You really have to sit with the drama, reflect on it, and dig through discussion groups to piece everything together. They don’t show or spell out everything—you’re expected to read between the lines… and complain a little on the side while figuring it all out. 😂

I love that they’re all watching along with us and seem so immersed in their own characters. It feels like we’re sharing this journey with them.

I wonder if this happens with other C-dramas too, because I don’t remember the casts of Splendid Match or Road to Splendor being this involved in the discussions on Weibo.

Yup, I think the whole drama wants us to read between the lines rather than spell everything out.

For me, the first turning point was when she started opening up to Jing Qi about her guilt—how she felt that her attempts to sidestep trouble had indirectly almost cost Xiaolan her life. Sharing those inner thoughts with him was already a step towards building emotional intimacy.

She also started connecting with everyone in his family, which suggests she was beginning to see herself as his wife and part of that family. Then there’s the way she goes with him to visit the graves, holding hands as they hike towards the secluded spot. Earlier in the drama, he probably would’ve got the cold shoulder for even trying!

If I have one complaint, though, it’s that their conversations still feel a little too businesslike, even as their actions suggest they’re growing closer.

Even in the romance arc, you have to engage your brain a little because there are hardly any explicit scenes saying, “Yep, she loves him.” It’s all in the silent conversations, the small choices, and those quiet acts of loyalty.

And considering she’s spent so much of her life living under someone else’s identity, she’s probably used to maneuvering things quietly and keeping her real intentions hidden.

I’m one of the viewers who found the romantic build-up disappointing, so I went digging through RedNote, and one interpretation finally clicked: Lanxiang starts embracing her role as his wife when she shifts from protecting herself to protecting him. She goes out of her way to save him, writes a play to gently plant the idea that serving the emperor is dangerous, and low pressure suggests they return to Jinling.

Apparently, our FL’s love language isn’t
what we wanted to see.—it’s quietly planning his survival and their retirement.

I’ve now resorted to digging through RedNote to unpack all the symbolism. The poem recited throughout the drama seems to mirror Jing Qi’s life. As his family members die, he gradually loses his support system and begins to question the purpose of everything he has done for the emperor. It’s essentially his journey toward finally choosing for himself.

Someone on RedNote praised the director’s visual storytelling, pointing to the still water on the lake and the two eggs in a nest in episode 39 as symbols of Lanxiang and Jing Qi’s feelings finally becoming still and mutual.

I know, right?! We came all the way from Episode 1, patiently waiting for that emotional payoff, and all we got was… a time skip?! 😭 Do they seriously expect us to just use our imagination to fill in everything that happened in between?

I’m starting to wonder whether part of the problem was Tan Songyun’s portrayal being just a little too guarded. I understand that Lanxiang wasn’t supposed to openly show that she was falling for him, but I wish she had allowed the occasional “I’m starting to like this person” look to slip through her eyes.

Instead, for so much of the drama, she still feels like a corporate girl talking to a client. 😂 I think a few tiny cracks of affection would have made a difference

They took the female centric theme too seriously that they really prioritise female issues first. 😝

Splendid Match is another drama I really enjoyed this year, and honestly, there are plenty of things Against the Current does better. But when it comes to the emotional payoff after the leads finally get together, Splendid Match wins hands down for me.

i honestly feel a little shortchanged by ATC in that department. I know they cast Liu Xueyi for his acting skills—and he absolutely delivered—but it wouldn’t have hurt to take advantage of his good looks too and give us a little more romance. 😂 You have Liu Xueyi looking like THAT and this is all we get?

I’m sure Weibo is filled with similar comments. Such a waste of our ML’s handsomeness 😭 They had all that face card and still didn’t give us enough proper romantic scenes.
