Trying to finish Immortal samsara maybe when I have the motivation, I watch another ongoing kdrama Big Mouth.Waiting…
I actually like tried to think of why though…. And I still couldn’t figure it out… it’s partly because the 2 leads are not as charming/visually perfect as the Eternal Love series……? I actually thought the storyline was acceptable though….. I don’t really know why I got so impatient…. And annoyed…. Aside from I’m not really a fan of the 2 leads, neither do I dislike them….. 🤔

Yea the difference was just too huge and also so abrupt…. And then it made me realise how amazing Eternal Love and Eternal Love of Dream is for being able to maintain things for 3 lifetimes/realms… lol I just took it for granted then coz those 2 were one of the first few C-dramas I watched….

I totally didn’t enjoy The Longest Day in Chang’an…. Probably just skip it…
Serious. Even I was like…. Why did everyone rate this thing so high… I mean yea, the cinematography and production quality is really high though, you can tell it’s super high budget. It’s closer to a movie…
But the whole thing in terms of flow and logic was like….. why….. did they have to do this…. Have you watched 24 the American series before? So basically 24 is successful partly because they don’t have like 50 important characters…. Like the important roles are kept to a minimum because it is meant to be a sequence of events occurring over 1 day only. Viewers were very engaged and invested in the ML following him across the entire series… this one I totally felt like I got conned coz I followed the MLs and in the end I got nothing…. The entire plot as much as it was surprising had to be explicitly and verbally revealed by some dude I don’t even really remember…. I had to go back to the older episodes to find him. 🤣

I haven’t watched this, I just finished Nirvana in Fire and also feel a little odd, maybe my expectations were too high… so I’m a little concerned on starting all these super political and heavy kinda series. I feel C-dramas still haven’t really nailed this genre yet. I’ve heard really good things about The Advisor’s Alliance though… 🤔 so just looking around now….

That one actually had a lot of action and was fast paced…. But like….. the whole plot was overly convoluted for no reason and the whole story-telling failed…. 130 characters and they tried to make everyone “important” forcefully…. In the end you just go like “?!?!?” And then they had to rely on a really random dude whom you probably struggle to recall who he is to recap the entire plot verbally for 15 minutes at the end……. I’m not even kidding…. And then I went “Ooooo….. right….. I see…. Wait, who is this guy again….. he looks familiar…. 🤔”

So the way the story was told wasn’t engaging like they didn’t give the viewers the opportunity to discover the plot themselves as the series progressed….

After it ended it just left me having a wot-on-planet-Earth-just-happened feeling……

Geez I’ve said this previously before when the series just aired but Dylan Wang can really act……. I mean there will be lotsa deduction in points with his original voice…. It is kinda high pitched…. Thus unsuitable for Moon Lord. But with the voice dubbing he really aced this role…

Title Nirvana in Fire Spoiler
Totally agree. I’m still watching and I feel the same. Agree that it was brilliantly written but I felt it was…
Like a super direct comparison would be the recently completed Love Like the Galaxy (although I don’t think it falls in the same category as NiF in terms of genre)… it’s very similar in the sense of the whole revenge plot and the ML was also super extreme when it came to revenge coz it was such an unforgivable crime….

But I found it so smart (and also meaningful) that at the end, the FL actually showed how for the same problem there is always another solution, you don’t have to like abandon everyone and flipping jump off a cliff just because you only trust yourself and you believe there is only one solution…. There is always more than one smart person around you regardless of whether the person is good, evil or in-between…. One might jump off the cliff at 15 or even 20… but being so adamant when you are already 30 yrs old…. It’s is quite…. Ridiculous unless depressed or ill.

Hence I can understand Mei Chang Su but at the same time also wonder why it was a hit/phenomenon…… I have no idea wot I’ve learnt after watching it, nor do I find it entertaining or enjoyable… Biographies exist for a reason and not everyone should write a biography….

I finished it….. it was….. good? Maybe because I set my expectations too high because there are like roughly 5 C-dramas with rating 9 and above on MDL and just all the hype surrounding this drama…. I expected more.

Defo don’t regret watching it…. But then……. I found it to be closer to a 8.5 for me. The plot was definitely very logical though, defo very smart. Even the whole poison thing/theory was very believable.

I still think part of the reason is coz it’s relatively dated… it’s almost 10 yrs ago. Think it’s a mixture of the cast/acting/characters, how the story was told, wardrobe, cinematography etc… the right way to put it is something is amiss and it isn’t exactly related to the plot. Also, after completing it you don’t feel particularly satisfied, just “wow, he is very smart, and how sad…. because the 2 princes weren’t even worthy opponents, they were kinda idiotic if you actually think about it…. The people behind/supporting them weren’t exactly geniuses as well”

So the series shouldn’t be called LangYaBang… should just be called Mei Chang Su…. Coz it was almost entirely about him, him being sad and kinda the only one who was smart. Which was partially why the whole plot was really off-balance. Such an intricate revenge plan for a bunch of….. evil idiots? =.= okay…. Fine…… and he was so paranoid and depressed that he only wanted to do it alone….. for sure the series should be called Mei Chang Su instead of Nirvana in Fire.

Joy of Life made it more believable/realistic in the sense that nearly everyone is a formidable opponent, even minor characters… at least have half a brain. Like there is some form of balance to it partly due to numerous multifaceted characters.

Back in 2015 I think it was probably still acceptable that the hero/protagonist is so much more superior versus everyone else (so much so that I don’t find anyone notable aside from Mei Chang Su, how sad is that…. Well maybe Banruo still worth mentioning) but all the developments in the past few yrs can be observed in the plots of various TV series released esp in China…. The gap between the characters are no longer so blindingly apparent which is closer to how society is today I spse…. there isn’t usually only one smart or charming guy in the room…. 🙄

But everything sits better if you imagine ancient times, in a backward nation which is exactly the story’s setting. I reckon back in the day it probably is the case whereby it usually is only one smart person in the room.

Conclusion: while the whole plot was logical and editing was fine, I truly question if it was all necessary…. Think a lot of it was overplayed because there was no real sparring throughout the drama. If I was the ML I would be depressed too…. There was no smart exchanges of chess moves/schemes… just a very smart plot all carried out by one lonely and sad man mostly because he was ill (I don’t blame him, I probably would do the same if I went through the same thing). I like minds games, schemes, thrillers etc but like it takes two to tango and even takes 2 people to play chess…. Not me, myself and I… Nearly all of the NiF’s characters lacked depth, the whole plot as much as it was brilliant was really monotonous… Thus I can relate to why some people commented that this series was boring… it’s basically just waiting for the ML to execute and unfold his super intricate plan with no one matching up to him nor worthy of becoming his ally… so damn sad… and of course it isn’t enjoyable to watch…. After the whole thing ended I just thought “Poor dude…… luckily they were all subpar and you are smart, otherwise you would be even more pitiful…”

This really is a slow burner but there are so many hidden hints here and there. Plus the suspense is driving me…
This series is super interesting…. Very surprising… have to admit that casting is done well esp the Zhao family!
