From ML’s POV:
He has no idea Lanxiang is actually his former fiancée, Shen Jialan. He doesn’t know about her trauma, her family’s downfall, or that she now wants a quiet life away from noble-family politics. To him, she is simply a former servant who became a commoner, so naturally he assumes that someone in her position should be happy to marry a man like him.

And yes, this is where ML is a bit of an orange flag. 😂 He assumes a woman of lower status would have little reason to refuse him.

From FL’s POV:
Lanxiang still carries resentment toward him and the Lin family, even though she knows it was not entirely his fault. Objectively, she can see that he is a decent man and probably a good match for some noble lady. But emotionally, there is still this huge rock sitting in her heart when it comes to him. So she simply never sees him as a potential husband no matter how eligible he may appear to be.

The irony is that neither of their perceptions is completely true. They are both judging each other based on only half the story—which is exactly why their relationship still has so much room to change once those layers start coming off.

True. Lanxiang has kept a fairly neutral stance toward Jing Qi all this time. What holds her back is the resentment she still carries from the cancelled engagement. But objectively, I think she knows he’s a decent man and lin family was not the cause of the shen family tragedy.

She saw him discover his wife’s betrayal and quietly arrange the divorce without speaking badly of her. He took responsibility for his family, never took a concubine, and even spared the servants who knew about the affair. Surely Lanxiang can see that he ticks quite a few boxes. She just never let herself consider him that way because of their history and circumstances.

Little did she know he was already finding his way back to her. 😂
