Google and Wiki always classify shows as one of the big genres (sci-fi, fantasy, romance...etc.) and I think that's why people get blindsided by stuff like magical realism. I've only found out shows had magical realism by watching them (like you) or reading reviews/film/writing blogs.

Gotchaaaa. It could totally be the Chinese equivalent of English surnames that also get used as given names like "Parker", "Kennedy", "Hudson"...etc. That's super cool. I've never heard "Ao" used either, but I love how it looks and sounds.

Yeah, it's a bummer that subgenres are largely ignored. The genre categorizing of most sites is absolute dogshit. All things considered, MDL is pretty decent about this.... With the exception of them tagging every transmigration story with "fantasy" even if the initial transmigration is the ONLY fantasy aspect 😭

Bu Liang Ren Zhi Hua Kui Wang Ye Fang Si Ai with Chen Yun Ting where he's a COURTESAN finally dropped!!!! This one SMELLED role reversal to me back when it only had the drawn cover photo because the title translated to "The Courtesan Prince's Unbridled Love" AND YES OF COURSE IT'S RR!!!!!

FL doesn't actually show up all that much despite appearing as the FL on MDL, and you can skip pretty much all of her scenes and not miss out on much

Valid, something to binge rq before season 2 airs perhaps :P It was quite the funny and interesting drama. Similar to Joy of Life if you've seen that.
He did really just seem to be forgotten alot...
He is and the plot likes to torture him. Admittedly they do this to a lot of characters but his scenes were the most distasteful. It kinda felt like the plot was punishing him for his softness... :(

Haha, I'm only on ep 16 so I get you! I'm also a mood watcher and I've been trying to keep things fresh with various dramas so I don't get burned out or bored XD This drama is also a bit of a slow-burn.
