Mmm, yes, he was. What I apreciate very much is how absolutely alive are both of main leads, no one is accessory to the other. Ryo might be down, it is very character shaping, it is very integral, but if you don't look at him and take only Zen's perspective, how brave he is, what jumps he does, how grounded he is about what he is doing. How the conscious relization of his feelins is so grand yet so unsignificant in comparison to their relationship as a whole and his character as a whole. He does not only mirror, he just has his unique, subtle way of realizing what was simmering since probably the very first moment of them together, he just might have realized it less or was much more suppresing it. Or most likely - it went through different way for him than for Ryo. In Ryo's case - it is through admiration about Zen's ambitions and hard working-ness, while Zen unconsciously find in his rival a corner where to finally rest calmly. A friendship. Something to caught his interest in the rare moments he does not try to achieve something. Mmmm. It is indeed a good story. :)
