That's great. It always bothered me whenever the cast would smoke on-screen; it made me wonder if they were forced…
Most productions use fake cigarettes that are made of a herbal concoction. They're generally considered safer than nicotine ones, but using them too frequently can be damaging as well (so wouldnt be good for multiple takes or lots of scenes). Plus apparently they taste absolutely wretched.
Can't speak to whether the cast volunteer to use them or not. Although I'd imagine with the right framing of "not real cigarettes" and "safer" would convince many actors or make them feel pressured. Would be great to see more cgi cigarettes in the future. But of course, this takes careful budgeting for a good result.
Fun fact: "The short film "Veils" consisted only of the performers and staff members of the LGBTQ community, who understand and support LGBTQ people, and dealt with social issues sincerely and earnestly."
