The answer for this drama is that content was cut so it could pass the censorship review. All Cdramas have to pass the censorship review in order to broadcast. Sometimes that means scenes get cut. In the case of SJFY, 11 episodes got cut so it could pass. Then it looks like Youku might have made further cuts before it aired.

The editing of the drama makes me so annoyed! Her acting is fine but now all of these people are coming to trash it.

It says Yu Xiuming was ill and would age normally so there’s a chance he passed away.

I think not understanding the backstory is leading to a lot of disappointment. Once I knew what went on, I kinda relaxed and just enjoyed the show.
I also want all the romance too!!! Most of the people watching this show are adults!!! Since when do we need to be shielded from kiss scenes!?
I held out so much hope for that princess carry😭. I’m also pissed about the scene they cut when Yezi was trying to get out of bed.

Oh, about that, from the very beginning Yu Xiuming says that she has no martial arts. That’s why she never fights, she doesn’t know how to. And I think her powers are Sky or astrology related but they seem to take a lot of time. Even her dad seemed to take a lot of time to summon his spell. It seems their powers are kind of useless in a fight or the battlefield.
I also think you may have to be trained to use the magic. When Yezi was trying not to become a slave she mentions not getting proper training but I don’t know if that meant with wielding powers.

As a PXR fan, I have such mixed views on this drama. Not about her performance because I’ve seen the BTS and can see her acting skills, but about why the editors cut her scenes so poorly and why production chose a voice actress that couldn’t keep up. If you use a scene meant for a different storyline of course the reaction will seem off. And according to Chinese fans there are several scenes were the dub and the mouth movements don’t match up also implying changes to what was originally acted. And for some strange reason her more powerful performances have been cut too. Just look at BTS between her and ZZT after the final showdown. In it she’s sobbing, holding Yi Wuyou’s face in grief but in the show it’s like a brief moment of sadness. As a fan watching those kind of cuts is maddening and I partially think that the tidbit releasing have been almost apologies to the actors for how the final cut has portrayed them.
But I still like Yezi. I think she’s a strong character even if the cuts basically gutted Yezi’s original personality into a mostly silly white sweet.
It’s made a mish-mash of things and has passer-by fans thinking she can’t act though I don’t know how this can be said after episode 21/22 which seems the most uncut showing of her character (and even there they cut her off when she was weeping over not be able to go back in time).
But Yezi is truly my favourite character out of PXR48. She’s the only character PXR has performed so far that has a clear line of growth. Watching the wolf scene and Yezi’s reaction to the villagers in episode 1 compared to how she reacts when she goes back in time in episode 21, there’s a clear difference. Yezi is also another FML role PXR has taken on who has a ML who treats her right. It’s a choice that feels intentional when most audiences remember PXR for Xiao Feng, a character who spent the last three years of her life in an abusive nightmare powered by her husband. It’s just a shame the show editors seemed so determined to ruin the show. I’m still happy about SJFY. I didn’t even think I’d ever get to meet Yezi so I guess even if the meeting is bittersweet, I’m still glad to see her and she can be another beloved character alongside Xiao Feng, Jun Jiu Ling and Li Binghe.

The final showdown actually impressed me. It’s what made me start thinking there’s been at least two editors and there’s a set of original scenes and set of for the review scenes.

I actually cried watching that BTS. It doesn’t make sense that they have all these good scenes but choose not to use them. I’m really starting to have a conspiracy theory that this show was not meant to be cut well on purpose. I know the director is dissatisfied . I also read that one of the producers came out to say something today but their post is now hidden.

1) Bai Lu broke the seal but they cut the scene that actually showed this so it was confusing. She does have powers but they seem to only have to do with astrology. The show glosses over it but it seems that there are different types of powers.
2) It basically means they are a good match.
3) He’s on the path to becoming a regular dude.

No there’s no intention of making it two parts. The cuts have nothing to do with length but with censorship and other mysterious reasons that also have nothing to do with length.

I’m starting to think destroying the quality of this drama was the point.

It’s only 25 episodes. There is no 2nd part.

I think even the Chinese fans are having a hard time trying to figure it out.

They cut 11 episodes. Weibo is scolding the show to death right now and I’ll probably join them once I watch the end.

Conspiracy Theory Time!!!
After watching the tidbits, I’m pretty sure this show had at least two different sets of editors. Why?
1) Almost every single tidbit is emotionally on point and the ones that are polished are often more beautiful than the show.
2) Then there’s the fact that some sequences are absolutely gorgeous and some barely pass the amateur test. The well shot sequences feel like the original bits that were allowed to stay.
3) Whoever cut the final edit seemed determined to destroy both the enemies to lovers storyline of Yu Xiuming and Yezi and the emotional depth of the lovers to enemies storyline of Yezi and Yi Wuyou. To the point that it ruins a lot of the main plot. I can’t see a crew that took such care to shoot such emotional scenes then cutting it up like it’s been done. I feel like there would have been more care to preserve what they could. Especially with PXR and ZZT. The tension between her love/guilt for Yu Xiuming and the slow breakdown of the relationship with Yi Wuyou is crucial to setting up the brutal triangle Youku promised but it’s all gone. I feel like the crews editors would have tried to save it as best as they could. Maybe it is that their performances aren’t strong enough but the cuts are so deep and poorly arranged that both PXR and ZZT are both getting criticised for their acting . This is sad when the BTS shows them both on point. Looking at the BTS of PXR and ZZT at the end gave me real tears but the trailer doesn’t show anything with the same level of depth. I doubt someone who worked with the original feeling of the scene would then cut it so that it half the affect. Even with censorship cuts, why would a crew who spent 4 months shooting come up with the end result of what we’ve received ?

I think it might be their baby or a baby they’ve adopted because I’m pretty sure the shot was taken in Emperor Ming’s room.

Haha. I hope they get to do another variety show together. They’ve got such good energy and you can tell ZZT loves hanging around her. His face is very much little brother who adores their big sister.

The black wedding dress!!! It’s too beautiful!!! Seeing it reminds me of why Fan Bingbing chose PXR as a protege. She’s really too gorgeous!!!
