the top and seriously just cringe. There’s a really fine line between tatemae and cringe, and other dramas are able to balance that out. Is this the work of an amateur script writer?

It doesnt help that the main actress here I find that her acting is abysmally poor. This is honestly the first time that I cant stand a main character. It doesnt help her case that the script is so bad. Remind me to check the cast before I watch any J-drama in the future (I’ll be sure to check the script writer too).

The only other thing that saved this drama is the main villain’s character. Her actress also performed really well. However, the lack of backstory honestly felt a bit disappointing, and how she even became a “naturally” evil human being suffered because of that.

I dont know, the first half had me, the latter part just has too many wtf moments.

I need to remind myself to avoid this drama’s script writer and the main actress.

Story Line and Acting

The main female character storyline is annoying, somehow wishing I could grab her from the tv and slap her. The storyline is annoying so as even in her second life, she’s still foolish. I can rewatch the Korean adaptation but honestly not this. The only part she stood up for herself in the whole 4 episodes is when she refused to wash her fiance’s suit.. other than that, Nothing.
I seriously don’t know what the producers/directors were thinking.
