This kdrama is meant for a certain kind of audience. A lot of screen time is taken by food, so that cuts the plot, and there is lots of "interesting looking" happenings so it cuts scenes on the psychology of the characters.
The ML is shown as someone very immature and rash, hooked up with a nasty villain official consort, doing terrible things to people in his country to revenge his mom, a mama boy equipped to kill, essentially. and oriented towards killing and maiming others, but also sensitive to care and responsive to it, and he is hilariously put into weak-for-him situations where we can hilariously make fun of him. But there are also situations where she has to kiss his as# to prevent him from killing, and situations where he abuses her, and in ep 4 he essentially rapes her bc she is in his chambers giving him food and she HAS TO STAY as he grabs her or else she will be dead. She already liked him so it is not a 100% disaster but ... the fact is, she had NO opportunity to give consent or refuse. If she said sorry not tonight, I need more time, what do you feel about me, what is our future, do you use condoms, what is your STD situation, etc - heck no chance.
So this drama is for those who dont mind that kind of stuff. And it is not terrible so you can forgive it and have fun with other things, like the comedy of the FL, who is truly hilarious.
it is all made fun and games but ....
It is fun and kinda goes around the serial killer ML by showing everything through comedy, via the hilarious comments and actions of the 21st century FL. So the overall feeling is LIGHT FLUFFY AND FUNNY with severe violence lurking underneath
So you can watch this drama to enjoy the eye candy of ML or the twists of the plot, or the cooking lessons,
most importantly, in this drama the FL is the comedy star, she is HILARIOUS, her thinking and actions are HILARIOUS. It is her acting that drives the show as a comedy and essentially a rom com, rather than a historical drama of violent times. She is a lot better than Mr. Queen
I really hope we get to see some intimate scenes between the leads because for now its giving siblings
Dont use american standards for romance. There is a very super strong romance going on for 25 years already.... They love each other. If you miss all the cues, you lose. There is nothing "siblings" between them. They are a romantic couple. I think so many people from the West mistake sex for romance. They are different things. Also, mistake that romance MUST show sex. No we do not need to see it. I trust the lovers are competent :)
Oh! I’ve never heard of it but if it was available to me I’d watch it!
Actually it is, I found it. Go to kisskh . la /Drama/Wonderful-Nightmare/Episode-1 and I watched it. It is fun but they are even better in current drama My Troublesome Star
Definitely Yoona is a great actress, and her choices recently are great, we already know she have not a few haters, love…
Imo Park Sung Hoon looks and style are worse for the role bc he has a very delicate face and more delicate body and a demeanor that is more suave slimey, he is the villain from The GLory. He is great for urban dramas and fashion divas and such.... ... The current ML has slanted eyebrows and slanted eyes and high cheekbones and is a rowdy youngster with a good sense of humor, lots of energy, having FUN so he is PERFECT for this role and the scary scenes where he is filmed from looking up and the hilarious scenes where he made fun of and has to beg for mercy. Also, for all the physical scenes, riding horses, sitting on the throne half naked, etc, he is just better, more of a "soldier" physical type and also - has that sense of rowdy humor. He just fits better for the role, imo . And yeah he is doing a good job and he is clearly having fun with this role. Yoona is holding the drama in total comedy with her hilarious comments and thinking from 21st century and ML adds to that. They are a great pair.
Is the king a cruel sadist thats all i want to know
imo yes, somewhat - like at the end of cooking competition, he INSISTS to uphold the rules and chop off arms of those who lots. It takes like 10 mins of drama time and everyone begging him for him to quit.. and he drops zillion times how he would have killed her but stopped bc of her cooking
SO it is not as bad as in The King and the Clown but it is bad enough
Has anyone seen this trailer: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JdTom2g4kZI
Ah anything is possible.... I think living in Joseon is a lot more dangerous ... and he is not really needed if he is a tyrant... so he can "retire" and move to the future with her, why not???
From the comments, it seems like many of us have returned to the kdrama world thanks to this show. These days,…
This is definitely a cliche drama, a cruel guy who opens his heart with the help of a woman. But this one is twisty, the guy shows care early on and she is totally independent and competent and confident
YoonA gives off total support-role vibes, while her friend Yoon Seo Ah actually looks lead-worthy. Honestly, if…
Ah this is more subtle... Yoona is the COMEDY POWER behind this drama. Her 21st century manerism and thinking is what makes it so funny
And in terms of looks, she is fine for the ML. He looks older in all those heavy clothes and behaviors. Until you mentioned it, I had absolutely not even noticed anything. They are a good pair
Let me remind people again, all the cooking scenes in this drama are done by YoonA! No stand-in actor even with…
Yoona's contribution is COMEDY, her precise 21st century imitation of speech and thinking and relating, is absolutely HILARIOUS , it is SHE who gives the entire drama the comical light feel Luckily ML bounces off her humor so the drama is light
Otherwise it would be he the serial killer shedding blood most of the time. HER comedy makes even him shown from the comical side of things
So many kdramas and kshows focusing on food these days, specially from last year onwards.. ..is There some kind…
because it creates easy episode time... so no need to create script /story for it..... Easy peasy... Also, it brings sponsor money too... and... americans LOVE to eat so this is a good way to introduce kdramas to them
I'm usually not fond of this trope but Kim Sam Soon is a classic! For those who started watching K-dramas in the…
FL from The Witches Romance is currently airing as FL in My Troublesome Star. She was FL in movie WOnderful Nightmare. The ML from there is also ML in My Troublesome Star and it is an amazing absolutely beautiful and hot older actor, now with extremely impressive acting skillZ. Highly recommended
This role is more makjang, very theatrical, and very dramatic, does not require holding a conversation or scenes…
This drama has dramatic overstated acting and imo is in essence makkang drama. CHAOS acting :) And bc it is historical drama, thre are many moments where he acts stuff and wooden, and he speaks not in normal language but in this formal speech that sounds almost like yelling
In other words, less text to remember, less emotions to act, less subtleties to act, and less time on screen Bc the food and cooking takes a considerable time on the screen, it is a "lead actor" that gets more screen time than ML and FL, so the human actors have less to act...
In this drama, he is a pretentious jerk / control freak and so his entries are very dramatic and he has to look " impressive" - then he dips into being a softie - so he swings in a huge range of expressions, but nothing is deep and held for too long.... he might like acting that better. After all the actor has to have fun.
This drama caught my attention with filming - the scenes and camera angles are amazing and make it so fun. I noticed that the actors do not get too much of camera time, so you see face for a second or so.
In a more psychological drama, e.g. Crushology 101, the actors get a LOT of closeup time on the screen in one shot, the camera stays on them - for example, 2 people talking for a while... so the actor has to be able to hold their role for several minutes and shine in it. That;s a lot harder than a minute in this drama where he throws dishes out and tries to kill someone LOL
THe Bon Apetit drama is more based on jazzy scenes and very dramatic short entries. HOWEVER, then it is 100000% crucial to do those short scenes with extreme intensity and precision, and not be too subtle but show the "gig" precisely and clearly, to almost overdo it, for example, rolling your eyes, or whatever - it is exaggarated. This drama also requires fantastic COMEDIAN skillZ, in very visible ways. This drama also requires a great swing from being a cruel serial killer to being someone crying for his mother or caring for FL. The contrasts are soooo huge. And he has to act every extreme extremely :) it is so dramatic. So this is a role in theater, maybe, where you are so far from audience so you exaggerate your acting
Also in this drama he has costuming to his advantage, he is half naked in his bedroom quite often, so he can show off more. Then what he is wearing is also more flashy and makes you look at him, and he is good looking. Also, this drama is more dramatic, in ep 4 he essentially raped FL, she had to come there and stay there and not get up and run, like it or not...
Disclaimer: I have NEVER studied film but this is what I see as a lay person.
This role is more makjang, very theatrical, and very dramatic, does not require holding a conversation or scenes…
The young one is good, but the older one is 10 star quality imo. That was the first thing that caught my eye. The very start of ep 4 is WOW acting and he is so charming and so beautiful he has EYES
Well, tbh, that scene didn't clear anything up for me because I don't believe that's the real reason he rejected…
He looked for jobs and found zillion jobs, and I am sure he would get a job, his title was ... department chief? something like that - and he said he doesnt want just that. But yeah, he did not reject EH bc she is poor. There is some heavy story there that we need to learn. Unless he is just delusionally pushing her out of his mind...
