I really appreciate that Ming Lan remained true to her smart, and strong willed character. So many times the females in dramas start off strong and smart but by the end they're frustrating and just make dumb decisions that make it hard to finish the series. Loved Ming Lan. More like this please! ;-)
coming here from Love By Chance just so I can have some closure with Tin & Can. The actors are adorable together, & even though they are portraying different characters, the fact that they ended up together was enough for me to sit through this. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered :-/
This was completely worth the 70 episode count! BUT, I will say that because it was so long I felt that some story lines went on for a bit too long. After 50+ eps, did we really need Concubine Shun too? meh... And unless I was too busy fan-girling over Xu Kai, I completely missed when Fu Heng and Ying Luo came to an understanding and REALLY left their romance in the past enough that Fu Heng was the one who convinced her back into the palace once she was out. ( At that point I knew they weren't going to be together, but it felt kinda weird seeing HIM convince her to go back to the Emperor. Who I hate for stealing Ying Luo from Fu Heng in the 1st place. Never quite got over that :-(
I don't know what it is, but by the time I get to the 2nd season of BL series I've fallen completely out of love with the main couple and just want to see the second leads. As far as I was concerned Fuse and Tee's story was as good as over at the end of the 1st season and Book and Frame stole the show in season 2! They were the only reason I stayed til the end. Their chemistry was Ah-MAZ-ING!
I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would based on reviews, but I gave it a chance. If this series were not compared to Scarlet Heart (C-or Kdrama) I think it would be ranked higher: its a lighter feel with a much more satisfying ending IMHO. If you're coming w/Scarlet Heart expectations don't bother. It will not compare and you'll think its a complete waste. But on its own merits this is an enjoyable and fulfilling watch. about a strong-willed girl who refuses to compromise.
Everything everyone is saying is true: the chemistry between the leads was exceptional and the overall plot was solid BUT THE EDITING!!! Putting the climax of the episode at the beginning, like a preview, and then never addressing it again? Ugh! If not for the way it was edited I'm sure the drama would be comfortably sitting at a 9 on MDL. The Love to hate to love roller-coaster was great and I ended up loving and feeling so sorry for Jiang Wu. Anyone else notice he was more or less what Zhao Yao was like in the beginning when she founded her sect with all that anger & hurt for being written of as evil just bc of her existence? So sad. Poor Jiang Wu just didn't have his female Mo Qing :'-( I did love the few moments between Zhao Yao and Jiang Wu. So sweet & gentle. Just wish the editing was better....& it could have been 10 eps less. BUT still worth the watch.
More I think ab the wasted potential of this drama the more mad I get. 1st 10 eps were amazing: fresh, unpredictable with a POV from a more wild/free culture than the usual palace/nobility culture usually found in historicals. But then they just HAD to resort to the amnesia trope. I'll admit to enjoying the usual misunderstandings & slow burn love/hate romance for the 1st few eps, but the amnesia plot line lasted for the remainder of the series. (Not needed for 30+ eps IMHO.) And it did become just another palace drama. And the amount of bickering between the 2 leads...It was cute in the beginning, and tolerable at the start of the amnesia, but the bickering is only cute bc we eventually get to see the couple's sweet loving side. The constant bickering just made this painfully frustrating. I will say that the way they handled Gu Jian's death was great. It was somehow satisfying, redemptive & sweet. Like he finally got the recognition for his love. Idk. oddly enough that was the only 'bright' spot towards the end for me. :-/
If there is any way a melo could infuse comedy into it over the course of 52 eps and still haave me crying and smiling at the end of it, I'm in! This was the most over-dramatic, cutest, funny, non-historical royal kdrama ever...and I loved every minute of it. And 3 cheers for great and appropriate character arcs. No one stays a victim for long, but no one is completely faultless either. More like this please! :-)
I don't care what other people say cause I love this drama. I enjoyed watching it from start to finish.Surely,…
I completely agree. Especially about the Emperor and Sunny: Yu Ra can have a "happy ending" why couldn't it have worked with these two and his adorable daughter. I tried REALLY hard to hate Lee Hyuk but they did such a good job of fleshing out his character and making you feel for him...I just couldn't do it! X-)
Solid BL series. Felt there could have been more focus on the side couples. I'm glad there will be a spinoff with Tin and Can because they deserve an ending: good, bad, or ugly but they have to give me SOMETHING right!?!
On the plus side, this series has something for everyone. On the down side, because it had so many elements it feels a bit scattered and doesn't really land any one genre solidly. Up until the last 10 eps. the series kept re-inventing itself with new characters and settings so it kept me interested, but the ultimate palace drama it ended on left me disappointed. I liked that this was a 'travel-back-in-time' drama that DID NOT revolve around the palace, but a group of bandits. That synopsis is true for the 1st half and the initial plot is engaging but I quickly became disillusioned with the complete blank slate for the 2nd half. I'd invested so much in characters that were killed off I really couldnt muster caring for new characters.. They do try to put cooking/food in wherever they can but it wasnt as prominent as I'd hoped. Palace power struggles, romantic misunderstandings, dont even get me started on my SLS for my poor Ding QI and an ending that felt SO rushed for having 56 eps... Ultimately this series suffers from having too many cooks in the kitchen!
I was hoping for more focus on the criminal underworld and the brotherhood/loyalty they kept referring to, but instead it was an overall sweet romantic comedy with a twinge of heartfelt instances. The drama really tries to pour on the sappy sibling love but it became eye-rollingly annoying. The cliches, funny side characters and not-so-life-threatening situations that bring our couples together are all out in full force. The episodes go by fast and, if nothing else, the chemistry between the main couples are reason enough to give it a try. By the end I was more into Tian Xing & Jing Xuan the most, but Mi Qi and Xiao Zhi were so cute I wish we got more of them!
I’d recommend this drama to anyone looking for a sweet slow-build romance with a solid crime plot and a lot of laughs along the way. I will say this: the kids are frustrating and problematic in the beginning, but they grow on you. And Ji Sub’s interactions with them are so adorable! A major highlight.
Really enjoyed this series. It realistically shows the positives and dark side of beauty standards in society without getting too preachy about it. The endings for the side characters left me wanting: I’m just saying, they could have been harsher with the “villains” and given happy endings to others besides the main characters. But that’s my preference...
