Yay! Report back!potatocouch:
Sniper Butterfly - Ep 4
- Not her ex crying woe is me cause SHE miscarried (never caring about what she was/is going through, when again, SHE miscarried) and then FL finding out the woman he 'hangs out a lot' with is pregnant... O-O Girl
- Also, can we just take another moment to appreciate her carrying the IV for him <3
- Him crying while smiling cuz he's so overwhelmed with her kindness?? AUUUUGGHH
- Oh, they're milking the jiejie shit to the MAX!!! Finally, a jiejie drama where ML actually calls FL jiejie, I thought I would have to rely only on Fake Love. Now let him say it needily 🔫
- Bro the scene of them having lunch and ML getting really uncomfortable that she's participating in the 'parent' stuff, and she's like "What? Am I not like a parent?" and he goes "no... you're jiejie 🥺"
- Can I just say how cute it was to actually see ML smile genuinely so happily for the first time in the entire drama. Especially in the sea of filthy rich whining spoiled MCs in these cdramas, it's nice to see a ML who is genuinely grateful to be able to study.
- Also boy can SPRINT. Noona sports drama when?! WHEN!?!?!?!
- Aw, his dorm friends are cute- Surprised they all seem chill so far. No clear bully
- The *@*$*#%$#*^#**#%*$#* EX TOOK HER PROMOTION TOO?!??! and then has the AUDACITY to go "what about my MANLY honor?!" Eunuch him.
- I think ML is getting adopted by that extrovert (who would also slay in a jiejie romance tbh. He's adorable)
- Really irrelevant detail, but I was so taken aback to see a waiter- Like in dramas I've only ever seen waitresses even tho it's fairly 50/50 IRL
- These dorms remind me how I would be the world's worst roommate... the way those beds creak with every slight movement?! I would be fighting everyone 😭😭😭
- I will say... the episode ending cuts of this drama or some of the worst I've seen- they'll just end the ep at the most random point, like tf?? No, that does not make me wanna click next ep, that makes me wanna hunt you down, editor.
- Yay.... another forceful kiss.... this is awesomee...... -_- Like it was already side-eye worthy when he was just hugging her, but like... clingy puppycore, okay- then this... ugh. It does NOT help that he's so big so like... tf can she do when he pins her down? Bro's double her size...
Also I made a meme to express how I feel so far about ML:
Not to be a repressed victorian man again, but he has really pretty hands. Like very soft and elegant

This isn't the first time I mention his hands, and I doubt it'll be the last, lol.
I think the biggest downside of this drama so far is the fact that I haven't seen a single sniping butterfly :/ Kinda misleading...
EDIT: 'cause I didn't have much to say
Sniper Butterfly - Ep 5
- His face when he suddenly gets the phone call from her while waiting to get a phone call from her... oh pooookiiiiieeeee
- And bro, how she says "what, you're not coming home this weekend?" THE FOUND FAMILY SPEEDRUN YES
- How bro was sprinting with the upbeat romantic music in the background, grinning like a teenager in love, then goes real SERIOUSED when he sees her. Yes, king, can't let her catch you being a silly lil guy lest she thinks you like her
- His smile when she compliments him... NOT FOR THE WEAK
- No... the puppy face when she tells him to leave on his own.... :(
- Awwwww, he went to find her anyway 🥺
- I really appreciate when they actually work in an actor's absurdly tall height into the script. Like, bro always using himself to shield loved ones from either violence or upsetting moments is just 10/10, and I love it.
- HER FRIEND IS SO PETTY- I LOVE HER- Reporting that the ex parked in the reserved spot, lmafoo
- Lowkey her friend is the audience 😭 Wanting to smite the ex and constantly gushing about how cute ML is "Don't be stingy, let me see" when FL is gatekeeping ML's picture. I'm sobbing and she sets it as the background, too
- Refraining from commenting on the present-day arc until something I like happens xD
That's one thing I love about his character. He's timid, but still tries to protect his loved ones.potatocouch:
Yeeeesssss 🥺 Too precious for this world
SHE DID NOT DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO THAT VILLAGE TO LEAVE ALONE.potatocouch:
SHE👏DID👏NOT👏👏
Of course we're on the same wavelength, and this is something you enjoyed too. 👏 Another trope I love is when the protector becomes the protected. FL was not afraid to handle his uncle. All ML needed to do was stand back and let her take care of it, and she did.potatocouch:
THE PROTECTOR BECOMING THE PROTECTED (and especially staying the protected). YESSSSSS!!!! FL wasn't scared of that crusty uncle for even a SECOND-
On a serious notepotatocouch:
I have no idea, man. I think the communities tend to feel more like close friends/relatives, so it feels awkward and personal to intervene. But I've never met anyone who lives in a small town that seems to actually enjoy living there, tbh
Yes 🥺 Loud noises and sudden movements are jarring for him, which is in line with someone who's dealt with abuse. His characterization is just...*chef's kiss*potatocouch:
YES, THE HELL IT IS!!! I love details like that, and that they aren't scared to let the ML be affected by his abusive upbringing. 👏👏👏
Also, are his legs not tired?potatocouch:
That boy is built different. He probably is very tired and sore but concealing it. Showing it would've been a nice detail, but I'm guessing he's probably used to being physically uncomfortable/in pain so it's not the most far-fetched for him to just ignore it.
I kept thinking how painful it must be to sleep in that position, curled up on that tiny lil couch ToT Those spider legs need room
This little detail nearly broke me. Bro couldn't even bear to dirty a cup.potatocouch:
I KNOW OMG!!! And how assertive FL is when telling him to use a cup instead. I think her stern manner is helping him a lot, 'cause being told what to do and obeying quietly is what he's used to, so it's a good middle-step for her to be stern with him about helping him take his humanity back, and eventually she won't need to do that anymore 'cause bro will have healed <3 Unless he still likes being told what to do, in which case, go off king.
And there's no defense against it.potatocouch:

The drama is really immersive, and you feel like you're going through life with them. That's why I binged it in a couple days, and miss them terribly now.potatocouch:
Immersive dramas my beloved <3
You can tell she does love her daughter. She's just a control freak, which...FL kind of inherited a little bit ngl.potatocouch:
Yeah, it does seem to come from a good place but dang, that phone call was rough T_T as for FL... yeah I kinda see her being a control freak.
Those puppy dog eyes would get him in every time, and I'd be bled dry.potatocouch:
Throw in a lil "jiejie" in there too
I love her apartment though. It's spacious and decorated so adorably. I want to live in it😩potatocouch:
Agreed!!! Modern cdramas always have stunning and memorable apartments! Way better than kdramas *cough* who said that.
It's the way he couldn't look her in the eye during that scene, his soft voice, and the stutter when calling her "jiejie". Ugh. Fantastic, realistic acting.potatocouch:
He is kinda killing it. He's really young and only had like 5 projects before this? That's CRAZY- bro acts better than most idol actors. His timid role is very natural and tasteful with a surprising attention to detail. It doesn't feel like a caricature of shyness like most depictions do, but rather like a genuine shy guy, and I LOVE that!!!
I would've been like, "Aww, does your tummy hurt? 🥺 Come here, and jie will rub it for you..."potatocouch:
LMFAAAOOO GIRL XD
Now I'm just thinking... imagine if FL was flirty...
He really thought she was going to make him sleep on a sofa from then on, and wasn't going to say a word about it.potatocouch:
I KNOOOOOWWWWW- it's SO SAD
I think he's the cutest, shyest ML I've ever seen. I would slay dragons for him.potatocouch:
The kinda man mfs would go to war for. I'm mfs. "Think of instead... a boy worth fighting foorrrrr~"
Shy MLs are CRIMINALLY underrated, omg. And what I especially love about his shyness is that he ISN'T ALOOF- (tho he does seem to turn that way in the present-day, but in the PAST?! CUTE SHY ALL THE WAY THROUGH)
I love this cuz I'm such a sucker for shy men, but couldn't find any dramas where ML was shy for ageeeesss (minus some verticals), and then I watched Moonlit Reunion last month and this one this month. One always either dies of thirst or drowns, huh? Though I'd gladly drown this way
I mean, it kind of is lol. I loved the drama so much, I vividly remember a lot of it. And for the scenes that are a little fuzzy, I've gone back and watched them, so I could discuss them with you <3potatocouch:
Awww, yay!! I'll keep yapping then 👉👈
Can't wait to have more of these discussions. I'm really glad you're enjoying it so far (despite some irritating scenes in the present.potatocouch:
I look forward to our convos too!! It's definitely a very solid drama so far, and the past scenes are absolutely delightful!
but he's always FL's overgrown puppypotatocouch:
That's what I like to hear! Also, this is a full-length cdrama at the end. I've come to expect them to turn egalitarian later on, even if I do secretly hold a humble sliver of hope in my heart that it'll be different every single time.
Hm, I see- Hard to justify SA, but I guess I'll see where this goes.Arclei:
It doesn't justify anything—just gives context. Like I mentioned before, there's a lot about this drama people could call icky. I've seen a couple of people make an argument for the FL grooming the ML. And it easily could've slipped into that, but the writing and characterization give you more to think about.
I'll just watch them faster unless they get interestingArclei:
That's totally fair! I think the past timeline is way more interesting than the present, but toward the middle of the drama it improved and I got sucked into that timeline too. There's so many details from the past to tie in, and it's adorable watching them get close again in the present.
lil bb- and when he says that no one ever asked him about what he liked or disliked... BROOOOArclei:
It's tragic 😭 I'm so glad he has Cen Jin. She literally changed his life.
Tho I do have to wonder what kinda hospital leaves doors open like that for every passersby to hear xDArclei:
C-drama logic strikes again lol.
Oh, you're only on ep 2, HAHAHA- Well, she does have her harass-y moments to the point my mum and a friend dropped it because of thatArclei:
Well, since Forever Love made me feral that wasn't my issue with Begin Again. It was literally how dorky and clunky they made FL when she was coming on to the ML XD I think if they'd made the ML shy or at least made him flustered during some of her attempts, I would've been able to stomach it (maybe they do in later episodes, but I was already feeling intense secondhand embarrassment during the first two, so it was hard to move on). But it's the fact they made him so cool, calm, and collected while making her look goofy. That in itself isn't as RR as I'd like because I feel like dramas always make MLs level-headed while making FLs flounder in some way.
I'd actually forgotten part of the premise was her trying to get pregnant so she could keep her position at her company, so I get her not having much relationship experience. I just wish the screenwriters would've handled her and the ML's personalities differently. But hey, I appreciate what the drama was trying to do, and I'll pick it up again someday, even if I end up fast-forwarding a lot of it.
(according to them they "don't like red flags regardless of gender" then proceeded to watch Love Like the Galaxy twice- mmmmmhmmmm...)Arclei:
At least we're honest about our femdom double standards lol.
I didn't know vertical actors date a lot,Arclei:
Came up on my explore page:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9ftL7ZST7ac
Btw, guess who finally started Hong Luan Yin? 🙋♀️
Only five minutes in, and we already got a steamy kiss with a man's exposed shoulders? I'm shuddering thinking of what this drama has in store if it's beginning like that.
Not her ex crying woe is me cause SHE miscarriedArclei:
He was evil.
Also, can we just take another moment to appreciate her carrying the IV for him <3Arclei:
She's such a protector—except when it comes to herself ❤️🩹
Him crying while smiling cuz he's so overwhelmed with her kindness?? AUUUUGGHHArclei:
Him tearing up during that test call on his new cell was so heart-breaking 😭
Oh, they're milking the jiejie shit to the MAX!!! Finally, a jiejie drama where ML actually calls FL jiejie, I thought I would have to rely only on Fake Love. Now let him say it needily 🔫Arclei:
Isn't it satisfying? He calls her that so freely!
Dude, I've been trying to find Fake Love with the full audio for a while now. It's giving me the Hong Luan Yin treatment.
"What? Am I not like a parent?" and he goes "no... you're jiejie 🥺"Arclei:
I'm so glad the drama makes these distinctions early on so their relationship isn't creepy.
Can I just say how cute it was to actually see ML smile genuinely so happily for the first time in the entire drama.Arclei:
It was a defining moment in his new life 🥹 I loved how care-free he looked as he ran back to his dorm. For the first time in a long time, he's fed, clothed, and cared for.
EX TOOK HER PROMOTION TOO?!??! and then has the AUDACITY to go "what about my MANLY honor?!" Eunuch him.Arclei:
LOL @ "Eunuch him". I agree tho.
Manly honor my big toe. He didn't say no to the perks and benefits he got because of Cen Jin and her family, but now that he's gotten them he wants to distance himself from her, and act like he did it on his own. Typical.
Meanwhile, she's always been smarter and more creative than him, and his ego can't stand that either.
I will say... the episode ending cuts of this drama or some of the worst I've seen- they'll just end the ep at the most random point, like tf?? No, that does not make me wanna click next ep, that makes me wanna hunt you down, editor.Arclei:
I kind of feel that way about all C-dramas. I rarely see endings that feel intentional/planned like I do with Korean dramas.
Yay.... another forceful kiss.... this is awesomee...... -_-Arclei:
- FL forceful kisses ✅
- ML forces kisses: 98% of the time I'm not about them, but ngl that kiss was one of my exceptions. The general desperation, and begging leading up to it was delicious. And despite Li Wu being more confident in the present, he's still the same good person. I personally don't believe Cen Jin was in any danger during that scene like some others I've seen.
Also I made a meme to express how I feel so far about ML:Arclei:
Bahahahahaha! Jekyll/Hyde. Solid meme.
Not to be a repressed victorian man again, but he has really pretty hands. Like very soft and elegantArclei:
I didn't notice them before, but you're right they're very pretty.
I haven't seen a single sniping butterfly :/ Kinda misleading...Arclei:
LOL. It really is an odd title.
And bro, how she says "what, you're not coming home this weekend?" THE FOUND FAMILY SPEEDRUN YESArclei:
I was like YESSSS! We're getting found familyyyy! As if she'd leave him in his empty dorm every weekend.
His smile when she compliments him... NOT FOR THE WEAKArclei:
The big eyes, the smile—he is a one-man weapon.
I really appreciate when they actually work in an actor's absurdly tall height into the script.Arclei:
Me too. Because as the audience, we can't ignore it, so it feels weird when the characters do.
HER FRIEND IS SO PETTY- I LOVE HERArclei:
She's a really good friend! And her relationship's cute too (the actor is the ML from The Other Half of Me and You). I think you'll like it for the most part.
"Don't be stingy, let me see" when FL is gatekeeping ML's picture. I'm sobbing and she sets it as the background, tooArclei:
Yes, she is us and we are her lol.
I like the advice she gives to FL too. It's always thoughtful and supportive.
Refraining from commenting on the present-day arc until something I like happens xDArclei:
LOL.
The focus is on the past for the first 60-70% of the drama anyway.
I have no idea, man. I think the communities tend to feel more like close friends/relatives, so it feels awkward and personal to intervene.Arclei:
I must just be weird then, because I feel like that gives me more license to intervene vs a stranger XD
I always tell my friends and family when they're being mean to others.
And how assertive FL is when telling him to use a cup instead. I think her stern manner is helping him a lot, 'cause being told what to do and obeying quietly is what he's used to, so it's a good middle-step for her to be stern with him about helping him take his humanity back, and eventually she won't need to do that anymore 'cause bro will have healed <3Arclei:
Yes, I love how assertive and stern she is because what he really needs right now is someone to lead him. And he needs to see that you can be an assertive, strong person without being a bully like his uncle. Cen Jin is a great example overall.
Agreed!!! Modern cdramas always have stunning and memorable apartments! Way better than kdramas *cough* who said that.Arclei:

I'm half and half. I've seen a lot of apartments I want in both. With C-dramas sometimes the decor can be a little childish and with K-dramas sometimes they can look too boring/cold. But when both get it right, the apartments are amazing!
That's CRAZY- bro acts better than most idol actors.Arclei:
RIGHT?! He's a natural!
LMFAAAOOO GIRL XDArclei:
This is why it's a good thing that Cen Jin's in that position, not me 😭
Now I'm just thinking... imagine if FL was flirty...Arclei:
If the drama had gone down that route (and I'm glad it didn't) it would've had to be a vertical 🤣 Honestly, I wouldn't mind a trashy vertical ver. of Sniper Butterfly. Other dramas have gotten one.
CUTE SHY ALL THE WAY THROUGH)Arclei:
Us getting that is so rare. They usually give us "tsundere-shy", which I don't like.
I look forward to our convos too!! It's definitely a very solid drama so far, and the past scenes are absolutely delightful!Arclei:
I love how giddy you're getting at the past timeline because that's exactly how I was. I went into the drama with no expectations, so imagine my surprise.
I'm looking forward to your reactions to the rest of the episodes. Esp their first kiss and how they go their separate ways in the past (my heart broke).
I've come to expect them to turn egalitarian later on, even if I do secretly hold a humble sliver of hope in my heart that it'll be different every single time.Arclei:
It's good to hold out hope, but at least you know what to expect lol.
I've seen a couple of people make an argument for the FL grooming the MLpotatocouch:
People whenever there's an age gap of over 3 years. I guess that's why Japan is the one doing the bigger age gaps, lol
I'm definitely not getting groomer vibes. Like you said, they handle it well.
but toward the middle of the drama it improved and I got sucked into that timeline too.potatocouch:
Yeah, I figure it'll probably get leagues better later on. Sounds promising, I'll be awaiting it.
Well, since Forever Love made me feral that wasn't my issue with Begin Againpotatocouch:
Oh, I mostly meant that as in "you have something to look forward to" hahahaha xD Nothing compared to Forever Love lvls tho
intense secondhand embarrassment during the first two, so it was hard to move onpotatocouch:
Valid- I also struggle a lot with secondhand embarrassment, so I get it. I also wished ML was more shy, but he was so mommyboyfriend-coded that I didn't really mind that he was more tsundere.
dramas always make MLs level-headed while making FLs flounder in some way.potatocouch:
This is true, and I hate it.
I just wish the screenwriters would've handled her and the ML's personalities differently. But hey, I appreciate what the drama was trying to dopotatocouch:
I agree. There's a lot about the drama that bothered me, too.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9ftL7ZST7acpotatocouch:
Tells me the video is unavailable
Only five minutes in, and we already got a steamy kiss with a man's exposed shoulders?potatocouch:
EXPOSED SHOULDERS!!
Isn't it satisfying? He calls her that so freely!potatocouch:
I'm thriving tbh
As for Fake Love, now that's a proper bitch of a drama to find. Back when it aired, people were struggling to even find it with the botched audio 💀 I personally watched it on a tab where it was somehow still running despite having been taken down. No idea why certain dramas are such a nightmare to find while others aren't.
I'm so glad the drama makes these distinctions early on so their relationship isn't creepy.potatocouch:
Agreed
I loved how care-free he looked as he ran back to his dorm. For the first time in a long time, he's fed, clothed, and cared for.potatocouch:
I knoooww- it was so well done
He didn't say no to the perks and benefits he got because of Cen Jin and her familypotatocouch:
Yeah, golddigging opportunistic manipulative POS. I bet that's the only reason he married her...
I kind of feel that way about all C-dramas. I rarely see endings that feel intentional/planned like I do with Korean dramas.potatocouch:
I guess to a certain extent, yeah. But it's usually at least in a moment that makes more sense than in this drama- here it feels so random? Like mid sentence they'll roll the credits 😭 Kdramas do have more conclusive episodes (but they're also tediously long, so a trade-off, I guess).
FL forceful kisses ✅potatocouch:
10000% I am unapologetically a FL forceful kiss lover and a ML forceful kiss hater.
The general desperation, and begging leading up to it was deliciouspotatocouch:
Yeah, what led up to it was quite nice, but I wish they would've left it there, lol. (Tho I get why they didn't... the kiss scenes are the ONLY part that was watched multiple times on YT, haha.)
And despite Li Wu being more confident in the present, he's still the same good person.potatocouch:
Maybe this would make sense and I'd take less issue with it if the drama followed a linear narrative rather than the dual timelines, 'cause as of rn... I don't see it. On top of all that, in both instances he's drunk, which make the situation worse 'cause he's not in control of his actions.
LOL. It really is an odd title.potatocouch:
At least it's memorable... in the sea of "Love" and "Blossom" titles.
I must just be weird then, because I feel like that gives me more license to intervene vs a stranger XDpotatocouch:
That would and should be the reasonable conclusion, but for some reason, that's rarely ever the case. From my experience, it's always those closest to you who turn their back and look the other way first. I've only ever seen strangers be horrified and willing to help (to the extent possible, of course). Doesn't make any sense to me.
what he really needs right now is someone to lead him. And he needs to see that you can be an assertive, strong person without being a bully like his uncle.potatocouch:
Yes and yes! Love the details!
With C-dramas sometimes the decor can be a little childish and with K-dramas sometimes they can look too boring/cold.potatocouch:
I agree with both. I admittedly don't watch a lot of kromance, so maybe I have little to compare it to, but most give me ikea-core.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind a trashy vertical ver. of Sniper Butterfly. Other dramas have gotten one.potatocouch:
People say this one is very similar Weeds Are Thriving Unchecked, but the tags don't seem too promising in the 'flirty FL' sense.
Us getting that is so rare. They usually give us "tsundere-shy", which I don't like.potatocouch:
Same. Aloof shy ONLY if he's like a guard dog.
I love how giddy you're getting at the past timeline because that's exactly how I was.potatocouch:
Great minds! I love when you go into a drama not expecting RR, and then it's there. Like a sweet little surprise
Esp their first kiss and how they go their separate ways in the past (my heart broke).potatocouch:
😏😭
That is so real lmao. One of the best thing I’ve ever watched.Lize:
When I finished it last night, I couldn't speak, much less think. I couldn't form coherent sentences. I was so mind-blown. It's definitely one of the best things I've ever watched.
.Arclei:
Proper use of a Nacho Libre meme 👏
But omg, where do I even start with Hong Luan Yin and how much I loved it???
I'll start with the plot:
Hong Luan Yin's plot is proof that a story doesn't have to be revolutionary. As the saying goes: "There's nothing new under the sun." But if a story's execution is good, then it'll feel that way. And that's exactly what happened with Hong Luan Yin. It felt revolutionary because it was a reverse harem handled with care. Yun Qi was given time to explore her relationships with the men, and production didn't let "propriety" (*GASP* an actress kissing four men in a drama? Whatever will we do???? Will she even be able to marry now?!) limit their artistic vision.
The drama seemed to have a decent budget. It couldn't have been too high because the characters only got one or two costumes, but it wasn't low either because the wigs and the sets were good. I wanted to point this out because whatever the budget was, the director (and the rest of the crew) made everything look and feel opulent. Sumptuous, even.
Arclei's beautiful screenshots perfectly illustrate what I mean:

The soft, golden lighting, the rich colors, the ornate brocades and jewelry, the heavy velvet, the curtains fluttering in the breeze. It was visually stimulating, and helped immerse me in Yun Qi's scheming, tense, and sensual world.
Hong Luan Yin is not a short vertical, and yet I was locked in for three and a half hours. In fact, when it ended I wanted more. Which is unusual because I tend to avoid verticals that go over two and a half hours because they start dragging.
Now that I've finished waxing poetic about the plot and production, let's talk about the characters:
Yun Qi (our beloved FL):
Not gonna lie, I was nervous about her portrayal. Logically, it would take a confident, charming, and assertive person to control a harem, but dramas always seem to make female leads in reverse harems endlessly flustered, clueless, boring, and indecisive. The harem of men usually control her more than she controls them, which is why Yun Qi was such a breath of fresh air. She was cunning, charming, assertive, generous, and even funny! Her Chicken Pecking Rice painting will live on in vertical drama infamy. It really cracked me up.
But at the end of the day, I appreciate that she had a firm grasp on her harem (including the maid LOL. They should've put her on the cover too). Yun Qi's allure and control was so absolute, she'd brazenly kiss one man in front of the other, and make two wait outside her carriage while she did stuff with the third inside.
This word gets thrown around a lot, but Yun Qi is genuinely iconic, and I don't know if we'll get another FL like her any time soon.
Yun Jin Chen:

My prince. My baby. My puppy. My kitten. My darling. My peach. My love.
Can you tell he was my favorite love interest? Or was I too subtle?
When I first saw the cover for Hong Luan Yin, my eyes went straight to him. He's wearing plain white and light blue robes. He's not as ornately dressed as the other male leads, but something about his eyes and his posture drew me in. I don't think I'm the only one who sees it either. I texted the cover to a friend, asked her which male lead I'd pick, and she immediately singled out Jin Chen. To be fair, she knows me well, but I was still surprised she guessed it so quickly and accurately. When I asked her why she picked him, she said word for word: "There's something about his gaze. It's soft. And I know you like that."
CLOCKED 😂🙈
Yun Qi's scenes with Jin Chen were the best in my opinion. They were the most emotionally intimate and raw. I don't think I've ever seen a ML use his clothing to wipe the FL's feet as she reclines, smoking a pipe and following his movements with her eyes. It was giving Jesus washing his apostles' feet. A lesson in humility and grace. (And when he kissed her knee later???? Instant butterflies.) Let's not forget Jin Chen warming Yun Qi's bed. Begrudgingly making sure she eats even though he thinks she hates him. My heart was full. And every time she had to nurse him back to health, the tension and the soft touches KILLED me. When she was giving him water/tea mouth-to-mouth, I wanted to transmigrate into the story, and be like, "Go ahead and rest, queen. I'll take over." Because omg it was so tender and hot!!!! They don't have the explosive, fervent kind of passion audiences seem to prefer in drama couples, but they do have passion and chemistry. It's the slow-moving intense kind that oozes through the scene like syrup. I felt it envelope me, and I wanted more.
I also loved the light dom/sub aspect of their dynamic. I...uh...think I almost drooled when Jin Chen put that collar on himself, placed the end of the leash in Yun Qi's open hand while she was sleeping, and let her pull on it when she woke up. It definitely reminded me of Love and Leashes. And when he rested his head on Yun Qi's chest and nuzzled her, then eventually called her "jie"? I almost blacked out.
I love kind, tender, principled male leads, and Jin Chen embodied that. I mean, just look at his eyes in the first pic above. They're so focused and full of emotion.
The only thing that kind of hurt my heart when it came to Yun Qi and Jin Chen's relationship was how rough she was with him sometimes. I usually don't mind that (👀) especially with dom/sub dynamics, but I didn't want it for this adorable, hurt puppy. The rest of his family already treated him badly, so I was hoping he'd get more kindness from Yun Qi. This is something Arclei mentioned, and I totally see it and feel the same way.
Lastly, I realized this isn't the first drama I've seen Yi Hang (aka Jin Chen) in. I watched him in a vertical called "Moonlight in His Eyes" toward the end of last year. I saw a softness in his eyes (not just moonlight hahaha) back then too, so I guess it drew me in again.
Qi Zhuo:
The sexy, disabled, ex-prince/current "male entertainer". He was definitely my second favorite. Not only was he gorgeous and had the best clothes, he had fantastic chemistry with Yun Qi. I like how flustered he got when she first gave him a "leg massage" (👀) and the fact that he admires and respects her intellect, especially when it comes to treating the chronic issue plaguing his leg.
I love him for participating in that jaw-dropping carriage scene toward the end. It was very juicy. Qi Zhuo definitely got one of the steamiest kisses. His background is a bit confusing. I understand he's a lower ranking prince, and when his mom died he was sent to live in the cold palace, no doubt by hateful, paranoid relatives. But I don't really remember who they were. I feel like they should've been shown plotting, so we could connect with his backstory a little more because unless I wasn't paying attention, I don't know how he went from the cold palace to a full blown brothel. I'm looking forward to following that storyline if there's a next season, and seeing more of his outfits and face jewelry. Dude would be the final boss at the Met Gala.
Huo Xiao:
Even though he's ranked third on my list, Huo Xiao was a pleasant surprise! He's handsome, but overly calm and serious MLs aren't my jam. I usually find them boring. But I loved how jealous he was whenever Yun Qi got chummy with other men, and how ready he was to break the rules for her. That's what made me warm up to him.
His kiss with Yun Qi at the beginning was also really steamy. I wasn't expecting that from him.
Xie Lin Yu:
I didn't dislike him as much as I thought I would, but he was still my least favorite male lead because he had the childish, immature hothead thing going on. I appreciated the comedic relief he provided, but his scenes can be shorter next season lol.
With all that said, I'm obsessed with Hong Luan Yin, and I will be watching it many more times and praying for a season 2. Yun Qi is awesome, all the male leads have distinct relationships with her, and I'm interested in seeing where the story goes. Just like other popular verticals, I'd be down for a whole bunch of seasons, and Yun Qi ultimately picking all of the men in the end.
Hong Luan Yin is now the gold standard when it comes to reverse harems, so I hope it inspires more intentional, fleshed out dramas like it.
If you read all of that, thanks for indulging me. When I love something, I can't be succinct.
It felt revolutionary because it was a reverse harem handled with care.potatocouch:
Yeeeessss!!! A reverse harem that actually earns the title of a reverse harem!
The drama seemed to have a decent budget.potatocouch:
Definitely higher than other verticals, but like you said, also very good use of budget from the director and crew. They really made the most of what they had!
The harem of men usually control her more than she controls them, which is why Yun Qi was such a breath of fresh air.potatocouch:
Completely agree!!! This is why I usually avoid reverse harem stories, but I'm glad I gave this one a try because she truly has what it takes to control her men and plays them effortlessly.
Her Chicken Pecking Rice painting will live on in vertical drama infamy. It really cracked me up.potatocouch:
Bro, I was CACKLING. Also... It's a PHOENIX holding a PEARL, omg, I can't believe you'd ever think it was something else... smh
(including the maid LOL. They should've put her on the cover too)potatocouch:
I was thinking the same, thoooo!!! Why did it kinda feel like FL swings both ways, haha.
My prince. My baby. My puppy. My kitten. My darling. My peach. My love.potatocouch:
Can you tell he was my favorite love interest? Or was I too subtle?
The Jinchen simping is REAL- I'm so downbad for him 🤝🤝
But I'm still not sure which one is your favorite. The one you wrote 5 paragraphs about or the one your wrote two sentences about?
When I asked her why she picked him, and said word for word: "There's something about his gaze. It's soft. And I know you like that."potatocouch:
To be seen is to be loved xD
They were the most emotionally intimate and raw.potatocouch:
100000% agree!!!! And it's not just because he was my favorite!
I don't think I've ever seen a ML use his clothing to wipe the FL's feet as she reclines, smoking a pipe and following his movements with her eyes.potatocouch:
That scene was... something else. That was the scene that made me go from "huh, okay- maybe some femdom here and there" to "I NEED to watch this"
Let's not forget Jin Chen warming Yun Qi's bed. Begrudgingly making sure she eats even though he thinks she hates him.potatocouch:
Their dynamic is just so unique. Because they're both in a somewhat similar position in the family. They're both mistreated by the others, constantly fighting for survival, so despite their 'mutual dislike' (if you can even call it that), they're the only ones who can care about and understand the other. It's the "I don't like you, but you still deserve better" sort of love that eventually brings them closer into more open and genuine affection. Idk... I've basically not seen that and I thought it was a very unusual and intimate dynamic to explore.
And every time she had to nurse him back to health, the tension and the soft touches KILLED me.potatocouch:
And when she's applying medicine to his back and lowkey manhandling him and he's seriously worked up??? I am unwell.
It's the slow-moving intense kind that oozes through the scene like syrup. I felt it envelope me, and I wanted more.potatocouch:
My preferred kind! So well done!
I...uh...think I almost drooled when Jin Chen put that collar on himself, placed the end of the leash in Yun Qi's open hand while she was sleeping, and let her pull on it when she woke up.potatocouch:
After being bratty and saying he would NEVER, btw. Augh, yes- the taming was delicious 🔥 That scene was scrumptious! And how she toys with his collar? Adorable
then eventually called her "jie"? I almost blacked out.potatocouch:
Told you the jiejie scenes were good 😌😏
was how rough she was with him sometimes. I usually don't mind that (👀) especially with dom/sub dynamics, but I didn't want it for this adorable, hurt puppy.potatocouch:
I think it's just not the kinda hurt/roughness that's hot... It's the kind that's more humiliating and cruel than rough hot, which is the issue I had. Like, steaminess aside, she's 100% manipulating the fuck out of him. The hot and cold, the coercion, the humiliation, etc. Like, sure, he chose to stay with her regardless, but it does feel a lot like he's being taken advantage of, because really, where else can he go? She leads him on, makes him dependent on her, treats him nicely and cares for him, then switches her attitude, distances herself, and treats him cruelly. It's the hot and cold situation (even in another drama with similar dom/sub dynamics QYBDHQG, it didn't feel as harsh). Now, admittedly, she does this to all the MLs to a certain extent, with maybe the exception of the courtesan prince, but Jinchen is far more disadvantaged and vulnerable than the others (and her treatment of him is still the worst, methinks) so it's harder to watch. Wish she would've been a bit more gentle and respectful with him. But I guess that was just her way of manipulating him. Each guy she manipulated differently which I do appreciate.
Not only was he gorgeous and had the best clothes, he had fantastic chemistry with Yun Qi.potatocouch:
My god, rIGHT?! Their scenes were incredible and his styling? 10/10. I also really appreciated that they didn't go into mdom with him but actually allowed him to be assertive and still flustered and submissive. His needy face was NEXT lvl omg
and the fact that he admires and respects her intellectpotatocouch:
Honestly, yes 100% I think they're the most compatible. I also get the feeling that she liked him the most xD I mean, she definitely spent the most nights with him, that's for sure.
that jaw-dropping carriage scenepotatocouch:
GIRL my JAW WAS ON THE FLOOR- WTFFF and in front of her ex AND her pet at that, too!!! I couldn't believe it. What a legend.
I don't know how he went from the cold palace to a full blown brothel.potatocouch:
I had the same confusion xD I'm speculating that he may have gone there himself to hide from the family, but then the literal crown prince visits him, so... idk anymore 😭 His story was very confusing and tbh, idk why they bothered making him a prince since it played no part in the story.
His face jewelry has me in a chokehold; that shit is majestic.
His kiss with Yun Qi at the beginning was also really steamy. I wasn't expecting that from him.potatocouch:
Right? I also don't tend to care much for MLs like him but he was kinda endearing... Like how down-bad he is for her. Also respect to him for being jealous but not punishing her for it. At least he knows his place. This is HER reverse harem fantasy, you're just one of the men.
I appreciated the comedic relief he provided, but his scenes can be shorter next season lol.potatocouch:
😂
I feel like we basically had the same experience cuz I was also team Didi at #1 and Courtesan as #2 with the ex at #3 and the ex-friend at #4 XD
Yun Qi is awesome, all the male leads have distinct relationships with her, and I'm interested in seeing where the story goespotatocouch:
Agreed! It was a very well-done reverse harem and vertical in general. I'm also hoping for a season 2, but I'm definitely not holding my breath. It would be really based to see the story continue, and like you said, that she eventually officially builds her harem.
If you read all of that, thanks for indulging me. When I love something, I can't be succinct.potatocouch:
I'm really glad you enjoyed it so much!!! 💕 I loved reading through all your elaborate notes! Also glad that the lack of audio didn't dissuade you from checking it out, haha.
I also saw that MDL just added all the other versions of the story, and I skimmed them a bit (*cough* watched the didi's scenes, lol). I still think this one is the best.
dindin:
you have to watch the first 30 seconds! https://youtube.com/shorts/MM4YZiYu30E?si=s5F-EjYLHx4O-zI3
Got me in the first 10 seconds tbh- ML looks stonning. This seems absolutely hilarious and right up my lane! Thank you for the recc!!!! 👏💖 Just when I was looking for a good historical RR mini after my contemp streak xD

Beautiful, feminine ML, my beloved <3
Knew I recognized this actor from somewhere- he was also the chaotic green-tea gremlin in Ni Shi Wo Wei Yi De Xin Dong (he's honestly hilarious). I'm kinda surprised he doesn't have more RR projects when he looks like that. Bu Liang Ren Zhi Hua Kui Wang Ye Fang Si Ai looks promising, though, with the title translating to "The Courtesan Prince's Unbridled Love"- Are we gonna get another courtesan prince like in Hong Luan Yin? 👀
I also went ahead and skimmed this drama a bit, and wow- I mean- wow. Talk about a princess ML. FL also seems like such a gentlewoman and badass 🥺 Gotta hurry up and finish some of the ones I'm already watching so I can binge this 😋
Can I just say that I'm loving the rise of green-tea MLs in these verticals. Hoping it crosses over to minis and full-length dramas, too 🙏
Sniper Butterfly
Ep 6
- Her dad is the goat. omg.
- ML's lil flustered smile when she compliments him, awww
- How tense pookie was during the food conversation. Like he wasn't sure if FL was angry because he was eating or because he wasn't, so he's just kinda staring at her trying to figure it out. And his lil smile when he got her to eat to prove him wrong xD
- My favorite type of tough love "you WILL spend my money and eat good" <33 His sheepish "but I don't need so much" and her telling him to spend it anyway <33
- Ex: "you look beautiful today" FL: "Thanks. I look beautiful every day" You tell him.
- THE EX SHOWED UP AT HER APARTMENT AND WAS TRYING TO GET IN?!?!?
- Hilarious when pieces of shit are told off by a friend of the person they bully, and then go "omg, what did they SAY about me?!" and "nothing, bro, I don't need to be told that you suck" is a hilarious response, and I love it every time.
- Awwww, the guard puppy~ He has the mom-friend override where his anxiety goes away when someone he cares about is in trouble. But once the ex leaves, you can tell how stressed he was :((
- Omg he actually got her bday wrong!!! Wait, that's so refreshing!! In dramas they always manage to figure out the bday from the most random and convenient clues, and it's like this emotional moment, and this time it was emotional in a diff way, and that's adorable.
Ep 7
- His extrovert friend is literally so cute omg-
- How ML was immediately tense when she asked if he had something to tell her... bro the trauma portrayal is so detail-oriented
- NAH BRO he was pushing himself to make it to the top 30 because of an off remark she made?!?! T-T omg bb's fear of disappointing his loved ones is next lvl
- She ruffles his hair... omg... Bro got brother AND child-zoned in the same sentence T_T
- "Can you stop treating me like a child?" he says in the deepest voice possible xD
- Wow, FL bullet journals,
- His family truly is the gift that keeps on giving, huh...
- You can't imagine how I was kicking my feet when she went to pick him up after he said he was leaving himself. Bb knew and wanted her to show up :P
- "You'd better come up with another reason, or I'll be mad." I love her <3
- Wearing platform sneakers to go to a rural mountain area is definitely a bold choice. We love you in your stylish aunt era, FL, but maybe... don't do that next time 😭
- "This task can't be easily learned," and it's just leaf picking, and she learns it in p much instantly.
- Bro, I need that waist basket for cleaning-
- Yooooo it's bro from The Other Half of Me and You!!!
- FL's friend's dress made of pants needs to be burned. What IS THAT
- Oh, ML's an insomniac with migraines, huh- One of US, ONE OF US
- "I don't know what he's rushing against the clock for" why did they have to be so real about that trauma, bro-
- Okay, so the biggest issue I have with him in the present is his alcoholism. He's way more bearable when he's sober.
Ep 8
- FL's friend is relentlesso omg ToT "You've triggered my competitive spirit." bro is cooked.
- ML did not... fall asleep in front of FL's apartment, did he? 💀 bbg what is this stalker-ahh behaviour- bbg have you considered therapy? Also FAKE insomniac!!!!!!
- Help not him lying about a friend borrowing his car so she'll drive him. Such a passenger princess og
- Aw they're matching light blue 🥺
- I find it endlessly amusing (and a bit sad) that ML gets jealous of all the other men FL is close to and they all treat him like a kid 😭 I love it when age gap romances COMMIT to the age gap! So many times there's the "oh but ML went through a lot, so he's more mature"- this ML is the perfect example that trauma =/= acting like a middle-aged man.

- Not him showing up at her parent's house as if he's already the son-in-law 😭😭😭 Okay, I'm starting to warm up to the present-day arc more. I like his cheeky scheming. Not sure what they were doing in those first couple o' eps.
- I really appreciate how she's the one doing the apartment inspections and quality checks while they go apartment hunting for him. I love it when FLs have skills!!!
- BRO DID NOT ORCHESTRATE ALL THIS TO LITERALLY BE NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBOURS WITH HER, OMG WTF- he was made for the harem. I'd also love to know how he managed this....
- The way I cracked up when FL walked out, crossed the hall, and entered her own.
- "He's changed. He knows how to play the victim now," and who's fault is that, hm? Falling for his uwu puppy eyes very single time. (not that I'm any better 💀)
- Not her friend ALSO volunteering her to spend time with bro like her parents did: "but he's new here, he doesn't know the area!!" and then ML, the green-tea that he is: "Is that okay with you? 🥺"
- Bro is renting that apartment for lols I doubt he'll be spending much time in his own bed, tbvh.
- Isn't he coming around a bit too quickly tho? Just the prev ep he was still resentful, and now he's all smiles and apologies? Like... all it took was apartment hunting and shopping? 🤨 this man is too easy
Edit: Oops, accidentally watched two more eps...
Ep 9
- omg girl snitched on theeeemmm. But YES FINALLY SOME DRAMA!!!!
- I love FL ranting to her bestie, and her bestie just siding with ML 😭
- "Wouldn't you be mad?" "I'm not mad. Whatever the handsome guy says, I won't be mad" HER BESITE IS SOMETHING ELSE LMFAO
- Stop, he got so stressed when she left... :( babyyyy. Girl ruined his relationships with his friends and then gives him the cold shoulder 😥
- He waited for her all night... No wonder bro has insomnia when he keeps pulling pointless all-nighters... Or maybe he already has insomnia in the past, and that's why he pulls all-nighters O.o
- Oh my god.... she didn't go to pick him up.... NO MY HEART and then he got sick... :((((
- I love how giddy he gets when he's being taken care of. Babygirl just wants to be pampered.
Ep 10
- Ohhhhhh yessssss protective JIEJIE TO THE RESCUEEE, LETSGOOOO!!!!! Augh, the wrist grab across the entire school and threatening the class to never dare bully him again... And the whole class finding her peak xD I love it
- Wait... is TOHoMaY guy the older brother of ML's friend? He can't possibly be the abusive father...
- NO NOT THE AWKWARD ELEVATOR RIDE O-O
- I love ML utilizing his didi status to the max in front of the doctor. I'm cackling
- Who the fuck makes spontaneous jam at night in someone else's house???
- I can't with bro spying on her from his door- PLSSS 😭
- FL's friend is a menace, omg.... Did she just join bro's camping club??? T_T And then get his friends' benefits in exchange for info about him? I can't with her 😭 She got him peer-presumed into accepting her friend request-
- I just know she tripped him so she could catch him, but sadly, bro learned from TOHoMaY
Sorry for the super long post. I should work on that server when I have the time, haha xD
People whenever there's an age gap of over 3 years.Arclei:
Right? Especially if it's the woman who's older.
I guess that's why Japan is the one doing the bigger age gaps, lolArclei:
Now if only they did them well XD
That's why I had to ask you about Learning to Love before I gave it a shot. Every time I try and give a J-drama a chance, something egregious happens. I tried to watch an age gap one a few years ago, and the younger ML slapped the FL across the face in the first episode. I just sighed and turned it off.

me watching yet another J-drama that turns out to be wildly misogynistic
Oh, I mostly meant that as in "you have something to look forward to" hahahaha xDArclei:
Ahhhh, okay, I misunderstood. I gotchu. I'm still gonna give Begin Again a shot someday :)
Tells me the video is unavailableArclei:
Ugh, stupid Youtube shorts. I'm sorry. All it did was countdown the vertical drama actors and actresses that are dating/married.
Yeah, golddigging opportunistic manipulative POS. I bet that's the only reason he married her..Arclei:
Wouldn't be surprised. He had no empathy, or even love, for her. All he cared about what himself.
Like mid sentence they'll roll the credits 😭Arclei:
LOLLL. You're not wrong.
10000% I am unapologetically a FL forceful kiss lover and a ML forceful kiss hater.Arclei:
Same, I don't feel guilty about the double standard since it's so often done/accepted the other way around.
I just have my exceptions, and Sniper Butterfly happens to be one of the few XD
At least it's memorable... in the sea of "Love" and "Blossom" titles.Arclei:
So true! Or "Peach".
That would and should be the reasonable conclusion, but for some reason, that's rarely ever the case. From my experience, it's always those closest to you who turn their back and look the other way first. I've only ever seen strangers be horrified and willing to help (to the extent possible, of course). Doesn't make any sense to me.Arclei:
From my experience, that's the case as well, and I've never understood it either. It makes me sad.
People say this one is very similar Weeds Are Thriving Unchecked, but the tags don't seem too promising in the 'flirty FL' sense.Arclei:
So I started this because of you, and it's solid so far! The big differences are: FL and ML are step-siblings or something? And the FL is a tsundere at first whereas Cen Jin was always warm. The differences actually make the vertical an even more interesting watch because I don't know where it's gonna go. But you're right about the FL not really being flirty.
