Hey ree! I'm pretty sure Love and Leashes is the only RR movie I've seen, but The Happy Loner might be a good date night watch. It's a 2-episode drama, so it's the length of a movie, and the role reversal aspect is a warm, clingy man x cold, avoidant woman.
I haven't watched it in a while, but I remember it being sweet, and pretty touching.

Wow, I love ML's expression. It doesn't need to be contorted or exaggerated because his eyes are enough to convey longing and yearning. Actors who can convey intense emotion through their eyes are so talented. Clearly, it's not something everyone can do.
FL looks great too, but I wish I saw a little aggression/hint of danger in her eyes like the FL in Shadows of Desire. I won't judge too much because it could just be this particular still. She might be serving that in other scenes.
But yes, the stories/fics I could write about a gentle scholar and his bloodthirsty general wife are endless.
So FL is a spoiled and cruel princess, and ML is a poor, gentle scholar whom she likes to bully. I'm actually reading the book because mutuals said it's very RR and I'm not too far in, but yeah, she definitely likes to bully him... 😋

That scene of them on the boat with the cherry blossom petals fluttering down was beautiful! Really looking forward to seeing the push-and-pull of their relationship, as well as the explosive fireworks, literally and figuratively.
Sadly, the teaser didn't allay my worry about FL's acting. I still didn't see any aggression or cruelty. She's doing the actions, but her face and voice are just giving "pretty" much like the actress in The Princess Decree. I really wish they'd get voice actresses with deeper/grittier/raspier voices to dub for characters like this. It's hard to find them intimidating or scary when they have the same baby voices as FLs in modern-day romcoms.
With that said, I still enjoyed the teaser and added the drama to my PTW. With this many RR scenes, I'm optimistic too. Wish we had a release date. There are so many good RRs in the pipeline, and I'm anxious to enjoy them!

Hey everyone, I also wanted to share my latest RR watch:
I've been bored with vertical shorts lately, and to be honest, this one should've bored me too, but I couldn't look away. I think it's because "I'm Dating an Outcast" is the first RR high school bully drama I've seen. The FL is an actual bully, not a misunderstood good girl, and the ML is a complete dork, not a shy guy who is secretly suave.
The acting is cheesy, and it's shot in two or three locations because the budget is non-existent, but the drama fully committed to the trope, so it ended up being entertaining. Plus it's only about an hour long instead of three hours.
✨Noteworthy Things✨
- FL literally starts bullying ML because she thinks he's cute (cute aggression on another level 😅)
- ML really is cute though. He's super dorky, and the drama doesn't give him the 2000s romcom treatment by taking his glasses off and suddenly making him cool and popular. He starts out a dork and stays a dork for the duration of the drama. (Keep in mind, there's a trippy dream sequence where you think their dynamic is going to switch, but don't worry, it doesn't).
- ML has an adorable giggle
- The dialogue is a bit better than I expected, and has some LOL moments. Some of my favorites are in the screenshots above
- Not many kiss scenes, but the leads' interactions are fun and very RR without them
- Cute, satisfying ending

CLONE WARS MENTION!!!!! It's so good!! I've been itching to rewatch it forever cuz I watched it when I was a child, but I have fond memories!!
There isn't rlly a lot I can say to entice you since it has precious little RR... tho a bunch of couples DO give me RR vibes (ahem, all of them. Leia x Han, Ani x Padme, Obi x Satine, Luke x Mara, hell, EVEN Rey x Kylo).
I vividly remember this one Clone Wars episode where the gang goes undercover as slaves in a slave-planet, and Ani ends up cozying it up with the slave queen (iirc he was a 'trafficker' but still the dynamic was giving RR), and that was a fav episode for me and... I wonder why.... I wonder...

I mean, yes, but it's not just the relationship. Complex political dramas really tickle my fancy (to the point I'm about to start a 70 ep one!), and this one delivered on so much good angst, solid characters, interpersonal relationships, and interesting concepts that I became obsessed. Pair that with a tough as steel but still period-accurate FL, and an absolute angel ML with a complicated but tender asf relationship with some nice RR leaning and well... I've been wrapped around the finger, I fear XD
Spoilers for the first couple of episodes. Mostly the first one ML's the twin brother of the late emperor, who is forced to take the throne and pretend to be his brother (aaaaaangst). She's his brother's wife, who now has to turn a carefree, innocent boy into a cunning emperor (TABOO ROMANCE!!!). She's sooooo cool but in a subtle, barely restrained kinda way. Like she's doing everything in her power to barely hold onto her hinges. She was raised to become empress, so she's messed up. Like, vicious, heartless (not really), and also suicidal, messed up. And he's the human equivalent of a bunny raised in a magical fairy forest. Their worlds are SOOOO different but reversed from what we usually see.
Like, in an ideal world, he would've been the concubine, and she would've been the empress regent in a matriarchy, yknow? I AM a writer and have entertained this AU and might write it sometime, tbh. My first actual fanfic work was for this couple...
Also, he has SUCH didi energy and her jiejie energy, despite them both being the same age.

Maybe you'll watch it and think, meh, he's fine, whatever, but after watching so many historicals where the MLs have the exact same bland asf personality, are perfect at everything, and have a resting-constipation face, I was over the moon to have a ML that is genuinely unapologetically sensitive and emotional, especially compared to his emotionally constipated wife.
Awww...it's an "I can fix her" scenario? I do have a soft spot for those.
The best part is that BOTH couples have this dynamic, it's just that the leads were better all around (secondary couple has a very famous historical figure, which always tends to ruin the fun of what one can do with the character, lol).
But I know... it's SUCH a good trope and criminally underrated!!
I still don't know if I'll be able to build up the mental bandwidth for an angsty historical with so many episodes, but it's not a hell no anymore lol. It's a maybe. I'm gonna add it to The Buffet, and see if I'm in the mood to consume it one day. ML looks really adorable in the screenshots and FL looks tortured and stoic 😏
That's completely valid! It's a difficult watch, and it's quite heavy (and can be scarring), and it might not be worth the watch just for the leads, but if you ever do, I'd be very curious to know your thoughts 👉👈

The Blue Whisper: Part 1 - Cold and cunning spirit guardian taming a feisty merman for an evil woman + also 2 RR secondary couples!! One is a spirit guardian x cat familiar attendant dynamic (literal girlboss x malewife to the extreme), and the last couple have a flirty shameless woman x repressed flustered monk. It was great for the RR, tbh. (Sadly the drama goes into unbearable and tedious mdom in the second part so :/)

The Blossoming Love - The one I'm CW. SUPER RR so far. FL is a shameless flirt, and ML is a repressed monk-type. Not subtle at all corruption arc. She does NOT leave this man alone and he loves it. She literally starts the drama by grabbing him by the neck and forcefully kissing him while he's chained and wounded, AUGH
It's not often that I say "she should do x" and then she literally does. I predicted a lot of her lines and actions, and they were all RR asf, so I'm very giddy about it (even tho the overall drama is ehh)
