The writing really wants to deceive both us and the FL into thinking the ML is useless. Even when he saw her performing onstage and realised she could be in danger, he still walked away. But it turns out they already had a plan in place, and he was focused on the bigger picture. He desperately wants to earn enough merit from the Crown Prince to request that marriage decree later.
Gosh, the scriptwriters really don’t want to give our ML any brownie points before the marriage! First, his family cancelled their engagement. Then she became their servant and even had to risk her life as his spy. Now she’s in danger again because of his prospective marriage, while the 2ML is the one who rescues her after she’s kidnapped. At this point, in the FL’s eyes, our ML is nothing but a walking source of trouble in her life. 😂

There was a YouTube spoiler clip explaining Jing Qi’s motivation for getting the marriage decree. Aside from the fact that he has genuinely fallen for Lanxiang, he also realizes that she has now become a target of his enemies. As a commoner, she has very little protection, so marrying her is also his way of keeping her safe.

You know what… in hindsight, she may not be totally oblivious. She probably just never expected JQ to go to such lengths just to marry her, especially considering she’s only a commoner.
The drama is starting to feel slightly different to me, especially in the last couple of episodes. I don’t mind…
Yeah, She’s being used as a cheap plot device to give JQ an even more compelling reason to pursue the marriage decree. Now he’s facing pressure from two directions—the Han scholar on Lanxiang’s side and Zheng Manyi on his own.
And of course, they even had to turn Zheng Manyi into the stereotypical, almost cartoonishly evil love-triangle rival just to raise the stakes. 😂 her presence is pushing JQ to stop hovering and make an irreversible choice.
This is honestly the first time I’ve watched a C-drama where the ML looks like a total loser in front of SML. 😂 The SML clearly has the upper hand.
And it doesn’t help that Liu Xueyi’s portrayal is so spot-on. That look on Jing Qi’s face—awkward, threatened, helpless, yet still desperately trying to recompose and connect with Lanxiang. I actually feel so bad for him. He had just started to hold on to this tiny flicker of hope that maybe, finally, he had found the one.
And then comes his rival who is actually quite a competition….whatever ML is about to do,i can’t blame him. 😂
