Good god the comment section gets worse as I read and I've felt like I went on a critical analysis spree.
Let me make simple. I started this yesterday and finished ep 8. It was frustrating at times but it was entertaining. Kept my interest.
And now after this exhausting comments section I am off to prepare for the Chinese New Year and get my kids red envelopes from the bank. I live overseas and we don't have all the options of having easy access to all the stuff for the Lunar New Year.
So happy new year everyone. And enjoy the reunion dinner. I envy those of you who have this option because for us who live in countries where its not a big deal... ordinary life goes on and I have kids to bring for surf lifesaving training. I would so rather have a Chinese hot pot dinner with the seafood and meat balls.
So I am actually nostalgically enjoying it as my dad has passed away and my mother is overseas and my sister is in the US. So this drama and the family; flawed or not- hits the right notes. Lunar New Year is 15 days long. Family might be frustrating and confining.... but have to say watching a big bickering family for the next 2 weeks is perfectly fine by me.
I thought a little about it and I think it's because they are too human in their awfulness. Too realistic and…
The thing is right is that it was the norm to have men who cheated then marry them in as concubines. Domestic violence existed then and it exists now. Or see someone they wanted then marry them.
Selfish self centred men existed throughout the ages. I am not limiting it to men its the same with women.
Women who marry for status did then and do now.
So this irrational hate for the male leads in this drama isn't quite logical. Its logical to hate these sort of traits yes. Is this the worst male characters in dramas? Heck no.
Do people think women in those olden days are romantics? If there is no male head of the household I would be looking for stability or status or protection too. Love does not trump reality.
And cheating? Gosh... stop applying real life to the ideal ideas of pure love. Men and women have cheated through the ages. Its just that men had the options of wives and concubines. And before people go " ewww... " my grandad lived in the generation where it was legal to have multiple wives and he did. 4 of them and yes he was rich? Was he a randy old fart? Yes he was since 4th grandmother was supposedly very young. My grandmother was also young and accomplished. The point of the matter is.... it did happen. I don't normally mention on MDL that I am ethinically Chinese so understand all these filial piety concept etc. And my whole extended family of siblings half aunts/ uncles and adopted uncles/aunties all got along thank you very much. Yes the properties were divided the males amongst a la Cdrama style. The females got dowries.
So the dramas are not that far off reality. So all these pure love for only 1 partner forever and forever was not the norm back then. Apply the standards and this drama is perfectly fine.
The comments section here? Definitely over the top criticising it.
idk about character development but we definitely saw his character regress today lmao
Isn't that the point? There is no room for improvement if the man is perfect from the word go?
And 5 sisters without male protection in those days? I actually think its nice to have pragmatic leads and not those thinking love is the be all and end all in those days? They don't think love is important. Love doesn't put food on the table and kept the household safe did it? By the way I am ok with characters whose only flaws are being filial to the mother rather than tbose petulant spoilt brats being redeemed. Or actual stupid characters who make foolish decisions. Those dramas are hard to watch.
I think it’s bc this was presented as a feel good romcom but instead none of the mls are up to standard
Feel good?
Doesn't it feel good? The sibling relationships are close.
The 2 cousins are close.
The histrionic mothers are common. At least the children don't hate the parents.
I literally can't see it unless its thr violence? The worst thing so far has been the pretence post the kidnap rescue. That was idiotic and callous. As someone who has watched Pride and Prejudice over 20 times- the series and movie- and the book; I am not fully committed to say it gives me the same vibes. I mean if it followed the book then the 5th sister is due to marry an actual wastrel. The 5 sisters are shown to be happy in the last scene.
There are so many good looking male actors in this casting. Surely no one sane expects 5 perfect devoted male leads in one drama did they? Which Cdrama had ever seen such delusional writing? Angst drives ratings upward as we all know.
That drama logic of perfection vs flawed characters doesn't fly. Its not utter perfection as dramas goes but it is entertaining. Its 8 episodes of a 36 episode drama.
I have no idea what everyone is on about. By the way, I am just watching. I've just done ep 1-8 in one hit yesterday. I am kicking myself as I should have waited till after ep 15 because I'm now waiting for the wedding.
Currently the only person irritating me is actually the 3rd sister but then the actual character in Pride and Prejudice did irritate in the book until they all settled and mellowed down at the end. I did like the book.
Ok. On further thoughts I think the mother irritated me more. See? All the negative thoughts. This is actually more entertaining then the dramas I've dropped in Nov- Dec. I've not started and dropped quite a few.
I mean the emotions are running high and I can't figure out why?
There is no situation or character that hasn't appeared in other dramas but people seem so personally offended. Am I missing something? There have been as much violence in other dramas. The mothers are not the worst mothers. There's hardly any concubines.
The only jarring notes have been the young Emperor and the consort who looks 5- 10 years older.
My gosh the wait is torture. I am waiting for ep 32 to drop on viki. I already know the ending but wanted to watch it on my tv and not on the streaming sites on my phone or laptop.
I am feeling terribly bored as I have nothing to watch while waiting. I am waiting for more episodes in Perfect Match. I've finished Legend of the Dafeng. Still holding off Everlasting Longing or whatever its called. Plus dropped Blossoming Love and Moonlight Mystique.
I'm not sure about your comment. I think they made it a point to explain that the key is unique in the world but…
Hshaha. I have been reading spoilers from ep 6. I've stopped watching. I am now not even watching ep 12.
The main and only reason I'm watching it is because both main actors came from my 2 previous dramas. The male actor was the lead in a fairly nice romance. The female actor was a secondary couple in that Jung Hae- in drama. She had a nice romance but she has a quirky lopside smile. Her built, smooth skin and even those feminine looking hands were already implausible from episode 1.
Then looking for a missing key for a lost wooden plot just made my day. I don't think I've stopped laughing. You can't use a heavy rock in case there is something breakable inside. If there, are horses in this era/ which it has; then there must be a blacksmith with a metal implement which you can smash the box with.
So we still have a missing box with a solution. Hang the key. It will require a blacksmith and its too intricately made but heck care authenticity; there is a 5 star hotel in the plot.
We have the girl role playing character. And an obvious Hanyang version of a 5 star hotel which is and always been implausible.
This whole drama has been full of plotholes anyway.
So the writer didn't do any worse than what they started with in the beginning. A fusion sageuk. So they had a license to ruin everything. And they have. Even the plot is not gripping anyway
My good friend in dear old USA taught in a high school like this..students coming back from Rikers, teachers getting…
Ergh. My kids will be going to high school next year and I'm already worried. There is bullying everywhere these days but my issue will be recreational drug use.
Its a good drama so far but have to admit its alarming as a parent.
Okay but what in the ghetto? Fortunately the setting ain’t America, some shotguns would have already killed…
Er you want to read up actual news articles about how bullies bully in S Korea?
You cannot discount another's traumas just because people don't have easy access to guns in South Korea.
Ghetto? Who's definition and which cities?
Realistic? Well considering there is CCTV everywhere in SK I presume the fight will be seen or reported to the police. Plus read up about personal liability laws in Korea and how people settle crimes.
I am not saying S Korea is crime- ridden but on the other hand real life can be worse even without guns. Did you read about how some recruits died recently because of bullying? People die and get killed or commit su icide without the use of weapons. I watch Kdramas but I also read or listen to the news.
You're watching a Kdrama which means you use the Korean standard.
I also think you should watch some actual videos about what South Korea is like vs what's on Kdramas.
There are a lot of very well built 15- 16 year olds in this school.
They are supposed to be 15- 16 year olds in 10th grade right?
I must scroll through the comments to see what the novel is about. Its only 10 episodes. With all that violence there isn't much time to see how it all pans out.
I am wondering what I'm watching since I normally don't or won't watch school violence dramas especially since its showing assault on women and in this case by teenagers.
Let me comment instead on the child actors. My goodness how good are they? They aren't just child actors; they are excellent actors and really delivered their roles.
You know how it is in some T or Cdramas where they MAKE the actors be cutesy or they look cute? But they behave like child actors role playing?
Not here though. Byeol and Seo Jun are 2 adorable 7 year olds. That's their characters. I don't know who the child behind the character. Then the lawyer's kid? I actually shed tears for him.
How old are these children? There is no awkwardness or a wrong expression. They don't do the dead fish eyes acting like you see some young actors or even old actors do. They literally embody the characters they are potraying.
I know one child actor from previous dramas who has graduated into adult roles. Like the actor in Castaway Diva; Moon Woo Jin.
The child actors are just that good and can hold their own with the adults.
The whole stoey is already fantastic as in the imaginary world. When you're in it- I am happy to follow that world's rules.
However what seemed to bug me is the ending room. Which modern world's gaming establishment can afford a huge skylight, tall ceilings and that huge room? Now that was literally the only jarring note in 40 episodes. That room is not realistic. No normal business can afford to either rent or build something like this in the middle of the city. And we all know how big China's cities are.
He is under a guest role. Isn't she a widow with 5 daughters? The dad can't be alive then can he? Besides the mother is shown in the poster without a male beside her.
I don't think this drama will take the prize for script writing but its watchable which is what I care most about. It has a huge talented cast.
Let me make simple. I started this yesterday and finished ep 8. It was frustrating at times but it was entertaining. Kept my interest.

Not in her restaurant. Not in his tea house. Not in an open aired noodle place. He's too well known.
So yeah. That is me applying logic. The only time would be at night. In the back alley and I don't see that happening.
And 5 sisters without male protection in those days? I actually think its nice to have pragmatic leads and not those thinking love is the be all and end all in those days? They don't think love is important. Love doesn't put food on the table and kept the household safe did it?

Not to mention they actually go to military service as well. So no.... not all Kdramas rise and set with romance.
You cannot discount another's traumas just because people don't have easy access to guns in South Korea.
