I kinda wish she didn’t share that info with Madam Yu. Lead her on to think there was a chance for an alliance and then hit them from behind. By openly telling her she’s aware of Jingxiu’s involvement and wouldn’t let him off, she put Madam Yu on the offensive. And they attacked immediately. I know it felt good to wipe that smile off of Yu’s face but I didn’t think that was a very good strategic move by Tingyun.

PoJ was excellent for the first 15 episodes in the small town. It started gradually decking after that but was still good up until about episode 20. After that it just fell off the rails. I think it’s still worth the watch because the first half was so good.

It’s not just difficult, it’s impossible at this point. The emperor gave him a year to resolve this crisis. And his head will be on the block if it all fails. I don’t think Tingyun was planning on things going this far. She was openly self serving as she told Zhao she needed a man for what she was going to do. She convinced him to lock arms with the crown prince so that she could clear her name and make it back to the capital.

He’s a coward trying to hold out till his government pension. Sending the hat in the box was funny though.

You never know if you’re getting a misdirection with teasers since we have no context. It might be her family suggesting some type of alliance through marriage. It doesn’t make much sense though. He hasn’t married Tingyun and they don’t have a child. It’s not going to happen but let’s say it did. If she were to have a child first it would be a disaster for Tingyun. So this is likely taken out of context.

You know, one the realizations that came to me only recently after watching episode 19 is that Yake and Tingyun were teenagers at the start of this series. I don’t know why that never dawned on me. But it’s common for older actors to play teens in Cdramas. Based on Yake’s account of Tingyun’s current age and the age she got married we can figure that she was 16/17 and Tingyun was 18/19 at the start of the series. Her behavior now makes more sense. She was gullible and impulsive. Her father’s writings didn’t mean as much to her as material things. Her childish jealousy of Tingyun starts to make sense. It also answers my question of how could someone turn on their childhood friend like that. Well, she was still a child. They had not had a mature friendship. I still don’t excuse her actions, but I think knowing that she was an immature young girl allows you to understand her profile better.

Not sure about your time frame. They had only been together for about a month before Hong to Ganlin. Once there about 6 to 9 months went by before he had to go off to war. After that we get the five year skip. Still enough time to get married but not 1 to 2 years.

Tingyun dodged a bullet with that family. Maybe she needs to thank Yake and Jingxiu for inadvertently saving her.

Depends on if it made it past censors.

Thoughts on ep. 20. Definitely getting into the meat of things. I’m starting to feel uneasy about the emperor now. It’s like he’s setting Zhao up to take the fall if all of this blows up. And he needs to marry Tingyun fast. First time I felt he was out of his depth dealing with these nobles. Tingyun has a better understanding of how these snakes operate. Lastly, Yake going after Tian Wan Yi was dumb. She’s way out of her league.

I thought the new girl was there to be the concubine for Jingxiu and mess up Yake’s life. Why is she interfering with Zhao and Tingyun’s relationship?

I’m fine with that. I enjoy the fact that he’s a commoner without some lofty past.

I also think a problem that has occurred as a whole is series being cut short. I feel that a story should go as long as needed to tell the story. A lot of shows are forced into a 36 episode limit. If that’s enough to tell the story without filler or rushing then fine. But if the story can be told in less or needs more then that should be allowed. With a lot of shows it feels like they have to rush the ending because they are running out of episodes. That hurts the story. If you need 70+ episodes like Yanxi Palace then so be it. I just hate the forced limits unless you are planning on multiple seasons then it’s fine.

A 5 year skip will do that. Glad they hired an adult actor instead of trying to make the little kid look older. Now it’s time for Zhao and Tingyun to find him a wife.
