I REALLY hate the "give up all power and retire to the countryside trope" but the one thing the writers have done is ensure that the leads won't make any other choice.

Depends. If you're cool with the leads being absolutely miserable for half the series than okay. And I'm not exaggerating. Some people like that kind of thing. Some don't.

There are no "wins" here...and you still got to get through a prison and fake death plot. Ep. 35 he is till going trough it. It's just more torture until they retire to the countryside to grow vegetables.

There's too much to spoint directly but basically from ep. 18 onward it's nothing but pain and misery for the leads at the hands of the villains with a brief moment of happiness for the leads with their wedding.
Last thought: Why do people think the leads consistently getting their asses kicked b/c they are written to be stupid is realistic? lol
It's not realistic to have the villains have all the answers, all the time, magically at the right moment.
A more realistic play would have the leads win some. The villains win some. The leads lose some. The villains lose some. It would be a chess match. Not torture porn. That also makes for better storytelling and actually raises the stakes since you don't know what's going to happen next.
Some of ya'll just like to watch characters suffer and call it "realistic".

Royal Betrothal's ending didn't annoy me this much.
