Love that your favs are the ones were he's the least diva-esque xDArclei:
That tracks lol.
(& #3 is giving elven prince...)Arclei:
That tracks too. At least I'm consistent.
Sometimes they'll try with outfits but elegance is more than that, yknow.Arclei:
Yeah, it's in the way they speak and carry themselves too.
Su Mu is someone that comes closest to it. He's also my awakening for this because he was so graceful and elegant all the time in a way I just never see men be.Arclei:
YESSS!!! He's elegance personified!
I hate that the character was wasted in a lame dynamic like that.
Liking RR is humbling for this reason.Arclei:
🙂↕️
Glad I was able to clock your type accurately, hehe 😏 Kinda proud of that.Arclei:
Good job hahaha.
You clocking me with Hu Ye Tao 🤝 Me clocking you with Xiao Bo Xian
Hope we can find a good venue for the double wedding.
I'm surprised you say that about Krit. To me he looks quite feminine just not fem enough to like pass for a girl.Arclei:
Yeah, I find his longer face and strong jaw very masculine:

He's good-looking though! (I also like angular jaws lol). I just wouldn't call his actual features feminine. His femininity seems to come through the way he dresses and maybe carries himself?
Google him or search him up on pinterest and you'll be questioning if there's a female celeb with the same name xDArclei:
Girl, I've been having a field day with him on Pinterest.
That's the real horror tbvh... And arguably harder to stomach 😭Arclei:
Amen.
why even bother writing a force of nature like that as the MC and then put that kinda character everywhereArclei:
Right!, like, ok, they can both be talented and powerful and whatever but let them be that in different ways and at different things. Otherwise whats even the point? If every character is the same why even have multiple characters to begin with?! And of course the ML is the strongest, with the most talents and with the same talent as FL but better. Because FL can never beat the man at something that they both do, just sigh.
Not sure if it's because of the fear of backlash or because creators really think having flaws makes a character weak and thus not the strong badass they're going for.Arclei:
I feel like there has to be some good old misogony mixed in there as well, knowingly or not. It´s also just bad writing. A character, of any gender or identity, without any less than positive characteristics is just not compelling and interesting. These perfect characters are never the best ones and tend do be forgettable at best, awful at worst.
but it makes one appreciate dramas that can write a believable, strong womanArclei:
Yes, wich also feels weird at times because like, why are well written female characters so rare that we are always suprised when we see them?!
But when we do see a well written woman they are always the best character.
Otherwise whats even the point? If every character is the same why even have multiple characters to begin with?!newbifantrack:
Something I genuinely don't understand how more creatives don't ask themselves this. It makes things soooooo incredibly boring, if not outright. I guess those characters are just there to make the MC (*ahem* the ML) stand out more by comparison. It feels like cheap wish-fulfillment junk instead of an actual story. Sadly, cdramas are full of this.
And of course the ML is the strongest, with the most talents and with the same talent as FL but better.newbifantrack:
Of course, because what else is there?!! I keep getting more and more angry at this because at least before FLs were allowed to be good at traditional woman things (e.g., cooking, embroidery, etc), so even though it was stereotypical and misogynistic, at least they had skills. Skills that others didn't. But now, MLs are good at that too! How are we worse off than in the past? Like, FLs are deadass starting to be good at literally nothing.
I'm not even exaggerating, btw, FL from Guardians of the Dafeng (not RR) is canonically good at literally nothing. It's actually crazy to think that they cast Tian Xi Wei for a role like that when she's currently doing Pursuit of Jade and previously did Moonlit Reunion 💀 And sure, GotD is more of a dude-flick, I get that, but it's not even just in these type of shows where FLs are done this dirty... they're like this in media for women, too!!!
I'm starting to see FLs whose entire skillset is... eating. A lot. Or not being a complete pos💀 We can't be deadass, rn
And when they do have a skill- SHE WILL ALWAYS BE INFERIOR TO ML- I AM RED WITH RAGEEEE
Is it too much to ask for each character to, idk, and here's a wild idea, to be a character, regardless of gender, with their own skillset that all contribute to the narrative in a meaningful way that justifies them being there? Is that really so much to ask?
A character, of any gender or identity, without any less than positive characteristics is just not compelling and interesting.newbifantrack:
Absolutely right. Flaws are what make them relatable, what make them human. Stripping them of this is horribly detrimental to the story. Not to mention, as you said, flat out insulting and offensive that in order for a character to be good representation of X thing, they need to be flawless.
Nuhuh, I SUPPORT WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND WOMEN'S WRONGS!!!
why are well written female characters so rare that we are always suprised when we see them?!newbifantrack:
Bestie, the scene is so bleak!!!! In our defense, I think we're mostly just surprised for ANY character to be well-written. The quality of writing somehow keeps going down...
But when we do see a well written woman they are always the best character.newbifantrack:
Absofuckinglutely!!!
I hate that the character was wasted in a lame dynamic like that.potatocouch:
I knoooooow. Such a waste, but I'm endlessly thankful that he exists cuz he solidified this for me. (I'll just write the better dynamic sometime)
You clocking me with Hu Ye Tao 🤝 Me clocking you with Xiao Bo Xianpotatocouch:
Hope we can find a good venue for the double wedding.
I'm sure we'll figure something out (this is giving emperor-core upon finding a rare beauty and immediately adding em to the harem, love that for you).
His femininity seems to come through the way he dresses and maybe carries himself?potatocouch:
I mean this definitely, but tja... Not sure what to say about the rest, lmao. You make a good point, but I'm also not sure I agree 100%, but I have no argument rn
Girl, I've been having a field day with him on Pinterest.potatocouch:
😏
It feels like cheap wish-fulfillment junk instead of an actual story. Sadly, cdramas are full of this.Arclei:
Right! It´s like the authors did not get to properly daydream their pre-teen fantasies and now that they have "proper" writing jobs, they shove their half baked "i-would-totally-be-the-cool-badass-godlike-worshiped-MC" daydreams down our throats.
Personally I, thankfully, have not noticed this much outside of cdramas. Like it´s absolutely not just a cdrama thing but in my experiende it´s less prominent in kdramas. But I struggle to find RR kdramas, they are pretty far between.
at least before FLs were allowed to be good at traditional woman things (e.g., cooking, embroidery, etc),Arclei:
It´s like that saying how in real life if a woman cooks it´s to be expected but if a man does it it´s noteworthy and he deserves praise for it and is far more likely to become famous for it.
FLs are deadass starting to be good at literally nothing.Arclei:
We have almost completely reversed back to all FLs being damsels-in-distress, and only that. It´s driving me insane!! Have these writers never spoken to a actual living human woman before?! Like, HELLO!? Even if a person does not have an incredibly rare, superpowered skill or talent, everyone is good at SOMETHING. It could be making fucking powerpoints or whatever, it´s still something!
FL from Guardians of the Dafeng (not RR) is canonically good at literally nothing.Arclei:
I started watching Guardians of the Dafeng and literally the moment FL showed up I just knew. I dropped the show like an episode later but I just had a feeling I would hate her had I kept watching and I just could not deal with a FL like that.
I'm starting to see FLs whose entire skillset is... eating.Arclei:
I like to eat too but it´s not my entire personality and skillset! Does MLs not eat? Do we all not eat? How is it like "women have to be skinny" but at the same time "women have no skills outher than eating" How can a basic human instinct be someones entire skillset?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!!
And when they do have a skill- SHE WILL ALWAYS BE INFERIOR TO MLArclei:
Honey, I AM SO TIRED- I cant even-
Is it too much to ask for each character to, idk, and here's a wild idea, to be a character, regardless of gender, with their own skillset that all contribute to the narrative in a meaningful way that justifies them being there?Arclei:
Apparently it is. Apparently only one character can be compelling, interesting character that contribute to the story and that character obviously the ML who is better than everyone and can do no wrong- SOMEONE PLEASE THEACH THESE WRITERS HOW TO WRITE AN ACTUALY GOOD STORY WITH GOOD CHARACTERS!!!!
Nuhuh, I SUPPORT WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND WOMEN'S WRONGS!!!Arclei:
Give me a well written flawed woman and I´ll show you the best character in the entire show
Bestie, the scene is so bleak!!!! In our defense, I think we're mostly just surprised for ANY character to be well-written. The quality of writing somehow keeps going down...Arclei:
I have genuinely started wondering if any writers care about their characters connecting with an audience. Or is the only thing they care about flashy scenes and pretty faces....
Oops—that was not a good example. The Nevers is a better one. But I share your frustration even though I like magical realism.potatocouch:
Never heard of that one but it does sound intriguing. Google says it's scifi
I also like magical realism, as long as it's that and not cherry-picking realism for the sake of misogyny 😭 I love fantasy so much but for so many people it's more of a crutch than anything else
According to google, Ao is a Chinese surname, so Xue would be her given name. I liked it the best too.potatocouch:
Oh, interesting. I saw it as both a surname and a given name, so thought I'd ask. It's quite a rare surname, don't think I've ever seen it used before. Ao Xue, our pookie
I'd love to write something with her. We can brainstorm in dms if you want ^^
GIMMEEEEEEpotatocouch:
Soon, soon, we'll do the exchange 😈
Usually I'm chasing perfection, and mentally editing as I'm writing, which slows me down :(potatocouch:
Ah, you're that kinda writer.... ooooffff. I kinda trained myself into being a 'write first, edit later' writer with writing sprints back in my server days. It helps a lot because I also suffer from the too-many-ideas syndrome, and also my mind goes like 100mph when I'm locked in, and if I start to edit as I go, I lose all momentum 😭
I call it brain vomit, which makes it sound kinda unserious but intense, which I guess is true. My only issue is that I'm rarely in the editing mood, so I have a LOT of unpolished work everywhere, haha
Does that make sense?potatocouch:
It does. I see what you mean, now. But yeah, I also think that there's the lvl of realism required for every project. Like you said, Bridgerton is mostly historical aesthetics more than anything else. I also take on the approach of historical vibes more than historical realism, because I honestly can't be arsed to do all that research, lol And I don't intend for my work to be a realistic period piece either, so why bother. But I do understand where you're coming from. It's the perfectionism, which is one tough bitch to defeat (I do find that exposure therapy helps, but I'm not gonna sit here and preach, lmao).
That would be such a yummy thing to explore in a fic. Will I ever get to read any of these glorious ideas of yours? 😭potatocouch:
Yes, yes, I promise you will 🙏 Just gimmie a lil bit to polish some things and I'll send u smth
Added to The Buffet >: 3potatocouch:
I wanted to post something about how excited I am but I found nothing to properly signify it so just know that I am excited :D
then feel guilty for getting 4th sister punished.potatocouch:
He's just a sensitive little pookie at the end of the day
I'm particularly tickled by the idea of him visiting her while she's recovering because no matter how cliche it is or how many times it's done, I will always love a caretaking scene. People are usually more vulnerable when they don't feel well, and those doing the caretaking tend to be "softer" with them, so it's the optimal setup for progressing boy cousin and 4th sister's relationship. She needs to be more vulnerable, and he could do with being softer/understanding of her feelings. It totally works!potatocouch:
Yes, EXACTLLYYYYYY. Forcing them to interact like this after all of that exploded in their faces would be a scrumptious tense and honest moment, and I'm so frigging giddy just thinking about it!!! Especially with the man as the caretaker.... yummyummy
Glad you liked my proposition as well.
Ugh, I'm itching to write this scene...potatocouch:
pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls
(Some of my best writing was a scene where a female alpha was taking care of a male omega. I had such a good writing flow, I practically blacked out, came to, and squealed at what I'd written lol).potatocouch:
That sounds RIGHT up my lane!! (These are like my absolute fav omegaverse things to write 😭)
Can I- Can I read it? 👉👈
It´s like the authors did not get to properly daydream their pre-teen fantasies and now that they have "proper" writing jobsnewbifantrack:
omg, you're SO right xD Every author needs a Y/N era or smth like that
Personally I, thankfully, have not noticed this much outside of cdramas. Like it´s absolutely not just a cdrama thing but in my experiende it´s less prominent in kdramas. But I struggle to find RR kdramas, they are pretty far between.newbifantrack:
Same here! Characters in kdramas feel more like people from what I've seen, too (same with jdramas). But agreed on the lack of RR goodness in both those fronts... China is just so far in the lead... It's like with kdramas and jdramas we get something sometimes and it's usually more on the underwhelming side (and.... never historical which is a huge bummer for me).
It´s like that saying how in real life if a woman cooks it´s to be expected but if a man does it it´s noteworthy and he deserves praise for it and is far more likely to become famous for it.newbifantrack:
You completely nailed that 😭
We have almost completely reversed back to all FLs being damsels-in-distress, and only that.newbifantrack:
Yeah!!! Like what happened to the rise of strong FLs??? I feel like I keeping seeing the "let girls be weak and feminine" argument presented a lot and like, are we living in the same world??? "Not every FL needs to be a girlboss" Where are we?!?!
Even if a person does not have an incredibly rare, superpowered skill or talent, everyone is good at SOMETHING. It could be making fucking powerpoints or whatever, it´s still something!newbifantrack:
ABSOLUTELY!!! And it feels like FLs just never get these skill. Their always either "the woman™" or "the love interest" and that's IT. Personality: Woman. I mean, real profound stuff
I started watching Guardians of the Dafeng and literally the moment FL showed up I just knew.newbifantrack:
Yeah, you can tell with how they frame her early on that she's supposed to just be a pretty idiot and NOTHING else. It was extremely distasteful and disappointing. Like she's a princess and yet she has no skills?? How does that even work, bro??? It's weird because the drama does have pretty strong and compelling women otherwise, but idk why they did her character like that... It's based on a webnovel and if watching a donghua with my brother is teaching me anything about dudeflick webnovel adaptations is that they're pretty dang misogynistic. I'm guessing the novel must be way worse and somehow ended up getting a more tasteful version in the adaptation (haven't read any but yknow, the vibes...). GotD is pretty fun past that but some of the comedy things were in very poor taste (FL's character was one of them).
I like to eat too but it´s not my entire personality and skillset! Does MLs not eat? Do we all not eat? How is it like "women have to be skinny" but at the same time "women have no skills outher than eating" How can a basic human instinct be someones entire skillset?! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!!newbifantrack:
THAT'S WHAT I MEAN!!!!! How fucking ridiculous is that?!!?? Most people like to eat, that's not a skill!! Eating a lot and still being skinny is ALSO not a skill!! FFS (not to mention how upsetting and possibly triggering that must be for these super thin actresses to constantly be confronted with food they cannot eat and their entire character being: foodie. Like... O-O)
and that character obviously the ML who is better than everyone and can do no wrong-newbifantrack:
The funniest part is...... that these MLs make watching paint dry seem riveting by comparison. Cuz they seem to forget that no flaws = boring asf and a one-man show is ALSO boring asf 😭
SOMEONE PLEASE THEACH THESE WRITERS HOW TO WRITE AN ACTUALY GOOD STORY WITH GOOD CHARACTERS!!!!newbifantrack:
They need to just google "writing 101" at this point and start from there. But my guess is there's probably a lot of issues with the directors, investors, censors, and probably actors that get in the way of the script, too. Like you know if they cast a certain famous actor as the co-star in a FL-led romance, it WILL end up being more about him... Cuz the actor is a major selling point of the drama. Not to mention all the others.
Give me a well written flawed woman and I´ll show you the best character in the entire shownewbifantrack:
Every single time.
I have genuinely started wondering if any writers care about their characters connecting with an audience. Or is the only thing they care about flashy scenes and pretty faces....newbifantrack:
I know right? This shit is starting be everywhere, not just in cdramas. They cast pretty actors and do vaguely cool shit and then think that'll make their story good somehow... 💀
we get something sometimes and it's usually more on the underwhelming side (and.... never historical which is a huge bummer for me).Arclei:
Yeah. The fact that cdramas are so big on fantasy and historical shows is what drew me to them in the first place. Sometimes it feels like I have to choose between the type of drama i like (historical fantasy wich are usually cdramas) or well written characters (usually kdramas).
I do like kdramas but there is not enough historical fantasy for my taste.
Where are we?!?!Arclei:
Apperantly in different dimensions T-T
Personality: Woman.Arclei:
And because of their seeming lack of knowledge Personality: woman = no personality AT ALL
Like she's a princess and yet she has no skills?? How does that even work, bro???Arclei:
Right! Usually a princess would be the most talented female character, yk on account of her being royalty with access to knowledge and resources.
GotD is pretty fun past thatArclei:
I liked it when I started watching. It was just goofy enough with the transmigration that ML being better than everyone kind of made sense, him having outside knowledge and stuff. But i just could not with the FL. If FL had been different or just not existed I honestly think I might have finished it as horrible as that is..
Most people like to eat, that's not a skill!! Eating a lot and still being skinny is ALSO not a skill!!Arclei:
It´s honeslty so ridiculous and just defies all logic. Also if I hear about someone who eats alot but does not gain weight, my first thought is never "oh wow! thay´re so tallented!" it´s "that´s sounds like an ED"
no flaws = boring asf and a one-man show is ALSO boring asf 😭Arclei:
Well at least we have something to help us sleep,,,,,,silver lining i guess
there's probably a lot of issues with the directors, investors, censors, and probably actors that get in the way of the script, too.Arclei:
Definitely! A lot of them are probably worried about revenue not being as high if the MCs are flawed or have any negative quirks as well as maybe getting in trouble with censorship if there are darker themes and characters.
There are also likely to be some cases where an actor refuses to portray a character that is anything other than "perfect", because of the actors own ego.
Cuz the actor is a major selling point of the drama. Not to mention all the others.Arclei:
I have fallen for this myself. I don´t think I have ever actualy watched a drama becase of a pretty face, but I have absolutely googled a drama after watching a random edit video :§
They cast pretty actors and do vaguely cool shit and then think that'll make their story good somehow... 💀Arclei:
A lot of writers need to realise that a pretty aesthetic can not save a boring story
Sometimes it feels like I have to choose between the type of drama i like (historical fantasy wich are usually cdramas) or well written characters (usually kdramas).newbifantrack:
Yeah, I totally get what you mean.... There are well-written historical cdramas but rarely fantasy and rarely with the pretty actors 😭 I was watching Love in Between back in December (watched about 10 eps), and it was pretty good so far. The plot was quite interesting with compelling leads, good acting, wuxia fantasy, and role reversal 👀 Have you seen it?
And because of their seeming lack of knowledge Personality: woman = no personality AT ALLnewbifantrack:
Yes, important detail
Right! Usually a princess would be the most talented female character, yk on account of her being royalty with access to knowledge and resources.newbifantrack:
Yes!!!! That's what I'm saying!!! But they consistently make princesses to be only spoiled, pampered idiots. ughhhh
But i just could not with the FL. If FL had been different or just not existed I honestly think I might have finished it as horrible as that is..newbifantrack:
No, I completely understand what you mean. There are some things that are just an absolute hell-no for me, too, and an insultingly stupid FL is one of them. I will say in GotD, FL doesn't actually show up all that much despite appearing as the FL on MDL, and you can skip pretty much all of her scenes and not miss out on much (I put most of her scenes faster/skipped them). There's a mildly amusing arc regarding her where ML confuses her for someone else, and there's a misunderstanding where he tries to curry favor with her, which was rather amusing and vaguely plot-relevant, but for the most part, you can skip.
ML was very cute and endearing for the type of ML that he is. I was surprised (I think it's at least 80% the actor tho, same as with JoL)... but my heart lies with his scholar cousin, who was just the most adorable overdramatic malewife- I wish the drama didn't hate him. What I wouldn't give to have him as the ML in a drama....
"oh wow! thay´re so tallented!" it´s "that´s sounds like an ED"newbifantrack:
I mean... yeah.
Definitely!newbifantrack:
Yeah both of these are good points. Actors have an image to maintain, and investors don't want risks... yippie
I don´t think I have ever actualy watched a drama becase of a pretty face, but I have absolutely googled a drama after watching a random edit video :§newbifantrack:
Who hasn't? XD
I've tried but couldn't get myself to watch a drama only because of an actor/ess. It HAS to captivate me in some other way too. That's why there are many actors whom I would like to see on screen, but no project has captivated me enough to watch them 😭
A lot of writers need to realise that a pretty aesthetic can not save a boring storynewbifantrack:
I mean, the dramas still do insanely good, so... 😬 It shouldn't, but I fear it does.
How's Pursuit of Jade going for ya?
We're 5 titles away from 200 titles with the Gender Role Reversal tag!!! Since MDL seems to be getting to my various submissions, I think we should get there very soon
EDIT: We're now 2 titles away from 200 xD
Should we do something to celebrate? I'm thinking of finishing up the bingo cards I was making for the occasion (I'm making one for popular RR titles and one for popular tropes, if you have reccs, feel free to share) ^^ Let me know!
