A Cup of Soothing Tea, Shattered All Across the Floor
"It's not that [Chen Wan] is bad with words, it's that his heart is clumsy. But a clumsy heart also means one that is free of ulterior motives." In his earnest, desperate, and stubborn way of loving Zhao Shengge without any desire at all for these feelings to be returned, Chen Wan's authentic feelings come from both a pureness in his straightforward sense of love, but also a devastation in that he is willing to set himself on fire in order to keep Shengge warm. And perhaps that's why I have so many mixed feelings about this adaptation of the novel Reply to Keats 奇洛李维斯回信 by Qingming Guyu 清明谷雨 — a story about the sourness of love in everyday life, of a very grounded, realistic, and yet heartwarming romance — especially when it's depicted through the heavy-handed use of generative AI assets.❁ THE PAIN OF UNFULFILLED DESIRES ❁
If I were to describe Chen Wan and Shengge's relationship in one sentence, it would be "an unrequited love that one never dares to pursue, that represents a devotion born from both extreme selfishness and selflessness." It's a heart-aching work that leaves one with feelings of awe for the all-encompassing forms of love that Shengge and Chen Wan have for each other, but also a bitterness that touches your heart knowing how long of a journey it takes for both of them to find their own happiness. Yes, Chen Wan may be extraordinarily stubborn in his enduring devotion to Shengge, but Shengge is no less steadfast in his loyalty — especially when the one who is always watching from afar doesn't realize that he is now being watched back in return.
The title is a reference to the famous Cantopop song, A Letter From Keanu Reeves by Fiona Sit (2004), which is intended to illustrate the perspective of Chen Wan's feelings. The lyrics focuses on the writing of a love letter to Mr. K — a superstar, but also a metaphor for someone who is indisputably out of one's reach — except the author still writes endlessly, with devotion, and with the greatest love in their hearts knowing how this relationship will never be possible. Like the mundanity and banality of letter-writing, in slowly communicating one's own feelings and waiting for a reply that may or may not return, this story doesn't have many explosive or dramatic moments. In fact, little really happens beyond the kinds of business relationships and interests that Chen Wan and Shengge eventually work on together. But it's precisely because the novel focuses on all of Chen Wan's little gestures, such as his attentiveness towards Shengge's needs, and in return, Shengge's constant awareness of Chen Wan and his attempts to find out what Chen Wan wants from him — that we see two extremely lonely people acquire an understanding and affection for one another over time.
❁ THE PROBLEM OF EXECUTION ❁
As other comments have already mentioned, this is a lower-budget series which received not only little promotion but also struggled when it was announced to release basic information about its actors and production company. The major issue is that this drama is kind of a hybrid live-action/AI series, particularly because of how many art assets, backgrounds, and other scenes are created either with the supplementation of or are entirely generated with AI technologies. This is not exactly a new phenomenon in BL dramaland, as other popular series such as A Prosecutor's Proposal are also starting to use AI content whether in their intro or the post-production process. However, it is to the point in this drama where it is almost difficult to identify when AI isn't used, and most importantly, why AI has to be used in the first place for a contemporary drama which must focus on the romantic development between its main characters in order to succeed.
The makeup, editing, and backgrounds are also extremely strange choices especially when they completely contradict with the novel. Both Yusong and Hanlin actually both look amazing in their livestreams and I can ironically see them perfectly as Shengge and Chen Wan whenever they're doing promotions outside of the drama or dressed in their own casual clothing. So I have no idea why the director decided to go with a very stylized, almost techno-fantastical version of the characters when they had every ability to do without it. Although some other comments suggested the intention of creating a manhua-like atmosphere, the main thing about Shengge and Chen Wan's story is that it's extremely grounded and rooted in the fact that they have a rare kind of love in everyday life. So it seems like this is not only a problem with generative AI use (which is another issue in itself) but the combination of that and an art direction which seems to focus on exaggeration rather than capturing the essence of Chen Wan and Shengge.
Last, although there is a lot of criticism towards Hanlin's (Shengge's) aesthetics, especially the longer hair and overall character demeanour compared to the original novel, I also think this same problem emerges with Yusong's Chen Wan. Although the romanticization and setting of Hong Kong does play an important role in the original story, I suspect what happened is that they decided to try and aim for some kind of Hong Kong triad-esque/old Hong Kong imagery in a contemporary setting, and combine it with manhua-style photography and cinematography, which of course ended up in many ways becoming a messy amalgamation of a bunch of different Douyin-style aesthetics instead. In any case, I think the frustration here comes both from the AI use (and its very obvious camera angles, action/car sequences, etc.) but also the very wonky execution, in which it's as if the drama decided to throw every single trendy aesthetic to see what would stick. Not only does this distract from how the original storyline actually has very few descriptors of things like appearance, aesthetics, and setting (because it prioritizes unfolding the motivations of its characters falling in love instead), but it also just doesn't really make sense in relation to the tone and the intention of the original script.
❁ LIST OF GENERATIVE AI ASSETS ❁
For those who want specifics about the generative AI use, this isn't a comprehensive list and I've probably missed some things, but I'll try. Most of these images/visuals are pretty easy to tell if you've watched both vertical and horizontal short-form Chinese dramas:
(1) Exterior Shots: A lot of scenes where they film big buildings, houses, mansions, intersections that are meant to establish setting (the most obvious example is the exterior of the yacht)
(2) Action Sequences: Anything involving the cars, such as car chases/wrecks/or scenes that capture the cars from afar and at-a-distance. This also includes scenes were we see cars driving on a highway, sometimes when cars are outside a building, and/or the exterior of a car.
(3) Some Table Assets: When they're eating, I suspect that some of the items on the tables (e.g. the moving lazy susan when they're eating the banquet meal) may be generated AI.
(4) Some of the Childhood/Flashback Scenes: Especially the scene where we see Chen Wan as a child
(5) Potentially Some of the Building Details: For example, in the yacht scene the entire sunset background is likely Generative AI, there might be some details in the background (e.g. objects on shelves) that are also either added or edited using AI tools
(6) Newspapers, Phone Texts: Some of these image or art assets that are on screens, phones, or other media forms are entirely AI generated (it kind of looks strange, e.g. when someone's holding an AI newspaper)
The actors are not generated by AI (e.g. there may be some filtering going on, but I think it's more of a stylistic/makeup thing right now because they look perfectly fine in livestreams). Probably the most glaring or obvious sign of AI use is definitely the car scenes and the backgrounds.
❁ LEFT LUKEWARM ❁
Reply to Keats remains one of my all time favourite contemporary BL web novels. The premise itself, of someone having an unrequited love and doing everything they can to make sure the person that guides their affection never discovers their true feelings, is beautifully depicted especially with characters that are so equally competent and well-matched like Chen Wan and Shengge. And while I think Yusong and Hanlin have a lot of chemistry, unfortunately the execution of this drama really marred the original tenderness of the novel. In some ways, this adapation is a reminder that simply throwing generative AI assets into low-budget series, regardless of whether or not they are produced under newer or smaller production teams, does not fare when it comes to the quality and depth of BL series we have been receiving lately.

What Exactly Am I Watching?
I genuinely came across this show and decided to watch it because I thought it was a new “live-action” series. I'm not someone who keeps up with news about upcoming releases, but when I come across something that catches my attention, I'll give it a try. And that's exactly what happened here. But now I'm genuinely wondering: is this a live-action series or an AI experiment? Because I know these are supposed to be real human actors, but the amount of AI usage has me questioning the entire production.
I only gave this show a chance because it looked legitimate. Had I known it relied so heavily on AI, I wouldn't have bothered watching it in the first place. I'm not someone who deliberately watches shows I know I'll dislike just so I can come online and talk badly about them. That's not how I approach watching or reviewing shows, which is why this experience has left me so perplexed.
I've dropped so many shows recently because of their AI usage, and honestly, it's getting ridiculous. It's sad, genuinely. Do the people behind these productions think viewers can't tell? When the directors and production teams sit down to review their work, do they genuinely look at some of these scenes and think, yes, we've done a good job here? Because I really want to understand.
And perhaps part of the problem is that there will always be consumers willing to overlook these things, whether because they don't notice the AI or simply don't mind it. As long as there's an audience willing to consume it, some productions will continue making these choices.
But that doesn't make it any less disappointing.
I watched one episode, and that was enough for me. Gave it a 5 because the actual human actors deserved some credit, I guess? I genuinely don't know, but what exactly was that?

AI overload !!!
I saw this show dropped 4 episodes for the premiere and stopped right after the first episode. I can't stand AI in general but the egregious amount of AI used in just the first EP turned me off so bad to this show that I couldn't even be bothered to pay attention to the story itself or even finish all 4 premiere EPs. I don't know what is it these days that cbls have just flooded their shows with so much ai it's distracting. I've seen plenty of cbls that didn't use AI and they made amazing shows. Will not be tuning into this show at all.Was this review helpful to you?

Have patients, look past the AI and let China give you some yearning and less toxic romance.
I don't watch anything with AI (shorts, series, ads, art, movies and so fort) , I am very specific about this because 1) because supportung one AI video is supporting the many harmful ones used to hurt people around the world 2) there are real people with real jobs that can do the things you are making AI do badly (all this series needed for that one scene was a real balcony and a real child "how hard is that to cast??") 3) I am very hard on actors and this ability to act as well as world building. With alll that said I went into this show blind I expected nothing and hadn't even seen the traiker, by the time I picked up the AI I was already in had 4 episodes and had nothing better to do and this made me sit down and now I can't get up and that is becsur of our male lead Wan wan.
There is something I find fascinating in characters that submit in a selfless yet controlled way that makes you realise it takes nothing for you to be kind and truly give to others without hatred or wanting something in return he reminds me of chanyang from winter sun "different motivations and self worth but that ability to just give fascinates me"
And here Wan Wan and the actor are doing the character justice, you can see the thoughts running in his head, you don't even question why a person would offer their hand as an ash tray because that is who he is and to him it is only natural. Two scenes make me rewatch 1) the scene were he was about to drink the wine and shenge said he wanted to be only and Wan Wan without missing a beat put the glass down and walked away without looking back... THAT scene should eat at a person's heart. 2) the gun scene I played it a few times, I am not sure what is happening with AI and the director but this scene had me in Wan Wan's emotions I felt that fear and heart break with him love at the scene.... Our poor heart.
All in all I want to say as a person who thinks too much about shows I am happy my over thinking and analyzing of the characters made me overlook the AI and watched past episode one and now I am hooked.
Ps: those shoulder pads most be burnt and our second couple is going to be fire one person can read the room before anyone even knows what they are feeling and the other is the right catalyst to get his friends moving. Wan Wan's best friend would get home his man if he just said the word. We would kidnap shengge and deliver him at your door baby.

The slow burn is TOP TIER ?
Nice plot and storyline. Just look past the use of AI. It’s that GOOOD! 🔥 The slow burn is TOP TIER, and the chemistry between the characters is everything! The yearning, the tension, the lingering looks, the little moments, EVERYTHING! The story keeps you hooked, and you’ll find yourself eagerly waiting for the next episode. The way the relationship develops slowly makes every little moment between them feel so special. ❤️🔥 PLEASE GIVE THIS DRAMA A CHANCE!Was this review helpful to you?
This is incredibly good!!!!!! ( ignore the haters)
Saw many bad reviews here from people who might have watched one episode or parts of it. Im glad i decided to ignore them and give it a go. What a wonderful series it is !!The storytelling is solid and there is excellent attention to detail with respect to the original novel. The slowburn romance is so refreshing to watch in this season of toxic stories. Here there is love, longing and genuine buildup of a relationship. There is no toxicity.
The actors are beautiful, people confuse them for ai lol.
Ignore the bad reviews and give it a try. Its so damn good.

First Impression: Echo of the Letter
Overall: glad we are getting more interaction with the leads. Based on a book that I haven't read and I review series on their own merits. 14 episodes about 35 minutes each. Airing on GagaOOLala https://www.gagaoolala.com/en/videos/9501/echo-of-a-letter-2026-e01 and Viki https://www.viki.com/tv/41807c-echo-of-a-letterContent Warnings: suicide mentioned, past child abuse, mental health struggles
What I Liked
- interesting dynamic with one character supporting from the sidelines
- therapy shown and how the therapist called to check in on him
Room For Improvement
- not much interaction with the leads in the first couple of episodes
- AI in several scenes
- the dubbing, I think the actors spoke Mandarin and it was dubbed into Cantonese so mouth movements don't match (someone let me know if I'm wrong on the languages)

AI slop
I think we all can agree on there’s such a thing as too much ai and in this case the ai makes the show completely unwatchable. I got a headache not even a minute in and it gradually got worse throughout the episode, this is horrendous and I dread a day that something like this becomes the standard. We want real people (which this show does have thankfully) real scenery and real music. This is bare minimum and it’s insulting that companies think so little of the consumer that they produce something this bad.Was this review helpful to you?

Despite it's flaws. The drama is really heart fluttering.
I saw a lot of reviews about this being a AI slop. Guys please don't trust them. The drama has real actors although they did use a lot of AI in the ep 1 for the cars, backgrounds, flashbacks and background artists but after ep 1 it has drastically reduced. Now coming to the drama. The drama on it's own is really cute. I loved the plot. I love the characters. I love the actors. Both the leads and the 2nd couple look surreal. Especially the leads they look like gods🤭🤭. Chen Wan especially looks like dunk, the styling, his looks, body language, pretty much everything. As for Sheng.. who can say no to a long haired god🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
Ok that's like the pros now the drama isn't perfect. It has it's fault which I feel in most cases is the production team's laziness like
- use of AI when not necessary like when they show chen wan's house in a wide shot. The 1st shot is AI but when they're leaving u can see that it's a real house so they probably took a picture of a house and prompted it into a video. They do this again in ep 6 for the hotel and a couple of places. They're real places, they could have just rented a drone and shot the clip or something. Car chases are okay as AI cz i get they cost a lot but this just didn't feel right
- the characters entry in ep 1 without an proper intro. It took me a while to figure out who was who and what they did cz I've never read the novel
- they could give us more of the 2nd couple cz i feel they're more like existing in the background but then they show them enough to make us wanna know more but don't give us enough.
- The support characters casting - looks like the team just didn't wanna put any effort into casting except for the 2 main characters, 4 friends, and the girls. Cz in ep 5 we have this while guy who is introduced as sheng's friend and his character also seems to be something that should be young based on the dialogs but bro was old like they didn't find a young white man so they bought a random white man, same for sheng's grandpa they've turned a young man old and it was obvious
- The dubbing... sigh... why??
- Other than this we have Yu Song's acting, bro just has 0 expression throughout the series. Having to rely on the dubbed dialog's emotions to understand things kinda makes it hard to understand things at times which also makes him look like he is AI. But he does have this dreamy eyes that kinda saves him.
Despite all this, I totally think you should watch it. It is good. It was watchable and you will love it. It's just could be made better

If you want to watch it read the novel first.
Do you like the story where ml has crush on mc then mc find out but he won't point rather wait for ml to confess he will keep poking ml until he can't stad it anymore. If you want to watch it read the novel first. It's been long time still i remember story it's was real good. I always wanted to watch live action although I was disappointed because of excess ai but it's bearable i never thought i will get to watch it's live action manhua it still ongoing and i keep feeling that it will stop out in mid
So about story it's slow burn ml always watching mc had unrequited love for him but never crossed line cause he knows if he does he won't ever let go of mc and ofcourse the traumatic past with mental illness it's quite hard to portray in real life
About mc he it's beutiful how he turned the game from ml who had it under control but mc slowly blurred that lines without letting him know till it was impossible to go back.

Chemistry!!!!!!
The chemistry is CHEMISTRYING! 😭 Honestly, the kind of chemistry these characters have is something you rarely come across in BL dramas. And I mean, the characters themselves are so unique. Zhou Sheng Ge is calm, composed, classy, and wise, while Chen Wan is clever, quiet, and observant. There’s something so intriguing about their personalities and the way they interact with each other. The actor who played Zhao sheng ge has done a wonderful job bringing his character to life. What I found most interesting, though, is the way their romance develops. It’s quiet, subtle, and a slow burn, but somehow, every little interaction between them feels meaningful. I can’t quite explain it, but the way the drama portrays their romance and chemistry feels so different from what we usually see in BLs. It’s not always about grand gestures or obvious displays of affection; sometimes, it’s just the way they look at each other, or exist in the same space. And somehow, that’s enough to keep you hooked.
One thing I will say is that some scenes are AI-generated, and honestly, they can be a little off-putting and take you out of the story. But if you can look past those moments, there’s a genuinely great story waiting for you, along with a slow-burn romance that gradually pulls you in.
Overall, I really enjoying this drama. If you’re into BLs, I’d definitely recommend giving it a try, especially if you’re looking for something different from the usual formula. You might find yourself introduced to a whole new kind of BL romance—one that relies on subtlety, emotional connection, and chemistry that speaks louder than words. ❤️

Like a mix of everything that's wrong with A.I. in film
I have not decided whether to drop this series or not, I really want to give the actors a fair shot because their potential is worth it I think. So much digital enhancement though! It has me struggling to watch, from the location shots, to the lack of emotion from the characters, to the unnatural voices. I'm using subtitles in English and although in many Asian series there can be a slight loss to translation, it doesn't usually affect the whole story. This on the other hand is hard to follow, not only from the dialogue & emotions aspect but the scenes/locations go from very rudimentary to quite elaborateMy brain hurts with this one, it's a challenge.
