Who happened to be smart but timid and just wants to be out of any complicated situation yet circumstances kept pulling her in….

I think she’s really just following her heart. Her strengths are reading and writing rather than physical labor, so naturally she chose an area where she knows she’s capable and comfortable.

And because she’s genuinely so unassuming, it probably never even crossed her mind to worry about whether working there would mean bumping into the ML more often.

I also love how she keeps reassuring her friend not to worry about having to bear a child for the ML because, according to her, he wouldn’t take an interest in either of them anyway. 😂

Well… little did she know. 😂

I think the FL’s arc is quite refreshing because it doesn’t follow the usual “whole family gets killed, she changes her identity, then spends her life making mistakes and seeking revenge” route. That setup has become so common.

Her story is almost the opposite. Her whole family was killed, she changed her identity, and all she really wanted was to live quietly and modestly. But circumstances brought her into the Lin household, and the more she tries to leave and regain her freedom, the more entangled she becomes—especially as the ML slowly starts to realise that she is far more than just an ordinary servant.

So her arc is almost ironic: the more she wants to stay away from family politics, power struggles, and everything connected to her past, the more deeply she gets pulled into them. The harder she tries to leave, the more circumstances—and the ML’s growing curiosity about who she really is—keep her stuck right in the middle of it all.

Agree. The actors are great.

Maybe I just haven’t watched enough C-dramas, but I still find the FL’s character quite refreshing. For a change, she isn’t driven by revenge or obsessed with clearing her family’s name. She genuinely wants to leave the Lin household, build a life of her own, and move forward.

And from what I understand, she’ll eventually be betrothed to someone else, which makes it even more interesting because, in a way, she is already prepared to let go of the past and start over rather than allowing it to define her.

It’s quite different from The Sword and the Brocade, also played by Tan Songyun. There, her character was so focused on finding her mother’s killer that she repeatedly overlooked her husband’s kindness and everything he was quietly doing for her. So it turned her character to somewhat toxic.

This is the kind of trope I enjoy—the FL is intelligent and beautiful, but she’s so unassuming and focused on other things (like getting her freedom back) that she forgets her intelligence alone is enough to attract unwanted attention from men she has absolutely no interest in. Lol

Can anyone explain their interpretation of the Episode 7 scene where Jing Qi asks Liang Xiang to be his eyes and ears? He offers her a cup of tea, and Liang Xiang agrees to comply with his request as part of her duty, but she doesn’t drink the tea. After she leaves, Jing Qi simply pours the untouched tea away.

I feel like there’s some symbolism behind that gesture, but I’m curious how others interpreted it.

I saw a preview of Episode 15, and the ML is starting to make these subtle little moves to interact with the FL—asking her completely irrelevant things just to create an excuse to talk to her. 😂 Meanwhile, she is totally clueless and don’t even care. Gosh, this man has a lot of work to do!

Exactly. I hate it when a cdrama claims to be female centric yet there is always a powerful man smitten with the FL secretly maneuvering things in the background. I hope this one stays consistent.

This drama feels a bit like The Double in premise, but I personally think it’s handled much more tastefully. Both FLs were wronged from the start, but here the FL doesn’t have to go through this absurd journey of swapping identities, suddenly dealing with an evil stepmother and stepsister, and conveniently having Duke Su there to protect her every single time.

I especially enjoy the FL’s journey here because you really see how carefully she has to navigate everything—almost like she’s constantly walking on eggshells just to survive. Revenge isn’t even on her radar because she is so lowly she cannot afford to even think about it. She’s simply trying to rebuild her life and protect the people she cares about, which makes her story feel much more grounded and emotionally compelling to me.

For me it reminds me of yanxi palace, excepe the Fl here is living in fear

I also dropped road to splendor in the last ten episodes. It was great the first half then became too political and toxic. Not my cup of tea.

I agree. I rarely cry, but every time she has a scene with her adoptive parents—planning their future and talking about how they’ll save enough money to buy their freedom—I tear up. They truly nailed their characters, and their story really tugs at my heart. I also love that she is written as hopeful and focused on rebuilding her life with her parents, rather than being consumed by bitterness and revenge.
