Absolutely agree. This drama, thus far, has a nice balance to it between the seriousness and fleeting moments of levity. It's interesting that as much as it is character driven due to the all-round decent acting, the plot is no less intriguing too. The many shades of grey apply to all characters, as you mentioned. This almost feels like a republican era espionage story lol. Let's hope it continues to build and sustain the momentum right to the end!

Li Yan is the courtesy name of actual Tang emperor Wuzong, but I believe this drama is a "fusion" of fiction with historical details. The empire here is referred to as Xing instead of Tang Dynasty. Li Yan has been changed to Qi Yan in this story. Other details like Purple Robe Bureau and Chess General Department are also fictional, although the eunuch Qiu Shiliang and certain other events did exist based on historical records.

6 episodes in, I'm liking the overall tone and narrative. Cheng Yi's new "50 Shades" persona is devilishly fun to observe too! ☺️
