The show includes offscreen relationship building. It's not day by day or play by play, there are time lapses and things that are implied to happen that are not shown to us, the characters essentially 'living their lives'. It can be assumed XS and SW have texted or chatted on the phone as friends do to keep each other updated.

The novel is very good in a different way, there are A LOT of major things changed in the series to suit censorship. The novel also has more details, more doors and a better ending. I would recc reading it, if you are a fan of reading. That said, finish the show too if you can, it's a gem in and of itself. They did a great job with this adaptation, even though it differs from the novel in some key ways.

It was a proper kiss in the novel, they kissed full on (it was hot, ngl) and THAT'S why WS got jelly and it was a catalyst for his and CC's issues. There's more to it as well in the novel. In the series they only show the peck on the lips but imply that they kiss again, and we only see Suowei's face as he reacts to it. CC and CY have some sexual history in the novel.

Character/story/world/plot building is something the Chinese writers/producers are really good at, they understand that the filler doesn't have to wasted and that the little things interactions and moments between characters can make a big difference!
