Tbh, none really hit the spot of GBMP. With the looks, aesthetic, atmosphere, acting, etc - it’s kind of a perfect storm if that makes sense. Andunfortunately, even if a drama is well done, most dramas like this don’t give the FML enough presence to do what GBMP does. Xiao Feng is really one of the most beautiful AND most realised FMLs in recent years and that is kinda what I think sets GBMP apart from other dramas where usually the ML sucks up all the shine. Because both characters shine equally and are very plump in their own way, this pairing feels a lot “realer” than others.
I think Royal Nirvana is a good watch after this show. Mostly because it’s ML is basically the opposite of LCY and shows what probably would have happened if LCY wasn’t ruthless. Rise of the Phoenix is good for a better and more complicated portrayal of a black bellied prince. But both shows suffer from not giving the FLs enough presence. In fact, I was really disappointed in both shows for this reason because the FMLs in both shows are a lot more politically savvy than Xiao Feng and I wish they would lean into it more.Especially for their endings which felt really underwhelming.

They really cleaned up the male lead. He’s a bit bad for the first couple episodes but nowhere near the level of the book and there’s justification for it. Plus when he’s not very good, Jiman wants to have nothing to do with him, which is really refreshing in Cdramas. She just focuses on the 💰, which is amazing 😂. Usually girls try to change the man’s behaviour but Jiman is like ✌️.

If you like Xiao Ran, I’d definitely give RoaTF a look. It’s hilarious and is completely different from the book because they got rid of a lot of the unsavoury elements. It’s A LOT more wholesome and Jiman is an independent and wild character. She’s basically feral at the beginning 😂 It also opens with one PXR’s most legendary crying scenes. Like it’s so good that when stills of it were released, fans were losing it😂 Tbh, I still go back to rewatch because that scene has amazing acting.
