It’s so hard to hate him.

I see it differently. Neither man is necessarily “better” for Lanxiang. Like everyone else, they both have strengths and flaws, and marrying either of them would come with its own pros and cons.

But when it comes to love and marriage, I think timing and fate play a huge part. Lanxiang is clearly destined to end up with Jing Qi. They were betrothed years ago, their engagement was cancelled, and six years later—even after she changed her identity and became a servant—fate still brought them back together.

Sometimes you meet someone who seems perfect for you, ticks the right boxes, but the timing and the universe simply don’t cooperate. Then there is the person who somehow arrives at the right moment, and everything eventually falls into place. At least, that has been my own experience with friendships and relationships.

Honestly he really does come across as like a 2ML loser. Lol. But i love an underdog, go ML.

Someone on Reddit compared Spring of the Blade and Against the Current.

Spring of the Blade — fast-paced, not boring, lots going on. (I’m not watching it, so I can’t really comment.)

Then Against the Current — slow burn, good actresses, but the ML is “lacking range.”

I mean… 😭 I can’t speak for the other claims, but our ML lacking range? Liu Xueyi is honestly one of the stronger and emotionally satisfying actors I’ve ever watched. It’s fascinating how differently people can perceive the same performance.

Maybe his acting style is too restrained for some viewers? So much of his performance is in the tiny shifts—the eyes, the pauses, the tension in his face, the way his expression changes without him actually doing much. To me, that’s precisely what makes him so compelling. But others complain he is “lacking range”? I can’t.

She is so cool and pretty

I am rooting for our current SML jing q to finally upgrade to his rightful position as ML. He has a lot to prove but he has til ep 47 to do that ….

Yeah, I think Liu Xueyi mentioned in one of the interviews that the directors deliberately wanted to move beyond the usual tropes and present something a little different. And I think one of the most obvious examples is how they chose not to portray the ML as this extremely handsome, powerful, righteous man whom everyone automatically admires.

Compare him with iconic male leads like Ling Buyi in Love Like the Galaxy, where practically every noble lady wants to marry him, or Xie Zheng in Pursuit of Jade, the youngest marquis who is handsome and powerful. Meanwhile, our ML starts off as an assistant commander with a wife who basically ignores him. 😂 In some ways, he really does come across as such a loser.

That’s why I’m expecting this surface image to gradually peel away as the story progresses. I am really rooting for him because he does appear to be like the underdog now.

For me i don’t hate 2ML. He can definitely be a perfect match for lanxiang but i just love the ML more….. and i can see where ML’s pain is coming from so i am rooting for him.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I was also surprised that some viewers misunderstood the ML’s family as the one who caused Shen’s family downfall, when it’s not.

I anticipate Lanxiang will start seeing him in a different light once they’re married and actually living together as husband and wife. I think that’s when she’ll begin to see not just his strengths, but also his weaknesses, struggles, and vulnerabilities.

Up to now, we’ve actually been given very few details about the ML beyond the fact that he always seems to be one step behind the 2ML when it comes to Lanxiang. 😂 So I’m really hoping the marriage arc gives us more character development and lets us understand him on a much deeper level.
