Definitely too short. I’m going to write my second half review and one of my big complaints is giving the leads such a short amount of time together in the finale. I wax watching the time the entire time the Yus talked on screen. Tje actors who play the Yus did an amazing job but it was time for Zhao Ling and Tingyun.

Things I loved: Cinematography, ost, and acting was great. I loved the journey aspect of this show, literally and figuratively. I think that’s what made the first half great. There was an actual physical journey from Tingyun’s hometown to Ganlin. That goes well with the inner journey our leads go through. That physical journey is lost as they become stationary in the capital. I think that causes stagnation in the story a bit. The only real problem I had with the first 18 episodes surrounds the handling of the confessions. Burning those letters still bothers me because getting those four confessions was a huge driving force in the early episodes. And then they were burned and forgotten. They played no further role in the story. The only other want and not really a problem is that I wish they had married earlier before the five years. I think it would have made the separation even harder and increased the stakes once transitioning to capital, especially if they had already had their daughter. Overall, one of the best starts in any Cdrama. Loved it.
Finished 32-36 Really enjoyed it. Overall rating 9/10.
Overall I enjoyed the series. Episodes 1-18 were near perfect, while episodes 19-32 were a bit rocky and left me with a lot of wants. Episodes 1-4: Tingyun’s fall from grace in Huaying. Rate: 9.0 Episodes 5-10: On the road and salt plot in Yongning. Rate 9.5 Episodes 10-18: Ganlin story. Rate 9.5 Episodes 19-36: Capitol plot. Rate 8.5 I think overall as a whole I will give it a 9.0. I really enjoyed it. I honestly wish there were a few more episodes to see what these characters do with the rest of their lives. It is about the journey after all.
I am actually enjoying this story up to 31, although I will ding this show for not giving the leads more romance after the wedding. They should have devoted two or three episodes to giving them a normal, loving marriage after 5 years of separation. It would have also allowed the story to breath and give a calm before the storm. That’s a nice way to get the characters, and the audience, to drop their guard before hitting them with trauma. Thus increasing the impact of said trauma. So they missed an opportunity there. As far as butchering final episodes, that has happened a lot this year and last year. I think the problem is cutting back the number of episodes. Producers and directors end up having to make sharp cuts. I suspect it’s easier to make cuts on the back end than front. The beginning of the story is when you’re introducing characters and world building. It’s more difficult to cut there. On the back end you can cut back character arcs and trim down plot points all together. I miss when they allowed series to go as long as needed to tell the story.
It's really really good but as of ep 23 I am bored. I think it's because of me ,not the drama. If I take too much…
I do agree that the episodes are way too short to be once a day. At a little over 30 minutes these Cdrama are better to binge. I can forgive Kdramas for being once or twice a week because most of them are a little over an hour per episode. But if you have the patience to wait till a Cdrama ends to binge, I think it’s for the best.
Aww, but he was merciful and left Mo's family alone. Ugh.
He did make them commoners. Although, you still get to keep all of your stuff so I guess it just matters at parties. Technically Tingyun has been a commoner since the Fus turned their backs on her.
Whew. Where's my 'I sat through Episode 31 without pausing 500 times to sigh or cry or throw up' badge? What a…
Yeah. The emperor pissed me off. General Mo was one of his long time supporters when he was crown prince. I would be wary of anyone who is willing to do that to a long time ally. The emperor isn’t risking anything. He’s letting his supporters take all the fire. The pitfalls and corruption of rising to power or coveting power is definitely a theme of this story. Madam Mo was really stupid to accept an obvious bribe. “When one rises, another falls.” To rub salt in the would, Zhao Ling and Tingyun got promotions out of such an awful act. I take that as the emperor driving an even bigger wedge between the Zhaos and the NW faction.
Why only single episode is coming everyday you know where in which platform where as in mydramalist it is showing…
They will release the remaining episodes tomorrow with express. I hate when they do that. The episodes are really just 36 minutes long when you factor in the opening/ending credits and teaser. So it’s messed up that you have to pay extra or watch one episode a day.
Poor Zhao Ling he gets blamed for literally everything. He didnt even want to be part of any of this.. but got…
He’s a grown man who ultimately made decisions on his own. He didn’t have to listen to anyone and could have remained a smuggler for the rest of his life. He didn’t have to what he did with those heads and then follow General Wang for five years. He didn’t have to do what he did to Lu Da and Mr Fu. He doesn’t have to keep Tingyun in the dark about so many things as well. This is causing her to become alienated from him, increasing her time at tea parties. Ultimately we can’t blame others for the choices we make in our own lives.
Comments making it feel that another drama where they messing up near the end? I really hope it ends well.
I’m up to ep. 31 and I’m still enjoying the drama. It hasn’t dropped off in quality like Prusuit of Jade so I’m happy. I will give a final review after I watch the last five episodes. But everyone has different expectations of what they want or wanted to see. That colors the good and bad of it. Ultimately people have to decide for themselves and not worry about what others think.
I REALLY hate the "give up all power and retire to the countryside trope" but the one thing the writers…
Why do you keep saying grow vegetables like they were doing that when they were there last. ZL would likely take General Wang’s place defending the border. What’s wrong with living in the country? Better than being around a bunch of nobles who blow with the wind.
