But we need to temper our expectations bestiiiee

Yeahyeahyeah. It's all good. I'm cool. I'm cool.

 Arclei:
It just so happens that I love slow-moving and intimate dynamics more than the explosive kind. My similars attract and established relationship bias is showing

See, this is why you have a lease now.

I rarely meet people that appreciate that kind of chemistry, but there's just something about it that sinks its hooks into my brain. I also love similars attract <3 I feel like I could be into established relationships if written well, but I can't think of any that are 🤔 You probably get to see more of that trope in historical dramas though.

 Arclei:
😭band aid?

Thanks...all better now 🙃

 Arclei:
When was Wattpad's hayday? I used it a lot around mid 2010s era which I feel like was a pretty good time for it? I then came back years later and wow, yeah, not the same site it used to be... But I always thought it was a bit... bully-friendly so *shrugs*

Oh wow, you were an early, early adopter. That's really cool! I imagine it didn't feel like as much of an uphill battle trying to get reads/traction? I joined around 2015, maybe early 2016? It was really fun, and fortunately I didn't run into any bullies 😧 I consider Wattpad's hey day to be any time before 2020, and the internet kind of agrees. It says roughly 2013-2017.

Yeah, most established relationships are kinda.... "they're like roommates now" and there's basically no romantic spark, which is SUCH A MISS. You would think there's more of it in historicals but I've not encountered many...

I joined about the same time as you, lmao. Idk if people got a lot of reads. I got some but my stories were really bad so that doesn't say much 😭💀

Idk I always felt like the wattpad comment section was kinda bully-esque. Like, the constant jokes and poking fun at shit felt like it was clowning on the author for internet points. It's stuff you just don't see on AO3 by comparison. Like, yeah, it's cringy but you're also here reading it, like- leave?

I've been waiting for The Old Woman with the Knife to be available with at least half decent subs since it came out and a good year later I finally was able too watch it!!!!

I had a funny feeling about this movie, like I tend to sometimes have with content that doesn't seem like it'll be RR at all but there's just something about it. But OH BOYYYY was I unprepared

I thought it would be RR in a mentor FL & apprentice ML kinda way... but y'all... Y'ALLL!!!!!!! I was NOT READY!!! You want some actually old woman/younger man vibes? HERE YA GO!!!!! Everything will be in spoilers cuz it was delicious to go into this with wrong expectations on how it would turn out, RR-wise!

Okay so we have FL, a legendary assassin (more in this at the end, because I have THOUGHTS) who is the cold, aloof, lonely pro type. She ends up being rescued by this cutie patootie widower single father caretaker vet with GLASSES who patches her up after a gruesome mission and she threatens him <33 She then proceeds to stalk him, get him in danger by proxy and then fiercely protect him and his daughter all while they have a blossoming love situation??? (never confirmed but since it wasn't mother/son, I'm shipping it!! They cared for each other SO much and all the dialogue really hinted at it being romantic). He TOTALLY brings down her icy walls with his innocent gentle nature and BESTIES I WAS THRIIIVIIIIINNNGGGGG

It's literally the role reversed cliche of the criminal with a golden heart falling for a struggling single mom who was nice to him. PLEASE!!!!! but she's in her 60s!!!! And he is NOTT!!! My guess is there's about a 20 year age-gap between them, omfg???? YES GIRL BAG THAT CUTIE DOCTOR!!!! <333333

The way I was squealing about such a graphic thriller should be studied, 'cause I was NOT okay about this development at AAAALLLL!!!!

Here are some out-of-context GIFs for y'all 😌🙏 teeheehee

The way his head falls onto her hand? The way she hesitates to touch him? THE HESITANT HAND

The ONLY downside is that the movie ends so abruptly that we don't really get an actual conclusion to their story. She ends up continuing in her line of work and he's happy and safe with his daughter but I wish we could've gotten a final emotional reunion/gratitude moment... *sigh* I guess I'll just have to add it to my fic-PTWrite

Here are some GIFS I'll link for those curious but I don't wanna post any spoilers :3 https://postimg.cc/gallery/bdwgRBY

Also, if I had a penny for every Yeon Woo Jin role I saw where he's a hot pookie widower single father in an action flick with a badass female protagonist I'd have two pennies, which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice. Whoever keeps casting him in this, THANK YOU

As for the movie itself... it was okay with some interesting ideas. It was quite suspenseful but also felt very rushed, incomplete, and underdeveloped. Imo, it should've been at least an 8 ep miniseries. Also, I was quite disappointed with how they handled FL's badassery. I love the elder FL take and her being badass at ALL was great, but she gets her ass kicked CONSTANTLY and wins by the skin of her teeth. You would definitely not think she's been a legendary assassin for like 40 years based on how she gets her ass kicked. So keep your expectations within reason.

Also it's pretty graphic. Especially so in the first 1/4, it's pretty dang brutal. Afterwards it's still brutal but more typical-thriller type.

Just want y'all to be aware of and maybe check out the demo for this indi RR/hetgnc Otome game:
Both of Us are Supposed to be Dead

It's a Chinese transmigration story where an unconventional FL transmigrates into the body of a cold and cruel duke who is the emperor's bloodhound. ML is her cute, overworked scribe doomed to die early that's constantly trying to make sure she doesn't get herself killed.

Very much leaning to the masculine woman x feminine man with a nice dose of superior FL x subordinate ML and bold FL x shy ML~

Only the demo is out so it's a brief play but I really loved it and thought maybe some might like it here as well. I was thoroughly hooked, and am looking forward to the off-beat, anti-cliche ride!

Link: https://apricity-studios.itch.io/both-of-us-are-supposed-to-be-dead

FL is the one with red hair, ML is the one with white hair <3 LIKE Y'ALL OMG???

 Arclei:
Yeah, most established relationships are kinda.... "they're like roommates now" and there's basically no romantic spark

Exactly!! Where have you seen some good ones? Please send them my way. Or do you just like the trope in theory?

 Arclei:
I joined about the same time as you, lmao.

I read it too quickly and thought you said 2010 💀

 Arclei:

That's true. I saw that happen in a lot of comment sections, more and more as time went by. Fortunately, when it came to stories I really liked and stuck around for, the fandom and comment sections were pretty respectful. The comment section for my own story is why I managed to finish my first novel. I actually wish AO3's comment section was as active and engaging as Wattpad's (without the shady remarks, of course). That's the only thing I miss. AO3 is superior in every other way.

 Arclei:

Your RR spidey senses were tingling hahahaha.

 Arclei:
I thought it would be RR in a mentor FL & apprentice ML kinda way... but y'all... Y'ALLL!!!!!!! I was NOT READY!!! You want some actually old woman/younger man vibes? HERE YA GO!!!!!

I...I would've never thought this would have RR vibes from reading the summary/examining the MDL page. Some of the most romantic dramas/movies I've seen in my life are Korean, but K-cinema is also good at giving you interesting dynamics, stripping all the tension and romance out of them, and leaving you mired in ambiguity because they wanna feel "arthouse".

I'm happy to see this movie panned out even if the romance was just implied. A female assassin who should have AARP? A gentle single dad who's twenty years her junior and also a doctor? I hope the screenwriter finds a 50000 won bill on the ground. There's countless trad media with this plot and dynamic, so it's about time we got an RR version. I can feel the tension through those screenshots! (And you are so right about Yeon Woo Jin playing hot pookies. I haven't seen the specific work you're referring to, but I did watch a few episodes of Introverted Boss, and he was ADORABLE in it! He just has that face, ya know? So I'm glad the typecasting persists!)

My only potential gripe isn't really a gripe at all. In fact, it's rather selfish and admittedly, not super progressive. Half of me is happy that FL has a head of gray hair and gets to look, well, old while still having a potential something with a younger, attractive man. Too many times the prerequisite for age gap relationships where the woman's older if for her to look younger or be exceedingly beautiful, which is unfair, so it's nice to see the opposite. But the other half of me—the selfish part—sees how hot Lee Hye Young is in real life, and is like DAMN! Why couldn't we have gotten hot, bleached blond granny assassin in the movie?? Are you seeing this:

The visuals would serve!! But again, it's nice to get a realistic representation of women in age gap relationships in media. So, I'm not mad. (Just a tiny bit disappointed at what could've been 😛)

 Arclei:
but she gets her ass kicked CONSTANTLY and wins by the skin of her teeth. You would definitely not think she's been a legendary assassin for like 40 years based on how she gets her ass kicked.

Idk...that sounds pretty realistic. As someone whose knees don't always act the way they're supposed to even though I've been dancing forever (for example), age eventually dulls skill and experience 😭

It sucks that the ending of the movie is botched, but it still sounds worth a watch. Added to The Buffet!

 Arclei:
I could've sworn they moved way later

Can´t remember exactly why they moved, but I think it was because of ML becoming a guardian? Pretty sure they stayed in the same city but a different house,  And cousin was away in the mountains (?) for school and when he came back home to visit they were gone.

 Arclei:
If I have more than 5 dramas on my CW, chances are they're more on-hold than CW

I am afraid this is currentely me T-T

Have a drama i started like 5 months ago when it started airing and still have to episodes left (of 12)

 Arclei:
Lmao, I never heard of ff meaning fanfic xD Over here it means 'fast forward'.

Same word different meanings in different parts of the internet XD

But thank you! Now I know what it means here ^^

 potatocouch:
Exactly!! Where have you seen some good ones? Please send them my way. Or do you just like the trope in theory?

In theory and sadly also in action xD You know me, I'm good with the comf low chemistry shit. I have this list where I keep track of any I've watched and wanna watch: https://kisskh.at/list/1GNd8ol4

As for ones I'd recommend to you.... Hmmmm... maybe
- The Killer Is Also Romantic (Leads are married (egalitarian). I feel like the actress has chemistry with every costar)
- My SO Has Got Depression (Leads are married (egalitarian). Has the slice-of-life kinda feel but it's one of my favs),
- Bloody Heart (Leads are dating (egalitarian for the time period) This one was crazy intense, lovers to enemies to lovers)
- In the 1990s (Leads are married (RR). my pookies, I love them sm)

I feel like they all had decent chemistry, but I'm sure you might think otherwise xD They all focused on the relationship in a way that felt less like 'just roommate besties' and more like 'we're at least TRYING to keep the spark alive', some more than others (MSOHGD is the most chill out of these and BH might be cheating cuz they kinda sorta break up for a bit but not really)

 potatocouch:
Fortunately, when it came to stories I really liked and stuck around for, the fandom and comment sections were pretty respectful. The comment section for my own story is why I managed to finish my first novel.

Yeah, something that seemed to deteriorate over time. Nice that you had such a sweet and active comment section on your stuff, tho! Love that for you

I agree on the AO3 thing... I keep seeing everywhere people begging readers to leave even a single comment at all! It's so bleak... I wish there was some kinda middle-ground where a comment section could be relatively active but not so nasty.

 potatocouch:

I'll take your word for it cuz I have no clue, haha. I do get the feeling that a lot of kmovies are a bit try-hardy, which this one... I feel also falls under it, but I was so excited to find some genuine old woman/young man vibes

 potatocouch:
There's countless trad media with this plot and dynamic, so it's about time we got an RR version. I can feel the tension through those screenshots!

I know right?! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. An okay movie turned highly entertaining because of this alone, lmao. I'm a very simple person sometimes. xD I liked their chemistry even tho I wish we could've gotten more (I keep saying that I wish this were a drama... can you imagine this dynamic unfolding over 8-12 eps? AUGH)

 potatocouch:
(And you are so right about Yeon Woo Jin playing hot pookies. I haven't seen the specific work you're referring to, but I did watch a few episodes of Introverted Boss, and he was ADORABLE in it! He just has that face, ya know? So I'm glad the typecasting persists!)

Omg, I bet he was adorable. Yes, he most DEFINIELY has that face. Innocent, cheek-pinching, you just wanna take a bite (I say this about a man that could prolly be my father). (He plays another tragic single father in Special Delivery  which isn't RR but does have a very badass FL.)

 potatocouch:
oo many times the prerequisite for age gap relationships where the woman's older if for her to look younger or be exceedingly beautiful, which is unfair, so it's nice to see the opposite.

Completely agree!!! I let out the biggest sigh every time I see a comment going "omg, she looks so young for her age" in a noona romance. I wish age gap romances actually let their women look their age- sigh Why are silver foxes only ever men???? HUH???? Like yeah, of course, the actresses are very beautiful and love that for them, but beauty =/= looking young and what's even the point of noona romance is she neither looks older nor acts older???? AND THE DUDES DON'T EVEN CALL HER NOONA/JIEJIE

 potatocouch:
The visuals would serve!!

I would've been good with this too. She looks ridiculously good in that pic, so if she ever wants to take on another age-gap romance where she plays a cool older CEO woman with a pretty young man she keeps as a plaything that thinks he can fix her, I'd definitely be tuning in with no hesitation, lol.

 potatocouch:
Idk...that sounds pretty realistic.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not 😭

Here's my two reasons as to why I think it's ass:
1. If your skill/body deteriorates as a 'top' assassin, you'd just die, lol so her still being active while being in such a state would simply not happen. She would definitely not be out in the field working on such dangerous cases. I don't believe that old = barely functioning, either, which the movie also doesn't and yet....
2. This would not even be in question if it were a man, which is where my biggest issue lies. I watched Remember where the ML is 80 and can kick ass just fine and when not, uses other tactics to his advantage, like, idk, not charging in head first against an opponent that's 3 times his size and 1/4th his age?

But yeah, watch it and let me know, cuz I thought it was actually pathetic and exceptionally disappointing. But I am eager to hear your thoughts about it (especially the RR, lol- I was squealing)

 newbifantrack:

Yeah, I thought that happened way later- dang- I didn't even watch it that long ago xD My poor pookie scholar cousin T_T

 newbifantrack:

Too relatable. I'm so bad with long dramas- I usually pause them for several months 😭 and airing dramas are the bane of my existence... have yet to finish any one I started

 Arclei:
I thought that happened way later- dang- I didn't even watch it that long ago

It could have happened later tbh. After I dropped it I skipped aorund the later episodes, just to see if they seemed interesting enough to not dropp the show, but I think I remember it well enough for it to have been an episode I actually watched.

 Arclei:
I'm so bad with long dramas- I usually pause them for several months

Same! I dont have that many dramas on-hold but easily 90% of them are like 40 episode-shows. And it has been months for all of them T-T

 Arclei:
airing dramas are the bane of my existence

I usually do pretty well with airing dramas as long as they are under twenty episodes and don´t update every day (á la Pursuit of Jade XD)

 newbifantrack:
It could have happened later tbh.

Okay so I checked cuz it was bugging me and they move in ep 23 and his scene happens in ep 25- Oof, still hurts to watch

 newbifantrack:

Respect, I don't think I'd be able to follow a drama that doesn't air daily cuz if I wanna watch THEN I WANNA WATCH!!! XD

Does anyone know if Phantom Lawyer is RR? The synopsis is giving me RR, but the trailer is not at all so I'm conflicted. It seems to have the slight romance tag but idk if that's for the leads but regardless, there could be subtext- anyone watching?

 Arclei:
so I checked

woow I was waaaay of XD

 Arclei:
cuz if I wanna watch THEN I WANNA WATCH!!! XD

Yeah, I do feel that if I´m really into the show, but it also makes me watch the next episode when it comes out and I´m less likely to dropp or pause the show.

But the days in between episodes are torture! XD

Starting Pursuit of Jade....was waiting for all 40 eps to be released. Wish me luck!!

 newbifantrack:

Makes sense. I just lose interest and drop it xD

Good luck indeed! Hope you like it more than me!
