I'd be going a tad off-tangent, and try to inject some humor to this (not that it was necessary)... but this is dedicated to all the Indian folks out there!~
Remember those Indian-soaps when an actor quits midway quite abruptly, and the writers make his/her character meet with an accident, and BOOM.... several plastic-surgeries later, it's a brand new human being, and a totally different actor with ZERO resemblance to the previous one.... and NOBODY recognizes the character and ~un-necessary drama~ follows?!!
Can't believe I'd see something like this in a k-drama! xD

Ps. I feel super-bad for the prod-team and cast who has to reshoot everything post ep 8. Heard Jisoo had filmed 95% of his scenes (upto ep 18).... Sad. My heart goes out to KSH <3

Kinda agree when I saw the title reboot . Goong was a classic, but its very much of its time with its setups -…
One thing I realized from following Chinese dramas (99% of which are adapted from webtoon/ web novels/ other source materials, etc) is that the dramas are blockbuster/ sleeper hits inspite of a lesser high-profile cast and lesser budget, when the screenwriter is a FAN of the original work, and knows the story and the characters like the back of their hands. I hope they get a good team who doesn't just rehash and repackage the story and throw it on our faces.
That said, where do I apply for the job? ;-) ;D

Once you get over the initial ditsy-ness of the FL and the cold aloofness of the ML, I think the biggest takeaway from the story was discovering how beautifully the author had established that a free-spirit like CK could never thrive in the constraints of the Palace, and that despite her leaving Shin eventually, he grew up to accept that fact and get over his insecurity.....that she could choose freedom, and yet have immense love for him. And she knew that despite his inability to abandon his family and duties, he would still love her in every capacity possible... and their mutual understanding and affection would make her come midway, and he would match each step to hers.
It has a beautiful message for the youth, where society expects one half of the couple to do all the heavy-lifting in a relationship. Goong, to me, was never about 3rd party obstacles for the couple (inspite of having tons of court-politics)... they were each others' biggest strengths and also the biggest weakness they had to overcome, to finally get together. The rest was.... set-dressing? Hence I hope, the story is about growth and acceptance, rather than annoyingly cliched character tropes to create ~drama~
You're absolutely correct on the universal-appeal of HYD's story.... But the biggest gripe for me was the characters never really *grew* up. I would say the second half of Goong (the manhwa atleast) was in ways, much like an older sister to shoujo stories like HYD, because it dealt with themes usually covered in josei mangas! :D

The manhwa ending was *chef's kiss*I would sell a kidney to see that ending adapted onscreen T_T
The ending is very different, it deviates from about the midway point of the manhwa (because 2006 was when only half of the chapters had been released) please check your inbox, I have messaged you a brief synopsis! ^^

I think they can circumvent this problem by making the remake plot-driven and issue-driven rather than character-driven. Because everybody knows Shin will eventually come around and fall for Chae-Kyung (so it's not a mind-boggling reveal to have the nice-girl breaking through the cold ML's exterior)... Instead they should focus more on their individual issues: Chae-Kyung's need to be loved, to gain freedom and to have an identity of her own beyond being the 'crown prince's wife', and Shin's need to grow up and shoulder his responsibilities like an adult without constantly feeling like a fraud and a replacement for Yul; and both of their needs to get over their ego, and give their love a fair chance.
Plot strength-wise, Goong def wins over Hana Yori Dango... so I'd say it has more potential for resonating with a younger crowd. :D

Is the manwha name the same? I haven't read it
Manhwa is called Goong, published under Wink Magazine. Author/ artist: park so-hee.
Vol. 27, ch 179 is the last. Although the readers tore their hair out at the open, unresolved ending, it was heavily implied what would happen eventually. The artist eventually gave into the readers, and drew an epilogue chapter (after a time skip).
So make sure you read the epilogue too :D It's adorable if you want to see the lead couple's toddler ^^
I personally loved the ending (much like in the case of Crash Landing on You). Very realistic, and not all-fantasy 'life is fairytale' kind of an ending! :D

That is why im hoping they push the boundaries with it being a alternate reality drama. They could make a beautiful…
I mean, the manhwa had revolutionary topics like unplanned pregnancy of a public figure in her 40's, who already has a son that has reached legal-adulthood and is constitutionally considered married.
They were really shy about this in the 2006 drama and changed the whole plot. Maybe you're right, Korea isn't ready to talk about bold-feminist issues yet.

>What?!! A Monarch's wife in her mid 40's has an active sex-life? Scandalous!!!<
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Absolutely, the premise of the manhwa was already SO good, *because* they talked about difficult topics amidst the comic-relief. Infact, I believe the manhwa also turned into an adult-melodrama after the half-way point (exactly the point where the drama deviated from)....
>>It would serve as a really good platform to address all the major issues but with a modern resolve yet not compromise the original story points. <<
This. If they can manage to squeeze in the conversation, it can be a really profound, coming-of-age drama.
>>....or they will age up the leads.<< They have to be minors at the point of their marriage, so it won't work. If they are already legally adults, they *will* be forced to share a bed. The lack of physical interaction in the first half of the story *is* the reason why neither of them took each other seriously as their SO/ spouse. Also, getting minors married for the heck of royal succession.... is another brilliant topic that can be touched upon!
>>Or they will make it into a watered down school drama with glossed over issues and nonsensical characters.<< Like the original 2006 version? Oops :P This is my biggest fear, lol!
>>I mean if you could step out of the box this drama has the potential for it.<< Step out of the box and stick to manhwa, and it might be blockbuster hit. The youth WANTS to have these conversation.

They can't.... they'll have to change the story again!~
(there is no wayyyy you have a super-nice ML, and the FL- who is married to him- resists her feelings towards her own husband for more than 120 chapters)...
They tried it with Meteor Garden 2018... was super un-convincing!

I see you're a manhwa-reader/ fan as well?!Agreed on the teenagers bit. Adolescence-fueled rage and toxicity happens…
Woah.... I cannot believe I would be jealous of somebody on this comment section! *_* I'm sure the fans who did the scan-lations did a pretty good job, but somethings just get lost in translation! I sincerely hope it's a much more enjoyable experience to read the raws, should you happen to find them! <3

As much as I liked the original and the manwha way back then, I feel the plot is kinda old-fashioned nowadays.…
Really? I thought the feminist themes were really well-done for a shoujo-manhwa! As long as they tone down some of the earlier 'airhead' moments of the FL and 'entitled-jerk behavior' of the ML, we'll be safe... Plus, everybody just gets morose and forced to grow up TOO fast post chapter 90-ish? The 'klutz & tsundere' romance was dialed-up SO much for the 2006 adaptation, the characters completely lost their many layers, which were developed nicely by the artist/ author.
As long as it sticks to the manhwa, and isn't a blatant remake of the drama, we'll be good! :D
