It really did 😅 I think that's common if you read a manga first because you have to adjust to the changes made in the character design to suit the animation medium. I don't think it's bad by any means, but it's missing this twinkle and...warmth the manga had. For example, I think the anime's colors wash the characters out. Especially Ichimura's palette. It's true that his hair is supposed to be white, but I was hoping the anime would keep the warmer palette used for the manga's covers where Ichimura's hair appears more platinum blond than white. It was more flattering against his skin and with his green eyes.
In the anime he kind of just looks like a Gojo clone. I even wondered if that was intentional to summon some of the Jujutsu Kaisen fangirls. (And this critique is coming from someone who does usually like male characters with white hair lol).
Nevertheless, I'm excited to start it. Ichimura does something to all of us. Welcome to the harem hahaha.
I have to confess it’s leaving me a tad disappointed in the emotional department. Personally, I think the 2007 Japanese live-adaptation of the Mongol did a much better job of tugging at the heartstrings and showcasing the bonds between classmates, not to mention the overall comedic vibe of the series.
Oh no! It's a bummer that the anime's not having the same emotional impact. I adored the 2007 Japanese live action adaptation. It was one of my first J-dramas, and made me laugh until I couldn't breathe. Nakatsu stole the show just like he did in the manga.

I'm sorry you're getting headaches D: Sometimes I do too because I'm not sleeping + drinking as much water as I should, so buying a couple of electrolyte drinks to rehydrate quickly really helps. Prime, Liquid IV, or even coconut water are good options. I hope you feel better <3

Laugh-out-loud funny, earnest, cute
For the past couple of days, I've been dropping a lot of vertical dramas. They'd start off good, but couldn't keep their momentum. I thought that was what was going to happen with "My Dragon Girlfriend", but I'm pleasantly surprised! It's a total rip-off of the K-drama The Bride of Habaek, but in a lot of ways more entertaining with likable characters.
The FL's a dragon who's been locked up in an underwater prison for thousands of years. She's set free in an unfortunate accident, but her "soul pearl" (aka the source of powers) goes down a narcissistic CEO's throat (you'll see how 😏). I wasn't super into the premise at first because I thought it'd be the "powerful woman becomes weaker than a kitten" trope, but not quite. FL is still supernaturally strong, and cool. Another thing that took me by surprise was how the drama seemed to get better as I watched. Instead of insta-love, the leads fell for each other gradually, and we got sweet, tender moments between funny and hot RR scenes. The special effects are also surprisingly okay for a vertical drama.

Ah, so it's not just me lowkey being in a slump, haha... I've also slowed down a LOT with my watching. Verticals have just not been it for a few days (and tbh, nothing has, but that's besides the point).
It's a total rip-off of the K-drama The Bride of Habaek, but in a lot of ways more entertaining with likable characters.

I just finished A Happy Life, so y'all don't have to...
If you don't like shallow matriarchies like Romance of Tiger and Rose, you'll HATE this drama. If you DO like shallow matriarchies like RoTaR, you'll probably still be disappointed.
Can't believe I'm saying this... but................. RoTaR did it better.
The dramas are very similar for better and for worse. I think if you want the RoTaR experience but can't be bothered to watch all 24 eps, this drama delivers about the same in like 6 hrs.
The first 5 episodes seemed promising. FL enjoyed being a playgirl, indulging in the things only allowed in a fictional world, and I appreciated this about her. No more FLs TERRIFIED of intimacy as if it were a patriarchy. However, that fades quickly. Like.... really quickly.
The matriarchy itself is a laughable excuse of nonsense that commits to nothing. They just wanted FL to have two husbands, and I love that for her, but that's not a matriarchy. There have literally been women in Chinese history with harems, bruv. And since this isn't gonna be realism anyway, why bother making it a matriarchy at all? Because truthfully, polyandry is really as far as they take it (but early on, FL is said to die due to her 'indulgence', so she quickly settles for only 1 guy and sticks with him throughout the entire drama, so again... why bother?)
The women are still demure, squeaking and blushing disasters (FL is more of the bold and cheeky kind, but she's still weak ASF), and most positions of authority are still held by men (ministers, soldiers, etc). Meanwhile, all the men are strong, cool, and badass, always saving the day. NO ONE acts like it's a matriarchy, with the exception of like maybe 2 supporting characters and a couple of guests.
By the end of the drama, it literally abolished polandry in the matriarchy, which was the ONLY thing it had going for it... 😬 Talk about a drama that felt like it was seriously punishing women for stepping out of the patriarchal norm.
Despite it being a literal fiction video game that they travel into, FL can't do ANYTHING physically, and ML? One shots everyone. Like be so forreal rn... Both are smart and can scheme, but it somehow always feels like ML is the one saving the day, while FL only does sometimes. Like she's not utterly helpless and dumb like other FLs, but she's not the girlboss you'd expect in a matriarchy drama either...
So what was RR? Well, FL marries two husbands, and there are some slight harem-esque politics going on between the husbands (especially early on). This is by FAR the most RR aspect of the drama. ML also used to be a high-ranking courtesan, so there are some brief but very nice scenes in the brothel.

FL's bodyguard feels like the only character that actually exists in a matriarchy, and then one other courtesan WHO WAS DONE SO DIRTY- MY BOY LOOKED SO BEAUTIFUL IN MAKEUP ONLY FOR THIS?!?!?! JAIL!!! I was hoping I would get a fix to fill in the Su Mu-shaped hole in my heart, but I was DECIEVED!!

As for the romance. It was fine for a TRADITIONAL relationship. They dip their toes into RR a little bit here and there, but it's very clear that both want and like traditional relationship dynamics. They were entertaining enough since they're exes that are forced to work together in a transmigration setting, but... not what I was expecting. As for the secondary couple? Traditional SLOP all the way through. HATED them.
Bottom line... Don't watch it for the RR... You WILL be disappointed. If you are, watch the first few episodes and then ep 15 (the brothel ep) and you've seen everything worth seeing.

The two men serving her was already nice (since we didn't get many scenes with more than one man pampering Yun Qi until the very end in Hong Luan Yin), but when she puts the fruit in her mouth, and one of the guys eats it, my jaw dropped. I gotta tell ya, I wasn't expecting that. This just got bumped up on my PTW.

I don't want to talk it up too much and oversell it, but...it made me really sad. I feel like most drama break ups aren't high stakes, or they're shoe-horned in just to stretch the show an extra episode or two. But Cen Jin and Li Wu's breakup was devastating because they really were between a rock and a hard place. Especially Cen Jin being the older one, and understanding that life isn't a fairytale. I even caught myself getting mad at her, but when I put myself in her shoes, I don't know what I could've done differently.
And the phenomenal acting just made everything hit harder.

Nah, something's going on. It's like China's caught on to just how many international vertical fans they have, so now they're cranking them out without a care. I mean, quality's never been the primary goal of verticals, but it feels even worse now. Just four months ago it was easier to find decent dramas.

You see why I don't trust matriarchy dramas AT ALL??? 😭 None of them. It's like they go out of their way to be LESS RR than modern-day dramas set in a regular freaking patriarchy, even though they should be the opposite. All dramas set in a matriarchy should be extreme RR, no ifs, ands, or buts. Yet that's never the case.
This was on my PTW/Buffet watchlist, so let me go ahead and remove it because absolutely not.
