LY is a better person from knowing SS. He has learned from her how to speak up for himself .

I feel the same way about YS.

If she loves SS, she sure has a weird way of showing or feeling love right? . Her sidelong glances at SS are always disapproving with so much yelling and accusations. And then she is so gentle and loving towards Yang2. The only way I can reconcile her actions is, yes maybe she loves SS but on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being most loving, SS gets 1 and YY gets 10.

Big spoiler: my understanding is the father he knows (Ling Yi) is not his biological father. The woman who is crazy is actually his aunt ( biological father’s sister) but this has not been revealed yet in the drama. She switched him with her dead son when his biological father was killed) by her husband.

In the novel, it happens at the very end because they break up and then get back together again

I agree with you. I am a mother too. SS’s mother is way harsh, not an once of kindness towards her daughter and not taking responsibility in a good way for abandoning her child in the first place. It’s her way or the highway and why is she showing such blatant preference for Yang2 in front of everyone? The woman has no sense or her need for domination overwhelms her?

She is only 15, bullied ( you could say tortured) all her life. Even LBY told her when riding a horse, you have to show who’s in charge and same in life. Bullies bully those who are weak and will continue to do so unless you take a stand though that might cost you. Some of her actions are dangerous like the bridge but she did think it through ( Grandma Wan said she put up dangerous bridge’ signs so they won’t be accused) and she did get punished severely. Her mother didn’t even explain why her actions are dangerous for her family. I think strong personalities like SS’s need a different approach. As a rebellious teenager myself, the more my parents disagreed, the more rebellious I am. Parenting is difficult but that doesn’t make SS’s mother right. But in the old days, they tend to beat their children a lot. I remember in my childhood days every family has at least one cane to cane their naughty children. The thinner and more flexible the cane, the more painful when whipped.

I think SS thinks she can handle Lou family because her mother is like that - bully her all the time, so in her mind, what’s the difference? She will just have to deal with it and A Yao is so good to her. She and A Yao also have escape plan whether it is feasible or not.

I definitely. Old Madam Wan knew LBY had saved the family and that is why she silently thanked LBY and gave her son a beating. She knew it was not QiQi in the room that day. LBY had also told SS if she got the map, she would save both families from execution when they were under the bridge. That is why SS disguised herself as QiQi and wnt into Old Madam Wan’s room.

Those are my feelings too. In my own very large extended family, I have seen this happen where some cousins are just unloved by their parents when their siblings have everything and sadly everybody knows it. It’s even gossiped about- so and so is just so unloved by aunt so and so. Perhaps that cousin is not very good with studies or perhaps he is not a smooth talker with mum or not obedient but these are children with different needs and personalities. I know Chinese parents prefer obedient children. I hear this a lot. So and so is so obedient (tin Hua in Chinese). And in many families, boys are preferred over girls and even though you could say sons and daughters are treated well, sons have preferential treatment.. This drama, I think highlights some of those emotions, behaviors and treatment of daughters, it is very real. For those who have not encountered such behaviors, it’s almost unbelievable. That’s why I abhor this type of behavior in SS’s mum.

Yes, makes her very unlikeable when She does not stick up for her cousin when she herself had a very good childhood.

SS is also worried that her family would get implicated through family association by great uncle’s criminal acts. She is very smart and can quickly put 2 and 2 together so that is why she gave LBY clues. She is also patriotic since her parents are generals and fought in the battlefields for 15 years.

I read somewhere that YS and SS are most alike but I don’t see this so far except both likes to have the last word. I think SS and LBY are more alike because:
1) Both have traumatic childhoods
2) both are very loyal and patriotic
3) both have military background/family
4) both are ‘an eye for an eye’ people
5) both are very passionate
6) both will do anything for the people they love
7) both are action oriented. SS likes to build things, LBY wields his weapons.
8) Both are pragmatic people and very eloquent though LBY is quieter but when he opens his mouth, everybody listens.
9) both are highly intelligent.

It’s just that she is SO passive and ofcourse eager to please SS’s mother even though she is the blatantly the favored one and she knows it as she said so in the desk incident. She also had a good childhood with her maternal aunt and grandpa and knew her mother tortured SS. It just gives a very poor image of her. Notice there are times , she doesn’t even say anything when SS’s mother praises her and criticizes SS. Example is when SS’s mum was ‘sick’ and SS offered to take over from Yang2 in taking care of mum but Mum says she wants Yang2 because she is better than SS etc. Yang2 is silent. Poor SS just leaves the room. Contrast that with QiQi . When her dad, General Wan was so effusive with his praise of SS and critiques her, QIQi asked good naturedly if her father was trying to drive a wedge between them. yang2 is not bad but her behavior or lack of supporting SS makes people like me wonder. I think ultimately, SS’s mum is doing a disservice to Yang2 making her into a doormat for her in laws. She is already so passive and mum is amplifying that times 2. Mum loves obedient children. Chinese word for it is ‘Tin Hua’.

If just comparing these 2 only, I like A Yao better than YS too. Maybe YS will improve but I didn’t have a good initial impression of him because clearly he is attracted to CSS but thinks she is beneath him and ofcourse his teacher just annoys me no end.
