Quantcast
 Arclei:
I heard that AO3 was invaded by non-freaky folks who don't understand nor care for fandom etiquette.

I'm always sad when a bunch of sane/super reserved people invade fandom spaces.

 Arclei:
no one in the comments took note of the dynamic at all, which is crazy because the movie is NOT subtle... 😂

They didn't wanna see it lol.

 Arclei:
I mean, idk, I feel like action flicks are SO detached from any semblance of realism that a grandma/pa kicking butt isn't that much further of a stretch for me.

Depends on the kind of action movie. If I'm watching an action flick like Mission Impossible or Fast & Furious, then yeah, I'm going in expecting ridiculous stuff. But with movies like the Bourne Identity and Atomic Blonde, I'm expecting things to be a little more grounded in realism like the directors intended. It all depends on how much disbelief the movie asks me to suspend, and then if they're consistent with it.

Lemme watch the movie and see! I wouldn't have minded a movie exploring an assassin coming to terms with aging if the realism wasn't only there to further misogyny and ageism. I certainly don't doubt that.

 Arclei:
But I also am of the belief that a huge impact to aging is state of mind (basically the "you are as old as you feel" thing)

I have thoughts about this as someone who has a youthful outlook on life and is in pretty good shape, but still noticed a big physical shift between my twenties and thirties. And it was one I wasn't expecting since I don't feel like people were candid or truthful about it. Just like how I mentioned a lot of people aren't truthful about childbirth either. Of course aging doesn't mean you can no longer do what you love, but there's a happy medium when it comes to how humans look at it that I don't think we're achieving. Anyway, I'll chat with you more about it privately some time.

 Arclei:
She's ADORABLE

She's really cute! She kind of reminds me of a Taiwanese actress named Ariel Lin. Very beautiful screenshots!

I'm dying to see her in a proper RR now because of her acting chops and her height. She would kill it!

 Arclei:
The realist and the optimist

 didichan:
So pursuit of jade is not it then ? I was already feeling like it won’t live up to the hype !

The first couple of episodes were really good, but it wasn't able to keep that momentum :( It's just simply "pretty".

 amdream_weaver:
why can't we get tight plots with great characters, good visuals, interesting supporting cast, awesome actors, mind blowing OSTs and great cinematography and editing???? Am I asking for too much???

These dramas are almost starting to gaslight me into thinking I am. It can't be that hard when I see indie filmmakers and fanfic writers doing better with way less.

 Arclei:
sounds RIGHT up my lane

OMG I dropped this drama in the 1st episode too!! But I am soooooo glad I went back to it a year later!! Yes it has its weak points but seriously I have to say it has served a strong kickass FL TO THE END!!!!

The character is gray, morally corrupt (what do you expect, she's a demon from hell) and stays that way to the end. Even falling in love does not change that and that's what I love about it. We do not need to change who we are at our core just because we fall in love and the ML seems to be okay with her anti-hero persona because he comes to realize that she doesn't fight// kill arbitrarily.  Give it a couple of episodes and see. Gotta hand it to our girl.....she can fight in fancy shoes!!

I am not a big fan of the actress but I loved how much fun she seemed to be having with this role and that added another layer of entertainment for me. Definitely one of the stronger and smarter FLs in Kdrama land. The thriller element does not lose its grip, the resolution of each case is bloody satisfying and the idea of a completely corrupt judge ignited the fire in my heart which was only put out when the judge finally served justice by dispatching them to hell.

 didichan:
but it’s the rapey thing

I think a lot of the dramas, just like corn are made from the male gaze, for the male gaze and in their pea-sized brain depicting sexual assault is the quickest way to branding a man as a villain/ corrupt/  all round disgusting human being, which while it may be true, is so over done on screen that it doesn't even incite the emotions like it needs to unless its disgust with the writing and direction. Male brains being more literal seem to need the visual enforcement of the idea that it happens onscreen. Rolling my eyes.

I think viewers will watch anything at this point... So  why try with a genuine plot... I tried verticals drama to take a break and I'm not strong enough 🤣🤣

Really because it's mostly women watching no? I started trying vertical dramas so I don't seem snubish but they love so many weird drug her stuff so creepy... So I said maybe let me run back to full drama and try pursuit of jade  alas I fear it might bore me to tears 😭

Any good recommendations?

I see… I like the actor playing the villian, but even that is not enough lol… I guess I Will go back to finishing cdrama beloved🔥

Fair enough, let's talk about it some time later then.

Agreed, we need her in an RR drama already

That is very promising indeed! A cruel FL that is actually allowed to remain cruel to the end but isn't just villainized sure sounds refreshing. Glad to see Korea doing more RR 🙏

Also good to hear the case resolutions were satisfying and bloody. Kdramas tend to be fairly preachy about... most things tbh but in the case of thrillers about righteousness and following THE law and whatever and even a lot of revenge-focused ones fall extremely short for me, so them being bloody is defs a bonus

Love Beyond the Grave  is set to air on the 28th and seems very promising in the RR-department. For those who like xianxias, might be something to look forward to...
According to what I've seen, the novel is quite heavy on the role reversal and the trailer also seems to be going in that direction. FL is a powerful demon and ML is her mortal boytoy lover. FL even sits on the throne!!! The world is healing!!

Dilraba defs has a track record of RR roles and I've been hoping Arthur would do an RR cuz he just gives me big puppy vibes

Trailer: Twitter/X

For those who care... Here's are some novel excerpts I found on tumblr:

That's the truth. I've been watching verticals too because I can't get into any long-form dramas except "You Are My Lover Friend".

 Arclei:
Love Beyond the Grave

I keep seeing this drama around, and saw that it sounded very RR from the summary. I was gonna ask if you planned to watch it, but you beat me to it lol. If you do, lemme know how it is.

Doubt I'll be watching it while it airs unless I suddenly get really tempted... my record for watching airing dramas this year has been atrocious and I'm not too keen on watching another 20 episodes of a mid drama hoping it'll get better. At least if it finished airing I can read reviews, lol

I'll let xianxia-crazed intern watch it first and let me know.

Delegating is the way 😌

I'd be interested to know what he thinks.

Any good ventricule dramas that you have seen recently... I tried watching one with two sister but one of the sisters was in high school.… and they paired her with some older guy.. I checked out mentally 🤣

I'll let you know what he thinks when he watches it 😌

Did you end up continuing with The Blossoming Love btw? I believe you had started it around the same time as Glory iirc, but you never mentioned it again

 didichan:

Yeah, I've been seeing a lot actually! What're you in the mood for? They're all egalitarian/RR to varying degrees with decent budgets.

  • Make You Mine (General's Daughter FL x Monkish Prince ML. I can't shut up about this vertical. It was soooo cute! And heavy on the RR, but the subs aren't that great)
  • Xun Ye (Jiejie romance—gets trad toward the end, but the first 60-70% is extremely worth it)
  • Qian Jin Mou aka A Calculated Fortune (Sly Merchant FL x Emperor ML)
  • Love on the Sly (Corporate FL x ML. Rivals to Lovers)
  • My Dragon Girlfriend (Mythical dragon FL x CEO ML)
  • My Sugar Boy: A Billionaire?! (Jiejie romance)

Lemme know which ones you want to watch and I'll DM you the links. I usually don't watch them on YouTube unless forced.

That's because I got sidetracked by Glory 😂 I do plan to get back to it though. I enjoyed what I'd seen so far.
