I can’t praise Liu Xueyi enough for his performance here\. Jing Qi looks so dejected and defeated\. You can feel his loneliness without him saying a word\.

After Lanxiang’s second slap and her harsh lecture about Jing Qi using his status and power to get his way, he’s finally learning to step back. Yuchan is still keeping an eye on things for him, and he quietly paid the 500 taels for the pawned jewellery, but he isn’t taking over Lanxiang’s decisions. She proved she could get the jewellery back her own way, and he’s beginning to see just how capable the wife he chose really is.

So, are we more satisfied with Jing Qi now, or is he still an inconsiderate red flag? To me, he wants to become the kind of husband Lanxiang needs, even if he’s learning slowly. He still has doubts and has the urge to step in—can she really earn back the 500 taels?—but he’s starting to understand that he has to change how he handles things if he wants to connect with her.

Now I’m wondering whether Lanxiang will see how hard he’s trying, and whether she’ll realise she can ask him for help without giving up control.

I honestly felt such a strong connection to this story, both as a woman and as a mother. There’s an emotional roller coaster here that I think women can relate to on a very personal level. Even within the story, they mention that the play is especially popular among women.

And I think that’s part of the point: no matter how much of a green flag a man may be, there are certain struggles, sacrifices, and emotions that he may never fully understand simply because he hasn’t lived them.

Exactly! That’s why I dropped The Double. I couldn’t get into a story where one woman, with the help of other women, destroys another woman’s life over a man. It felt like such a cheap source of conflict. As you said, women are so much more than that.

I’m enjoying how refreshing this story feels. Even in female-led dramas like Yanxi Palace and The Double, so much of the conflict revolves around men. Against the Current feels almost like the opposite: no one is fighting over a man. Lanxiang and xingtang do not even want anything to do with Jing Qi. Lol

Good thing they made the daughter of 2nd aunt more sensible and not desperate for finding a husband! I actually love that the FL’s main struggles in the story come from her own story and her relationship with her husband—not from constantly fighting jealous or evil women which is a common theme in women focused drama.

Even Ji’er, who I initially thought would become the jealous coworker, ended up being one of her best friends. So refreshing! 😂

I know! I don’t understand why there’s so much hate for the ML. He’s flawed and makes mistakes—which makes him about as human as a character can possibly be.

It still looks so much like a business transaction though because lanxiang our ice queen still does not want to melt…

I agree. I think the writer has been pretty consistent in showing this side of the ML. He’s flawed—especially in love and in how he uses his power and status—but at his core, he’s still a good son and a good brother. His flaws don’t erase his good qualities, just as his good qualities don’t excuse his flaws.

Lanxiang freeing Ji’er without the Empress’s decree humbled Jing Qi—proof that not everything needs power and connections.

But Jing Qi using his connections to help the girls get resident cards probably humbled Lanxiang too. Sometimes his power is useful. 😂

He’s learning not to rely on it for everything; she’s learning she doesn’t have to do everything alone.

Yes! I read that Yoo Seung-ho played Brutus in Killing Caesar without an alternate cast, carrying the role himself for 10 weeks. Imagine what kind of discipline does this to an actor.
