The problem is not that the drama has nudity or sex scenes. The thing is that they made them so random, unnecessary…
maybe we should stop using the word necessary wrt this stuff. i think that's what ppl don't like. but idfk bc that's an english word. these convos always become reductive bc ppl fling ~purity~ around but then other ppl will call you a sex addict or whatever for like. enjoying what you see or not minding. and it never fucking ends.

work is exploitation in general—that varies with social capital but ykwim—and particularly these industries particularly for women and particularly (say it again) in sk. it does suck that it is imbalanced and shows a glaring issue that compensation can't cover as remedial. that is literally sexism lol. not surprising but annoying i'll give people that!

Same thing. I don't like her either. I started the drama for the leading lady. But I was disappointed.
not what you expected?

I only saw episode 1 (waiting for it to finish before I decide if it's worth 8 hours of watching lol), but I rather…
if the sex is distinct to denote the control he has over these women and her herself then why would the sex and the acts during it not matter? and, if there is a romance, the gulf of what she's allowed to do, what he is, and the negative nature of the situation and her and these women's station. these imbalances (that seems like way too light of a word to use) shown through sex. i would agree about shot choice but don't the acts themselves matter as well? merging the (sociopolitical) truth of the act with the arousal that people feel can be difficult—particularly done by a certain demographic—but that seems more minor here. like where is the appropriate cutoff for it to be a legitimate choice for you?

ultimately what's the issue if they are unnecessary? like is the show bad to you? because if it is that's ok but i'm genuinely curious. also i don't view this as smut lol otherwise i wouldnt waste my time. if it's basically the 365 days film then correct me if im wrong lmao.

if this drama is actually good people are missing out on something that they could enjoy and that could make them think lol. no one is explaining what they're uncomfortable with they're just. uncomfortable. lol. to me what's worse is watching a fucking ROMANCE kdrama that is sexless and the kisses so dead that make me want to turn it off but yea ok this is the problem.

some of these comments....i don't even watch it yet! it's just so sad to see??? and to turn people off before…
i once got into an argument with someone over the handmaiden's sex scenes (director's cut) because i believe a lot of the sex was prolonged, what people would deem "unnecessary", and that person got up in arms.

yet what i meant with that is that:
1. i personally found it sexy as a bisexual though
2. only up to a point where i noticed that
3. PCW (director) is still a (presumably cishet) man who views women and same sex desire through his lens

he is progressive but the director’s cut was so long because of the exhaustingly long sex scenes. to me it diminished the effect and sensuality of these scenes as part of the story. it was not feminist no matter the pains he went through to make these scenes safe for these women. admirable but again. not free.

UNFORTUNATELY i do not think this is what people are saying in these comment sections and i honestly just don't get it lol.

you need to bask in that discomfort that is shown to you. it's SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable as well as maybe sexy*. a monarchy, rule, authority, no self-determination for you and your community? is violent. sex is a part of that violence and control as relationships and sex are the biggest ways we relate to one another interpersonally. monarchies should not exist, people should not be controlled by and indebted to these people, we should be masters of our own fates. yet we aren't. doesn’t it make you question their choices and yours? how we view life, and sex, and how we have been made to believe what we do according to rules we do not set? it’s alluring in its monstrosity.

ask yourself why you're uncomfortable with it yet why you're comfortable with constant love stories bookended by inhuman kisses. by only men having sexual lives while we are told that they have no inner life that thinks about sex the way women (/queer people to an extent) do. by the same cheap intimacy but clothed and unreal. feel that shit within your bones! if you find it sexy that’s ok! if you hate it that’s ok too but to hate it by its mere existence without any deep reason besides un-investigated discomfort…. that means you’re missing out on what you wish to change about it and the way it’s portrayed, how we use it in life and on screen.

for me it isn't about morality and i think people who balk at others anxieties around sex or complain about gen zers being pure and bla bla bla are also moralizing. they want to view sex as free(dom) and it is not nor has it ever been. i have a mostly ambivalent view though i am a sexual person, i’m very critical of what we think about all of it but that’s because i want to build this shit anew and none of us know what that looks like. ultimately i think people on "both sides" are grappling with the lack of control that we have many times and want an iron like grip on figuring sex /relationships/the lust balance out. defining it at every turn instead of letting it come (lol) with all its messiness and grotesqueness. we'll always struggle with this but i don't want to not feel that struggle in, particularly in art, if that makes sense.

*(idk if it /is/ sexy lol just because sex is present and "hot" people do it doesn't mean that it is...GOT...euphoria...bc again sex is a messy thing in society and frankly we view “good” sex as two "hot" people fucking, the amount of partners they have, and largely penetrative or ~edgy~ to make it a legitimate sexual encounter.)

The sex scenes in this drama arent unnecessary at all, they are carefully placed and offer deeper insights into…
i would argue that it's not so much wild as it is accepted and dictates what broader society is/isnt allowed to do. i don't know if the writers intend that but to me a monarchy is steeped in violent psychosexual management and i rarely, if ever, see it as positive per se. those relations are riddled with intentional imbalance and a purposeful "hedonism".

all of that said i hope they lean into the bisexual potential and continue to show us the destructive passion. that's part of what makes it memorable and sexy. idk IF the sex is sexy in the show i hope lol. also i would like to see more sex on tv in korea. haven't watched a kdrama in a long time and it would be cool to see it outside of grandiose power lives. they can start with kissing like human beings oh my god.

They don't need sex to protray human behaviour. Powerful story telling is when subtle scenes are used to convey…
people have sex. it's complicated and weird and we are weird about it but we have it, enjoy it, hate it, love it, whatever. it's always there. and in terms of monarchies and class? they use sex and sexual subjugation as life and death affirming. it could be unnecessary (i'd have to see what that means; is it because it's too much?) but does that really matter?

this is also not porn. porn is exclusively made to titilate and get people off lol. if people want to talk about the imbalance of nudity between men and women then i'm all for it. there's other criticisms i can think of that may arise: maybe they don't portray the class and gender relations well enough. maybe people are flattening what the sex /means/ as simply liberatory and divorcing our current climate from it!

however, there's nothing like wrong with it purely because it is there and exists. i'd argue that pretending it doesn't exist and shying away doesn't let us confront our fears and maybe limitations on how we do view sex. and it is also just a tv show. imo it's good to have this on korean tv tbh. if the complaint is that it isn't a good show and they don't confront sex enough in terms of the story then i can get with it but if it's just that they have sex and show it then.....
