Im about to start this one then I saw the ratings 👀. Is really the second half that bad?
the second half is not bad at all. it really show the youngster’s characters as adult, their attitudes and how they approach life, while maintaining their friendship dynamic. I actually love the second part, as it’s not doom and gloom like the first half. the first half - everyone was stressed about money! a lot of conflicts because of money n uncertainty. the second half is more about how they are stressed at work, but they are finding ways to work things out positively.
The poster of only four of the main characters without SiYi is the same poster on iQiYi. I guess they left her…
I think SiYi left as abruptly as she came. the photo of the 4 was their final day of high school, which was after SiYi has left. and while SiYi is an important friend, she was only with them for 7yrs. comparing to her, these guys have been together since birth/3yo, and continue to be involved in each other’s life right now, which is close to 30yo. That’s practically a life time. and even though Chen Rui has more screen times than SiYi, he’s also not included in the photo lol. and considering he’s taking care of grandpa Zhou more than HaiKou lol! I feel sorry for Chen Rui 😖 he likes the canal, gentle, always there and always being left behind 😭every time I saw him onscreen, I just feel sad and pity for him 😖
despite him being my fave, xingchi’s been annoying these eps 😭 boy’s got his heart in the right place but…

I love the parents, each of them has their own flaws, but each of them is nice, and warm, and lovely in their own way. they are the type of ppl, who as your neighbours, exhibit flaws but you are willing to look pass it because you know deep down they are decent ppl (apart from XC’s dad, I’m still a bit mixed about him… I guess just make sure he stay clear of alcohol and work stress! 😅)

applaud the hidden theme this show is presenting without pissing off the CCP lol. so we all know China is having a bit of problem with ppl finding partners due to the 1 child policy, many guys are having a hard time finding a girl, and the girl would demand ridiculous “items” before considering be with you. now we know why out of all of them, HaiKou has a gf. because his family is wealthy, and he’s decent looking, and he’s smart. she picked him because he has the most potential (but mainly because his family is “wealthy”). but as usual, once you only have money in your mind, you will kick the poorer one out to welcome the richer one!
so HaiKou is right: being poor is the original sin!

just want to add my personal experience regarding the conversation HaiKou’s dad had with Liang regarding moving the restaurant to the city: we used to have a Turkish restaurant in our apartment complex, because it was surrounded by tree and waterfalls (there were like 4-5 wall waterfalls - so while it’s not big, it gave enough cooling effect combine with the trees, and the lovely sound of waterfalls is just charming) that it feels like it is in an oasis. I love going to that restaurant because of the nice breeze, the bustling atmosphere (we were right next to the busy street so always full of cars and walking people). they decided to move to a new place, just 10mins walk down the road from us, and they haven’t recovered since. there was no tree, no breeze, and while the complex they moved into has much better crowds due to having a big supermarket there, but because they tucked away in a corner, that it always feel quiet and sad.
so what I’m trying to say is: it’s true that for a lot of old restaurants, ppl go there for not just the good food, but also the experience, if you can keep the same experience years and years, it’s a valuable asset to have.
The romance in this drama just does nothing for me. I don't care if they knew each other since they were in diapers…
in this setting though, it’s understandable. the problem is the majority of the idol dramas have this trope lol. blame those idol dramas for not breaking the mould lol! they have so much potential but always choose the childhood trope! (example why for this drama, this is ok: FH asked her mom if she settled for her dad just because he’s there. and her mom said: so what if she settled for him just because he’s there. demonstrating that by and large, these lower class people has very simple thinking. they don’t think or feel the need to experience the world/try to date someone out there lol. so the fact that FH even asked that, show she constantly thinks about it, about whether it’s silly of her to just love WH because he’s there).

well, this type of drama has 3 possible ending: WH + FH (with cancer being cured) = HE FH (with cancer not cured) = OE with gloomy outlook, SiYi and WH can’t be together FH die, SiYi n WH together 😅
Why ?? give her cancer after all what she endured just when she began to be happy and to fulfil her dreamdon't…
considering they have been eating food from the canal, and it was at the time where they just built those factories. whatever waste those factories pumped out, that killed most marine life in the canal, would probably have some health effects. if none of them has cancer, that would be a surprise lol.
