You're right, especially at the beginning, there are way too many characters, and I find it a mess as the storytelling tries to include a lot of stuff from all the characters and fails. This also prevents and delays the introduction of the main characters.
Now I was looking at screenwriters, and I think I found the culprit. I'll try this drama a bit more, but I don't have hope, one of the screenwriter's dramas are usually quite a mess till the last episode. But she is not listed on the next Fox Spirit, so I'm happy. Will write again if I continue past 6, thanks :D

A couple of episodes in, and this is so bad that I'm contemplating whether I should drop it. It only has big-name actors in it( I know they were not as popular when this was filmed, but they were still big names with hit dramas). Did they forget to hire a screenwriter after blowing all the money on the actors?
Shouldn't dramas make you sympathise with characters and put a solid story in just a few episodes? I find no character appealing, and don't root for any of them... story is whatever(how it's portrayed in the drama--on the main material, I know people love it).
Does the story get better? Or should I drop it cause it is not my cup of tea? I was really hyped up for the next Fox Spirit Matchmaker, but both this and the previous one are disappointing :(

Gvg is a handsome actor and already played in good roles before, XL was great in previous side character roles, especially since I loved her last drama--kill my sins, so I was expecting to really like this drama. I have watched a lot of low-budget dramas, I even watched a couple of 2mins ones as their story were interesting, so low budget is not a deal breaker for me. still, I was disappointed by this. IDK if I should hold on a bit, in case it will get better......💔

No, I'm not talking "FL's silly anger." Even at the halfway mark of the drama, he thought of her as just a pawn and how to punish her. I haven't read the novel AYTO, so I don't know if he was morally bad in the book, too, but both AYTO and NOF MLs are far worse than the book LuJiaxue. I wouldn't want any of my friends or family to date similar men, or even I would try to intervene or report them for the abuse they made. I haven't watched today's episodes so idk they portrayed LJX in a worse light today but till yesterday's episodes event they could easily change the MLs and most would start rooting for him. If they have adapted the book completely, you would see LSY as the reason they tell the kids to speak with a trusted adult if someone acts improperly.

note: I wouldn't suggest dating men like Luo ShenYuan or Lu Jiaxue as well

You are right, I'm also a book reader and both of the male leads were bright red characters. But in the end of the book you really understand how LJX loves Yinning and feel sad for the ending he gets. Many down here saying you are wrong that they would not root for LJX if the roles flipped and he is the main character are being dishonest. Most of the people here watched Love of Nirvana and Are You The One and they are more than okay with the MLs from them but LJX is the worst one?

yeah the drama is really white washed version of the novel, kinda feels like a fanfiction of novel? There is many dramas with reincarnation, still they choose to completely throw away reincarnation troop in the drama. Also they made Shenyuan more upright and Lu JiaXue the only red flag. In novel both were grey characters. I love the drama but after reading the novel some of the changes they made makes the drama a totally different story. The drama is great but the book was better. For not getting upset over the changes, maybe finish the book after finishing the drama?

yeah they changed a lot, like a lot from the book, neither Cheng Lang or Lin Mao is interested in her in the drama . Also they made ShenYuan character less shitty/conspiraring so I dont think they will follow the same path. probably they will first fall in love in the drama. In novel when they're married Yinning still saw her as 3rd brother....
