If every character is the same why even have multiple characters to begin with?! And of course the ML is the strongest, with the most talents and with the same talent as FL but better. Because FL can never beat the man at something that they both do, just sigh.
Not sure if it's because of the fear of backlash or because creators really think having flaws makes a character weak and thus not the strong badass they're going for.
I feel like there has to be some good old misogony mixed in there as well, knowingly or not. It´s also just bad writing. A character, of any gender or identity, without any less than positive characteristics is just not compelling and interesting. These perfect characters are never the best ones and tend do be forgettable at best, awful at worst.

Something I genuinely don't understand how more creatives don't ask themselves this. It makes things soooooo incredibly boring, if not outright. I guess those characters are just there to make the MC (*ahem* the ML) stand out more by comparison. It feels like cheap wish-fulfillment junk instead of an actual story. Sadly, cdramas are full of this.

It's actually crazy to think that they cast Tian Xi Wei for a role like that when she's currently doing Pursuit of Jade and previously did Moonlit Reunion 💀 And sure, GotD is more of a dude-flick, I get that, but it's not even just in these type of shows where FLs are done this dirty... they're like this in media for women, too!!!

Ah, you're that kinda writer.... ooooffff. I kinda trained myself into being a 'write first, edit later' writer with writing sprints back in my server days. It helps a lot because I also suffer from the too-many-ideas syndrome, and also my mind goes like 100mph when I'm locked in, and if I start to edit as I go, I lose all momentum 😭
I call it brain vomit, which makes it sound kinda unserious but intense, which I guess is true. My only issue is that I'm rarely in the editing mood, so I have a LOT of unpolished work everywhere, haha

I also take on the approach of historical vibes more than historical realism, because I honestly can't be arsed to do all that research, lol And I don't intend for my work to be a realistic period piece either, so why bother. But I do understand where you're coming from. It's the perfectionism, which is one tough bitch to defeat (I do find that exposure therapy helps, but I'm not gonna sit here and preach, lmao).

I'm particularly tickled by the idea of him visiting her while she's recovering because no matter how cliche it is or how many times it's done, I will always love a caretaking scene. People are usually more vulnerable when they don't feel well, and those doing the caretaking tend to be "softer" with them, so it's the optimal setup for progressing boy cousin and 4th sister's relationship. She needs to be more vulnerable, and he could do with being softer/understanding of her feelings. It totally works!

Same here! Characters in kdramas feel more like people from what I've seen, too (same with jdramas). But agreed on the lack of RR goodness in both those fronts... China is just so far in the lead... It's like with kdramas and jdramas we get something sometimes and it's usually more on the underwhelming side (and.... never historical which is a huge bummer for me).

GotD is pretty fun past that but some of the comedy things were in very poor taste (FL's character was one of them).

Definitely! A lot of them are probably worried about revenue not being as high if the MCs are flawed or have any negative quirks as well as maybe getting in trouble with censorship if there are darker themes and characters.
There are also likely to be some cases where an actor refuses to portray a character that is anything other than "perfect", because of the actors own ego.

There are well-written historical cdramas but rarely fantasy and rarely with the pretty actors 😭 I was watching Love in Between back in December (watched about 10 eps), and it was pretty good so far. No, I completely understand what you mean. There are some things that are just an absolute hell-no for me, too, and an insultingly stupid FL is one of them. I will say in GotD, FL doesn't actually show up all that much despite appearing as the FL on MDL, and you can skip pretty much all of her scenes and not miss out on much (I put most of her scenes faster/skipped them). There's a mildly amusing arc regarding her where ML confuses her for someone else, and there's a misunderstanding where he tries to curry favor with her, which was rather amusing and vaguely plot-relevant, but for the most part, you can skip.
ML was very cute and endearing for the type of ML that he is. I was surprised (I think it's at least 80% the actor tho, same as with JoL)... but my heart lies with his scholar cousin, who was just the most adorable overdramatic malewife- I wish the drama didn't hate him. What I wouldn't give to have him as the ML in a drama....
