Message from the novelโs author, Chai Ji Dan:https://www.reddit.com/r/boyslove/s/xXdZFmTg4x
Thanks for sharing this and I agree with the other commenter to make it a discussion thread so it doesn't get lost in the influx of commentary. As someone who never liked Addicted or this author's rapey themes in her work, I'm glad to have seen this.
To hear the author acknowledge that her written choices of 'dark' content, done in a way that was supposed to be 'entertaining', in her youth was misguided by what was popular at the time (just as certain eye rolling awful shitty themes are popular in fanfiction now among young writers who want to stay on trend) shines some needed light on her works. It's common unfortunately, most young writers get caught up in writing whatever the 'fad' is.
I'm happy to be supporting this adaptation, I think it's looking to be a great updated vision of her original book.
I use twitter for BL updates, if I see something I like incoming, I just add it on MDL. I try it, if I like it or it's good for background watching, I watch it, if I don't like it, I drop it. I'm like that with all shows from any country lol Very seldomly do I get majorly attached, especially in BL, it's only happened previously with a handful of BLs where they have stayed with me up to now.
I thought The Next Prince was hyped because the main pairing is supposed to be some big deal? I watched it out of curiosity, but I like the Net and ever since he he got his new partner I've been looking forward to seeing his and JJ's standalone BL in future, so seeing them in TNP is just a taste. I don't have any interest in the other two pairs tbh. But I get what you're saying, wasted budgets on bad BL sucks. Reminds of the waste of SXV with Mosbank, great pair, decent budget, absolutely shit, embarrassing script.
The Bangkok Boy is NOTHING like Knock Out. Knock Out dropped the ball in like episode 3, TBB is still going strong, unpredictable, good acting, interesting and funny. It's an entertaining watch. The Sparkle in your Eye is another new uncensored Chinese BL, right up my alley personally. But I like more serious and darker themed shows, maybe they're not for everyone XD
For me The Next Prince is a background watch, I was never all that interested in the hype so I'm not disappointed since I had no expectations lol. But I can understand being disappointed in something you've waited on for a long time. I'm only watching it for Net and JJ honestly.
Of all the BLs airing rn I'm only really invested in Revenged Love, The Sparkle in your Eye and The Bangkok Boy, the rest are all just for passing time to me.

You're going in circles and somehow missing the basic point.
They don't show it in censored BLs because it's censored, but the characters are GAY, they're not friends and if China didn't have a ban, they'd be all over each other, very GAYLY (like right here in Revenged Love). The Untamed, The Spirealm, Stay With Me, Advance Bravely, Word of Honor, Justice in the Dark are all GAY.
In Bromance, they're platonic, there's nothing censored, with or without the ban, they're FRIENDS only. They would change nothing if the ban was lifted. THAT is bromance.
so far, this is looking like r*ape apologia in pastel packaging..no, falling in love will not "heal" a r*apist…
Most of the viewers here, who are not making a fuss about the rapey undertones, are aware that this show is adapted from a novel of a writer who (unfortunately) likes rapey themes. In adapting the show, the producers wanted it to match the novel as much as possible for the major fans of her writing, but they still toned it down a lot (thankfully).
I'd recommend to those who are bothered by it, that they can either move on from the show if it's really upsetting for them (no judgement), or to do like myself (and others who dislike those themes), just disconnect from it. Remember that it's just the writer's personal 'kink', it's not an 'everybody's into it' scenario.
As for 'villainous' themes and the manhandling, welp, I'm a big fan. Sorry not sorry.

They're gay.
Bromance is it's OWN genre, with platonic friendship. Censored BL is a censored relationship, they are not allowed to overtly state it, but they are gay. It's not platonic. Lan Zhan wasn't looking at Wei Ying like a friend no matter how much those no-homo goggles are blinding you. lol
I love how casually Wu takes things out of Chiโs pocket lmao.Another great episode! Damn thatโs gonna be another…
It's the little interactions like that, that build atmosphere and closeness and paint a clearer relationship development between characters, that other BLs overlook and don't portray and really, it's just so many missed opportunities.

No such thing as bromance from a Chinese gay novel adapted series, 'bromance' is a legally obligatory name for it, FORCED name, they have no choice but to call it that. But Stay With Me is from gay source material that is censored, but it is 100% gay, they are gay. All censored Chinese BLs are gay.
Agreed, the majority of Thai BLs also focus too much on fan pleasing with the pairings, so the scripts are flimsy shit and there's almost no follow through on originality, they start interesting, like you mentioned, but fall into the same ol' tropes and cliches very quickly with predictable character actions and a predictable end.
I really liked a lot of the scene aesthetics in episode 6, I think Chi Cheng's living space is actually aesthetically appealing in general, put the two of them in that space with all that UST and we got visuals for daaaaaaays! And so well filmed and acted. My fave scene was when Chi Cheng was brooding by himself and Suo Wei showed up, the shot of him mirrored where he sat in his chair in the half light was PEAK.
I also like how their internal thoughts are filmed in real time, with good timing, not one character having 2 minute internal dialogue while the other character is standing there idly like it's normal, the thoughts are short, relevant and concise, adding appropriate context to the scenes. Aside from good filming choices, this episode was excellent for all that unfolded, at this point I think Suo Wei is still thinking ,on the surface, that he's just out for revenge, but subconsciously he's more affected by Chi Cheng way more than he's prepared for. Loving it!
Yes, I'm back again, 7 min to go, I just wanna say another compliment to the production team for actually showing PHYSICAL ATTRACTION. 9/10 BLs do not depict attraction, they just make them say some cheesy shit about they like each other's personalities, which, okay, but they should do more and do better. Chi Cheng checking out Suo Wei regularly has been excellent and in ep 5 especially, it was just another cherry on top of all the cherries already on top.
The only other two series that did this was Never Let Me Go (Thailand) and Fight For You (Taiwan), the quality of these BLs are not on par with Revenged Love, but they were good in their own ways and the flashbacks ADDED to the show instead of just repeating.
Danmei authors are literally the Shakespeares of our time and the fact that itโs so hard to adapt their works…
There are some that are really amazing for sure. The intricacies and details of the characters and stories are always nuanced, epic and just fantastic.
What's TGCF? And what Chinese novel could you recommend the most? ๐ฅน Do you have links?
I do know of this, but Painter of the Night is rapey isn't it? I hope the adaptation will filter it out or tone it down, like Revenged Love has done, and how Together With Me did.
Not sure if by 'this' you mean good BLs, or BLs with a similar theme, but this is my personal BL recc list: https://kisskh.at/list/4Ko6OAK4…
I see, alrighty, so yeah, out of Taiwan: someone mentioned We Best Love, I'd recc that one to (the sequel as well). Also My Tooth, Your Love, See Your Love, Fight For You and First Note of Love.
From China, as I mentioned The Sparkle in your Eye, Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island and Blue Canvas of my Youthful Days.
From SK: Semantic Error, The Eighth Sense, and currently airing is Ball Boy Tactics.
From Thailand: Century of Love and Love in Translation (same pairing), This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans and Never Let Me Go. Reset is also doing pretty good rn.
Nah nah, it's still good, but fr, bro needs to chill with the losing his shit in front of people over what happened in his other life. His lack of control over his emotions is over 9000 and will create a ripple effect of new dislike with the way he's going.
Ps: Armin's hairstyle is also pretty awful, but that's neither here nor there.
