Agree to disagree on that one.My mind checked out on "It's not really problematic..."
True, since they can't meet up unless Yi is distracted and Kuea has "behaved enough to be allowed to go where he wants" in order for them to have time together. (Rolls eyes)

I keep recalling that Lian actually told him he could do what he wanted so long as he behaved. He actually fucking said that. I heard him. And yet I still can't quite believe it.

"Cutiepie would have been a great bl series if they had taken the arranged marriage plot and deconstructed it."

That's actually what I thought I was signing on for when I first came to watch it. I was expecting two people who didn't know each other well or whom had some kind of bad blood, being engaged as adults for reasons of a financial/business nature and the story would start with their marriage. I expected one party was unhappy about the arrangement and the other was for it and I expected the story to explore them getting to know each other and eventually falling love. Maybe with some outside force trying to break up the arranged marriage before the pair was solidly connected to each other. Possibly a scheming admirer of one of the characters.

I did NOT expect this toxic zoo of coercion, control issues, lying and manipulation. Or the underlying hypocrisy and arrogance. It's all just so unlikable.

The only thing the show really offered that I was into was the Kuea/Diao friendship. And I still find those to be the only really likable moments in the show.

It DOES feel like an early 2000's yaoi manga.

My problem with the arranged marriage is that they didn't accomplish it without it involving a LOT of canonical grooming of underage Kuea.

You're entitled to your opinion. But whether something is fiction or not has no bearing on whether we respond strongly to it.

People all over the world criticize works of fiction for their content as well as possible societal impact. There's more than enough academic evidence to bear out the argument that all media impacts the way in which society normalizes certain factors and so I could criticize it from that standpoint if I felt like it. And others have.

"This isn't real" has nothing to do with whether someone should become heated about its content. People get heated at advertisements that are insensitive to women. People get heated over movies that depict rape in a sexualized manner. People can get heated over any piece of fiction for any reason, including its lack of coherency or normalization of toxic relationship dynamics--which is what many of us have addressed about CP.

The fact that it's just a story doesn't matter in the least.

I think most of us that have disliked the show have encouraged people to try it for themselves. And the comments that describe the show in negative light are hardly more extreme than the fansqueeing that is the other side of the spectrum. Almost no one is going to be swayed by either group of people. So in the end this is just another post complaining about opinions on CP that don't show the drama in a light that the OP approves of.

And yes, the less overt toxicity is more problematic and for the exact reasons you listed. And it's been exhibited here that people can't spot it when they call out Yi for his behaviors and in the same post call what Lian does "cute". Guh.

Honestly I think this show is getting unnecessary hate. It's not really problematic other than communication issues…
No post exhibiting hate for this show is anymore unnecessary than love posted for the show. Because ultimately it's all just opinions and one opinion has no more value than another.

This show has a cadre of "problems" that have all been lined up and described in detail and the fact that some viewers think we're meant to look past those issues to just mindlessly enjoy the show doesn't mean we should. Just because this show isn't the worst one out there doesn't mean any negative opinions it garners are "unnecessary".

Some people really didn't feel the change in pace and tone worked well. Totally fair. I liked it as a first taste…
It was very back and forth between dramatic and funny. I think for me the funny worked because it was related to Porsche navigating his new situation with all the bravado that usually gets him through but which was absolutely the wrong approach this time. But I TOTALLY respect that you feel it was overdone.

I think we'll see more on the issue with Porchay soon. I kind of just assumed he wasn't part of the narrative that episode because they were going to burn some scenery getting Porsche settled in. Plus there was a focus on introducing the second family. And between the two there wasn't room for poor Porchay.

Sorry hon. My bad. I was lifting lyrics from an OLD song by Nancy Sinatra called "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'". It was popularized again a while back in the movie Kinky Boots.

The lyrics go something like this:

"These boots were made for walkin,
and that's just what they'll do.
And one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you."

It's a song about a person getting up and leaving a lover who is being dishonest and shady. Which is what Diao does that episode. I didn't mean to be confusing.

I have a surplus of words and I have to give them to someone. Might as well give them to all the deserving people on MDL.

Shit. Baby you had me at "hello". That drama was brutal. And yet it was so good. I was kept guessing until nearly the end. And I never ever thought a head injury would be the reset button for his life. Wow.

I watch Asian romances, but generally not Western ones, though there are a few exceptions. But my overall preference is action, supernatural suspense and crime dramas.

KP is looking to hit me with plenty of action and romance. So I am not complaining, even though I don't give a single damn about the sex scenes. LOL.

Some people really didn't feel the change in pace and tone worked well. Totally fair. I liked it as a first taste of Porsche coming to terms with his situation and a first glimpse of dynamics among the bodyguards. But I can see how others might find the change jarring. Hopefully episode 3 will be better for you.

i'm literally obsessed with this series. i need ep 3 asap.
I find myself curious about when we're going to get more action scenes. But I can't say I'm obsessed. I tend to obsess more over shows with healthy emotional bonds and I am not sure how much of that the show will even entail. But I'm certainly enjoying KP so far, on its own merits. Episode 3 needs another extra-organization throw down.

Omg i didn't expect Porsche to be this dramatic from the novel but i love it. And the way he bit Kinn on the neck…
Porsche's fight scenes are the shit! I loved them. Honestly, I adore action stuff anyway. And when Their fight was dirty too, I was very pleased!

What really got me cheering though, was the fight club stuff. That's my juice! LOL! The prospect of more good fight scenes with Porsche has me way more excited than the idea of him boning (or getting boned).

Recently I saw a lot of people make comments about the age gap between chay and Kim, I'll speak from my own perspective…
Frankly, people should have gotten salty over a 15 year old being in a film where there was a kiss with someone that much older, no matter how careful off screen conduct was monitored. I'm sure your acting was fine, but realistically there is nothing any 15 year old can bring to any role that couldn't have been found in an 18 year old actress.

The days of people being permissive about an underage Brooke Shields playing a prostitute are long, long over.

There is nothing wrong with any society setting a standard where youth actors are exempt from sexualized scenes with adult actors. Even back in 1984 in the filming of the original Karate Kid, Ralf Machio who was 28 at the time was only allowed very limited bodily contact with Elisabeth Shue during their scenes because she was only 17 at the time of filming. This is not a new idea.

So yes, it's perfectly cool for some of us to be very concerned and very vocal at the prospect of any sexualized contact, including kissing, between Barcode and Jeff. Especially considering this is an 18+ drama and he won't even be 18 until well after it's already concluded airing.
