I just discovered Ci Sha, and as someone who loves analyzing acting, I think his biggest strength is his eyes. He conveys emotions and intensity through them really effectively.

That said, if we’re being technical, my slight gripe is that he sometimes lacks enough microexpressions and emotional shifts. His eyes may show that his character is scheming or calculating something against Fu Hai Lian, but the rest of his face can stay a bit too still. I can see why some viewers might read that as wooden acting, even though the intention is there.

I feel that if he added tiny details — like a slight gaze shift, subtle brow movement, or faint smirk — he could make the calculating side feel even more layered.

That said, I still enjoyed his performance because this role is supposed to be controlled and restrained. Sometimes the lack of expression actually works for the character and gives him a composed, unreadable aura.

Another strength of his is his strong physical presence and aura. He naturally carries an intimidating yet charismatic energy on screen, and that alone already sells the character well, even when he isn’t doing much.

Agree. Right from Episode 1, it was clear as day that the FL only had eyes for the ML, even if at that point it was still just a small crush. Every gaze she throws at him feels so lingering and almost sticky — like she just can’t pull herself away from him.

She cares for ye xian but only as a friend. Just like How he cares for ji yao As a brother.

It’s such a slow burn love story, yet every ML and FL scene is powerful enough to stay in your memory — from the moment she grabbed the lantern and first saw him in the hallway, to her pretending to birdwatch, him casually taking a date cookie from her stash, saving her from drowning, her re-embroidering his cloak, all the way to that first confession. There are many more after the confession and I already plan to rewatch all these once it ends.

I remember that scene. SML Playing victim again throwin tantrum and ML gave him a hard reality check.

I did a little research on Winwin and it seems he has been proactively pursuing acting training, which honestly shows in his performance. You can see that he approaches acting quite technically, using eye shifts, pauses, and microexpressions to portray internal calculation and emotional changes. Credit where credit is due — he is clearly putting effort into refining his craft.

That said, I do think the character itself is poorly written - having tantrums and all. Had the writers made him more layered and emotionally compelling like Deng Kai’s character in Pursuit of Jade, viewers probably would have felt far more empathy toward him

Both ML and FL are characters are great. I would become friends with them if they are real people and i won’t easily say this to other cdrama characters i have watched!

Those who prefer Ji yao cousin will turn down CYY. Simpler life and money rich 😊

I think the ML’s intention was to protect the Ye family, since that was also the young emperor’s wish but young emperor do not dare to outright disagree with fu hai lian.

CYY deliberately exaggerated the conflict with Ye Xian to make the public believe they were no longer on good terms. But in secret, he had already tipped Ye Xian off, telling him to personally escort his father to prison and go there himself to at least ensure his dad is taken care of inside the prison.

I think CYY plans to use public sympathy. He even mentioned that the least he could do was preserve the Ye family’s reputation, but saving the marquis father’s life is not guaranteed — something along those lines.

To me, it was obvious from the very beginning that the FL never saw the SML as anything more than a friend. The difference in her behavior toward the ML and the 2ML is like day and night. With the ML, she becomes shy, tense, and looks like she’s about to melt every single time. With the 2ML, she acts completely relaxed, like she’s just with a regular best friend.

And honestly, who would fall for a guy who throws tantrums and gets physical whenever things don’t go his way?

So far, we haven’t really had a major ML jealousy scene yet, so I’m curious what kind of conflict the drama will bring in the final third once the 2ML and 3ML start acting up. It’s going to be quite a show.

I love ji yao’s character. He is capable, smart, cares for FL and uber rich!

Yes to this! I also think he was only intrigued and maybe physically find her beautiful and smart but not in love, but after saving her the second time that’s when he had the epiphany.

What I really enjoyed about their romance is that even though they were clearly attracted to each other from the very beginning, neither of them crossed the line before trust and friendship were established. It genuinely felt like they became good friends first before the ML even proposed, which made their relationship feel much more natural and meaningful.

IMO jinzhao instantly developed a crush on CYY the moment she met him at the hallway while she was bantering with Ji Yao. But of course she never thought about growing into a romantic feelings because they are obviously worlds apart.

I’d say extend it to ep 9, that’s is where you will see the turning point. The ML does not have a lot of scenes in the first 10 episodes.

Btw we are on ep 25 at the moment and I anticipate once the couple officially get together that is where the political challenges begin.

What are you after? I’d say most viewers who enjoy this drama are here for the simmering romance between the main leads — the chemistry, tension, and slow burn. Plus, both the ML and FL feel like a breath of fresh air.

ML — a high-ranking official, mature, widowed, respectful, and gentle. Even after he falls for the FL, he is never pushy, never forces his way into her life, and never abuses his power. He respects her decisions and gives her space. He can be sly and shameless at times, but viewers actually love him for it 😊

And Ci Sha really elevates the role. Since he comes from a martial arts background, his overall image feels very different from the usual idol actors. He has this incredibly masculine aura and a deadly gaze. But once he falls in love, the way his eyes soften will absolutely melt you.

FL — young, beautiful, smart, and from a filthy rich family. Because of her father, she is cynical about marriage, but she remains level-headed and practical. I love how different she is from conventional female leads — never acting cute or dumb, never overly bubbly, and not doing the usual silly drunk scenes. She is calm, elegant, and emotionally steady.

Put the two together and they slowly become such a satisfying power couple. If these kinds of characters appeal to you, then this drama is definitely worth watching.

Now if you are after a deeper plot with heavy revenge arcs, hidden birth secrets, or intense political struggles, then I honestly don’t think this drama is for you. The romance and character dynamics are clearly the main selling point here.
