Geez I’ve said this previously before when the series just aired but Dylan Wang can really act……. I mean there will be lotsa deduction in points with his original voice…. It is kinda high pitched…. Thus unsuitable for Moon Lord. But with the voice dubbing he really aced this role…
Totally agree. I’m still watching and I feel the same. Agree that it was brilliantly written but I felt it was…
Like a super direct comparison would be the recently completed Love Like the Galaxy (although I don’t think it falls in the same category as NiF in terms of genre)… it’s very similar in the sense of the whole revenge plot and the ML was also super extreme when it came to revenge coz it was such an unforgivable crime….
But I found it so smart (and also meaningful) that at the end, the FL actually showed how for the same problem there is always another solution, you don’t have to like abandon everyone and flipping jump off a cliff just because you only trust yourself and you believe there is only one solution…. There is always more than one smart person around you regardless of whether the person is good, evil or in-between…. One might jump off the cliff at 15 or even 20… but being so adamant when you are already 30 yrs old…. It’s is quite…. Ridiculous unless depressed or ill.
Hence I can understand Mei Chang Su but at the same time also wonder why it was a hit/phenomenon…… I have no idea wot I’ve learnt after watching it, nor do I find it entertaining or enjoyable… Biographies exist for a reason and not everyone should write a biography….

I finished it….. it was….. good? Maybe because I set my expectations too high because there are like roughly 5 C-dramas with rating 9 and above on MDL and just all the hype surrounding this drama…. I expected more.
Defo don’t regret watching it…. But then……. I found it to be closer to a 8.5 for me. The plot was definitely very logical though, defo very smart. Even the whole poison thing/theory was very believable.
I still think part of the reason is coz it’s relatively dated… it’s almost 10 yrs ago. Think it’s a mixture of the cast/acting/characters, how the story was told, wardrobe, cinematography etc… the right way to put it is something is amiss and it isn’t exactly related to the plot. Also, after completing it you don’t feel particularly satisfied, just “wow, he is very smart, and how sad…. because the 2 princes weren’t even worthy opponents, they were kinda idiotic if you actually think about it…. The people behind/supporting them weren’t exactly geniuses as well”
So the series shouldn’t be called LangYaBang… should just be called Mei Chang Su…. Coz it was almost entirely about him, him being sad and kinda the only one who was smart. Which was partially why the whole plot was really off-balance. Such an intricate revenge plan for a bunch of….. evil idiots? =.= okay…. Fine…… and he was so paranoid and depressed that he only wanted to do it alone….. for sure the series should be called Mei Chang Su instead of Nirvana in Fire.
Joy of Life made it more believable/realistic in the sense that nearly everyone is a formidable opponent, even minor characters… at least have half a brain. Like there is some form of balance to it partly due to numerous multifaceted characters.
Back in 2015 I think it was probably still acceptable that the hero/protagonist is so much more superior versus everyone else (so much so that I don’t find anyone notable aside from Mei Chang Su, how sad is that…. Well maybe Banruo still worth mentioning) but all the developments in the past few yrs can be observed in the plots of various TV series released esp in China…. The gap between the characters are no longer so blindingly apparent which is closer to how society is today I spse…. there isn’t usually only one smart or charming guy in the room…. 🙄
But everything sits better if you imagine ancient times, in a backward nation which is exactly the story’s setting. I reckon back in the day it probably is the case whereby it usually is only one smart person in the room.
Conclusion: while the whole plot was logical and editing was fine, I truly question if it was all necessary…. Think a lot of it was overplayed because there was no real sparring throughout the drama. If I was the ML I would be depressed too…. There was no smart exchanges of chess moves/schemes… just a very smart plot all carried out by one lonely and sad man mostly because he was ill (I don’t blame him, I probably would do the same if I went through the same thing). I like minds games, schemes, thrillers etc but like it takes two to tango and even takes 2 people to play chess…. Not me, myself and I… Nearly all of the NiF’s characters lacked depth, the whole plot as much as it was brilliant was really monotonous… Thus I can relate to why some people commented that this series was boring… it’s basically just waiting for the ML to execute and unfold his super intricate plan with no one matching up to him nor worthy of becoming his ally… so damn sad… and of course it isn’t enjoyable to watch…. After the whole thing ended I just thought “Poor dude…… luckily they were all subpar and you are smart, otherwise you would be even more pitiful…”
It took me the whole two months just to finish this drama 😃. As the rating is so high, I assumed this drama…
Totally agree. I’m still watching and I feel the same. Agree that it was brilliantly written but I felt it was overrated…. I reckon it’s coz it is kinda dated… so it lost out on some bits like the drama set, costumes, CGI, cinematography etc….
I think they could have developed the romance arc with Mu Ni Huang better to give the series a better balance. Because in reality life isn’t only about politics or serious matters. It is usually driven by love, money, power….. or a sub-category of them.
Although not a direct comparison but I much prefer Joy of Life. I enjoyed it so much because I found it to be a very balanced series. And I felt the cast there, even side/minor characters did a terrific job. Like all the people in the palace etc. side cast here is above average too but then….. the 2 princes….. are a little weak as supporting characters. For example Banruo really outshined most of the side characters… but there is only one… or maybe a few.
There are 100+ actors…. Or characters…. Should have easily named 30-40 to carry the series.
Lol. Allen Ren is a bit small for Dilraba. Dilraba is kinda tall… I think both of them acted really well in…
Lol. Yea, even I remembered it… although I remembered the series being quite subpar… 🤣 but that’s partially coz Dilraba and Vin have compatible facial features. I.e like the deeper setting, more pronounced than the average Asian
I still enjoyed this so much more than Nirvana in Fire…. NIF was just….. I mean I don’t know if it’s coz it’s a much older production… just didn’t find it as enjoyable as JoL…. Probably I’m in the minority… JoL will forever be a 10 to me, NiF was a 8.5 with no rewatching value… This to me is a classic…
Leo Wu here was….. 🤣🤣🤣 never would I have guessed he would turn out looking like this today… Lol. The teen/kid version is far from wot one would call a handsome man… *sorry to say this, but hey.. he is one fine dashing man today. 🤓
But his kid version is so cute, he looks like a baby Keroppi. LOL!
I also found it confusing, but I believe she married Deng Kuan since they loved each other, and we see their child…
I Googled and found an important clue….. so all the kids ended up calling her “Gao Shigu”, they didn’t call her “Gao Shiniang”…. Netflix didn’t translate this precisely…
So it should be that she married Deng Kuan…. She and Chengling getting married is just weird man. I remembered the author didn’t write about this in the novel….
This is actually pretty good. The production quality is not bad too, I.e not too shabby or odd looking sets, costumes etc given the theme… the premise and outline is very interesting although I personally think it is a bit unrealistic given how China govt runs the country now. The Zhao family house is really nice…. Classy, which is surprising…. 🤣
Tony Yang’s character is super intriguing, and he has the perfect face for this kinda roles.. I’m so curious about wot happens to him in the end, I hope it isn’t typical like he either dies or goes to prison… 🙄
I do have reservations on whether the series can keep it up for 40 episodes…. Many things can go wrong esp given C-dramas’ track record for these kinda themes…. Watched the trailer, it looks a tad over the top towards the end…. Hurmmm 🤔

The war/battlefield scenes were really amazing though.

Shifu = Master
Shiniang = Master’s wife
Shigu = Master’s sister/Aunt/female version of Shifu
Yea, her father wanted.
