That was the original explanation and it probably is the most likely but tbh, I’m not so sure anymore if it was heavily censored after seeing some of the dramas that have recently aired so much as it was definitely heavily edited in order to pass the review if that makes sense. This drama is basically only the heavily edited middle part of the drama from what I can gather. That’s why nothing really makes sense. Also, the revenge plot line of the FML has been cut, gutting the soul of the story. As a result, the triangle is barely there. Yezi’s storyline had to be cut and rearranged with redubbing to fit the edits. PXR’s fans have been doing a lot of work to clarify because of passerby opinion PXR didn’t act well in this drama but not only does her dub (she did not dub herself) not match the actions she originally acted but the editors cut seemed to have cut her highlights out as well. Just watch the uncut version of YWY’s ending and it would make most people say “wtf, why didn’t they use that?” Poor Yi Wuyou has been cut out almost entirely. YXM has had cuts too but it seems to be less than the other two and his highlights have been kept. As a sort of apology for the state of the drama, the show was airing cut tidbits on Douyin but then they posted that there were issues broadcasting them. They started posting again fortunately but it has since stopped too. One of the producers was also rumored to have posted a message to the audience that there will be “compensation” once the show finishes broadcasting but the post is now hidden and can’t be verified .
the fact that Yezi had to rely on A'Rui to survive in Yebei tells already how much he did for her as her father.…
Even he admits he’s a poor father so I don’t know why they’re scolding Yezi just because he looked sad when she got married. Like you said, he has clout. Why not send her away to a place where she can flourish? Tbh he probably looked that way because he wanted her to marry YWY. There seemed to be some link between him and YWY from the start of the story.
Hi! Thank you for the amazing in-depth review and insight!!! I didn't realize the drama was cut down so much until…
Hi, It’s no problem. I wanted to write this because the show is getting trashed but a lot of the reasons for its issues are really out of its hands. I didn’t think it was fair for a show and actors that obviously do have quality to be ethered without context. As for what was cut, Yezi originally had a revenge plot. More on it can be found in the character analysis posted in the topic discussions but cutting that plot basically gutted her character, killed most of the Yi Wuyou scenes, and took a good chunk of the show out. They also cut the beginning arc of the show with life in Yebei and Yezi and A’Rui in Tianqi and the cut the last arc which dealt with the main pairings life after marriage. Some of the side characters also had their roles reduced as well. As for why the cuts happened, originally it was thought that they were a result of the author’s scandal. They were banned and usually when that happens, anything associated with their work that isn’t already out gets buried. The show cut ties and said they had a mostly original script so in the beginning it was assumed the author’s part were cut. There were also assumptions that the show’s content went under a much more strict review than usual due to the author. For example couples are supposedly supposed to be harmonious in dramas now so fans assumed her revenge plot was cut because of that. Grey villains are also discouraged so some assumed the scenes where viewers can empathise have been cut. Platforms also cut things and many of the cut kiss scenes are thought to be Youku’s work since they’ve been known to cut kiss scenes. My own theory for why the show doesn’t work as it should is that the later set of editors tried to cut it into a basic hero saves the damsel story but the script which apparently took years to write had too tightly interwoven the three characters for a major cut to be made without it having a huge knock on effect. I also think Yezi/Bai Lu was the focal point and the story weaves around her. She has her own growth arc but both YXM and YWY’s arcs rely on hers to be realised properly. Reducing her character so much essentially killed the soul of the story. We just have to be glad editors were smart enough to keep enough YXM to carry what was left.
I am still here wanting to speak to Youku management lol I hope they release an uncut version lol
Not going to lie, I’m probably gonna die mad at Youku but at least it won’t be alone😂. Apparently there’s a lot of people who can’t get over this show. Every time its Weibo blog posts it gets flooded with “show us the tidbits” comments.
I swear I saw February’23 as the date for its airing schedule but I feel like I dare not hope. I don’t even care if this drama is good or not anymore, I’m really just here for the visuals of Peng Xiao Ran and Han Dongjun.
I think only episode 1 had subtitles as far as I’ve ever seen. This drama was region locked and tribute dramas aren’t very popular so that’s probably why there’s no subs. I had to actually stream from Chinese stations to follow it in real-time. I only watched it for PXR so just the first part but it’s really good. This director is very good at shooting and the acting is really good. PXR and CRX also look really good together too and have good chemistry. I could have easily watched double the amount of episodes of them.
I think one of the most interesting aspects of this drama is how it challenges the status quo of “romantic relationships are king” with having the initial driving relationship being a platonic, non-familial one. There’s recently been quite a bit of internet discussion on platonic relationships and how they’re not viewed as equally important in storytelling and how there’s writers/audiences that want to change that. I also think it’s interesting that the plot has Yezi cut ties with her dad despite trying to show him as a somewhat complicated character who loves her on some level. It’s gotten Yezi scolded by viewers but I think it sends a very nuanced, yet surprising message about abusive relationships and not having to accept them. This tied into the show’s strong sense of found family amongst the characters Yezi surrounds herself feels low-key progressive.
I’m up to ep five, and I’m finding this a lot like Jun Jiu Ling in that the story, once it gets going, is…
If I remember right, the JJL cuts were the platform’s decision not really censorship although they lost a lot of episodes too. I say this because basically halfway through or towards the end of its airing, Youku uploaded a better version with “better” filters, smoother edits, and some missing scenes replaced. It feels like they wouldn’t have been able to do that so fast if they needed it to be reviewed by censors.
A link to a recent translated interview by PXR: https://youtu.be/BLgNNDmvBXY The YouTuber said they would translate her interviews in the future which is awesome! She’s so thoughtful, well spoken, and often says some really inspirational things.
Everyone has their own hamlet. It’s good you found a drama you like. Just enjoy it then and leave those who…
But what does that drama have to do with the SJFY page other than you like it and found the flow and editing better? The premise isn’t even the same. Recommendations are fine but coming to a drama’s page with “hey this other drama is better” is a strange approach to one. Also, SJFY only has one truly famous main actor and that’s FSF. PXR and ZZT are not as well known domestically.

You have every right to your view. There’s nothing to apologise for there. It just doesn’t make sense to come to a drama page and say “hey, this other drama is much better” especially when editing isn’t controlled by the actors.
Nah, it’s not like Goodbye My Princess at all. It has some sad moments but it’s not as dark as GMP and the…
The editing really gutted it so it’s best to just focus on the relationship of the main couple if you like their chemistry. Also the costumes. Everything else is too damaged by the editing.
Love the ML-FL dynamic, but the weak point is the cut and that didn't flow well. 7/10. Generously. I do love that…
I feel like I’m going to die with regrets because of this drama lol.I really don’t understand why the last arc wasn’t shown. It doesn’t seem like it would have needed any cuts since it’s just life after marriage. Sigh, I too would like to see them team up in another drama, preferably a serious costume drama rather than an idol like this but it feels like a pipe dream due to all the hate they got.
The trailer gives me "Goodbye, My Princess" vibes and so, I'm not going to watch this. I dislike tragic.
Nah, it’s not like Goodbye My Princess at all. It has some sad moments but it’s not as dark as GMP and the ML doesn’t treat the FML like garbage like in GMP. It’s slow burn but this show’s ML is pretty doting considering the trope.
well I know that their actual age gap is not that huge but still, it looks huge in appearance. It might put some…
Yeah, casting is often out of the hands of most actors and sometimes they don’t know their partner until the contract is signed but the Weibo scene is just toxic and strange and they blame actors for all types of stuff. She’s been told to quit acting with ugly guys, quit doing fantasy dramas, her careers over, all types of ugly stuff over this show’s casting. The male lead has been getting tons of hate too but he’s established whereas she’s still I think a C level actress from what I remember so public opinion has more of an effect on her career.
but the emperor said those bricks are fill with gold, the gold was stolen or the gold means food ??
Gold more than likely means food. One of the biggest problems in warfare is logistics so having a large and ever ready cache of food is a “goldmine”. It probably got cut or explained too fast for the audience to catch but I’m guessing they used it to feed the troops defending the sanctuary otherwise why highlight it?
wow, it is so heartbreaking that youku does not care about this show. but at least fans do!
Tbh, it’s not a bad thing for fans to be so invested. If it’s deep and long lasting enough it could become a cult classic even despite the quality. GMP was pretty much solely powered by fans until recently.
