Totally agree. At the very least, he should have told her that he was going to have dinner with Yilia. It's so weird to find that out from someone else when you guys work in the same company. He really couldn't give what she needed emotionally and didn't even understand why he needed to, so that break-up was more than necessary for both of them to grow. Even in the book, she admits/ sort of implies that she knew that a break-up was coming. She was hurting too much, and though she had faults too, he just couldn't give her comfort when she needed it most. He just needed to hug her and let her cry it out, but he froze up and, even worse, didn't shut up when it mattered the most. Just had to give her a lecture.

He did get hurt in the novel. But it was just a small injury. I think his arm just swelled up a bit.

They end up breaking up over it and their relationship becomes better when he changes that or at least, improves it.

I'd say that his character development is more obvious because he has harsher flaws than she does. The change he needs to make is kind of big, because it's the way he talks, which is a personality feature. If he talked better, if his speech didn't make her feel so small, I think she wouldn't have this problem in the first place, but that's probably an overly simplistic way to look at it

this girl… she feels this relationship can end at any moment. she doesn’t feel like they’re on the same footing so she’s insecure about it and puts this distance between then because if he leaves her, she needs to be able to survive such a breakup. it’s that type of thing
