I watched an interview where Liu Xueyi was teased about how nobody likes his character. 😂 He explained that they deliberately wanted to break away from the usual tropes instead of giving us another perfect, irresistible ML whom every woman wants to marry.
Jing Qi is flawed, lonely, and clearly not winning any popularity contests. But that’s the whole point! The drama is supposed to show how his relationship with Lanxiang develops and how they gradually bring out the best in each other.
Anyway, I will continue rooting for ML and his questionable romantic decisions. Is he perfect? No. Does Lanxiang deserve better? Possibly. Am I biased? Absolutely.

Lanxiang never really had that power from the beginning. At only 13, she was already betrothed to Jing Qi without even having met him. After changing her identity, she became a servant and could easily have been chosen as jing qi’s concubine, with very little power to refuse. Then, as a commoner, her parents decided that she should marry the Han scholar—not because she loved him, but because they considered him an appropriate match for her status.
Either way, Lanxiang never truly gets to decide for herself, and that’s the sad reality the drama keeps highlighting. The same applies, in different ways, to Zhao, Ji’er, Zheng Manyi and the other women. Their circumstances may be different, but they’re all being moved around like chess pieces in a society where marriage, family and status often determine their lives for them.

He chose the woman he actually loves without caring about her status or using marriage to form a political or family alliance. Instead of simply allowing his elders to decide his future, he actively chose the person he wanted

He already knew that Lanxiang didn’t have romantic feelings for him, and that she was only willing to consider the match because she wanted to honor her parents’ wishes. To her family, he was the sensible choice because they were considered well-matched in status.
Honestly, her adoptive parents don’t need to panic that much about the “status mismatch.” 😂 they already know Lanxiang is actually a noble lady herself. In terms of intellect, talent, beauty, and family background, she’s absolutely a match for Jing Qi. Just that nobody knows.
What I’m more curious about now is how Lanxiang will behave once she enters the Lin household after marriage. Will she instinctively fall back into her habit of acting like a lowly servant and gossip with her ex colleagues or will she immediately switch gears and carry herself as the wife of the house? Because as we’ve already seen, presenting herself as a noble lady doesn’t seem to require much effort from her at all. 😍

At least now she’s being “caged” as the wife personally chosen by the emperor—which is still a huge upgrade from being caged a servant. 😂 And honestly, this probably would have been her life anyway if the Shen family tragedy had never happened.
I love the sibling-like relationship between Yuchan and Jing Qi. He even asked for her opinion on his decision to marry Lanxiang, which says a lot about his character how he treats his trusted servants.
And I love it even more that Yuchan is completely supportive. She’d much rather happily serve Lanxiang as the lady of the house than end up with some random wife his mother chooses—someone who might make life difficult for all of them.
Liu Xueyi can portray layers upon layers of emotion with remarkable fluidity, especially the subtler, more difficult emotions. When Jing Qi realised the blue flower implied he might have to marry Miss Du, that fleeting mixture of fear, discomfort, and an awkward attempt to smile was so precise. Then, during the “tennis match” of compliments between Scholar Han and Lanxiang, he sat silently between them, revealing insecurity, helplessness, and jealousy through the smallest shifts in expression. He makes every layer of emotional subtext visible without ever overplaying it.
I could not comfortably take the comment about how he is lacking range because he is evoking emotions with such precision.
