I feel like this was THE definition of a choose your own adventure ending. They said "words"... they "hugged"... those words could mean SOOOOO many things but ultimately meant nothing because they just hugged and END.
Here, I'll turn that "happy ending" into a "sad ending" with just what we saw... she says the lines about starting over and always being entangled in love and hate... basically her saying that she's always going to hate him when he's around (the countryside) but the minute he goes back to work (the manor) she'll pine after him and lose all autonomy begging him to come home soon. But they will "start over" because she's realized that the most she can ask for is being in the country so might as well deal with him for the rest of her life... 🤣
The funniest part was that bird at the end "being set free" but she's ABSOLUTELY not set free, she just chose to move to a different cage and the door is left open for an hour a day even if the room is still locked.

Basically you have to be paying a LOT of attention to the details in this show, especially by the end episodes. Personally I figured out about 80% of what was going on by the end and had to bounce back and forth with the commenter Jelena below to grasp the last bit since she's better at catching details usually and some things are literally explained in only a single line of dialog 😅

I'm not sure where you're at but I will say that there seems to be a nuance to WHY they are painting the mother in a bad light. The father is dead so he can't really have any additional scenes that would prove how the ML and FL currently feel about him in relation to the scenes happening, but there was that one scene where the ML basically let's his disdain for his father known when speaking to his mother...
Where it is saying SHE is wrong, other than criminal actions, is that as he was growing up she refused to show him ANY kindness no matter how much he wanted a loving mother and then later pushed her own actions onto him at a young age, forcing both him and the FL to start TRULY drifting apart as the misunderstanding began. By the time the truth has come to light it is too little too late for the FL, too much fear and hatred has been simmering inside her for too long and so yes, she TOO blames the mother because she had options (they weren't GOOD options but they were still there, the FL is trying to escape after all while the mother just sat there and became bitter and hateful...).
